Our first grandchild was on the way and we rushed off to Middelburg to be there in time for the birth. After motnhs of waiting in anticipation while Marilee’s pregnancy progressed, it was finally here. When I saw our son Benna through the window of the babyroom holding that very small baby girl in his arms, tears just started rolling. Later on when I was allowed to hold that little blessing in my arms for the first time, words cannot described the feeling. It stirred up old forgotten memories and emotions of motherhood. That made me go on a memory lane in my mind. Birth … and death. Normally when a baby is born, there is joy, tears of happiness and wonder. However, when someone dies, there are tears of heartbreak and feelings of loss and despair. I think we should be filled with joy when someone dies. Why you will probably think? Has she gone mad? No, I just think that if the person that died knew their destiny, if they knew Thank you Makoya Beds Sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being. Getting enough quality sleep at the right time can help protect your mental health, physical health and quality of life. When you go to sleep, your body starts to work. How effective the sleep will influence how well you think, react, work, learn, and get along with others, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (www.nhibi.nih.gov) Upon instruction of the orthopaedic surgeon before my spinal operation, I had to find the right bed for my recovering period. After the operation you cannot sit for a few weeks, you need to stand or lie down, and a firm bed that is comfortable is imperative for your recovery. Makoya Beds, the local Graskop bed manufacturer understood exactly what I needed and build a quality customized bed on short notice for me. Not only did they deliver it on time in Whiteriver, it was at an affordable price, and the quality excellent. To Lize and the Makoya Bed team of Graskop, thank you for great customer service. I would gladly refer any potential customers to you because you offer great service and your prices are unbeatable, Supporting Makoya Beds was a great experience. - Denise van Wyk Christ and knew that death is not the final chapter, we should rejoice. Actually it is just the first step to eternal life. We can cry because we will miss them, but should not because they died. In the state that our country (and the whole world) is in now, I heard someone saying the other day that it is madness to have a baby under these circumstances. Thank goodness that only God can create life and if a baby is born, it is His will. We don’t know the future. We as parents (and grandparent) have to teach the young about respect and honour. Seeing and witnessing the chaos in and around South Africa, we must not lose hope. Instead of speaking negative, can we not join hands and pray together and show others that by the grace of God and our inherent goodness, we can be the difference in this world. I am in no way denying that there are problems, but how we react to it makes the difference. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. A Breath of fresh air... In this day and age, when there is very little trust left, then it is truly a breath of fresh air when you take your vehicle to Nick Theunissen and his family run business, NHT Motor and Diesel Service in Old Lydenburg Road, Sabie. He then proceeded to hand me a “Goody Bag” full of an assortment of items. Pilgrims Rest competes in the big league Kopano Dibakwane Pilgrims Rest is famous for its gold producing history and also for its picturesque landscape. This time around, the small town has produced a precious gem in the form of Phiona Khoza who is one of the finalists for the Miss Jozi 2016 beauty pageant. Khoza shared with GPS News her experiences of starting out in a small town as a budding model to competing in Miss Jozi 2016. She is not only blessed with good looks, but also highly intelligent and focused on becoming a beacon of hope to the hopeless. Her journey in the glamorous world of beauty pageants yielded nine titles within a month in 2013 which include, Miss Summer, Miss Graskop, Miss Festive and Miss Confidence. Khoza/ was also appointed as the new ambassador of Jean’s Prestigious Models. She recently moved to Johannesburg to explore new opportunities such as entering the Miss Jozi 2016 pageant. “The auditions were held at New Gate Shopping Centre in Johannesburg,” said Khoza. “Five hundred people entered the pageant and I made it to the top one hundred. I’m currently running for the top thirty. I competed against other beautiful girls but I guess I presented myself well. Daar is altyd baie vroue by my konserte en ook ‘n hele paar mans omdat hulle weet hulle gaan baie punte kry as hulle saamgaan. Dit is lekker om hulle gelukkig te maak.” Volgens Patrizio wat al sing vir 25 jaar, het hy die spesifieke naam vir die nuwe album gekies omdat dit sy lewensuitkyk vasvang. “La Dolce Vita beteken ‘to live the sweet life’. Dìs my lewe,” vertel Patrizio. “En nee, daarmee sê ek nie my lewe is