Mar Menor is a saltwater lagoon
which is next to the Mediterranean
Sea; its ecological and natural
features make it a haven for those
who love nautical sports all year
round.
This area, in Costa Cálida, has
more than 50 beaches to offer,
suitable for all tastes: some of them
are not deep and therefore allow
the youngest members of the family
to have fun; some other beaches
are bathed by the Mediterranean
in Cartagena, La Manga and San
Pedro del Pinatar.

MAR MENOR
Los Alcázares, San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar
The Mar Menor coast has numerous charming villages. In San Pedro del Pinatar,
besides having fun by the sea at some places like Lo Pagán, you can improve your
health with its famous mud baths.
San Javier, where the General Air Academy is, offers calm waters in Santiago de
la Ribera; there, as well as in Los Alcázares, the waters are excellent to bathe and
to play nautical sports. Other beaches of Mar Menor are Playa Honda, Mar de Cristal,
Islas Menores, Los Nietos and Los Urrutias.

Culture
Murcia is the capital city of the
region. Here you can walk
everywhere to enjoy a wide variety
of museums and monuments,
events and shows.
Murcia is usually described as one
of the Mediterranean’s Baroque
capital cities: it counts on many
different monuments from the 18th
Century.
One of the best examples is Santa
María Cathedral, which is more
than 600 years old and has an
impressive baroque facade.
Cultural visits
Santa María Cathedral
Real Casino in Murcia
This Cathedral is tremendously beautiful
and has different architectural styles, from
the Renaissance facade with its bell tower,
and the Puerta de los Apóstoles and the
Flamboyant Gothic Vélez Chapel, to the
impressive baroque facade.
This building has been recently restored and
is placed in Trapería street, in the centre of
the city. It has a mixture of the different art
styles which coexisted during the second half
of the 19th Century and the beginning of the
20th Century. It has been declared a national
historic and artistic monument, and it is
considered to be a cultural asset. You
shouldn’t miss the Arabic Courtyard, the
Ballroom, the Ladies’ Restroom, the Tearoom
or the Pool Hall.

Festivities which Have Been Declared of Tourist Interest
Holy Week
There are 15 brotherhoods: fifteen
associations, each one with thousands of
moved processionists that turn into
estantes, penitents or musicians responsible
for the sound that accompanies and
characterises certain parts of the
processions -the long sound of the tubas,
instruments that are as huge as the groans
they produce.
Moros y Cristianos –Moors
and Christians- (September)
The Moor and Christian Camps and the
popular parades of their respective armies
and musical groups give a historical colour
to these festivities, completed with the Feria
Taurina –Bullfighting Festival-. During the
Feria Taurina, and thanks to the best
Spanish matadors, the Condomina bullring
sells out.
Fiestas de Primavera –Spring
FestivitiesDuring the Fiestas de Primavera, Murcia
celebrates the Bando de la Huerta and the
Entierro de la Sardina; both festivities have
been declared to be of International Tourist
Interest. In the Bando de la Huerta –Orchard
Parade-, Murcian people as well as visitors,
dressed with the ‘huertano’ typical costume,
enjoy a festive day that comes to an end
in the evening, when a great parade goes
through the city’s streets. The Entierro de
la Sardina –Burial of the Sardine- takes
place at the end of the spring festivities. It
is a spectacular parade with about twenty
floats –one for each ‘agrupación sardinera’, from which hundreds of thousands of toys
are thrown to the audience. This festivity
finishes in the early morning, when the
sardine, amidst the revelry, is burnt at Plano
de San Francisco.
Festivals
Murcia Tres Culturas (May)
SOS 4.8 (May)
Murcia Tres Culturas, the International
Festival for Tolerance, shows that it is
possible for different peoples, having
different beliefs and coming from different
cultures, to live together in peace. It is a
message of solidarity and respect that, by
means of music and dance, sounds in
Murcia’s emblematic streets and squares,
which are meeting points for artists coming
from more than twenty different countries.
It is a young and modern initiative, an
International Artistic Action Festival with the
motto ‘SOStenibilidad’ -Sustainability-.
It sets in May every year 48 non-stop hours
of music, contemporary art and reflection.

