With the continued help of our sponsors and program advertisers, we will be able to help those in need in some small way, regardless of race, color or creed as they continue their education. The recipients you see tonight are the result of the Scholarship Committee processing a large selection of applicants from at least 100 schools in the 412 and 724 area codes. I firmly believe that we have one of the finest scholarship grants in Pennsylvania, and we hope to continue this service to our youth, as long as we can have the support of your attendance at the banquet or advertisement in our great program book. We would like to thank our Scholarship Sponsors, many of whom have been with us for years. He headed the Meadville Master Antenna Company which was recognized as a pioneer in the development of cable television. In his “spare time”, Jim has held several positions in local and county government in Crawford county. He is a member of the Pitt Golden Panthers, and has been a big contributor to Pitt projects. Zia Rosa Memorial Scholarship Don Bacco Memorial Scholarship Donald Joseph Bacco was born on December 14, 1929 in Lawrenceville, PA. He was the son of Joseph Guy and Alberta Emma Miller Bacco. After graduating from Schenley High School in June 1947, Don enlisted in the US Marine Corp during the Korean War. He served as a Corporal until his discharge in 1956. Joan Farrell Sangimino Memorial Scholarship He worked for Washington Trust Bank in uptown, where he met his wife of 51 years, Antoinette Nicastro. He later was co-owner of an auto wrecking business in Bethel Park and was currently owner of South Hill Vacuum Center. Don is father to Donald Joseph Bacco, Jr. and Lynn Marie Bacco-Laird. He and his family lived in South Oakland until mid 1962 when they moved to Greentree. Don was an avid bowler and went on many annual bowling tournaments. He was also very involved with his children’s sports and served as little league coach for his son’s team and also helped coach his daughter’s softball team, receiving a coaching award. He also assisted with the Morningside Bulldogs football team and served as chairman from 1971 – 1973 until the team was dismantled. Afterward he started publishing the Leash, a newsletter for former Bulldogs. He was actively involved with numerous Italian organizations in the Pittsburgh community, including serving on the board of directors for the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, Officer of the local chapter, Umberto DiNardo Council #116 of the Sons of Columbus and past President and Board Member of the Circus Saints and Sinners – Bob Prince Tent. His pride and joy over the past four years was his only grandchild, Joseph “Joey” Daniel Bacco, who was born in 2003. Don was a true family man. Ed Aiello Scholarship As a retired Vice President of Global Insurance for H.J. Heinz, Ed brings with him a distinguished forty-three year career where he held many positions in Finance and Treasury. While at Heinz, Ed was responsible for the establishment and administration of both direct writing and reinsurance captives in onshore and offshore domiciles including Bermuda, Dublin, and Vermont. He remains the Chairman of both the Vermont and Dublin captives. His experience with Property, Casualty, Benefits and Alternative Risk solutions are invaluable to our entire organization. 14 Ralph Cindrich established the Zia Rosa Scholarship in memory of his great aunt, Rose Scriva. Rose immigrated to the USA from Calabria, Italy and lived in Rochester Township, where she operated a small grocery store for many years. Known for her kindness to others and gentle spirit, this scholarship goes to a student from the Avella Area High School who emulates those qualities. Joan Farrell Sangimino was a loving wife of 55 years and mother of 5, grandmother of 11. Her heart was filled with the unconquerable strength of the Holy Spirit. Her life’s work proves that when a child is armed with faith, hope and love, there is no dream that is out of reach in higher education, sports, and life. The legacy of love she left on earth clarifies that there is no higher calling than marriage and motherhood. “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem”. Isaiah 66 : 13 Galardini Family Schloarship The Galardini family is proud to honor the many student athletes who have worked so diligently during their high school years to excel in both athletics and academics. As part of our proud Italian heritage, our family has always strived to keep the emphasis on a good education and a commitment to improving the lives of others. We hope this scholarship will be a catalyst to their future success. James Campolongo Scholarship My father James F. Campolongo, was a teacher and a coach in the Clairton school district for 36 years. He dedicated his life to working with student athletes. Jim was head football coach at Clairton for 30 years, and athlete director for 15 of those years. I wanted to continue his legacy of helping student athletes, by making this scholarship available in his honor. As a coach myself I understand the dedication, hard work and commitment young people have to succeed in sports. This scholarship will help make the transition to the next level of education a bit easier. It is with great honor of my father, and