The American Women’s Club of the Taunus e.V. was founded in February 1971. The club is a
non-political, non-denominational organization, which promotes the public good (especially
education and training through the support of schools, higher educational institutions and
projects as well as the giving of scholarships to persons in addition to supporting social, cultural
and medical institutions and projects) nationally and internationally. In addition to this objective,
the AWCT intends to advance international understanding, advance cultural exchanges among
Americans and other nationalities, assist in achieving a better understanding of Germany and

So long, Farewell, and Bis Bald

t is that time of year again. For many of us, it is
time to return home for a visit, and to fill up on
all those things you miss most when living
abroad. For me, it means cruising through the
mega-grocery stores or the malls to see what is
new, buying a suitcase full of books, and listening
to people talk about what they spend their time
and money on (which often become the future
trends in Germany). I also go on a “junk food diet”
consisting of Fritos, Doritos, Baskin Robbins,
KrispyKremes, bagels, Mexican food, and more.
just like when initially going abroad. We have to
consciously work at reintegration and adaptation
and try to be understanding when people you meet
treat you with scepticism or envy.
But, I also inevitably suffer from reverse culture
shock. Were small cokes always this big? And why
do they have to build a new shopping center every
two years when the old malls are still there? Didn’t
anyone here ever hear of zoning?! I sometimes feel
like an alien that has landed on Planet America. But
my visits last only a few weeks.
Please remember to pass the word about our club
activities, especially to any newcomers to the area:

Many of you, on the other hand, will be returning
for good after a number of years abroad. And that
is a real challenge. According to the author and
expat expert, the late David Pollock, repatriation is
harder than expatriation. When returning home,
you forget that not only have you changed, but your
home culture has changed in your absence as well.
His rule of thumb was to double the number of
years you spent abroad and to use that as an
indication on how “estranged” you are from your
homeland. The resulting figure can be a bit of a
shock (58 in my case!), but what it is meant to tell
us is that we have to mentally prepare for the move,

Hello everyone! Contrary to popular fiction, the video library is alive and well. In addition to our
traditional stock of videos to rent, we also have been accumulating a substantial collection of DVD’s
that is constantly being added to. Opening hours remain the same as they have always been
(Mon,Wed, Fri –9:30-11:30). If no one is there on a particular day then the keys can be obtained from
Stella. Checking out procedures are outlined on the desk in the library. We are always looking for
volunteers as Susan and I get lonely down there. As of right now, we are planning to keep the library
open during the summer months subject to AWCT office opening hours. If you need someone to
talk to concerning the videos\DVD’s, I will continue to be there on Wednesdays. See you there.

The Ramada Hotel Bad Soden lies directly next to the spa gardens of Bad Soden in the Taunus
Mountains. The city offers sights like the Hundertwasser House, the old spa hotel, as well as the cozy
Old Town with its many shopping facilities. The Main River, metropolis Frankfurt, and the regional capital
Wiesbaden can be reached within only 20 minutes. The hotel is situated 5 minutes away from autobahn
A66, and in 3 minutes on foot, you can reach the urban railway and bus stations (directions will be in
the September newsletter).

Election Time

T
here are several misconceptions about
voting from abroad in U.S. elections.
#1: There isn’t an election until 2008.
INCORRECT: Mid-term elections will be held on
November 7, 2006, where all 435 seats in the
House of Representatives and one-third of the
Senate will be elected.
#2: Without a U.S. address, I can’t vote.
INCORRECT: Your legal voting address is your
last home before leaving the U.S. If you never lived
in the U.S., many states allow the use of your
American parents’ address.

