Lempäälä is
a rapidly growing, creative municipality that promotes entrepreneurship and develops its centre.
Located in the Tampere city region, it enjoys quick and smooth
transport connections and has more than 22,000 residents.
Lempäälä is, in accordance with its mission statement, “an
independent municipality offering comfortable living and good
services – a place where the countryside meets the city.” A distinctive feature of this municipality established in 1866
is its centre, which is located on an island. With a
landscape enlivened by lakes, rapids and a channel,
Lempäälä offers an attractive environment for
tourists and summer residents.

Take a holiday
in Lempäälä!
According to the visitor numbers, Ideapark is the
first stop for visitors in Lempäälä. And that's no
wonder! The commercial city offers excellent possibilities for shopping and its diverse events, cafés
and restaurants cater for the needs of the whole
family. There are plenty of attractions for children
– the Cultural Centre PiiPoo was joined by Funpark,
an indoor amusement park in Ideapark.
The best way to experience the history of Lempäälä is to visit the Kuokkala Museum Road, Villa
Hakkari, surrounded by a green park, and the lush
nature on the banks of the rapids at Kuokkalankoski. The Kuokkala area offers, for example, events,
an open-air theatre, an arboretum, visitor attractions and culinary joys.
Lempäälä can be reached by boat from Tampere
and Hämeenlinna. The idyllic Vaihmalan Hovi offers accommodation in a manor house setting. It
is located on the shore of Vanajavesi, next to a golf
course and horse riding stables. It is easy to hop on
a Finnish Silverline boat from the quay at Vaihmala.
All the services of the Tampere region are close to
Lempäälä. You can complement your holiday agenda
by visiting Särkänniemi Adventure Park or the Spa
Hotel Rantasipi Eden.
Pick the best of what’s on offer to enjoy a perfect
holiday in Lempäälä. Please read through this brochure and don't forget the services offered by the
tourist information office.
Welcome to Lempäälä!

The main attraction in the centre of Lempäälä
is the 500 year old medieval St. Birgit Memorial
Church. The Birgitta Trail, the biggest nature
tourism attraction in Lempäälä, has been named after the same saint. Ever since its opening year 1997,
the route has inspired people to explore nature
either by taking a short stroll or a long hike.

is located in the Marjamäki area of Lempäälä. There are more than 150 shops,
restaurants and cafés, and plenty of events to ensure that Ideapark is the
most popular tourist destination in Lempäälä. For more information, please
read this brochure or visit the website www.ideapark.fi.
The trade museum gives you an insight into the typical selection of items for
sale in a village shop between 1930-1950. In the Hair Salon Museum you can
find out how young women curled their hair in the 1930s. Take a look at the
blacksmith's workshop – you can hear from a long distance if iron is being
hammered on the anvil.
Right next door to the Museum Road there is the Villa Hakkari restaurant
and the beautiful arboretum. In the manor park you can enjoy open-air theatre shows during the summertime.
The nearby rapids at Kuokkalankoski are a popular fishing destination.
Team Koskikellujat organises activities throughout the year. Why not try the
exciting and enjoyable float in the rapids in a drysuit?

located in the centre of Lempäälä, and it was built between 1867-1874. Finland's first contemporary timber rafting and regulatory canal was renovated
to its current form around 50 years ago. The canal that connects Pyhäjärvi
and Vanajavesi is 1,275 metres long and its locks are used up to 3,000 times a
year. The canal is operated on the principle of self-service. Besides Silverline's
boats, there are numerous leisure boats sailing in the popular inland water
route.
unique medieval church was built in grey stone at the beginning of the 16th
century. The church was named after its patron saint, Saint Birgit. The only
female saint in the Nordic countries, the Swedish Birgit, daughter of Birger,
lived in the 14th century. The church has been modified and expanded, for
example during the 1830s, when its base was expanded to the current crucifix form and the beautiful four-leaf clover windows were installed. The bell
tower standing next to the church has served as a museum of ecclesiastical
objects. The church is open on weekdays from 10 am to 4 pm starting from
the second week of June until the end of July.

