NEWSLETTER Vol. 31 No. 262
May - July 2014
What is our Mission?
We believe our primary purpose in this life is
to exemplify the life of Christ in fulfilling the
Great Commission – by preaching the Gospel,
discipling the saved, and showing compassion
unto the least of these… (Matthew 5:16,
Matthew 28:19-20, Matthew 25: 31-46)
Gospel Express ministry personnel are committed to work together in love with all born again
Christians to accomplish this great task before the
return of Jesus Christ, whose Kingdom shall have
no end.

Compassion
Jesus...the heartbeat of our mission
Belize, Central America
A Little Dot On the Globe but Many Precious Souls
… souls whom God has created in His
image. We have seen little sparks in
hearts that were dark and cold turn into
little flames of a new life in spirit and
soul. This was especially evident through
the Bondage to Freedom seminar at Remar Rehab center in Bullet Tree where
four people received Christ. I was also
privileged to teach the Bondage to Freedom seminar at Spanish Lookout, the
community where I was born and raised.
Our family had the opportunity to
conduct a banquet for 20 some widows
and widowers at “My Refuge Christian
Ministries” in Roaring Creek. It was such
a blessing to see them worship throughout the program and at the closing sing
“Because He Lives” for us.
Singing “Because He Lives”
After Brother Nelson and John Schmidt
arrived, we embarked on our touring
schedule, starting with Hattieville prison
and five communities. This included San
Felipe, Blue Creek, Shipyard, Spanish
Lookout, and Cayo - a real variety of
cultures. Nelson was preaching through
interpreters (Spanish
and German). John
Schmidt communicated well, being able
to include Spanish
songs at the prison
and San Felipe.
A special thank you to: Kenneth Dueck
and Alvin Braun for providing their
sound system, their time, travel, and set
up for all the services. We also really appreciate all the provisions of food, lodging, vehicles, and generous love gifts to
help with all the mission expenses. Most
of all we thank God for His faithfulness and the opportunity of being fellow
laborers in Kingdom-building ministry.
~Jake Penner

“My dad left my mom and me when I was
4 years old; haven’t seen him since… He
doesn’t care nothing about me…”
“I am very angry because my father left
when I was like 2 years old and I don’t even
know who he is!”
These were just a few of many heartbreaking testimonies during the Bondage
to Freedom seminar at Hattieville prison.
I looked into empty eyes, filled with the
pain of rejection, shattered dreams and
hopelessness. Many chose to forgive and
release the shackles of bitterness, hatred,
and anger as they began to understand
that we are God’s idea and His creation… marred by sin but redeemed
through the cross and the shed blood
of Jesus Christ! I shared the good news,
“Jesus Loves You!!” The certificate each
one received for completing the seminar
gave them a huge sense of achievement
and self worth.
Over 200
attended the
concert following the
seminar. So
many stood to
Giving certificates
receive Christ
that I questioned/reiterated if they understood the seriousness of giving their
very life to Jesus Christ.
I really sensed a sincere hunger for God
in all the communities we ministered in.
The privilege to preach at a Kleine Gemeinde (denomination name means small
church) church Sunday morning was an
honor and a special worship experience
with fellow believers.
John Schmidt and I were so blessed
to spend one night with Miss Nancy,
my aunt, who has been a missionary in
Belize for 47 years! Also, spending one
week traveling and ministering with John
Schmidt and the Penner family was such
a blessing. May the Lord give increase to
the watering, planting, and sowing done
in His precious Name.
~Nelson Coblentz
TESTIMONIAL
It has been a blessing to see how God
has worked through Gospel Express in
different parts of Belize. I thank God
for men and women who are willing to
leave the comforts of home in serving
the Lord. What a joy it has been to see
souls being saved and rededications being made. I have been encouraged and
inspired to let God’s love flow through
me in my everyday life.