respect for student athletes I provide the scholarship. Ruscitto BENEDICTION Father Pierre Sodini 15 Pittsburgh Chapter Our History In 1986, Dan Marino, Sr. called together a group of friends, neighbors and businessmen to speak with George Randazzo, founder of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame (NIASHF), now located in Chicago’s “Little Italy”. The national organization, founded in 1977, honors Italian-American athletes for their accomplishments. The actual Hall of Fame displays memorabilia from many of these athletes. The goal of the meeting that evening was to establish a NIASHF chapter, in the Pittsburgh area, with the theme to “honor our own”. Of course, it is no small fact that this proud father had a son, who went on to establish himself as one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks of all time. Besides honoring athletes, one of the NIASHF’s main goals is to raise money to award deserving area high school student-athletes scholarships, which will help defray the cost of books and other incidentals, during their college careers. All of the chapters hold annual banquets to help raise this money. Including tonight’s awards, the Pittsburgh chapter will have given out over $679,000 in scholarships to more than 140 area high school students, over the past 27 years. 16 P.J. DeMeo HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR P.J. DeMeo is currently a senior at Central Catholic High School. He is the son of Dr. Patrick and Anita DeMeo and has a sister Kaitlyn, a sophomore at Oakland Catholic High School. Both sets of P.J.’s grandparents, the DeMeo’s and Cicci’s, are of Italian decent whose parents immigrated to this country. A special memory of P.J.’s was to visit Italy with his family and grandparents with the privilege of meeting Pope Benedict. P.J. is especially proud of his Italian heritage and the strong family values instilled in him. P.J., a three year baseball varsity lettermen at Central, helped lead his team to the WPIAL playoffs in the past two years. He has played for the prestigious Allegheny Pirates for the past three seasons under the direction of Coach Fred Albert. Last summer, he represented Pennsylvania in the Midwest Regional All Star Classic with Coach Mark Saghy. He hit back to back homeruns against one of the nation’s top high school pitchers in helping his team to an impressive effort in Chicago. He plays summer baseball in the Western Pennsylvania Elite Baseball League for Chase Rowe and is thankful to his high school coach, Frank LaCava, for all his guidance and coaching effort. He was recognized as one of the Top 5 second baseman in the state by Prep Baseball Report. P.J. has been awarded a baseball scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh where he will play for Coach Joe Jordano and is excited to compete in the highly respected Atlantic Coast Conference. P.J. is an honors student at Central Catholic with a 4.5 Q.P.A. and is a member of The National Honor Society. He is especially grateful to his Central Catholic teachers and brothers who have instilled faith and scholarship and to Mr. “E” for his encouragement and guidance. During his freshman year his desire to share his love for baseball and his wish to help others led to the formation of “Second Base Gear”. P.J.’s service project involved collecting and refurbishing used baseball gear that was then donated to inner city youths at The Boys & Girls Club in East Liberty. More than 300 bats, gloves, and cleats were donated. “The hard work and many hours of collecting and cleaning the equipment were worth it once I saw how many kids I was able to help play baseball!” 17 Tom Nola COACH OF THE YEAR Tom Nola was born in McKeesport, PA, on December 29, 1953. He is the son of Jan and Bill Nola of North Huntington, PA. The oldest of five children, Tom attended McKeesport Area School District and lettered in varsity baseball and football. He attended Bethany College in West Virginia, where he started all four years in both baseball and football. During his senior year he was ranked nationally among college receivers. Following that, he was awarded a tryout with the New York Jets. While attending Bethany College, Tom was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He also was senior fellow of the history department. After graduating in 1975, Tom attended California University of Pennsylvania, where he became certified to teach comprehensive High School Social Studies. In 1975, Tom married Eileen, his wife of 37 years. They have two daughters, Brooke and Bethany, and four grandchildren. When he’s not coaching football, he enjoys spending time with his grandchildren and extended family. Another lifelong passion of his is softball. He plays on several leagues each summer. 