Since ancient times, this Port of
Cultures was the main base of the
kingdom that was founded in Spain

This park of 25,000 m2 is the biggest in
the peninsula; in ancient times, it was a
Carthaginian and a Roman base. A series
of archaeological remains in the open air,
found here, have recently been enhanced:
indigenous dwellings, a Syrian temple of
Goddess Atargatis, the old wall of Felipe V
or of the Dean, and a windmill. It has turned
to be one of the best viewpoints to

Carthaginians and Romans
Semana Santa
(September)
This festivity, based on history and
archaeology of Cartagena, recalls one of
the most important historical periods for
the identity of this town. From the arrival in
223 BC of Asdrúbal, who founded the town
–Quart-Hadasth-, to the moment when he
was defeated by Publio Cornelio Escipión,
in 209 BC, the year in which the town started
to belong to the Roman Empire. A landing
commemorates the taking of the town, in
209 BC, by Scipio’s Roman troops, and a
festive week starts, with days dedicated to
both sides.
www.cartaginesesyromanos.es
Cartagena experiences these days with a
devotion transmitted to inhabitants and
foreigners, united with one objective,
although divided in expression. The rivalry
between ‘marrajos’ and ‘californios’ has an
essence which goes beyond competition.
These are intense festivities, and visitors
will notice that the sculptures of the
processions have the quality and signature
of the best sculptors.

Visits
Some interesting spots are the Los
Cenajos and Pino de la Muela viewpoints, which offer wonderful views of
the mountain range and the snow pits.
Moreover, there is an important network
of mountain shelters and water points
that will make your visit to the Park
easier.
Visits
Besides its natural interest, El Carche
is important for its history and culture.
You can visit an old snow pit from the
17th C, witness of an obsolete activity.
An activity still prevalent is salt extraction
at the Cabezo de la Rosa salt mines.

In the centre of the Region of Murcia
and to the east of Sierra Espuña are
the Barrancos de Gebas –Gebas
Ravines–, which belong to the basin
of the Rambla de Algeciras. It is an
area of deeply eroded sedimentary
materials that resulted in the so-called
badlands.
Those who love walking will enjoy a
track going from the Caserío de Gebas
to a viewpoint, at the heart of this
natural setting, offering an outstanding
panoramic view.
Cabezo Gordo Protected Landscape
is constituted by an enormous mountain
of metamorphic and calcareous nature
which exceeds the height of 300 m.
above sea level. It is located to the
northwest of Mar Menor.
The Sima de las Palomas site, where
remains of Neanderthal man were
found, is of great interest: it is the most
important settlement in the Spanish
Mediterranean Arch.

The first kilometres of the River Segura
in the Region of Murcia go through its
northwest area. This Nature Reserve
has one of the Region of Murcia’s best
riparian forests, ecosystems which are
scarce in the region and therefore have
a special value.
If you love walking, you can explore
the Senda de la Huertecica, which
goes along the right bank of the River
Segura, at the very heart of a superb
riparian forest.

The abrupt Sierra de Salinas is a massif
of medium height next to Alicante. It is
at the northeast of the Region of
Murcia.
The northwest has the Region of
Murcia’s best stretches of river
ecosystems. Almadenes –between
Calasparra and Cieza– is a natural
setting where the river Segura
excavates a deep canyon, at the
bottom of which it flows, quietly
sometimes and roughly some other
times.
This inland wetland is at one of the
Region of Murcia’s driest places, in the
northeastern area, and has soft
sedimentary materials which are easily
eroded. The confluence of several
watercourses results in these wet
ecosystems. The Santomera reservoir
forms a permanently flooded area. It
is a good spot for bird watching, mostly
in spring and autumn.
You can explore different environments
at Rambla Salada and Humedal de
Ajauque, in order to get to know the
vegetation’s adaptation to salinity, this
wetland’s various vegetation formations
(reedbed, tamarisk, salt marsh and
pegano-salsoletea) and the area’s
typical birds.