perfek nie. It was a humbling experience. It’s not easy to be a pageant queen especially if you come from a small town. I’ve learnt in this pageant that tattoos and piercings are not allowed. You must have morals, dignity, pride and compassion. You also have to put people first, be selfless and have an invisible custommade crown. I believe in Christ and that kids must not limit themselves. The sky is not the limit because there are foot prints on the moon.” Readers can vote for Khoza by typing Miss Jozi Phiona to 33282. The voting line closes on June 30. More votes give her a better chance to proceed to the next stage of the competition leading to the gala event to be held in August. The lucky queen of the competition will walk away with prizes such as R10 000 cash prize and a one year gym contract. Daar is baie hartseer goed wat rondom ons gebeur, maar ek glo dat ‘n mens ‘n positiewe lewensuitkyk moet hê.” “Daar is baie positiewe, goeie energie in die liedjies en ek glo dat dit mense gelukkig sal maak as hulle daarna luister want dit maak my gelukkig om dit te sing. Vir my aanhangers gaan dit gewis ‘n grote wees. En vir die wat my nog nie ken nie, die perfekte geleentheid om my musiek te leer ken.” Hy sal ook op 29 en 30 Julie by Classics is Groot in Pretoria te sien wees waar hy saam met kunstenaars soos Jannie Moolman en Corela Botha optree. The topics in the book are; poor infrastructure, lack of support from external forces likes parents and underqualified workforce. The book is not sold and it’s stationed at the Sabie Circuit in Graskop. I aim to place it at the Sabie Library for people to read and use it as a reference.” “We are no longer improving and we need to use new methods,” continued Mokoena. “I’ve learnt that Stopping illegal deductions Lianda Naudé The Association of Community Advice Offices of South Africa (ACAOSA) has welcomed the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) decision to clamp down on illegal deductions from social grants. ACAOSA described the deductions as ‘stealing from the poor’. “We welcome SASSA’s move to take Grindrod Bank and Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) to court for making illegal deductions on social grants payments,” said Simbongile Kamtshe, Chief Executive Officer, ACAOSA. “This is a clear indication of human rights violation and needs to be stopped as soon as possible. We must now ensure that the deductions are stopped and that social grant beneficiaries - who by people who read are easy to manage. Children are advanced technologically and they want to learn through practical things. Learning should not stop with the certificate. Our attitude towards education mustn’t be negative. We must not just work for a salary, teaching is a big responsibility. The little resources we have must be fully utilised. We must change the attitude that the resources don’t matter because they belong to the government.” “My staff is motivated, my deputy (Matsane) announced the news of my graduation at the school and everybody was happy. I want to motivate them that if can still study at my age they also have a chance to do so. I thank the support system from the School Governing Body, York Timber, Pastor Roach who visits the school every Wednesday for moral regeneration.” Vinolia Mokoena definition are the most vulnerable in our communities - do not continue to be exploited.” The Social Assistance Act, 2004 was amended in May 2016 with the aim of stopping these unlawful deductions and improving the payment environment. Last month, Bathabile Dlamini (Minister of Social Development), instructed Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) to remove debit order facilities from SASSA branded cards. CPS is the service provider that was appointed in 2012 to pay social grants. ACAOSA officials will undertake an awareness campaign involving Ukuthula Advice Office in KwaMhlanga and Leandra Advice Office in Leandra, Mpumalanga in the short term. Other efforts at assisting communities will be coordinated with SASSA through advice offices in other parts of the country. Bekende Afrikaans akteurs Sandra Prinsloo en Marius Weyers. Fire Prevention Programme Kopano Dibakwane Komatiland has introduced a fire awareness programme targeting local primary and secondary schools. The aim is to equip learners with viable alternatives to avoid forest and wild fires. This also includes tips on fire prevention in homes and buildings. “The programme is in association with Working on Fire (WoF),” said Thobiso Selepe, Community Forester, Komatiland. “Komatiland organises presentations in schools based on fire prevention. Forest fires cause job losses. We promote looking after the trees. John Masina (Fire and Rescue, Thaba Chweu Municipality) gives information on building or structural fires. WoF gives a presentation on forest and wild fires. After the presentation English teachers are asked to identify eight learners in grade six, seven, eight and nine. The learners then have to write a poem on the causes, damages and prevention of wild