#3: I already registered last election.
INCORRECT:
True,
California
permits
permanent absentee registration and a recent
Federal law states that the request should be
valid for four years. However, there are 3,000
different local authorities, each with their own
interpretation of the law. Better to be safe than
sorry and request a ballot each election year.
#4:
Overseas
ballots
aren’t
counted.
INCORRECT: By law, every absentee ballot must
be counted before the final vote count can be

certified. However, if the number of outstanding
ballots is smaller than the difference of the vote
count between two candidates, a winner may be
called.
#5: If I vote, the IRS will hassle me.
INCORRECT: Voting in U.S. Federal elections
does not affect the determination of your tax
residence. However, voting in state and local
elections can affect state and local tax status.
#6: Voting from abroad is too complicated.
INCORRECT: Requesting an absentee ballot can
now be done online at www.overseasvote.org. It
only takes a couple of minutes.
And to make things even easier, the following
states allow either receiving or receiving and
sending ballots by email: North Dakota, South
Carolina, Montana, Florida, Virginia, Wisconsin,
Washington, Illinois, and Missouri.
Overseas Citizens Voters Week is July 2-8 so take
the time to register!
Traffic Rules for Cyclists
B
iking in Germany is not the toodling-about
that many of us grew up with in the States.
Here, it is a serious form of transport. If you’re
going to ride your bike on the streets in Germany
you must follow the German traffic ordinances,
Straßenverkehrsordnung.
This
includes
stopping at stop signs and red lights. Cyclists
have the same rights and responsibilities as
cars.
The chance of getting caught breaking the rules
is slim, but if you think it doesn’t matter you are
WRONG! Accidents do occur, and if you were not
adhering to the rules of the road you will be held
liable.
Here’s a summary of the most important rules
and regulations:
Bike paths: If there is a path, it must be used. Bike
and pedestrian paths are clearly marked with
blue signs. Sometimes there is an additional
sign underneath with the word “frei”, which
means the types of traffic on the sign may also
use the path. Generally, cyclists coming from the
right have the right of way. A red circle with a
bicycle means “no biking allowed”. A triangle with

Streets: When there’s no sign the cyclist must
use the street and not the sidewalk. Ride single
file. Only children under the age of eight may use
the sidewalk. Children between eight and ten can
use both the sidewalk and street.

keep to the side of the path indicated by the sign.

One-way streets: Cycling against the
automobile flow is allowed only if there is a
bicycle sign with the word “frei” (Fahrrad frei).
Otherwise, it is not allowed.
Pedestrian zones: Taboo for cyclists. Get off and
walk. This also goes for pedestrian crossings
(the zebra stripes).
Walkman & ipods, cellphones, drinking
alcohol: All are absolutely forbidden (and
absolutely stupid!).
Helmets: Not required by law, but a very wise
thing to do.
Make sure your bicycle is in working order. The
ordinances require that all bicycles be
“verkehrssicher” (traffic-sure). This includes:
two separate, independent brakes; one front,
one back
a warning bell
a front lamp that shines 15-20 meters
a red back light
a red rear reflector
yellow pedal reflectors
reflectors on the wheels
If you’re not sure if your bike is up to par, take it
to the local bikeshop. They’ll fix it up for you.
Insurance:
Our first year in Germany, my husband got his
bicycle wheel caught in the Straßenbahn tracks
and veered into an oncoming car. Luckily, he
wasn’t hurt, but we had to pay for damage done
to the car.

About the same time, we met an American family
whose 8-year-old biked out in between parked
cars and was hit by a brand-new Mercedes. The
kid suffered a broken leg. After he was all patched
up, the driver of the Mercedes came up to the dad
in the hospital hall to discuss how he would pay
for the dent in his car. The dad, who was not
aware of German bicycling laws, almost
punched the guy. He didn’t know that he was
liable for his kid. Of course, dad paid up in the end.
The bottom line is that all bicyclists are at risk of
causing accidents. It’s imperative to have liability
insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung). Hundreds
of thousands of bikes are stolen in German every

included in your household insurance, might be
a good idea. You might also consider accident
insurance
and/or
lawsuit
insurance
(Rechtsschutz).
Germans are aggressive cyclists. They know
when they have the right of way, and they take it.
The keys to safe biking include being predictable
and visible. It’s important to communicate your
intentions to motorists. Use hand signals. Learn
the rules of the road and be careful!