18 Tom has been a head football coach for 15 years. His overall record is 148–52. He has been the head coach for Clairton High School for 11 years. His record there is 133–20. During the last seven years at Clairton, his record has been 103–5. In the last four years his Bears have won 63 consecutive games, which is the current national record, and have taken the Pennsylvania State Championship home four times in a row. John Giammarco DOMINIC ROPPA AWARD With roots planted firmly in western Pennsylvania and western Pennsylvania basketball, John Giammarco surrounded himself at an early age with the local blue bloods of high school and college basketball. And although most of those influences have moved on to other places around the country and world, he continues to exemplify his love of the game and this area through his promotion of high school basketball. It can easily be argued that no man has done more for the local high school game and its student athletes than John Giammarco. A native of McKees Rocks, John’s coaching resume speaks for itself. His 17 years on the bench afforded him the opportunity to be on the staff of six WPIAL Championship teams. After coaching stints at Cornell High School, Sto-Rox High School, and Montour High School, he knew his time on the bench was over and a new venture awaited. This is when John reached back to his roots and ran with what he learned from mentors like Sonny Vaccaro in the early years of his career. Grass Roots Basketball was born in western Pennsylvania. His initial project, and most widely attended, is the Pittsburgh Basketball Club founded in 1994. With more than 3,000 annual participants, PBC offers certified summer and fall basketball leagues to student athletes ranging from grade school to high school varsity. These leagues have become a staple of the off-season programs of nearly every local high school team. These leagues have also manifested into some of the eastern seaboard’s most prestigious in-season high school basketball events, including the PBC High School Classic and the PBC Holiday Festival. In 2006, John took his efforts to the next level, literally, by forming The Pittsburgh Pro-Am Summer League. This NCAA-certified summer league features college players and has been scouted by professional coaches from 17 different countries and leagues. Players from Pitt, WVU, Robert Morris, Duquesne, and Youngstown State have participated and taken advantage of the exposure it offers. Dozens of professionals from various leagues have also taken part in the Pro-Am. John’s most recent contribution occurred in 2009 with the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Hall of Fame. This is the only hall of fame in western Pennsylvania that honors basketball only. The Hall honors great players, coaches, administrators, and contributors to the game past and present; and it epitomizes John’s vision. It integrates all of those who share John’s passion for high school basketball and western Pennsylvania. It is a place where John’s past influences and contemporaries can join with those who carry it forward. It is where his grass roots meet the present. Ironically, to this day, John is not a member of his own Hall of Fame. 19 Frank A. Sirianni Organized Labor Man of the Year Since 2002, Frank Sirianni has been president of Pennsylvania State Building and Construction Trades Council, building it into a powerful voice for construction trades statewide. He began his career in 1987 as a journeyman glazier. His demonstrated skills led to a variety of leadership positions within the glaziers local and in the building and construction trades, including the executive council of Pennsylvania AFL-CIO and board of directors of Political Labor Action Now (PLAN). 20 He was also co-chair of Pennsylvania Helmets to Hardhats, a national, federally-funded program that connects transitioning active-duty military members and reservists with quality career training and employment opportunities within the building and construction industry. Frank is a native of State College and resides in York, PA, with his wife and family. Tom Savini FRANK A. SANTAMARIA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT As an actor, Tom appeared in three movies this year: Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Machete Kills, the sequel to Machete, which comes out this September. Tom has also been a guest judge on Faceoff, Halloween Wars, and has the number one special makeup effects school in the world at the Douglas Education Center in Pittsburgh, his home town. As a special makeup effects artist, Tom created Jason for the Friday the 13th franchise and Leatherface for Texas Chainsaw Massacre II. He has been called the “Wizard of Gore” and the “King of Splatter” for the realistic gory special makeup effects in dozens of movies, but also created unique monsters and characters for such films as Creepshow, The Prowler, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead. He did all this while living in the house in which he was born and raised right here in Bloomfield. He is an East coast guy who never saw the need to move anywhere to make his dreams come true. No matter where in the world his work takes him, he is always happy to come home to Bloomfield — Little Italy. As a director, Tom directed the remake of Night of the Living Dead, two episodes of The Chill Factor, three episodes of Tales from the Darkside, Wet Dreams for the feature Theatre Bizarre, and two separate theatrical stage productions of Dracula. 