fires. We visit the schools after a month to look at the poems. The learners receive goodies from the South African Forestry Company (SAFCOL) which includes bags, pens, and t-shirts.” “We ask secondary school principals to give us a slot with grade 11 and 12 learners where we provide career awareness, continues Selepe. We also provide; background on SAFCOL, institutions to study forestry and requirements, experience of a forester , bursary opportunities in SAFCOL, when and how to apply and what the bursaries cover. We need to change the mind-set that forestry is a profession for those who have failed in life.” “Forestry is one of the major contributors to our economy. We need professionals to sustain the business. SAFCOL has a Socio Economic Development Unit which deals with community development projects. These projects include; the Sabie Victim Empowerment Unit stationed at the police station, building classes for Sabie Primary. There is a General Forestry Learnership at SAFCOL. The deputy Minister of Public Enterprise, Bulelani Gratitude Magwanishe officially delivered one hundred desks in Bushbuckridge on June 2 made by learners from our Learnership,” concluded Selepe. Lianda Naudé South African National Parks (SANParks) refutes the claim that the dropped fence portion between the Kruger National Park (KNP) and Limpopo National Park as part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park agreement, for the increased rhino poaching activities. This comes after media reports appear to suggest that the organisation is blaming the fence. “A fence will never keep thieves out of any area,” said William Mabasa, Acting head of Communications, SANParks. “The dropped fence is not the reason for the increased poaching in South Africa. Poaching is also not a unique South African problem; it is a continental, if not a worldwide, problem which needs a global approach to win. Sub-Saharan Africa is losing 30 000 elephant to wildlife crime every year and what we are experiencing now is a spill over of this crime wave into South Africa.” The area where the fence was dropped over ten years ago, an area north of Shingwedzi, is not where KNP has suffered the highest number of rhino poaching incidents since 2008. The highest number of rhino poached is in the southern part of the Park where the fence is still intact. The fact that the fence was removed in 2004 and had no security features being only a simple five-foot high cable fence, must be borne in mind. “SANParks is fully committed to the Peace Parks concept,” continued Mbasa. “ SANParks is also a committed member of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park which comprises of the KNP in South Africa, Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe, and Limpopo National Park in Mozambique.” As long as the demand for illegal ivory and rhino horn exists and escalates, a multi-pronged approach addressing the entire illicit trafficking chain is the only feasible way to address organised wildlife crime. As a result of the peace parks initiative, over R640 million is being made available for developing the Mozambique component of the Transfrontier Park until 2022. The funding includes support for infrastructure development, socio-economic development (constituting a rural development and resettlement programme to move approximately 8 000 people away from the core Park to more suitable areas for sustainable livelihoods) as well as park management and anti-poaching operations. “Kruger National Park officials are working together with Limpopo National Park on a continuous base and have in the past achieved a lot of successes in their collaboration in a number of strategic anti-poaching interventions. These include improved cross-border collaboration and operations, joint training initiatives and the development of a joint communications system. SANParks is committed to conservation and building relations with its neighbours,” concluded Mabasa. GPS News Run to win Op pad... Lieze Loots Grondpaaie kan soms bedrieglik wees. The harsh realities of yesterday seem softened by this gentle and calm early morning light, and I wonder, half-awake, how best to face the day. A feeling of love, joy and peace enfolds me.As I begin to pray “Our Father, who art in Heaven...” I realise why. God is our Father. He loves us. Almighty God in charge of everything, the One whom no-one can ever dominate or rule, the One who is magnificent, allpowerful, all-glorious, all-seeing, is our Father. One can ever match His riches, strength, knowledge, authority and greatness... and, He is our Father. Not only that, being totally good, He only does good. He does not ever abuse or senselessly neglect or mislead his children. He is the Almighty, the king of Kings and we are His children... Recently, I watched the Comrades Marathon, and was amazed at the intense hardship the leading runners endure to win the prize. Not only on the day, do they persevere through agonising cramps and injuries, but in the days, weeks, months and even years, prior to the