Summer Kid’s Activities
We have three fantastic activities to help keep you and
the kids entertained this summer. Jennifer Grunenberg
kicks off with open-air swimming at Seedambad in Bad
Homburg early in July. In late July, Mothers’ Corner’s
very own super chef, Maddalena Tosoni, hosts a
gourmet Italian Deli lunch at Opel Zoo, and then in
August, the fabulous Simone Schobert of Music
Together will be guiding us through an afternoon of
music and fun at the Palmengarten.
We have had some great suggestions for events plus
volunteers to organize them – thank you all for this. If
you have an idea for an event, would like to organize
an event yourself or have some feedback on an event

an alternative for those without a car coming from the
city. We will meet across from the Gonzenheim U-Bahn
station in the Taunus Sparkasse’s parking lot. Important
to know: take the U-2 train that goes all the way to
Gonzenheim. Some trains go no farther than NiederEschbach. It’s a ten to fifteen minute scenic walk to the
swimming pool.

iving abroad can be a tremendously exciting
and enriching experience. Through the workplace, schools, religious affiliations, and
organizations like the AWCT, we have the chance
to experience a different culture and form new
friendships.
However, sometimes personal problems arise
which are difficult to handle in the absence of the
support of the network of family and close friends
we left back home. Since 1978 CARES has
bridged this “support gap” in facing a wide range
of unforeseen problems and circumstances - from
a sudden death, illness, or other emergency to the
difficulties of coping in a new culture. Although not
professionally trained counselors, CARES
volunteers will listen, provide general support,
and provide resource referrals. CARES
maintains a list of English speaking physicians,
psychologists, dentists, attorneys, tax
accountants and pet-sitters in the AWCT area.
All inquiries are held strictly confidential.
Whether you need a sounding board in working
through a problem of you are seeking a specific
referral, feel free to call one of the volunteers listed
below. It doesn’t have to be a crisis. Just call. You
can also e-mail us with questions at
[email protected] or to our personal e-mail
addresses listed below. Please note “CARES” in
the subject line of your e-mail for a faster response.

What’s on in July/August
ears ago, children were often told by their
mothers, “you might be run over by a bus,”
when the offspring were being difficult about
putting on clean underwear (the point being that
they would appear in hospital with dirty
underwear). Why don’t I bring this a little more up
to date? Imagine a farmer getting ready for bed.
His wife looks at him and says, “You have to throw
away those underpants, look at the holes.” And
he says to her, “Why, no one will see them.” The
very next day, at least 8 people did see them; I can
vouch for that since I was one of the eight. How did
it happen? We were going on a trip to a Falkland
Island farm to see peat cutting and sheep
shearing. From our ship we needed zodiacs,
small rubber dinghies, to land on the shore. Piero
and I boarded one with 6 others and a Russian
driver; the sea was calm and we neared the
beach looking for a good place to get through the
breakers. Unfortunately, we went through a patch
of heavy seaweed, some of which caught in the
zodiac’s propeller, and our driver had to stop the
engine and clean the blades. Of course, in the
meantime, we had drifted nearer to the beach
and before Sergey could start the engine again,
a large wave broke over the zodiac and
overturned it, throwing us all into the sea. The next
few minutes were not pleasant but fast forward to
the moment we were all on the beach surrounded
by the farmer, his wife, and several others who
had been waiting for the group to arrive, had seen
what had happened, and had all helped to pull us
from the sea. Immediately, they told us to come
to the nearby farmhouse. We were told to take off
our wet clothes and we were given rugs, duvets,
anything, in fact, which would cover us. Then we
eight sat in the kitchen, having cups of tea and
being lovingly attended to. The islanders were
magnificent; of course it was a frightening
experience, but their kindness somehow
ameliorated the whole thing. And because the
farmer had rushed into the sea to help rescue us,
he too, had to take off his wet things and there he
was in the kitchen, putting peat into the stove to
warm us up, in his “holey” underpants. It was at
this point that his wife told us what she had said
to him the night before. So, let that be a lesson to
us all; always put on clean underwear, you never
know what might happen to you!

