VISION STATEMENT
WE, the parish of Our Lady of Victory, proclaim with joy the presence of Jesus in the world through
Word, Sacrament, and deed. It is through our discipleship that we recognize our connection to God,
our neighbor, and our deepest spiritual selves.
WE, seek to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ by:
+ Welcoming all with kindness, compassion and hospitality. + Nourishing the faith life of the
community through prayer, fellowship and education. + Reverencing the dignity of each person by
celebrating the beauty of life from conception to natural death. + Nurturing the gifts of all so that
each person may live out his or her unique and personal call from God. + Caring for the needs of
the less fortunate by empowering our parish community to answer that call.
WE, do this in the name of Jesus Christ and the mandate:
“See those Christians how they love one another!”

Dear Parishioners,
Let me tell you about four different ways that
the Youth of OLV have been actively engaged in
parish activities during the summer:
Steubenville NYC 2015 Conference
Thirteen members of the OLV Youth Ministry will
be attending the Steubenville NYC 2015 Youth
Conference at St. John’s University this weekend.
Our Youth Minister, Mike Foley and our Parish
Outreach Coordinator, Maureen Russell will be
accompanying them. The conference has the goal
of strengthening and inspiring teens and youth
groups in their collective journeys to Christ. Part of
the New Evangelism, the conference offers an introduction to the Gospel message for younger teens
as well as deep and moving experiences of prayer
and fellowship for older teens. It is a weekend of
engaging liturgies, inspiring music, challenging
talks and overwhelming joy!
The Conference website describes themselves
this way: “One of St. Augustine’s most famous
quotes is ‘Our hearts are restless until they rest in
you, O Lord.’ These words often describe the spiritual angst that teenagers experience throughout
their high school years. Every teen has the desire to
achieve something great and to be someone great.
We see this desire played out on social media daily. At a Steubenville Conference, teens will learn
what it takes to be great in this life. Teens will
come to experience a relationship with Christ that
can radically transform everything in their life. The
goal of every Steubenville Conference is for teens
to open their hearts to Jesus Christ who desires
their lives to be fulfilling, exciting, and joyful!”
Please include our young people in your prayers
this weekend, as I will pray that they return excited
and energized to share their faith with their friends
and peers.
Youth Ministry Holy Hour
On the Fifth Friday of the month of July, the
Youth Ministry hosted a barbecue and holy hour.
Special thanks to the Dads who prepared the barbecue, to Anthony Muhs who provided the meditative
music, and to Therese Russell who spoke beautifully on “Why I Believe” - sharing her love for God
and the gift of the Eucharist. It was an inspiring
evening! The next Youth Ministry Holy Hour will
be on the next Fifth Friday, which is October 30th.
Cardboard Box Players
I want to thank Mary DeBorger and everyone
who assisted her with the Cardboard Box Players’
performances of Beauty and the Beast, Jr. The
younger children had their performances in July,
and the older children had their performances this
past Thursday to Saturday. We have many talented
young people in our community – it was great to
see their gifts on display during the shows!
Vacation Bible School
I want to thank Michelle DeBorger Wahlig,
Carol Timlin, and all the youth volunteers who participated in the two sessions of Vacation Bible
School. I was able to attend the closing ceremonies
of the second session and witness the wonderful
spirit that was shared by all!
Feast of the Assumption of the BVM
This Saturday, August 15th is the Feast of the
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This year,
because it falls on a Saturday, it is not a holy day of
obligation. However, I have added a 12 noon on
the feast day to accommodate people who would
like to attend Mass in recognition of Mary’s Assumption. So the two Masses for the feast will be at
8:30 am and 12 noon on next Saturday, Aug. 15th.
Thank you!
I want to thank you for your generous support
of everything that takes place around OLV! Your
constant support of the food pantry, the Sunday
collections, the special collections - for example
last Sunday’s collection for Persecuted Christians,
and the Catholic Ministries Appeal are greatly appreciated. We are $18,000 short of our goal - I’m
confident that we will be able to reach that goal.
Condolences to Jean Brophy & Family
I would like to extend condolences to Jean Brophy and her family, on behalf of the parish community of OLV, upon the death of her husband, Dan.
Jean provides the inspiring music at our 5:15 pm
Sunday evening Mass and has been an active parishioner whose voice and musical talent have enhanced our liturgies for many years. May your faith
sustain you through these difficult days.
Praised be the name of Jesus Christ
now and forever!

Outreach Program
From the desk of MaureenF..
Thank you for all the donations that so many of you
have sent in for our food pantry. We have had a
steady flow and we also appreciate the donations we
have received from the Cardboard Box campers,
thank you all!
As we come closer to the end of summer many will
begin to do school shopping. Some families that
come to our pantry have school age children. We
would like to collect school supplies from our generous parish. We will be collecting: pencils, pens,
notebooks, rulers, binders, index cards, magic markers, glue sticks, crayons. You can leave supplies in
the Food Pantry box in the vestibule or drop them off
at the parish center Mon-Thurs11am-1pm.
“It’s the duty of everyone to defend religious
freedom and promote it for all people.”
Pope Francis
Thank you,

Court Rules Government Decides What Nuns
Believe:
The Federal appeals court ruled on July 14, 2015,
that the Little Sisters of the Poor must obey the
federal mandate which requires employers to
offer health insurance plans covering contraception, sterilization and some drugs that cause abortions.
Lead attorney, Mark Rienzi of the Becket Fund for
Religious Liberty, who is representing the Little
Sisters of the Poor saysF”The government is
willing to exempt big companies like Exxon, Chevron, and Pepsi Bottling, but it won’t leave the Little
Sisters alone. The Sisters consider it immoral to
help the government distribute these drugs. But
instead of simply exempting them, the government
insists that it can take over their ministry’s employee healthcare to distribute these drugs to their
employees, while dismissing the Sisters’ moral
objections as irrelevant. In America, judges and
government bureaucrats have no authority to tell
The Little Sisters what is moral or immoral. And
the government can distribute its drugs without
nuns—it has its own healthcare exchanges that
can provide whatever it wants.”
“As Little Sisters of the Poor we dedicate our lives
to serving the neediest in society, with love and
dignity. We perform this loving ministry because of
our faith and simply cannot choose between our
care for the elderly poor and our faith, and we
shouldn’t have to.”
Sr. Loraine Marie Maguire, Mother Provincial of the
Little Sisters of the Poor