race, they are prepared to live a very disciplined lifestyle and undergo significant 7 hardship to even be able to face this daunting challenge. As I watched the last kilometres of the ladies’ race I thought of I Corinthians 9:24-25. “Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.” I thought of the friends and families of those who had completed the Comrades proudly meeting them with love, joy and relief streaming from their radiant faces. Then, I thought of God, our Heavenly Father, and the Heavenly host, maybe one day, meeting us with love, joy and relief streaming from their faces - when we finally win the eternal prize that will not fade away.... Again... I read in Galatians 6:9-10 “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers”, and I am reminded never to give up - doing what is right, regardless of persecutions, hostility or difficulties. Yes, no matter what we face, Our Father is there to help us lovingly and kindly persevere and endure to the very end - loving Him and doing good to please Him...and He is the Almighty, Amazing King of Kings! CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF PRIDE AND PASSION 1916 1960 In the beginning In 1916, the world was in the terrifying grip of World War I. In June that year, a weeklong artillery bombardment was launched by the Allies in preparation for an offensive that became known as the Battle of the Somme. Max Tucker acquired a substantial interest in Katzenellenbogen Limited in 1960. He merged it with his property and extensive stone quarrying interests. Max was a Lithuanian immigrant who arrived in South Africa at the tender age of 17. He found work in the Cape Town docks. In the same month, back home in South Africa, Herman Katzenellenbogen registered his wholesale business, Katzenellenbogen Limited (or “K’s” as it became known throughout the country). He was a coalminer, quarry man, hotelier, wholesaler, property dealer, sawmiller and a phenomenal marketer. Fast forward one hundred years and this little-known trading company has evolved into a leading forestry and timber processing enterprise, York Timbers. 1962 He was also much loved for his wisdom, fairness and sense of humour. It has travelled a long and winding path to emerge as a solid, In 1962, Max’s oldest son, Solly, strategic organisation with a bright was on a visit to South Africa from future. England. The origin of York Timbers Herman Katzenellenbogen had sought his fortune in the business of imports and locally manufactured a range of groceries, hardware and softgoods. 1946 The company was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1946. He had received the Commonwealth Exhibition to read Law at Trinity College in Cambridge and, at the time, was enjoying a prestigious lectureship in Roman-Dutch Law at Cambridge. Max managed to persuade his son to give up what would have been an esteemed career in law to join the family business. Solly took up the reigns as General Manager at the young age of 24 years. Solly retained a great passion for legal conundrums. He had a fearsome reputation for taking a court battle through to its bitter end. He was an eccentric character but, without doubt, an exceptional businessman. Over the course of four decades, he lead an organisation that saw itself diversify from a wholesale trading and stone quarry business to a fullyintegrated forestry and timber processing enterprise. He was pure brilliance when it came to engineering investments to buy plantations, sawmills and software as part of a vertical assimilation strategy that was adopted when wholesale and retail trading came under threat. Katzenellenbogen Limited’s success was greatly enhanced by the skills and foresight of other members of the Tucker family. Ivor, the younger son, joined the business shortly after he matriculated and played a pivotal role in merchandising, sales and marketing. Solly’s stepson, Lance Cooper, entered the business in his early twenties and, having cut his teeth across all the operations, took over the leadership role a decade later. At the time, he was one of the youngest CEOs of a JSElisted company. Growth and diversification In the early sixties, Katzenellenbogen Limited embarked on a diversification programme. This included the conversion of York Roller Mills Ltd into York Timbers Ltd; a small timber trader with seasoning kilns, and the first timber merchant to hold the SABS mark of quality. The first of many sawmills, Nicholson & Mullin in the Lowveld, was bought and the company started producing engineered prefabricated roof trusses. The scarcity of timber resources led to the purchase of more sawmills and the output of state forests. The company systematically moved from trading to production and ultimately to marketing, which set it apart from its competitors for many years. 