Welcome to … A NEW BEGINNING
The Sean Bontrager Family
It’s indeed a blessing to welcome A New Beginning ministry
team to Gospel Express. Sean and Lori Bontrager have seven
children, ages 7-17. As Sean would say, “Looked like an all-girls
family, but then came 3 boys!”
Before moving to the Carolinas, the Bontrager’s lived in Sarasota, FL, for 11 years, running a dairy farm with miniature jersey
cows (Lori’s dream/hobby) and Sean also worked
some in construction, laying tile.
The Bontragers have a beautiful blend of family
harmony and share powerful testimonials of
God’s redeeming grace. God has gifted Sean
with song-writing ministry; including 8 songs on their first
CD (you can order on the enclosed response card). Song selection is
underway for another recording, with a planned summer release.
Please pray for Sean’s as their family of 9 travels in an 8x40 ft.
character-building incubator called a motor home! Tours are
being planned that include GA, AL, MS, TN, KY, OH, IA, KS,
NE, CO, and WY, May – September.
(L to R) Sean, Lori, Haley(14), Brody(7), Erin(13), Jake(10),
Kacie(15), Tayler(17),and Dakota(11)
It may also interest you to know that Sean and Duane
Mullett are first cousins. Duane’s father and Sean’s mother
are brother and sister.
Revive us again; fill each heart with Thy Love.. .

The Definition of Revival is: “To make
fresh and strong again.” Reflecting on
my personal life - is my heart fresh, passionate, strong, as it relates to the things
of God? If not, it needs to be that way
again, which is what revival is.
The past several weeks took us to the
City of Charlottesville, VA, and then on
to Plain City, OH, for a series of revival
meetings. I was reminded that while the

Psalms 44: 3-8 says in part, “For they
did not gain possession of the land by
their own sword, nor did their own
arm save them; but it was Your right
hand, Your arm…You are my King, O
God…” The week of revivals with the
Dave Miller family started out with this
word. It’s so heavenly to see the difference in any situation when we see
and acknowledge that even a glimpse
of freedom, peace, or victory comes
only through Him, Jesus Christ. As
our church received from heaven, it
was then literally passed on to family members and brothers and sisters
in Christ as blessings and honor. My
prayer is that as we continue to receive
these blessings, that we would never
forget that what we receive was never
meant just for us, but was meant to
flow through us and impact many other
souls.

geographical locations and surroundings change greatly from one place to
the next, the message of the Gospel, the
inspired word of God, doesn’t change.
It’s always fresh and powerful, and it
never loses its effect. We owe it all to the
one who brought us from darkness to
light…JESUS CHRIST, the Saviour of
the world! May He through the power
of the Holy Spirit revive our hearts and
keep us fresh, passionate, and strong for
the things of God! Because of Jesus,
~ Dave Miller
We came each evening with such anticipation because of their (Miller family)
multi-faceted ministries… from soothing stringed music and heart-provoking
family drama, to very Spirit-filled, unapologetic, convicting preaching. This
was a week of personal soul searching
and finding God touching every fabric
of my life. I had prayed so long for this
week and now am humored at how God
overwhelmed my expectations.

“For we are laborers together with God,”
1 Corinthians 3:9. God has a purpose and
plan for each one of us to be “laborers”
with Him. We certainly did not expect
a snow/ice storm the week of the prison
crusade, but God had other plans. We
were grateful for the opportunity of experiencing additional ministry time and fellowship with other volunteers during the
storm. Only eternity will reveal the full
impact of the week, whether it was with
hotel staff, at the prison, or with someone
in our group. We also thank God for the
contacts and conversations we had in the
prisons, even though it was limited to only
two days. Yes, in spite of our plans being
changed dramatically, we believe God’s
purpose was fulfilled. The crusade team
this year consisted of 417 volunteers, including 23 ministry teams and 23 evangelists. Our mission field consisted of 23
Institutions and we had ten instructors
to conduct the 20 follow-up Bondage to
Freedom Seminars. ~Mervin Wengerd

I am writing to say thank you to your
ministry group for your annual visit to
the inmates here at Lieber Correctional Institution. I know your ministry
through music has inspired and uplifted
the inmates here at Lieber. We do look
forward to your return in 2015.
~Warden, Joseph McFadden
As senior Chaplain of Allendale Correctional Institution, I am writing on
behalf of the inmate population, thanking you for the time you shared with
the men in the dorms and throughout
the worship services. I am very sorry
you had only one night of service, due
to inclement weather. However, we are
looking forward to worshiping with you
in the near future. Thank you again for
all you do. ~Chaplain Cleveland Stokes
Thank you for making our “snowed in”
status a time of blessing, God moved