“Jazz meets Blues in Big Band Sound” is played

The much loved “Jazz Idstein Festival” takes
place between July 14-16. There are open-air
stages scattered around the town for the bands;
there are activities for kids and plenty of eats and
drinks for the thirsty and hungry and all with the
backdrop of the lovely half-timbered houses. Info:

The Burg in Königstein is a busy place in the
summer. On July 21, “Jesus Christ Superstar”

performed on 19th, and “Das Phantom der Oper”
on 21st. All open-air.
In the Amphitheater, Hanau, there is an “Abba
Night” on August 12 and “Das Phantom der

The Burg in Kronberg is also a busy place: July
15, there will be French chansons. August 12,

EXHIBITIONS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
Naturally, soccer is still the big topic of interest
this month. Until July 9, no one will know which
team will be the world champion. Frankfurt’s
museums are devoting much space and time to
this subject. Here are some of the exhibitions.
The Museum der Weltkulturen presents “Kick it.
Fußball international”, with a series of photos
from 12 countries showing the variety of how the
game is played – children playing with balls
made from banana leaves, for example. Until July
30. Museum der Weltkulturen, Schaumainkai 2937.
“Kick it like Kissinger. Ein Fußbalphabet”, is the
show in the Museum Judengasse. It tells about
Jewish players, officials, and journalists in the
form of an alphabet. For instance, “K” as in
Kissinger, because the former US foreign
secretary still supports his old sports club in
Germany. Or “Y” for non-Jewish fans who called
themselves “Yidds.” Until September 3. Museum
Judengasse Frankfurt, Untermainkai.
In the Deutsche Filmmuseum until September
17, “fussball.still” presents collages and
paintings by the artist Volker Hildebrand. From TV
and films, he took single pictures –stills and
created collages and series of pictures. There is
also an area, decorated in an artificial green turf,
where you can watch some of the spectacular
moments
in
soccer
history.

The connection between soccer and media is
shown in the show, “Manndeckung –
Pressefotos vom Spielfeldrand”. It allows an
unusual look at the press mob which gathers at

“Helden-Heilige-Himmelsstürme” is the name
of the exhibition in the Icon Musuem. Is there a
similarity between religion and soccer? Aren’t
famous soccer players treated like saints? Isn’t
the crowd going into the stadiums rather like
pilgrims going to the promised land? All these
questions and more are dealt with. Until August

The Architectural Museum gets into the soccer
mood by showing the story of the building of the
Commerzbank-Arena in a show called, “Vom
Stadion im Stadtwald zur Fifa WM-Arena

And all the Frankfurt museums will show their
respect for “König Fußball” by participating in the
Museumsuferfest, between July 7-9. Normally,

The
Main
embankment (both sides) will be a busy place,
with the area set aside for fans to watch the
games on giant screens, and the crowds for the
Museumsuferfest.
FussBallFest in the Jahrhunderthalle. On July 1,
4-5, 8-9 you can watch the match on a large
screen. I mean, if you can’t be at the real thing,
then the Jahrhunderthalle might be a good
alternative. The seats are numbered, no problem
with weather conditions, there is free parking and
plenty of refreshments. There will also be a
supporting program so… the atmosphere
should be great. Tickets cost 12 euro (for final, 15

Last year, the Limes was declared a World
Heritage Area by UNESCO. The Limes (Latin for
frontier road) was the military border of the
Roman Empire and was built in the first century
A.D. Its length was 548 km and it was fortified. Part
of the Limes runs through Hesse and having
become a World Heritage Area there is more
interest in the Roman fortresses, one of which is
the Saalburg; therefore, there are many more
events happening there. Every Sunday, at 11 am,
1 and 3 pm, there are guided tours in the fortress.
On the weekend of July 29-30 and August 19-20,
the oven will be heated and you can watch
demonstrations of how bread was made in the
Roman times. From July 17-21, there is a special
children’s program and the last evening will
include archery, spear throwing, a campfire, and
a quiz. Not exactly Roman, but entertaining
nevertheless, is the July 15 Hot-Jazz-Festival.

“Stomp” comes back to Frankfurt. From August
15-23, you can see how the sound is created from
all sorts of objects. Fascinating.