21 Jim Morasca PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE OF THE YEAR (Posthumously) A Pittsburgh native, Jimmy was born and raised in Scott Township. While attending Chartiers Valley High School, Jimmy excelled at football and boxing. Jimmy’s success as an athlete started at 11 when he was co-football champion at Our Lady of Grace grade school. In 1972, he was a member of the WPIAL co-champion Chartiers Valley High School football team and had an honorable mention for the all-WPIAL team. In the same year, Jimmy was crowned as the Diamond Belt boxing champion, 188 Division. After graduating from Chartiers Valley High School in 1973, Jimmy continued his football career at California State University, where he was a starter from 1973 -1975. When he finished his football career, Jimmy focused on his other two passions, weight lifting and sharpshooting. During 1980-1985, Jimmy won numerous Marksman awards for sharpshooting from the Pennsylvania Gun Association. In 1987, he made it to the powerlifting champion state finals. Finally, Jimmy was named the winner of the Mr. Pittsburgh Over 50 Division for bodybuilding, an award that made him very proud. 22 Jimmy had many other passions outside of athletics. He thoroughly enjoyed cooking and playing golf, especially with his brother Michael who was his golfing buddy. Jimmy unfortunately lost his battle to pancreatic cancer on February 16, 2013, at 57. He is survived by his loving family and friends including his mother Suzanne and his children, Angelo and Silvia. Bob Junko PITTSBURGH LEDEND After spending nearly four decades in the coaching ranks, Washington, PA-native Bob Junko moved to the administrative side of college football in 2007 as Pitt’s director of football relations and program enhancement. In his first stint with the Panthers, the 1982 team received a Cotton Bowl bid and finished ninth in the country. The 1983 Panthers earned a Fiesta Bowl berth and ranked 19th in the final polls. Now in his seventh year in that capacity, he assists in the daily operations of the program and also focuses on the Panthers’ extended family of football alumni. Among the standouts on those defenses were tackle Bill Maas, defensive end Chris Doleman and defensive backs Tim Lewis and Tom Flynn, all of whom went on to careers in the NFL. Doleman was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012. One of the best-known football figures in the tri-state area, Junko has been a highly valuable figure within the Pitt program. He played a major role in the Panthers’ recruiting successes over the past decade and in 2006 was named one of the nation’s top 25 recruiters by Rivals. Junko also received wide praise from the press and players alike for his work with the Panthers’ 2012 recruiting class. The 2013 season marks the 17th year of Junko’s second tour at Pittsburgh. He initially coached at Pitt from 198285, serving as defensive coordinator under head coach Foge Fazio. He returned in 1997 as defensive tackles coach under Walt Harris and was elevated to assistant head coach in 2000. As a collegian, Junko starred at Tulsa as an inside linebacker and was an Honorable Mention AllAmerican in 1967. He also was named to the AllMissouri Valley Conference team twice and served as team captain. Junko earned a bachelor’s degree in history education in 1968 and his master’s in educational administration in 1970 at Tulsa. He was inducted into the University of Tulsa Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Prior to returning to Pittsburgh, Junko was the defensive coordinator at Kent State from 1995-96. Junko also served as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator for seven years at Akron (1988-94). He additionally held similar positions at Northwestern, TCU and Tulsa, his alma mater. 23 Tony Lonero HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE A native of Penn Hills and 1977 Penn Hills High School graduate, Tony began his baseball career at age nine for the Penn Hills Cougars in their farm league. At 15 Tony was the youngest player ever to play legion baseball in Penn Hills. He played Legion baseball in the summer and high school ball in the spring. In 1977, his baseball team won the WPIAL championship his senior year. It was the first time Penn Hills won the WPIAL championship and, after an undefeated season, lost the state finals to finish second. Dardanell publications named Tony high school co-player of the year. He was twice named All Conference in high school. In 1978 and 1979 he attended Chipola Junior College in Florida on a full baseball scholarship. There he was awarded All Southern Conference Catcher in 1979. His batting average while at Chipola was .373 and .380. He helped lead the Chipola Indians to the state finals two years in the row, while maintaining a 3.2 grade point average. In 1980 and l981, Tony was awarded a full scholarship to Louisiana State University. He held the school record in doubles in 1980 with a .322 batting average and a .976 fielding average behind the plate. In 1982, Tony played professional baseball in Italy for Nettuno Indians, which are the “Yankee’s” of the Italian baseball league with 18 championships since its founding in 1948. This is where he met and married his wife Mimma. That year, Tony won the Triple Crown while hitting a .385 average, 23 homeruns and 75 RBIs while winning Rookie of the Year and the Golden Glove for catching. In the Italian Baseball League, if an American player is of Italian origin he can also play on the Italian national team. In 1982, Tony was the starting catcher for Italy at the