SUMMER 2014
Between 3rd and 2nd you’ll find Pearl
Street West, a group of specialty shops.
Stop in and enjoy homemade ice cream,
voted locally as La Crosse’s best, and delicious homemade chocolates at The Pearl,
an authentic 1930s Ice Cream Parlor
and Con
fectionery. On the corner of
Pearl and 2nd is Satori Arts Gallery where
you will find many pieces of art, ancient
Chinese artifacts and on-site handcrafted
jewelry. Up the block you’ll find Buzzard
Billy’s, with plenty of room to relax and
watch your favorite activity. Bring the
whole family to enjoy their nice variety
of Cajun fare.
Pearl Street shopping and dining is
conveniently located just across from the
La Crosse Center and a short walk from
Riverside park. u

elcome to one of the
largest
Commercial
Historic Districts in
Wisconsin—listed on the National and
State Historic Registers. This site is a
nationally-recognized Great American
Main Street Award Recipient. If you enjoy
specialty shops, quality clothing, crafts,
galleries and good places to eat, downtown La Crosse is where you need to be!
Antique lovers should visit the Antique
Center on 3rd Street with three floors to
browse. It’s one of the largest antique
stores in our area!
Main Street is in the heart of downtown
La Crosse. Immerse yourself in history
while shopping for consignment goods of
all kinds at Treasures on Main.
Just north of City Hall, 4th Street turns
into Copeland Avenue where you will
find a variety of shops and services. Take
a break during your day of shopping to
be inspired at Psychic Readings by Gina,
located there on Copeland.
Take the family to visit the Children’s
Museum, the Swarthout Museum in the
public library, and during the summer, the
Riverside Museum in Riverside Park.
Downtown La Crosse has an excellent
selection of eating establishments. At 4th
Street & Pearl is Fayze’s, a local favorite serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Take home some of their fresh bakery
goods. Pickerman’s on Jay offers delicious
sandwiches on freshly baked bread, gourmet soups, and salads. At the Holiday
Inn, Buster’s Bar & Grill is a great gathering place. An impressive beer and wine
selection add to the experience. On Main
Street, Grounded Specialty Coffee has
superb sandwiches, wraps and salads in
addition to great beverages. For a family
restaurant, try the King Street Kitchen,
known for its friendly service and hearty
entrees. Lindy’s Subs and Salads, on Main,
has tasty subs and accompany that with
their fresh salads.
Above the People’s Food Co-op, on
Fifth, try Hackberry’s Bistro for lunch or
dinner and pick up the best fresh produce
on your way out.
Treat yourself to Piggy’s, an award winning restaurant on Front Street that specializes in hickory-smoked entrees. You’ll
have your choice of casual or fine dining.
10
SUMMER 2014
Just next door from Piggy’s you’ll find
La Crosse’s original wine bar, Wine Guyz
offering 36 wines by the glass. Their Back
Alley Deli is open for lunch at 11a.m. Mon.Sat with paninis, soup, appetizers, pizzas,
and cheese plates. Shop while you sip!
Hundreds of labels and great gifts. They
are located on King Street.
The Freight House is La Crosse’s premier steak and seafood restaurant and is a
national historic site. Enjoy their weekend
entertainment.
Along the north end of Riverside Park
you’ll find great food and spectacular service for lunch and dinner at The Waterfront
Restaurant and Tavern. What a view!
Stroll down to Riverside Park to
see “The Mighty Mississippi” and several
interesting sculptures there. It’s the site
for Riverfest, the Sand Sculpting Festival,
the riverboats, summer concerts and
during the winter, the popular Rotary
Lights display.
Take advantage of all of the scenery and
excitement that you will find in downtown
La Crosse! u

of
partnering with four
“sister cities”; Epinal, France;
Luoyang, China; Friedberg,
Germany; and Dubna, Russia.
The Riverside International
Friendship Gardens were
developed to celebrate
those relationships and educate the public about plant life that can be found in these countries. The Gardens are
located on the north side of Riverside Park in La Crosse’s Downtown area. Representative
plantings from more nations are in the works, so watch for future additions! u

hile you are in the
area, visit La Crosse’s
Northside,
located
south of Onalaska and north of Downtown
La Crosse. There are many shopping
areas including Old Towne North where
family-owned specialty shops line
Caledonia Street with that “olde worlde”
atmosphere.
For antique lovers, Caledonia Street
Antiques, LLP is a must-see shop with
6000 feet of displays and many dealers.
For a truly fun and unique La Crosse
experience, sample locally crafted beers
at The Pearl Street Brewery, just off of
Lang Drive. Their popular brews such
as Downtown Brown Ale, a gold medal
winner, can also be found at many area
establishments.
Spend the day experiencing all of
the well-established businesses on
La Crosse’s northside. u