From July 21-30, there is a display of fuchsias in
the Palmengarten to celebrate the occasion of
the 25th anniversary of the German Fuchsia
Society.
I am not sure about this: “Nothing” is an art show
in the Schirn which is opening on July 12. Imagine
paying good money to get into a show about …
nothing. The description of the exhibition is this:
‘Stillness, emptiness, silence – the pause, the
gap, the omission are increasingly significant in
today’s society of images … art is responding to
daily quantities of visual information by emptying
the image … the gaze into the void thus unveils
the peripheral. What remains is a diverse,
shimmering nothing!’ (my exclamation mark.)
Like I said, you are paying to see nothing. Very
interesting. Until October.
Another show at the Schirn is “Conquering the
Streets”, which runs until September 3. ‘In 3
chapters – Urbanism, Commerce, and Politics –
the exhibition will treat, using the examples of
Paris and Berlin, the connection between urban
development
and
the
transformation
of
individuals determined by it and relate the
political concept of populism to modern urban
development’. Painters such as Pissarro,
Kirchner, and Grosz are represented.
Quite apart from seeing the animals in the Opel
Zoo, there are other attractions offered. For
example, from July 19-23, “Abenteuer Zoo” gives
children between the ages of 6-16 the opportunity
to overnight in a tent on the zoo grounds, along
with a campfire and activities. Then there are
guided tours (in German).

It proved very successful last year so the Opel Zoo
is repeating its “ZooFari” again, August 25-26, in
the evenings. The “African nights” will be filled
with watching the animals, seeing them be fed,
hearing African rhythms, and there is even a

Kronenhof, 20 hot-air balloons will take off in the
evenings. And on the Saturday evening the
highlight of the festival will be the “Night Glow”,
when the balloons will be illuminated by their gas

The miniMAL Happy Family day takes place on

Aschaffenburg will be pulsating with African/
Caribbean rhythm between August 11-14. There

und Moritz,” on the open-air stage at 5 pm. On
August 13, there is “Brunnenfest,” and then from
19-25, a Children’s Week takes place; 20th there
is a Farmers’ Market and on 26-27, the 10th Hop

You will have to be an early bird to see the
participants in the vintage car rally on July 2 in
Bad Homburg in front of the Kaiser Wilhelm Bad.

The Iron Man competition takes place in
Frankfurt on July 23. Watch highly trained athletes

Horse racing takes place on July 15, at 3 pm, on

Ambassador William R. Timken, Jr., to
serve as Acting Principal Officer of the U.S.
Consulate General in the city of Frankfurt. She
holds the rank of Counselor in the Senior Foreign
Service. Besides Frankfurt, Ms. Geeta Pasi has
served in India, Romania, Ghana, and
Cameroon, and has held other important
positions in the Department of State in
Washington, D.C., including as a member of the
Secretary of State’s advance team.

During a meeting of AGBC (American-German
Business Club Frankfurt e.V.), Ms. Geeta Pasi
referred to our constantly changing world and the
changing role of diplomacy. “We live in
extraordinary times,” she stated. “The following
story underscores the constant need to challenge
assumptions to see the true picture. It provides a
perfect backdrop to discuss diplomacy in the
future. – In an old edition of a diplomatic magazine,
the cover photo showed two men. One was a
European man in his mid-fifties, wearing a lightcolored safari suit. The other gentleman was a
pygmy, wearing a loincloth and holding a spear.
The caption read, “Ambassador and friend.” After
its publication, the editors began receiving queries
from readers – all asking the same – Could you
please identify which man is the Ambassador and
which one is the friend?” Geeta Pasi brought
“Transformational Diplomacy” to the point of
existing rules in a very interesting and clear way.
When did you get the idea to join the U.S. Foreign
Service?
I have always been interested in international
affairs. While at Duke University, I participated in
the State Department’s Internship Program,
fuelling my desire to pursue a career in the U.S.
Foreign Service.
What is your home state?
I come from Herkimer, New York, a small town in
the Mohawk Valley.
What are the conditions for a diplomatic
career and to whom do you recommend it?
When people ask me about my career, I always
underscore the key words – “foreign” and
“service.” One must be willing to work and live
abroad and have a strong commitment to
represent the United States. This career brings
both satisfaction and fulfillment, but it also calls
upon individuals to make sacrifices – including
separation from family and friends, and frequent
relocations. Adaptability, flexibility, and interest in
different cultures and societies are prerequisites
to a successful career.
What was your dream profession during your
childhood?
I wanted a career in education. I enjoyed school
and looked forward to each day in the classroom.
It was an environment where I learned something
new daily and was challenged to go one step
beyond. As I grew, I utilized that drive to pursue
goals which I set for myself, i.e. studying foreign
languages.
What did your family think about your plans
joining the diplomatic corps?
My family was very proud of my decision. I consider
it an honor to serve my country.
What do you especially like about Europe and
Germany?
Frankfurt. Frankfurt is a truly international city,
where one can also enjoy the best of German
cuisine, sights, and camaraderie. I enjoy visiting
the museums and also take trips into the
countryside to explore and experience this area.
Do you remember a special highlight during
your career?
I have had many interesting experiences in my
career. One that stands out particularly in
Germany was attending a reunion of the airmen
who supported the Berlin Airlift at Rhein Main Air
Force Base. Hearing Colonel Gail Halvorsen, the
Candy Bomber, tell his story and feeling the
emotion of the guests who were recipients of the
Airlift’s deliveries (including the chocolate for the
children) to Berlin so many decades ago
underscored for me how special the bond between
the U.S. and Germany truly is as well as how much
difference one person can make.