As well as La Pila, El Carche and

the Betic Mountain Ranges. They are
of limestone.

It is possible now to enjoy river
descents in the canyon, either rafting

Since Roman times, vines have
been grown and wine has been
produced in the Region of
Murcia. It benefits from excellent
weather conditions, soil and
human resources for grapegrowing and producing quality
wines.
The variety of different soils and
climate conditions allows the
production of an extensive range
of red, rosé and white wines for
all tastes and palates. Three
PDO wine areas stand out:
Bullas, Jumilla and Yecla.
The grape type which is mostly
used to produce wine is
Monastrell, a red variety with
small, compact bunches, which
is perfectly adapted to the
environmental conditions in this
area.
Monastrell wines are deeply
coloured and full-bodied and
come in a very extensive, high
quality range. Other varieties
which are selected to produce
wine are Teinturier Grenache,
Cencibel, Cabernet-Sauvignon,
Grenache, Merlot, Syrah and
Petit Verdot for red and rosé; in
addition, Macabeo, Airen, Pedro
Ximenez, Malvasia, Chardonnay,
Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat
varieties.

If the district of Bullas is known for
something, it is for its wine-growing
tradition.
In Bullas, wine is the ultimate
expression of a town devoted to tending
vines since its very origins, both
defining it and filling it with pride. A
traditional craft that has matured over
time, lovingly nurtured by its people in
the hope of a rich reward: full-bodied
wines abounding in character that linger
not only on the palate but also in the
memory.
Granted in 1994, the Bullas Protected
Denomination of Origin takes in the
districts of Bullas, Mula, Ricote,
Cehegín, Lorca, Pliego, Caravaca,
Moratalla and Calasparra.
A stroll along its streets full of history
or a chat with the local people will
reveal how the town has been linked
to the delicious fruit of the vine since
the remotest of times.
Eleven wineries have been registered
in the Regulatory Board, which
everyday works hard for these PDO
wines to be well situated and renowned
as they deserve at both national and
international markets. With this aim,
they attend the industry’s most
important events and fairs with the
different wines, and communicate part
of their wine culture and tradition to the
public.
Bullas Wine Route Association is the
entity in charge of the regulation,
promotion and administration of ‘Bullas
Wine Route’ tourist destination. It
promotes the organisation of different
activities so that they contribute to the
development of wine tourism.

JUMILLA PDO REGULATORY BOARD

www.vinosdejumilla.org
Jumilla is one of Spain's oldest
Protected Denomination of Origin wine
areas, which has been regulated since
1966.
It is on the southeast of Spain, and is
characterised by wide valleys and
plains, marked by mountains. It is a
transition area between the
Mediterranean Levante coast and the
Castilla-La Mancha plateau. The wine
production covers two wide areas: the
municipality of Jumilla, from the Region
of Murcia, where the Regulatory Board
has its head office, and the
municipalities of Montealegre del
Castillo, Fuente Álamo, Ontur, Hellín,
Albatana and Tobarra, from the
province of Albacete.
The wines being produced in Jumilla
are of exquisite quality, thanks to the
diversity of grape varieties that can be
found in the area, with Monastrell as
the queen of them all.
Jumilla is somewhere you can immerse
yourself in the culture, tradition and
customs of a wine-growing area with
deep roots. Explore its vineyards, visit
its numerous wineries and find out all
about wine-making, step by step. Stay
in rural surroundings, enjoy the local
cuisine... And, of course, take
advantage of the opportunities it offers
to get to know its historical, cultural
and natural heritage.
As well as being famous for its wines,
Jumilla is also home to many other
treasures that are well worth
discovering.
Centuries ago, the town was famous
for being a geographical and cultural
crossroads and, as such, you will find
historical and artistic vestiges of all the
Mediterranean civilizations. It is not
without reason that this is a prosperous
area full of contrasts, which the Arabs
called 'the beautiful'. Thanks to its
monuments, museums and other visitor
and cultural attractions, in 1981 the
town was declared a site of historical
and artistic interest.
By following the Wine Route, visitors
will be able to dive into Jumilla’s culture,
tradition and custom.
Jumilla and its Wine Route offer
experiences such as walking among
its vineyards, visiting a winery and
finding out all about wine-making,
staying in rural surroundings, enjoying
a good wine and the local cuisine at a
restaurant... And, of course, taking
advantage of the opportunities it offers
to get to know its Historical, Cultural
and Natural Heritage.

