Erythrée, le pays aux deux
visages.
Asmara et Massawa, reliés par une des routes les plus spectaculaires
d'Afrique, sont les deux visages du même pays. Là où les chrétiens et les
musulmans habitent ensemble, dans la paix et l'harmonie.
« Vous devez voir Asmara du ciel » m'a indiqué le père Abraha. Il a raison.
Du haut du clocher de la cathédrale, vous pouvez voir l'église copte, la
mosquée, la synagogue. Et la place Bahti Meskerem où chaque 27
septembre des milliers de croyants se réunissent pour célébrer le « Meskel
», ou la « découverte de la vraie croix », une célébration très importante
pour l'église orthodoxe Erythréenne.
Du clocher vous pouvez également voir l'extrémité orientale de la ville, où
les collines s'inclinent vers la mer rouge. Une fabuleuse route de 2000
mètres de dénivelé qui déploie ses lacets sur 120 kilomètres. Elle arrive
dans la très ancienne Massawa, la « perle de la mer rouge », un port
musulman, au style à la fois Ottoman et Arabe, avec son labyrinthe de
ruelles étroites. Aujourd'hui Massawa garde tout son charme même si le
temps a laissé son empreinte et si beaucoup de bâtiments ont besoin d'être
restaurés...