La Crosse’s Steam Locomotive, Caboose &
Grand Crossing Tower
Copeland Park, on La Crosse’s Northside, is home to the historic steam locomotive,
the #4000, Milwaukee Road Caboose #0359, and the Grand Crossing Tower rail switching tower. The locomotive, built in 1930, ran on coal and water and was one of the
largest of its type. The crossing tower was used to prevent trains from meeting one
another. Volunteers host “Rail Fair” each July with tours and a flea market to fund preservation of this historic railroad display. u

Wisconsin State Highway 35 from
Prescott south through Onalaska
and La Crosse to Prairie du Chien and
then follows all weather county roads to
Cassville. From Cassville, Hwy. 133 meets
US 61 at Tenneyson and carries the Great

for the Great River Road signs marking
the route.
Much of Wisconsin’s Great River
Road is etched at the base of bluffs and
adjacent to the river. It passes through
many communities such as Onalaska,
Holmen and Trempealeau. The road
curves winding with the river, a drive to
enjoy. The 30 mile stretch between Alma
and Maiden Rock and 60 miles between
La Crosse and Prairie du Chien is considered to be one of the most scenic routes
in America. Many waysides and overlooks provide an opportunity to stop,
rest and photograph the river scenery.

LA CROSSE’S NORTHSIDE
N
orth La Crosse has a history that is in some significant ways different from
that of downtown La Crosse. For both areas, geography has played a large
role in the historical development of the commercial and residential districts.
North La Crosse is separated from the southern part of the city by the La Crosse River
and extensive wetlands area known as the La Crosse River Marsh. From its earliest
days, the base industry in North La Crosse was lumber milling. Also, steamboats had a
difficult time advancing upriver on the Black River, so North La Crosse did not develop
as a shipping/commercial center. Norwegians became the dominant ethnic group and
established a working class flavor to the community.
With the coming of the railroad in the late 1850s, North La Crosse became the site
of much rail industry activity. The railroad jobs and later employment opportunities in
industry and manufacturing perpetuated a “blue collar” tradition in the commercial
and residential areas.
North La Crosse’s architecture reflects the unique history of the north side. The
industrial buildings are associated with the railroads and with other early 20th century
industries that developed after the lumber era. Several churches were founded by
ethnic groups specifically associated with North La Crosse. The core commercial district
along Caledonia Street has very few high-style buildings and many of the vernacular
19th and 20th century facades have been greatly altered. However, “Old Towne North”
still retains a distinctive commercial flavor attractive to heritage tourists.

CASHTON, WI
T
ake a day trip to the Cashton area.
From its beautiful scenery to its attractions your day will be filled with treasures for your senses.
The Cashton area, just 15 minutes south
of interstate 90 at Sparta, is home to the
state of Wisconsin’s largest Amish community.
Approximately 300 Old Order Amish families
make their home in the Cashton settlement.
Known for their quality hand crafted furniture,
quilts, rugs, baskets and other products there is
sure to be something for everyone.
Some of the things that will make a fun
day trip to the Cashton area are a stop at The
Village shops at Down A Country Road, where
you will find 6 unique gift shops, which were
built by the Amish and feature products made
by them as well as other local Artisans and
some very unique general giftware. The gift
shops are set in a village like setting, connected with a brick pathway amongst gorgeous
gardens. You will find The Amish Shop, Emma’s
Kitchen, Memories from Amish Country, The
Little Red Shed, Not So Plain & Simple and the
Country Corner Ice Cream Shop located on the
farm of Chuck and Kathy Kuderer just 2 miles
east of Cashton. Kathy also provides tours of
the Amish community so if you have curiosity
about the Amish way of life, you may want to
make a reservation for a tour.
You will want to visit the Old Country
Cheese Factory on Co. D which is owned by
the Amish, although they do not operate it.
You will find many varieties of fresh made
cheeses, aged cheeses and of course cheese
curds! Watch thru the viewing window as the
cheese is made.
Another stop just south of Cashton along
Hwy 27 is the Pasture Pride Cheese Store. Filled
with delightful cheese made from the milk
provided by the Amish, as well as giftware it is
a stop you don’t want to miss.
If it’s flowers or produce you are looking
for… the Cashton area is abundant with green
houses at the Amish farms, or a visit to the
Growers Produce Auction is a fun event to take
in and held two or three times a week from
April thru October.
From what you have just heard… I think it
will have to be more than a day trip. Come on
back to Cashton as many times as you would
like. We welcome you to come explore with us.

