The Mercy of God’s Silence (Part 6)
“The great patristic tradition teaches us that the
mysteries of Christ all involve silence.” (Pope
Benedict XVI)
We know nothing about the early life of Jesus from
the time of the flight to Egypt to the time in which
we find ourselves, with His Blessed Mother and St.
Joseph in the Temple, astounded that He was
conversing with the Teachers in the Temple:
“Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the
feast of Passover, and when he was twelve years
old, they went up according to festival custom.
After they had completed its days, as they were
returning, the boy Jesus remained behind in
Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it.
Thinking that he was in the caravan, they
journeyed for a day and looked for him among
their relatives and acquaintances, but not finding
him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
After three days they found him in the temple,
sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to
them and asking them questions, and all who
heard him were astounded at his understanding
and his answers. When his parents saw him, they
were astonished, and his mother said to him,
"Son, why have you done this to us? Your father
and I have been looking for you with great
anxiety."
And he said to them, "Why were you looking for
me? Did you not know that I must be in my
Father's house?" But they did not understand
what he said to them. He went down with them
and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to
them; and his mother kept all these things in her
heart. And Jesus advanced (in) wisdom and age
and favor before God and man.” (Luke 2:41-52)
From this hour onward, the Holy Family lived in
obscurity and silence. No records or traditions have
been passed down to us to let us know about their
lives over the next eighteen years. No writings, no
observations are known to exist about this time in the
life of Jesus. This is known as the “hidden life” of
the Lord.
If we meditate on this truth, we can draw some
conclusions. God’s silence, and the hidden life of
God on earth, do not indicate that nothing was
happening. God was obviously working in history, as
we are told by Saint Luke that Jesus “advanced (in)
wisdom and age and favor before God and man.”
The hand of the God of history, the life of “The
Redeemer of Man, Jesus Christ” who is “the center of
the universe and of history” (Pope St. John Paul II,
Redemptor Hominis) is still active, still moving
toward that redemption for which Christ took on a
human body and lived and worked and grew in the
quiet life of obscurity.
The actual presence of God among us, Emmanuel,
was not made known in thunder and lightning, or
earthquake and fire. It was not shouted from the
rooftops nor greeted with trumpets. The silence of
God was and is a holy thing. It does not mean that
God is absent or that He is unaware. It simply
indicates that He is working continually. As Jesus
grew and as He learned His trade, as He learned his
religion in the household of faith from Mary and
Joseph, as He learned what is meant to be righteous
and holy, to be obedient to God and to those
responsible for Him, He was preparing for the day
when He would set out to accomplish the task that
had been set for Him from the beginning: the
salvation of the world!

Readings for the Week of May 22, 2016
Sunday:
He will glorify me, because he will take from what is
mine and declare it to you. Everything that the
Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he
will take from what is mine and declare it to you."Jn 16:14-15
The Most Holy Trinity
"The Spirit of truth... will take from what is mine and
declare it to you." Jesus says in today's Gospel that the
Spirit declares something to US. We actually have a
kind of share in the blessed life of the Trinity through
this spiritual declaration. In particular, God gives us
the gift of his truth. Traditionally, we say that God-the Blessed Trinity--is the source of all truth, beauty,
and goodness. Today's reading reminds us that truth
exists, that it comes from God, and that we can know
it, hear it, and live according to it. "But when he
comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all
truth."
This is so important to remember in today's cultural
climate. These days, the very idea of truth is a touchy
subject. Because there is so much focus on tolerance
and not offending anyone, we tend to shy away from
discussions about "absolute" truth. Instead, we hear a
lot of talk about "what's true for me" or "what's true
for you." Too often we get confused about how to
respect others' differing beliefs while still maintaining
our own. Instead of embracing the fact that there is
real truth--like, for example, the truth that God
became man and was born of Mary--it is more popular
to refer to "beliefs" and "traditions" and "practices,"
emphasizing that these things differ among people.
Yes, those things differ. But truth does not change.
Either Jesus is God, or he isn't. Either his claims were
true or they weren't. It's not a matter of personal
opinion.
The Holy Spirit helps to convince us of what is really
right. But we needn't fear that this will lead us to be
intolerant. It is this same Spirit within us that brings
the fruits of love, peace, patience, kindness, and
generosity.

Why don't Catholics add the "For yours is
the Kingdom..." prayer at the end of the
Our Father like the Protestants do?
Where did it come from?
The conclusion of the Lord's Prayer that you refer to
is called a doxology, which is a prayer of glory and
praise. This particular doxology we do use in the
Mass. After the Our Father, the priest prays the
prayer that begins, "Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from
every evil..." and the people respond with the
doxology. The doxology is not found in the Bible, in
either Matthew 6:9-13 or Luke 11: 2-4, but it is very
ancient. It was first found in "The Didache," also
called "The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles,"
which dates probably from about the year AD 90. It
was a letter of instruction to early converts to
Christianity. Protestantism dates only to the
sixteenth century, so the doxology is actually a
Catholic prayer. Some scholars and the catechism (§
2760) indicate that the doxology was connected to
the celebration of the Eucharist and was not used
apart from it.
Remember, both the Lord's Prayer and the Eucharist
were part of the "mysteries of faith," things taught
only to believers. Ironically, a remnant of a prayer
used during the celebration of the Eucharist has
comes to be used widely by many Christian
churches that do not celebrate the Eucharist! Truth is
indeed stranger than fiction!