Savouring wines from the Yecla
Protected Denomination of Origin wine
area is a real experience, an adventure
that will take you back to the origins of
a land whose roots are deeply
embedded in its wine-growing tradition.
Its wines are pronounced and at the
same time creative in character,
revealing noble, complex and rich
nuances in the glass.
Set in the middle of the highlands,
between the coastal mountain ranges
and the La Mancha plateau, Yecla
paints its visitors a picture of exceptional
beauty, where arid stone landscapes
contrast with fields of olive trees,
cereals and vineyards.
The different grape varieties show the
personality of the land where they were
grown, and offer flavours and tastes
which hide the secrets of wine artists.
The Yecla PDO Regulatory Board tests
both the grapes and the wines
produced endorsing their quality in
order to ensure that every bottle offers
a genuine flavour experience.
This demanding mission involves the
monitoring of vineyards and wineries
by the qualified control board team,
which also periodically analyses the
wines in order to guarantee their
authenticity, distinguished by the seal
on the back label.
The Yecla Wine Route is an entity
leaded by the Yecla City Council, the
Yecla PDO Regulatory Board, several
local institutions and a group of
members interested in the development
of wine tourism, agro-industry, culture,
industrial heritage, the creation of
instruments for local promotion and
diversification of the economic activity.
ASSOCIATED ESTABLISHMENTS
The Yecla Wine Route makes it

great number of traditional wineries, most of which
were built between the 18th and 19th centuries.
It is a two-day wine and cuisine route in the three
PDO districts of the Region of Murcia: Bullas, Jumilla
and Yecla.
This route includes the visit to the Region of Murcia’s

and typical dishes, but also culture and emblematic
places in Bullas, Jumilla and Yecla.

area, which use Monastrell as their main grape variety.
You will also visit some significant places such as the
Palacio del Concejo -located in the Plaza Mayor
Ensemble-, which has a beautiful marble staircase
and a chapterhouse with a wooden coffered ceiling
from the 18thC.

which are visited include organic wines in their
catalogue.

Balnearios in the Region
of Murcia
A balneario or thermal spring spa
has mineral-medicinal waters
declared of public interest, medical
services and adequate premises to
carry out any prescribed treatments.
The waters of balnearios, during
their way under the ground, take
the minerals which give them
mineral-medicinal properties.
Thanks to these features,
balnearios are perfect for bone
ailments, muscular pain, respiratory
and dermatological problems, since
they optimize rehabilitation.
Archena, Fortuna and Mazarrón

balnearios where you will be able
to forget daily routine and stress.
Their nice premises make the

Thalassotherapy centers
in the Region of Murcia
Thalassotherapy includes sea
water, its setting and the sun’s
radiation. These aspects make the
positive ions accumulated in our
body –which produce stress,
exhaustion and discomfortdisappear. And, thanks to oxygen
and negative ions present in a sea
atmosphere, you will experience a
feeling of well-being and freshness.
For its use, the impurities of the
waters are eliminated and these
waters are used at a temperature
of 40 degrees max.
Mar Menor is a health sea, and its
properties and muds are unique.
There are no waves, the sea is not
deep and salinity is high; all this
increases flotation and helps to
move more easily.
Seaweeds, plankton, iodine and
the other sea elements make
treatments with sea water very
helpful to fight stress, rheumatism,
osteoarthritis, dermatological
problems, osteoporosis, muscular
problems…