T
he Great River State Trail is a
24-mile trail that starts in
Onalaska and continues to the
Marshland Access in the Trempealeau
National Wildlife Refuge nine miles north
of Trempealeau. There are 18 bridges
crossing several waterways, including
the Black River, Shingle Creek, Tank Creek
and Halfway Creek.
The trail traverses a mixture of prairie and bottom lands. You can also see
a variety of wildlife such as waterfowl,
great blue herons and egrets. Deer, squirrels, fox, and raccoons are habitants of
the trail.
During the Great Ice Age,
glaciers flowed around the Coulee Region
creating what is called a driftless area
which provided the unique scenery.
Many railroads traveled this path to
bring needed goods in the “olden days.”
The glory of the railroads still lives on.
Occasionally the sights and sounds can
be relived when the active Burlington
Northern Santa Fe Railroad passes
alongside the trail.
The La Crosse River Trail connects to
the Great River State Trail in Onalaska
and heads east following the La Crosse
River to Sparta. This adds 21-1/2 miles of
biking and hiking fun before linking up
with Elroy-Sparta trail.
Whatever the season, enjoy the
view on the The Great River State Trail.

Turkey vultures
Like wild turkeys, turkey vultures
have bald, red heads. Turkey
vultures eat mostly dead flesh, and
stick their heads into carcasses to
get the meat. A bald head is easier
to clean after meals. These large
birds are often seen soaring with
V-shaped wings tipping, clumsily,
from side to side.
Red-tailed hawks
Whether perched on a branch
or soaring through the sky,
the broad reddish-brown
tail of the red-tailed hawk
distinguishes it from other
hawks. Even if you do not see
the red-tailed hawk, you may
hear its high-pitched screech.

trees grow along
the trail. Northern
red oaks have leaves

In autumn, northern red oak leaves turn a

or brown. The gnarly silhouette of the bur
oak is easy to identify year round.

inona is nestled between the covered limestone river bluffs that rise 500 feet
and the stunning mighty Mississippi River.
The historic architecture and cultural opportunities give Winona a soul
that is living, breathing and growing. Still, Winona and its wealth of culture, arts, history,
recreation and festivals, is relatively undiscovered.
Winona was founded in 1851 by a steamboat captain. Positioned on a large island
in the Mississippi, the lumber industry helped it grow quickly and by 1900 Winona had
more millionaires per capita than any place in the United States. Winona’s history lives on
in architecturally significant historic buildings and vintage homes that thrill history buffs.
Today, Winona is driven by a strong entrepreneurial spirit that has given birth to a
city that has built its future by embracing its past. There is a strong arts movement,
abundant shopping, comfortable lodging and a variety of restaurants.
In many ways Winona is still an island in the wilderness waiting to be discovered
again. All of this is waiting for you. Make your plans today to discover Winona, the historic island city on the Mississippi. u

P
ettibone Park was originally part
of the state of Minnesota. In
1857, Alzono Barron filed plans
with Houston County for “Island City”, an
attractive well plotted out city, but these
plans never developed. Buffalo Bill Cody
also owned land on Barron Island during
the late 1800’s. And about the same
time, “White Beaver” Powell bought four
acres on the island, reviving the dream
of “Island City”, but nothing developed
(1885).
All the land on Barron Island was
acquired by A.W. Pettibone for $62,000
in 1901. In July of the same year, Mr.
Pettibone deeded Barron Island to the
Pettibone Park commission for $1.00 to
oversee that this land would be used as
a public park for the citizens of La Crosse.
Along with the land, Mr. Pettibone set up
a $50,000 trust fund to be used for the
upkeep and park development.
In 1902, Mr. Pettibone appointed a
committee to draw up papers to have
Barron Island deeded to Wisconsin from
Minnesota. One year later, 1903, a gazebo pavilion made of native Minnesota
sandstone was constructed by Mr.
Pettibone.
In 1904, the bathhouse was constructed through the efforts of G.A. Keller,
at a cost of $1,200. Finally, after 16 years
(1918) an act of Congress transferred the
land to the state of Wisconsin. An island
in Buffalo County, Wisconsin was traded
to Minnesota for Barron Island. Just one
year later, 1919, the land was annexed
by the City of La Crosse. Although, the
beach makes it well known there are
many other amenities there including
shelters, volleyball, trails, a disc golf area,
fishing, and plenty of open space. u