What are your suggestions to have a better
world regarding poverty, disease, peace, and
human rights?
The mission statement of the State Department
underscores the importance we attach to these
goals. We strive to “create a more secure,
democratic, and prosperous world for the benefit
of the American people and the international
community.” American diplomacy in the 21st
century is based on fundamental beliefs: our
freedom is best protected by ensuring that others
are free: our prosperity depends on the prosperity
of others; and our security relies on a global effort
to secure the rights of all. The history of the
American people is the chronicle of our efforts to
live up to our ideals. In this moment in history, we
recognize that the United States has an immense
responsibility to use its power constructively to
advance security, democracy, and prosperity
around the globe. As the late President Kennedy
said here in Frankfurt at the Paulskirche in 1963 –
“…We live in an age of interdependence as well as
independence…Today there are no exclusively
German problems, or American problems, or even
European problems. There are world problems—
and our two countries and continents are
inextricably bound together…in our commitment
we can and must speak and act with but one voice.”
This message remains vital today.
What are your priorities in life and do you have
an idol?
I strive to do the best job that I can and to represent
my country in a manner which shows respect and
dedication. Many individuals have inspired and
mentored me along the way – from my parents to
teachers to colleagues. My career has provided
me an opportunity to come in contact with a diverse
group of people – from well-known international
figures to grass roots organizers helping others
help themselves. This is a wonderful aspect of my
job.
How do you avoid stress in your responsible
position and do you still find time for hobbies?
I make an effort to work some form of exercise into
my schedule each day. I also enjoy reading,
cycling, and visiting areas around Frankfurt.
In your opinion should more women strive for
leading positions to influence world politics?
Women should pursue whatever goals they
desire, including leadership roles. Condoleeza
Rice and Angela Merkel are two excellent
examples of women leaders today.
Do you have a special message or advice for
our readers as far as integration is concerned
when residing in another country?

in another nation. People-to-people diplomacy is
highly effective. We are all ambassadors when
overseas, and people form opinions from
personal encounters with individuals from other
nations. Mutual respect and understanding are

that.

Fest”

This roundtrip bus tour will take you along the
Romantic Road to Munich where you will visit the
famous “Oktoberwiesen” for the beer festival.
The next day, you will embark on a guided city tour

Museum as well visits to the Staedel and the Schirn Art
Galleries. Future events scheduled include an English
Garden Party, a visit to the Henkell Sekt Kellerei, a tour
of Sachsenhausen, plus tours of various Frankfurt
museum special exhibitions.

NO LIMITS or SIGN OUTS. Borrow as many as you
want for as long as you want. The free self-service
book library is open during all the office hours,
Monday-Friday from 9 am to 12 noon. The library has
a large selection of books in English, including current
best-sellers, travel books, and cookbooks. Thanks to
all for your book donations. Borrowing books is FREE.
But, we’ve added one metal shelf unit of duplicate
books for purchase. If you’re going on a trip, or for
whatever purpose you want to buy and not return
some books, then you can have the opportunity.
Please put your money in the container on the
Duplicate Books for Sale shelf unit on your right as you
enter the library. Suggested donation is 1 euro a book.
