and to participate in joint student/faculty
projects.
studyabroad.cmich.edu
The exchange program is designed for Engineering and Technology students, but any other
students with an interest in Mexico
who have at least sophomore
standing and a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA are encouraged to
apply. You do not need to know
any Spanish to participate.
During the exchange, visiting students will
participate in classroom and laboratory
activities, visit local spots of historical
and cultural interest, and tour selected
industrial businesses. Three academic
credits can be earned by participating in
this exchange. This will require, in part,
participating in pre-trip meetings and
keeping a journal of daily activities.
Accommodations
Students are housed as guests of local
families who have a son or daughter with a
similar academic background. You will be
included in all of the usual family activities
such as: local day celebrations, birthdays,
welcoming and farewell banquets, times of
relaxation. You will leave the country with a
rich experience of Mexican day-to-day life
and hospitality.
Cost
The program cost is $575 plus tuition (3
credits), airfare (approx. $800), passport
($97), some meals in transit, and spending
money.
Location
Toluca is the automobile center of
Mexico, located approximately a one
hour southwest of Mexico City by car.
Within a couple hours drive of Toluca is
the town of Taxco (Tasco) where you will
find the Cacahuamilpa Caves and silver
mines. Another short drive takes you to
Michoacan, a state in Mexico known for
its copper and timber industries.
Nearby, is the town of Ocampo, which
is the winter home of the Monarch
butterflies. It is an awesome site as you
make the climb up the mountainside
where the Monarchs spend the winter
hibernating.
The ITESM campus is located on the
northern edge of Toluca. ITESM has four
main buildings on campus, and is in the
process of expanding to accommodate
more students in wider fields of study. By
standing on the second floor of the stadium, you can look south over Toluca and
see the snow covered volcano that looms
over the south side of the town.
Field Trips
Your visit to Toluca will include a day
trip to Mexico City, the largest city in the
world (20 million people). Prepare for
Mexican culture at its best. You will have
the opportunity to visit an anthropology
museum, a centuries old Catholic
cathedral, the presidential palace and, of
course, the Toetihuacan Pyramids. You
will be able to enjoy Mexican culture and
history everywhere you look. There are
many shops to browse through as well
as all sorts of street vendors selling their
wares.
Orientation
All program participants are required
to participate in several pre-departure
orientation sessions organized by the
Department of Industrial and Engineering
Technology. These sessions will be
held during early spring semester to
disseminate information and build group
identity. There is also an online orientation
offered by the study abroad office.
Application and Information
Students who meet eligibility requirements
and wish to enroll in this program should
contact Dr. Lopez to express interest.
Dr. Lopez will notified the OIA/SA and
students will be given access to the online
study abroad application form.

to the cost of the program. It is also
possible to apply for additional aid based
on the program's cost (including airfare).