est Salem is located in west central Wisconsin along Interstate 90, 12 miles
east of La Crosse, approximately 165 miles from Minneapolis, Minnesota and
280 miles from Chicago, Illinois.
West Salem is rich in history. Founded by Thomas Leonard in 1851, the village is
the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hamlin Garland. Historic points of interest
include two octagon homes, Thomas Leonard’s colonial-style home (Historic Salem),
and the Hamlin Garland Homestead.
The surrounding Coulee Region’s bluffs and valleys provide for some of the
most scenic areas you will find in western Wisconsin, known as “God’s Country.” The
nearby La Crosse River meanders through forests and farmlands winding its way to the
“Mighty Mississippi.”
These scenic areas set the stage for exceptional opportunities for recreation, including boating and fishing on Lake Neshonoc, camping and picnicking at Veterans’
Memorial Park, biking and hiking on the La Crosse River State Trail and much more...

Onalaska A Brief History
G
reat glaciers of the Ice Age bypassed Onalaska, forming the “driftless region”
which left the majestic scenery and topography of Onalaska. The steep rocky
bluffs, winding valleys, fertile river bottom and great Mississippi River Basin
made the Onalaska area appealing for habitation. As early as 8,000 BC, Native Americans
lived in small mobile family groups in the Onalaska area. Later, the Oneota culture was
noted for their farming methods, as well as using the area for fishing, and hunting.
Onalaska was originally founded by Thomas G. Rowe from New York, who came here in
1851. It soon became a flourishing lumber town. The name “Onalaska” came from the
poem, “The Pleasures of Hope,” by Thomas Campbell, published in 1799. Rowe liked the
line, “The wolf’s long howl from Oonalaska’s shore,” and decided to use the name, only
with one “o”. Onalaska is built on a ridge overlooking Lake Onalaska and the Black River,
the Mississippi River and the Minnesota bluffs three miles away. u

a Crosse, Wisconsin…gently
nestled amidst bluffs and coulees, and located on the banks of
the mighty Mississippi River, escaped
the great glacier of the Ice Age and
left breathtaking panoramas, virtually
unchanged from the beginning of time.
Traders, in the late 1700s, observed
Indians playing a game on the wide
prairies, located between the Mississippi
River and the high bluffs, and named the
area “Prairie La Crosse.” The game being
played utilized a ball and long handled
racquets with a curve at the top which
made them look like a Bishop’s crosier, or
crosse (in French).
Buffalo Bill Cody was not only a frequent visitor to the area but also owned
property with a good friend of his, Dr.
Frank Powell, or White Beaver…a man
who was a local physician, medicine man
to the Winnebago-Sioux, and mayor
of La Crosse four times. Together the
men entered into many ventures and
patented medical remedies. Cody
brought his famous Wild West Show to
the area more than once as well.
The Mississippi River helped in the
growth of the small town situated on its
banks. Steamboats, barges and the like
transported goods up and down the river
and helped La Crosse become known
as the “Gateway City,” a focal point for
both amphibious and land oriented
trade. On March 14, 1856, the village of
La Crosse became the city of La Crosse.
The advent of breweries was an
economic boom to the city as well. Many
industries prospered here in the early
years of settlement (around 1841) which
La Crosse Players Sculpture
included logging and agriculture. But
it was the breweries which remained
after the lumber industry began to lose
its hold. Among the early breweries
were the Gund, Monitor, Bartl, Michel
and Heileman.
– Written by Charlotte Fox
Currently, La Crosse has two breweries
in operation, the Pearl Street Brewery and
the City Brewery. Look for their great beers
and malted products at many area establishments.

TOUR BOATS AT
RIVERSIDE PARK, LA CROSSE
L
a Crosse is the home of an early
1900s era riverboat and two up-todate eco excursion tour boats.
These boats offer two exciting and vastly
different river adventures.
The La Crosse Queen is a modern day
replica of the grand riverboats which
used to regularly ply the Mississippi. In
keeping with early traditions, she was
built with sternwheels, which are her
only means of propulsion an makes her
a “true” paddlewheeler. Some of their
cruises will even go through the lock and
dam just north of La Crosse
The Mississippi Explorer is an eco tour
boat that can cruise the backwaters of
the river to see an abundance of area
wildlife. One Explorer boat is docked at
Riverside Park and a second boat is located on the Black River at the Best Western
Hotel on La Crosse’s northside.
Great memories of the Mississippi
River can be made aboard these fine tour
boats. u
