Shaker Village.
Shaker Village,
nestled on 1750 acres of land with seventeen historic buildings ranging from the
1780s through the 1950s, is home to the
only active Shaker Community in the
world and continues to accept new members. Visitors are welcome to join the
Shakers for Sunday worship services, beginning promptly at 10am and lasting
approximately one-hour. The Shakers keep an active farm with Scottish
highland cattle, a flock of sheep, bees, pigs, and many working barn cats.
While most of the land is managed forest, the Shakers have a large, 21-acre
apple orchard, herb and vegetable gardens, expansive hay fields, and many
acres of crop fields under the management of Chipman Farm in Poland,
Maine. Shaker Village is listed as a National Historic Landmark and on the
National Register of Historic Places.
Shaker Store.
The Shakers
had a store, perhaps as early as
the 1790s, where they sold commodities and provisions to their
hired men and outsiders. Today,
the Shaker Store is housed in the

Shakers offer a wide selection of
Maine-made
craft,
including
woodenware, textiles, and knit goods. Additionally, the Shakers offer a
number of specialty items produced at Shaker Village, including jellies, pickles, culinary herbs and herbal teas, herbal vinegars, infused herbal olive oil,
old-fashioned biscuit mix, and much more. The Shaker Store is open Memorial Day through Columbus Day Weekend; Monday – Saturday, 10am –
4:30pm. After Columbus Day, the Store is only open on Saturdays until the
Shaker Christmas Fair on Dec. 5th.

was established by Elder Otis Sawyer (1815-1884) as
a repository with 191 records of the most important
of the Shakers’ publications, pamphlets and other
materials that illustrated valuable aspects of Shaker
beliefs, lifestyle, and industry. Today, the Shaker

the 18th century into the present day, including
printed books by and about the Shakers, handwritten journals and diaries, financial records, letters,
song books, addresses and sermons, recipe books,

with postcards, stereoview cards, and cabinet cards; in addition to a large
number of product labels, advertising broadsides, catalogs, posters, and other ephemera – all related to the Shakers from the 1700s into the present
day. The collection includes a wide variety of materials about other religious sects. The Shaker Library is among the largest research collections
devoted to Shaker history in the world. Appointments are required. Business hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:30am – 4:30pm; closed for lunch 11:45am –
12:45pm.
