The Berol by Paper Mate® Team
Star Pupil Berol by Paper Mate® Teachers’ Favourite
A recent survey has proved that Berol by Paper Mate® is
the brand that teachers are most likely to recommend to a
colleague or friend.
An independent study carried out amongst 402 teachers
showed Berol as the most popular choice for teachers. In
popularity, quality, loyalty and likeability, Berol was the number
one choice in all options. Two product categories; Handwriting
Instruments and Colouring Felt Pens were particularly popular.
The Berol Handwriting Pen is the number one back to
school pen and teachers indicated they were most likely to
recommend the popular pen. The Handwriting Pen is specially
designed for children who are learning to write, the nib
has slight resistance to paper allowing more controlled letter
formation.
As part of the study teachers were asked which Colouring Felt
Pen brand they were most likely to recommend and again,
Berol came out top. Super long writing length and long cap off
life make them ideal for the classroom environment. The Berol
Colour Fine and Colour Broad Pens are excellent for creative
activities, colouring and drawing in a range of bold colours.
....performance to be proud of.

Why Are Witches Green?
Because of Hollywood! The 1939 film The Wizard of Oz was the first to use the green skin tone
for the Wicked Witch of the West and it has been used ever since.
The witch that we commonly associate with Halloween dates from the late 15th century when
the world was rife with accusations of witchcraft. During this period of mass paranoia it was not
only women that were put on trial for witchery but men and even children. Back then, most
people believed in magic and were suspicious of any connection with the devil.
There were extreme and somewhat ludicrous measures to determine if someone was a witch or
not. One unusual test was the sink test. This involved tying rocks to the accused and placing them
in water. If they sank, they were proclaimed innocent. If they floated, they were pronounced a
witch, and were then hanged. Unfortunately with this test, even if you were innocent you still
drowned and never had a chance to live as an innocent person.
Halloween began as a pagan belief that on one night of the year the souls of the dead return to
their original homes, to be entertained with food. If food and shelter were not provided, these
evil spirits would cast spells and cause havoc toward those failing to fulfil their requests. This
is why we now associate Halloween with other worldly creatures that roam the streets on All
Hallows Eve and why trick or treat plays such an important part in the celebrations.
Spooky Halloween Silhouettes (suitable for key stage 2)
Task:
Halloween is a time associated with
autumn and telling spooky stories.
Think about what images are usually
associated with Halloween (bats,
spiders, pumpkins, ghosts etc) then
show them some images that use
silhouettes. The children can create
their own spooky silhouette scene.
You will need:
Activity:
P ractise blending two different colours of Colour Marker
ink together with water and a paintbrush before starting.
The water-based ink in Berol Colour Markers is easy to
blend but don’t let it dry out for too long before starting!
U se the orange Colour Marker to make a border
all around the edge of the paper. Don’t worry
about being too neat but do go right to the edge.
Next, use the yellow Colour Marker inside the
orange border. Leave a white area in the middle of the paper.
Berol Colour Marker pens in
orange, yellow and black
T ake a flat paintbrush and dip it into a little clean water. Brush the water over where
the orange and yellow meet.
Cartridge paper
Keep blending, brushing the colour all over the paper so that the white areas are also tinted.
Flat paintbrush
Allow the paper to dry completely.
Clean water
S ketch some spooky Halloween images onto the paper with a pencil then go over with black Colour Marker.
Fill in all the shapes to create silhouettes.

Performance To Be Proud Of
Do your pupils have a preferred pen? Studies have shown that a favourite pen can help students
approach schoolwork with a positive attitude. Of course, over-use can mean pens have to be
replaced frequently but after carrying out product tests, we’re pleased to report that Berol pens
last longer.
We carried out a number of product quality tests for write-out length, cap-off life and
washability in the Handwriting Pens and Colouring Felt Pens category. The results spoke for
themselves; Berol had excellent cap-off life and washability, but out write out length really
stood-out in the tests.
The number one back-to-school Handwriting Pen has a cap-off life of 8 hours, a washability
score of ‘A’ and a write out length of 2,162 meters, that’s 43 laps of an Olympic size swimming
pool! A long lasting pen is crucial when learning to write, the Berol handwriting pen has a slight
resistance to paper, which helps pupils to control the formation of letters with ease.
The Berol Colour Fine Felt Pen is perfect for adding details to creative drawings and writing
available in a number of bold, bright colours. The cap-off life is 29 days and write out length for
the Berol Colour Fine is 1,000 metres. That’s the same height as the future ‘Kingdom Tower’, the
highest in the world, being built in Saudi Arabia near the Red Sea!
The Berol Colour Broad Felt Pen out-performed competitors with a cap-off life of 22.5 days and
a write out length of 450 metres. One of the world’s largest waterfalls Sandstone Falls in West
Virginia in the United States measures 457 metres wide, that’s a lot of writing!
Product of the Month
A
s we know that the best way for children to grow in confidence with their
writing is through being creative and having fun. Specially designed with the
little ones in mind, the Berol Marker livens up the page and the imagination with
12 bright colours to choose from.
However, creativity can often be a little messy which is why the Marker ink can
be easily washed off skin and clothes, has a low odour ink and can even last two
weeks without the top on.
Available in both a round tip and also a wedge tip, the Berol Marker makes a
great tool for lettering, diagrams, broad colouring and drawing. Best of all, the nib
is double ended and can be reversed to give the marker a longer life.
We’re giving Teachers’ Club members a chance to get a FREE box of Colour
Markers. We have 250 boxes to give away, email [email protected]