world championships in Korea where he tied for the lead in the tournament in homeruns. The following season in 1983, he won the Golden 24 Glove for catching and finished in the top five in all the hitting categories. Playing for the Italian National team, he helped Italy win over Holland to earn a berth in the 1984 Olympics, where baseball made its first appearance. In 1984, Italy finished in fifth place at the Olympics. From 1982 to 1996, Tony won many prestigious awards in the Italian Baseball League while compiling many records, which still stand today -- hitting three homers in one game four times during his career. With Nettuno, as a player and a coach, he won five championships, two European team championships, and from 1990 to 2000 appeared in nine finals in a row winning five. After retiring from baseball, he started a successful Internet design and hosting company. In 2001, after training for a triathlon, he suddenly felt faint and fell. After several days in the hospital he received the diagnosis of MS. He sees his biggest victory to date as finishing an 80-mile bicycle race just one year after his diagnosis. It took him 18 hours to complete but when he arrived at the finish line there was nobody or nothing there, but he knew in his heart that he found a way to battle MS. “After completing my first bike ride with ms in 2002 I had something inside of me that made me want to do more, to prove to myself that I can live with MS. Learning that I can only ride a bike I began to ride in 2003 and haven’t stopped.” Each year he has completed many gruelling races, among them the famous Paris-Brest-Paris 1250km race three times. During a 1400km London-Edinburg-London race he had taped an IV with his MS treatment on the handle bars. (He finished 80th out of 600 riders.) A documentary about his third Paris-Brest-Paris race “Ride to the Finish” was produced and released in 2011, a copy of which was placed in the Flight 93 National Monument. Mark Recchi HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE Professional ice hockey right winger, Mark Recchi had an impressive 22 years in the National Hockey League, most notably for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadians and Boston Bruins. Among many other accomplishments, Recchi boasts three Stanley Cup wins. Recchi celebrated his second Stanley Cup win with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 before resigning with the Penguins for the 2007 season. He then went on to play one year with the Tampa Bay Lightning before signing a year deal with the Bruins in 2009, where he would remain until his retirement in 2011. Recchi began playing junior hockey for the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League, where his number 8 was retired after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1988. Continuing his career with the Penguins, Recchi saw his first Stanley Cup win in 1991. With the Bruins, Recchi became the 13th player in NHL history to score 1,500 points during his career. In Game Two of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals, Recchi became the oldest player to score a goal in a Stanley Cup Final at 43. On June 15, 2011, Recchi joined only nine other players in NHL history in win the Stanley Cup with three different teams, as the Bruins defeated Vancouver in Game 7. Following the win, Recchi announced his retirement from the NHL. Following his Stanley Cup win, he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers, where he played until 1995 as part of the “Crazy Eights” line with Eric Lindros and Brent Fedyk. Recchi holds the single-season point scoring record with 123 points (53 goals, 70 assists) in the 1992-1993 season with the Flyers. He was traded to the Montreal Canadians in 1995 before returning to the Flyers for the 1998-1999 season, where he was consistently one of their top scorers. Recchi saw two Eastern Conference Finals with the Flyers in 2000 and 2004, both series bowing out in seven games. 25 Louis D. Ruscitto MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD & HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE Lou Ruscitto wants to know what all the fuss is about. Awards? Honors? Recognition? Really? Really?? For merely working hard, helping people, and being friendly? “Surely you jest,” he would likely respond, no doubt embarrassingly, before apologetically excusing himself to address a problem on one of his company’s contracts. Or maybe it’s a developmental issue with one of the two industrial sites on which he presently serves as Managing Partner. Perhaps it’s neither. Empress Arabians, one of America’s most highly-regarded full service professional facilities for Arabian horses, is hosting a potential client, and Lou, as owner, naturally wants to be there to ensure that the individual is given the full red carpet treatment, even if they’re not interested in making a purchase. It’s not that he doesn’t appreciate the recognition. “Accomplishment” is merely Lou “living life.” An authentic and genuine man, he will humbly deflect the accolades that prestige wants to thrust upon him to those he eagerly acknowledges and believes are equally, if not more, worthy of such tribute. For Lou, it’s all about the team. It’s all about the family. It’s about making a new friend each