Celebrating Lacoste’s
history, the Spring/Summer
2016 Collection re-ignites
the fundamental passion that
inspired the iconic piqué polo
shirt more than 80 years ago.
It was founder René Lacoste who was
first inspired to design a product that
complemented both his performance
on court and the effortless style he
was widely known for.
From his work with fabric specialist
André Gillier, the now iconic piqué
polo shirt was born, reflecting values
developed from his sporting design
and innovation. These values drive
the Lacoste brand to this day,
from the court inspired Clear Lines
and Net, through to the aesthetically
driven Monochrome, Punch and
Piqué detailing.

Inherently determined and focused,
Lacoste’s articulate approach to the
game achieved the ultimate success,
but it was his innovative qualities that
brought about major changes to both
style and play.
Recognised for his effortless elegance
as a player and stylish persona decked
in monochrome shades of sophisticated
white, René started to turn his attention
to ways in which he could enhance his
performance.
His attention to detail and perfection
played out in the creation of the iconic
piqué polo shirt which introduced the
brand’s new breathable fabric.

During the 1920s the clothing
worn by professional tennis
players was a world away from
what we see today.
One of the most visible differences was
that men wore long-sleeved white collared
shirts with their sleeves rolled to aid
movement. It was this element of the
game that inspired a young René Lacoste
to first showcase his innovative spirit
by designing a new product that would
make playing the game easier and
more comfortable.
Famously working with specialist
André Gillier, Lacoste designed a fabric
that would not only enhance and improve
on-court performance, but one that
still fitted the aesthetic of the clean,
sophisticated appearance of the players.
In true Lacoste style, his first move was to
drastically take the sleeves to the elbow
to allow for ease of movement, but it was
the fabric itself, which became as iconic as
the more visible aspects; that fabric was
to become universally known as 'piqué'.
SS16
since 1933 this is Lacoste
Both Lacoste and Gillier decided on the
piqué fabric because it ticked two very
major necessities for them. First, it was a
fabric that allowed for extra breathability
and movement when playing and second,
it remained looking smart, presentable
and ultimately stylish throughout play
and afterwards too. This product was
to become the iconic L.12.12 Piqué Polo
Shirt, still so relevant and favoured today
and one of the most recognisable and
important symbols for Lacoste.

Lacoste remains an important

style and understated elegance
of René that breathed life
into this brand code. Direct
in approach and with a sense
of ease, monochrome is
motivated by the ultimate in
sporting performance.
Equally subtle in styling,
René championed monochrome
and its various forms. To him
monochrome captured the clean,
classic tone of tennis.

Interest in developing
new ways to improve his
tennis performance led René
Lacoste to become a master
of developing subtle changes
that had a large effect on
the way he played.
Forever robust and focused, René
had a very direct approach to his
play. It was a no thrills method that
earned him the nickname of
‘The Crocodile’ due to his aggression
and focused determination.
In complete contrast, René was
widely known for his effortless style.
Yet underneath the wistfulness
was an obsession with detail and
perfection and this was to drive him
to one of his very first innovations.
In developing the now iconic piqué
polo shirt, René was also behind
the introduction of the punched
grip handle of the tennis racket.
This was to enhance his accuracy
as well as adding padded comfort
while competing.
This punch detailing has since
become synonymous with the
Lacoste brand, a very subtle styling
quirk that features on Lacoste
footwear, referencing it's sporting
heritage and artisanship.
