get to market quickly. Take the time to
think outside of the box. Things such as
Groupon and Facebook will continue to
be large influencers in how people buy
things in the near term. Think about
all of your marketing from the consumer’s point of view. Even the slightest adjustments in keywords, images
used or geo-location could dramatically
increase sales.

Street performance is moving away from

downturn has shaken out the casual
enthusiast and left the industry with the
hardcore performance buyer. This phenomenon is evident in all segments. The
market for performance exhaust systems
has changed dramatically. Where mufflers
and straight pipes once topped the modifications list, enthusiasts are having to compromise and adhere to tougher emissions
and exhaust-noise legislation. Retailers
should become very focused. Sales have
increased dramatically for those businesses
that have developed reputations for expert
service or knowledge in a given platform or brand. Niche businesses succeed
because of this, and so I stress education
and movement toward proficiencies in
electronics and forced induction. I would
recommend that retailers guard against
being “all things to all people.”

People want a little

the need for more
information. The biggest hurdle is
getting proper data and information
from manufacturers for customers to
make an educated decision on what
to purchase and why. I would say that
98% of the industry is not organized.
We get a lot of customers who are
weekend racers, who want to go the
dragstrip one weekend and a road
course the next weekend with their
daily cars.
Retailers should find a niche market that they know about and enjoy
helping with and getting involved in.
But always buy quality parts that you
know the manufacturer will support.
Stay away from the knock-off stuff, as a
lot of those manufactures won’t support
the product or be able to help with tech.
Retailers will have good sales based on
their knowledge of their markets. You
just need to find your niche and stick
with it. There are tons of untapped markets out there. Finding one is the best
way to make your company stand out.

to repair and modify
our own cars. A lot of
people now simply buy
performance. We used
to start with a stock
Chevrolet or Ford
block and outfit it with aftermarket parts,
but we just got an engine into my shop
that doesn’t have a single OEM part in it.
We call it a Chevrolet because it’s based on
that design, but there aren’t any Chevrolet
parts in it. The aftermarket is able to figure
out how the factory parts can be improved
and then builds in more efficiency. The
factory continually makes refinements,
too, but the factory can’t do it as quickly
as the aftermarket. There are also a lot of
aftermarket parts now that are designed to
work with other aftermarket parts without
any modifications—for instance, a set of
Dart cylinder heads that are designed to
work with a specific Jesel rocker system.
If you called Jesel to order a set of rocker
arms and told them what cylinder head
you were using, they could send you parts
that were designed for that head. Retailers
need to look at those combinations and
be educated in what they’re selling.

bottom. To expand their selection, retailers should focus on building a strong
relationship with a warehouse distributor (WD) that will give them access to
lines that they don’t buy direct. The few
points given up on margin will be more
than made up in a more efficient and
profitable operation. When it works as
intended, utilizing a WD as the conduit
between a manufacturer and retailer is a
thing of beauty.

hobby for the older generation to look
down on and ignore younger hobbyists.
We need to embrace them. Encourage
them. Get them involved. As the average age of our older customers increases,
they will die off and not be replaced by
younger enthusiasts.

“rat rod” market has

late-model Camaro, Mustang and Challenger enthusiasts, there is also this retrorod movement that is looking to build cars
and recreate the lifestyle of the ’50s and
’60s. We went through a generation of
people who would take their vehicles to a
shop if they wanted a turbo or an exhaust
fitted. These new people, who are in their
late teens to early 30s, are more like the
earlier generation, where we worked on the
cars ourselves. There are now even a couple
of magazines dedicated to the movement,
including Hot Rod Deluxe and Car Kulture
Deluxe. We have also seen very positive
growth in the nostalgia racing market
and the late-model circle track racing
market. A more troubling development
is the ever-decreasing market share for the
three-step distribution process. It’s a very
real challenge for the entire industry, and so
is the continued pressure of overseas manufacturing and importation of parts on local
jobs and our industry’s economic sector.

EFI and modify the engine and program
together. The LS family is also used with
factory EFI, yet there are many applications where a carburetor is used! Bolt-on
products are required due to the influx of
late-model performance. Items that can
be added without modifying any wiring
or other parts of the car are welcomed
by enthusiasts who either don’t want to
modify their cars too much or are in the
do-it-for-me group. Technology and computers are being accepted more and more
by racers. That said, retailers need to be
up-to-speed on products that require PC
programming or a handheld controller.

The economy has
changed how businesses
operate. I find more
businesses are doing
more with less and have
measured the results
of their spending and
return on investment. If the numbers don’t
make sense, a project is no longer supported
by the company. Many companies are
also approaching sales with a whole new
level of service and relationship building.
Retailers should embrace the changes in
the industry but guard against assuming
the customer is only interested in price. I
believe the consumer will have information
overload at a certain point. That is when a
competent salesperson can really shine and
make the sale. The accuracy of a manufacturer’s data will continue to be an issue for
the manufacturer and each part of the selling
channel. Without accurate data, a new salesman (even using a computer database) will
not be able to keep up with the changes in
our industry. Traditional mediums of print
magazines and catalogs are only one way
to reach the consumer. Recognizing that a
larger number of consumers only search for
parts in an electronic fashion should illustrate how important accurate manufacturer
data has become.