“For it’s by His grace I’ve been set
free.” I would like to express my appreciation to all of the staff at Gospel
Express for making this prison crusade
possible. The weather may not have
been exactly what we were expecting,
but the God we serve does not need
4 days to accomplish his will. I was
encouraged, as I saw God move the
hearts of men as the gospel was presented by Brother Joe Hostetler in our
2 evening services. What a privilege
to be a part of the kingdom work as
we prayed with and shared with these
dear men. Another Captive Free ~John (Volunteer)
“Jesus, please be with the ladies with
chains on”… These are the words of
the prayer of our 3-year-old after ministering on Death Row. We could hear
the heavy chains clanking on the floor
and the shuffling of feet as the four
women were escorted from Death Row
to the visitation room. The rest of the
prison population was on “lock down”
during their movement. As the women
tried to figure out where they were
going and what this was all about, they
were asked to sit down on the front
row seats. One of the ladies looked at
us and exclaimed, “ You are the family that my daughter told me about! She

This was the first time that our family, including our 3 and 5-year-olds, was given
the privilege to share in this way. When
our little girls came up to sing, each of
the women were crying, and I noticed

around to look at me. I assured them that
everything was alright, and I asked them

be forgiven and united as brothers and

been deeply hurt and wounded by others,
and, although we don’t justify their sinful
actions, we know that “hurt people hurt

Duane clearly shared the plan of salvation and spoke on the strongholds of
fear, bitterness, and anger. We were fairly
confident one of the ladies had received
salvation, but there were two of them
who seemed a bit more reserved and
resistant to us. However, at the conclusion of our time together, both of these
women wanted to pray to ask Jesus
into their hearts and to begin walking
the journey towards healing with Him.
Praise the Lord!

Life Changing Testimonies
As you can see by the testimonies on this page, the Bible study courses are an important part in doing the work of God’s Kingdom.
The Bible says that “God’s Word will not come back void,” Isaiah 55:11. Spoken or written, the Word will accomplish its purpose.
Thanks to all for your prayers and support for this part of the ministry. ~Merlin Troyer, Discipleship Materials Director
TESTIMONIES
I spent the last 7 years following the
religion of Islam. In April 2013, I was
arrested for a serious crime. I was so
mad at God for never being there for
me. One day I was put in isolation (the
hole) for fighting. The chaplain stopped
by… I took the time to tell him all that
I was going through. He said: “Well Mr.
Nixon, it sounds to me like someone
is trying to get your attention.” One
day he sent me your Touch of His Hand
Bible course and a note, “I’m asking
you as a friend, please do the study
course.” I learned a lot I didn’t know,
but I still had questions. After I finished
it, he gave me the Romans Bible study
course and it changed my life forever.
Romans really taught me how to live,
to love and to receive it. I no longer
live by the law, but I live by faith. Now
I understand that God has always been
there for me. To top it off, I got the
Student Bible Dictionary; this
is the greatest award I ever
got in my life. I told my mom
I didn’t want to be Muslim no
more. My mother told me,
“Son, when you come home,
we can go to church together,
because I need to start making changes in my life too.”
My Muslim friends weren’t my
friends anymore. Because of Romans, I
have learned that when you become a
child of God, the world and those who
are of the world will start to hate you. I
have new friends in Christ now, and they
are helping me every step of the way. ~T. Nixon (PA inmate) “I was in prison
and you came to visit me.”
Your Bible studies kept me
alive in the Lord and sane in
the flesh. A tragedy occurred
in my family’s life, and I was
incarcerated for 8 months.
I thought I would die in
prison, but in fact, I met
my precious Lord there in a
powerful way. Today, three
years later, I am a Bible college graduate and a certified counselor/
post abortion counselor. Thank you for
the wonderful work you do for “the
least of them.”