and every day. To know the man, one needs to understand the impact his father had on him during Lou’s formative years. It would be otherwise remiss to omit such a description, for such importance cannot be emphasized enough. One of four children born to Gaetano (Guy) and Mary Ruscitto, Lou and his two brothers and one sister grew up in Pittsburgh, in 26 the working class neighborhood streets of Carrick. A self-made man like his own father before him (Lou’s grandfather Dominic, who settled in Bloomfield after migrating from Campobasso in the Abruzzo region of Italy), Guy worked two full-time blue collar jobs for eleven straight years to make ends meet. Yet, in spite of his time laboring in the local steel mills and construction sites, he was a loving and devoted husband and father, and imparted that most time honored tradition that Italian Americans are most proud of, that being, of course, the value of family. Eventually Guy, along with two of his sons, founded GAL Construction, named after Guy, Lou’s brother Anthony, and Lou. The two sons assumed control of the company in 1963 shortly before Guy’s passing from cancer, and struggled through difficult times and debt for the remainder of the decade. Though success for the company in those early years initially proved a difficult courtship, the brothers pressed forward, expanding GAL’s business by moving into both highway and bridge work by the late 1970s. While progressively becoming a results-oriented profit-minded generalist as the company continued to grow in the ensuing decades, Lou always kept intact his priorities regarding hard work, helping people, and being friendly. His manic resilience and unstoppable enthusiasm over these years ultimately resulted in a $5,000 investment becoming a $150 million a year construction company. It also produced opportunities for him in other arenas outside of GAL Construction. Lou is presently Managing Partner of The New Mon River Industrial Park (formerly Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Mill), a complex consisting of 896,000 square feet of warehouse and manufacturing facilities on 400 acres in Allenport, Pennsylvania. He is also the principle investor and Managing Partner of the Bushy Park Industrial Complex in Charleston, South Carolina. Bushy Park is an industrial site consisting of 2,000 acres, which offers a variety of uses. Lou’s genius extends beyond his professional career. Empress Arabians, a 75-acre training and breeding facility specializing in Arabian horses located in Venetia, Pennsylvania, emerged from Lou’s passion for this highly respected breed of animal. Applying the same homegrown principles to Empress as he has in business, the family-operated farm has claimed numerous district, national, and international championship show titles and Top Ten placements since Lou and his wife Carol stepped out from the industry’s amateur ranks and founded the venture in 1995. Lou has personally won two U.S. National Championships in Arabian Country Pleasure Driving and was recognized in 2001 as “Horse Breeder of the Year” by the Arabian Professional and Amateur Horseman’s Association. American experience in Western Pennsylvania,” writes Andrea E. Masich, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania. It is currently on display at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh. A committed outdoorsman and conservationist, a Life Member of the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, a Board Member of the Pittsburgh Film Office, and a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner, Lou naturally calls his wife Carol of 48 years his “pillar of strength.” Most importantly, most importantly, as Lou would undoubtedly emphasize, between the two of them, they have been able to bestow the Ruscitto and Italian American tradition of family, hard work, and the highest moral and ethical standards to their six children and grandchildren. They currently reside in Peters Township. Lou’s dedication and commitment to helping others succeed is not limited to business or his work with Arabian horses. This is best exemplified through The Marcus Ruscitto Charitable Foundation, established in 2006 as a legacy to Lou’s eldest son Marc who, together with his younger brother Michael, founded Stargate Industries, a regional internet service provider (Marc also served as the company’s Chief Executive Officer before his untimely passing in 2004). The Foundation supports numerous charitable groups that include The Cancer Care Center, Animal Friends, the Children’s Institute, WQED, the Manchester Craftsman’s Guild, Angel’s Place, Pittsburgh Promise, and the Homeless Children’s Education Fund, among others. It also awards annual scholarships to the Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh and, most recently, in association with The Pittsburgh Foundation, provided $50,000 in program funding to address the growing problem of bullying and cyberbullying among children and adolescents. Being selected as the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame’s 2013 “Man of the Year” is not the first time Lou has been honored for his heritage and unmitigated work ethic. He was featured in “Boundless Lives: Italian Americans of Western Pennsylvania,” a 1999 publication edited by Mary Brignano.