The most famous nature attraction in the municipality of Lempäälä is the Birgitta Trail, a circular
trekking route amongst the beautiful lake and
forest landscapes. The trail consists of 50 km of
marked trekking routes. The Birgitta Trail was
named the best trekking route in Finland in 2006.
The route offers a variety of rocky and smooth paths, thick
forest and clear-cut areas, as well as grassy areas and jogging
paths. Hundreds of metres of duckboards and dozens of footbridges facilitate trekking in the marshy sections of the trail.
There are plenty of opportunities for taking a break and
making a campfire along the path. The trekking route has a
Lempäälä
good network of signposts and also several information boards
and sites for overnight camping. There are a few lean-tos,
dugouts and a hut along the route. Every now and then, the
ever-changing forest landscapes shift to breathtaking views of
the lakes.
You can choose the starting point and the length of the route
yourself. The trail is partly located close to populated areas,
so whether you come to the area by bus, train or car, it is easy
to go trekking. With the help of a map you can find the route
that best suits your abilities; there are easy, medium and hard
routes. The Birgitta trail is popular among the scouts as many
sections of the route are child-friendly. The Birgitta Trail offers
enough challenge even for experienced hikers. Get ready to go
trekking and let nature empower you!

Vaihmalan Hovi’s buildings date from the
early 20th century. Each hotel room has a
distinctive decoration theme. The corridors,

due respect to tradition, and the atmosphere
is enriched by unique murals and paintings.
Vaihmalan Hovi’s buildings are surrounded
by a large garden with apple trees and berry
bushes, and the terrace has beautiful vistas
of sunsets over the waters of Vanajavesi, rural
scenes and the greens of Hiisi-Golf and Farmigolf. By the water, there is a beach volley court,
a sauna with a whirlpool bath, a guest harbour
and a beach for swimming. Our Day Spa offers

Birgitta Weeks
– togetherness and great experiences for all senses.
Can you hear the music – flute, hurdy-gurdy and cittern? A horse
neighs amidst happy chatter. This is how people gathered at
the market hundreds of year ago, in the Middle Ages. Common
people and clergymen, merchants and travellers all got together,
travelling long distances by horse and along waterways. This year,
we can once again travel in time to the Middle Ages at the Birgitta
Weeks events.

Walk and illuminate
On the last Saturday of August, the Birgitta church walk will kick off the Birgitta Weeks, which were first organised
in 2003. The church walk is organised
annually, the other events every second
year (odd years). The two-kilometre
route ends at the shore in Myllyranta,
near the church.
On the shore, participants will light
Birgitta fires to provide atmospheric
lighting in the darkening evening.
A seminar on the Middle Ages
In Finland, the Middle Ages lasted from
the 12th or 13th century to the 16th
century. You can familiarise yourself
with the era by attending the Birgitta
Weeks Seminar on the Middle Ages at
Pirkan Opisto on 19 September.
The main event: a cheerful market
The Birgitta Market will take place in
the centre of Lempäälä, in and around
Kirkkotori Square, on 3 October 2015 at
10 am–2 pm. A procession in medieval
costumes will walk to the market from
the nearby Kanttorinpuisto Park, and
you can also join this colourful bunch.
The Birgitta Market will feature a wide
variety of sales booths and, naturally,
Lempäälä
programme as well. There will be
jugglers, and the atmosphere will be
complemented by the Härkätien Leikarit
orchestra, playing medieval market music with its fine instruments. More than
a thousand visitors are again expected to
enjoy the market and other events of the
Birgitta Weeks.
Concerts – listen and be enchanted
On 27 September, Lumous Ensemble
will be charming Manttaalitalo with the
“Kaipaus ja kohtalo” (Longing and fate)
concert, also featuring Anna-Maaria
Oramo and Sanna Majanlahti. The series
of events will conclude with a concert in
the St Birgit Memorial Church on Sunday
4 October: Celebrating light, the Bach
concert “Pyhiinvaellus” (Pilgrimage).
The soloist will be Markku LuolajanMikkola, baroque cello.
Come and experience
the Birgitta Weeks!
The Birgitta Weeks are organised by the
Cultural Services of the Municipality
of Lempäälä, Lempäälä Parish, Pirkan
Opisto and Taitokeskus Lempäälä. You

a rapidly growing, creative municipality that promotes entrepreneurship and develops its centre.
