Coil beads

worth while learning how to make them as they bring a
lovely 3-D effect to your jewelry. This project is versatile
enough to make it your own by varying the size of the
mandrels and wires, the wire colors and the lengths and
number of coils. The wire gauges given here are only a
guide and I hope you will try many different permutations.
2. Cut and straighten a 6”/15cm piece
of 22 gauge/0.6mm wire. Mark 2”/5cm
from both ends. Make a U shape in the
middle using only your hands and the
natural curve of the wire. Slide your coil
up to the mark so it is centered on the
wire. Place on the knitting needle.
3. This part is a little tricky and a light
touch is required. Use both hands to
wrap the coil in opposite directions
holding only the bare copper wire and
not the coil. You will find that the coils
spread evenly all by themselves. If you
find the knitting needle is not staying in
place, wedge it between books (or even
between your knees!)
TIP
$21.95
Available April 2012
4. After the first coil is made, you’ll
find the going gets much easier. Wrap
each end in turn until you reach the
copper wire. Make 3 tight wraps with
the wire and cut. Make 11 more. Make
11 coil link beads. Make 1 dangle using
3 ½”/9cm of wire with a spiral and an
8mm bead at one end.
You have 3 wires to play with so you can make an infinity of
different looks by varying the combinations of colors, gauges,
materials and mandrel sizes.
The three parts of
any coil bead
1. Cut 40”/1m of 26 gauge/0.4mm wire
(or work from the spool). Leaving a small
tail, make 2 or 3 anticlockwise coils to
anchor the wire. Coil the remainder of
the wire tightly clockwise. You will find
it easier to coil close to the end of the
knitting needle then pushing your work
up as you need to. Make sure you avoid
the tapered end of the needle and tighten
your coils together regularly. Make a
2”/5cm coil. Remove from the knitting
needle and cut the wires neatly.
5. To make the loop part of the toggle
clasp, cut 4”/10cm of 18 gauge/1mm
wire. Thread a 12mm GB, bend the wire
and make a loop. Thread an 8mm bead
up to the loop. Bend the wire at a right
angle.
6. Place the bead on top of the widest
part of a Sharpie pen and make a loop
round the pen. Wrap once under the
bead bringing the wire to the front.
Remove from the pen and hammer
both loops flat. Make a spiral with the
end of the wire and place centrally
under the bead.
7. To make the toggle, cut a 3 ½”/9cm
piece of 18 gauge/1mm wire. Thread a
12mm GB, bend the wire and make a
loop. Using the tip of your roundnose
pliers, bend the wire at a right angle under
the loop. Measure and mark ½”/13mm.
Place the tip of your roundnose pliers on
the mark and make a hair pin bend.

The Absolute Beginners Guide
The coil: usually the thinnest
wire which is wrapped around
a mandrel (you can use sewing
needles, larger wire gauges, nails,
knitting needles, etc.. as mandrels
depending on the effect you want
to achieve)
The inner core: this is the wire
you slip inside the finished coil to
stabilize it. It must not be too thick
or too hard as you have to work
it without tools. Always cut more
than you think you need as your
coil will stretch in size. The inner
core is also wrapped round a
mandrel and secured at both ends.
The mandrel can be a different size
from that used to make the coil.
The core wire: This last wire is put
through the coiled bead which is
now treated like any normal bead
for the purpose of attaching it to
other components.

the two 1.5mms; pick up a 2mm,
skip the 2mm, go through the 3mm,
repeat from *, and pick up a 2mm.
You have completed a row, consisting of a pass back and forth.
2
[Fig 2, red thread] Now you
need to turn and make the
third pass, but the last 2mm you
picked up has nothing to attach to.
You will have to make a turn into
the work to get in position. Go into
the very first 2mm, the 3mm and
the 2mm you first picked up, turn,
and go through the other 2mm, the
same 3mm, and the same 2mm.
You are exiting the first 2mm you
picked up, and this puts you in position to go into the 2mm that will
begin the third pass.
If you have even a little Goth in you, this is your bracelet. It’s bold, dark,
and has a geometric metallic pattern. I like this version – gray, black, and
silver. For a brighter look, try the blue-brown matte 2mm with metallic
dark blue 1.5mms and light gold metallic 3mms.
For a subtle look, choose colors close together, such as this bronze
combination; because some of the beads are bronze-lined, the play of light
brings out differing patterns. But you can go still further and turn this into
a multicolor fantasy by using a variety of 3mm bead colors on a background of white or neutral.
4
[Fig 3, red thread] Pick up a 2mm, skip the 2mm,
and go through the 3mm; pick up a 2mm, skip the
2mm, and go through the two 1.5mms. Repeat twice.
You are at the end of a pass and need to turn, but
again you must attach the end 2mm to something.
Because there are an uneven number of beads across,
you will have to do this throughout the piece, but
only along this side. Catch the thread under the two
threads that run between the two previous 2mm along
the outside edge, and pull the new 2mm up against
the previous one. Turn, and go back into the new
2mm. You will be able to continue the pass as in steps
2 and 3.

Fresh Look
I love the possibilities of the stacked components in these designs. When I used clear CZs
as the central elements, the resulting jewelry had a bright, sparkling clarity and looked
polished and formal. For the fresh look variation, I decided to frame a single component
and make it a centerpiece. I started with a CZ in a darker color, and I chose a gunmetal ring
as a frame because of the contrast in the shape as well as the color of the metal. I also used
a ribbon with variegated charcoal tones which reflects the color of the ring, and also gives it
a casual yet elegant look.

I decided to launch my own personal color-mixing challenge. I’m very fond of
Paloma Antigua’s distressed metal charms so I chose mint as my main color. Then I
consulted a color wheel to help me choose the other three.

Ring in the New Year with this kinetic sparkler

crystals, practice your wrapped loops, and just get more movement into your day.
Making this quick and easy ring lets you check all three off your list. Your reward for
this industriousness? A ring that captures the light — as well as the oohs and ahhs —
when the crystals sway with every movement of your hand.