1980 The business of ‘Katbogen’ had changed to such an extent that, in the early 80’s, the company name was changed to The York Timber Organisation Ltd (Yorkcor). The company thrived with the adoption of trailblazing technology at the time and product innovation. A state-of-the-art computer system was implemented, which was capable of processing planks at a rate of 100m per minute. Such technological advantages culminated in Yorkcor being awarded the contract to supply glulaminated pine railway sleepers to the South African Transport Service. As the business evolved, the tightly-held family business aligned itself with major stakeholders, including the AngloAmerican group, Mondi. A decade later, it expanded its timber interests vertically in order to secure its raw material supply lines. Extending its national footprint It divested its wholesale and retail activities and entered the competitive timber processing market. This saw it further extend its national footprint in forestry, milling and timber processing. 2007 It has been remarked that Yorkcor always boxed in a category above its weight and the ultimate coup was the purchase of Global Forest Products (GFP) in 2007. It was the same year the largest fire ever experienced in the history of South Africa swept through the Sabie valley, nearly derailing the company’s trajectory in the forestry industry. 2008 In 2008, the fate of Yorkcor rested on a due diligence exercise that assessed its longevity and sustainability in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The company was experiencing the negative aftermath of the acquisition cost of GFP, as well as a downturn in profits brought on by global and local economic factors.Stakeholders convened for an historic meeting to debate the company’s future. Should they strip and sell the assets of Yorkcor or breathe new life into the ailing organisation with a strategic growth plan? One man, now the current CEO Pieter van Zyl, faced a majority that favoured an exit strategy but he argued that the right decision was to retain and grow the organisation in its entirety. His stance was based purely on his belief that there was value in the assets; not just in the machinery and forests but, more importantly, in the people of York. The decision swung in his favour and the rest, as they say, is history. With the backing of a private equity firm and the IDC (Independent Development Corporation), the company embarked on an aggressive growth strategy. At the time, it was a wholly unpleasant experience for those that suffered the uncertainty of whether or not they’d keep their jobs. All salaried staff were asked to take a ten percent cut in pay. Many left but those that stayed the course collectively carried the renamed York Timbers on their shoulders to the point where, once again, it could hold its own in a fiercely competitive industry. 2016 As we celebrate 100 years of growth and diversification, we pay homage to the people of York Timbers. Their pride and passion have stood the test of time. Today, York Timbers is chasing a new goal - to be the major soft-wood processing enterprise in Southern Africa. This was in 1984 during a precarious journey to the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. He was accompanied by a friend from Scotland, Moira Scott, who captured the moment while standing on top of the bridge a few meters away. Durkan and Scott had driven for five days from Natal amidst a raging tropical storm which resulted in heavy rainfall which washed away roads and bridges. The storm was called Domoina and it formed in eastern Madagascar, it later made landfall in countries like Mozambique and Swaziland before striking the eastern part of South Africa. Durkan and Scott’s journey to see elephants at the Victoria Falls was delayed due to a string of endless and sudden detours. A few years passed after the big storm and Durkan dug into his photo album to mentally revisit the adventurous years on the road. The photo on the pipeline became mysterious as he could no longer recall the place where it was taken. All he could remember was the washed away roads and bridges all over the former Eastern Transvaal that turned a fairy tale journey into a living nightmare. “I showed the photo to Johnny Reinders at Divine Restaurant (Pilgrim’s Rest) and he posted it on Facebook,” said Durkan. “I tried for two years to search it myself but I couldn’t. It was hard for me to remember because we never intended to drive through Sabie from Natal during our tour to the Victoria Falls. We had to pass Sabie so that we could go via Pilgrims Rest. Sabie was in the middle of nowhere and I had never heard of it at the time. It was just a little town.” “There were rocks on the other side of the pipeline. I remember Moira crying after I crossed the pipeline and hid myself behind the rocks. She actually thought I had fallen into the river. She ran down from the bridge to see if I was okay. That was one of the funny moments on the journey. She came all the way from Scotland just to see elephants and I had to drive her to the Victoria Falls from Natal. That’s how the journey came about,” concluded Durkan who is a resident of Graskop. En Old Man River besluit: Satan sal buite, in sy huisie slaap, al vier seisoene lank. Sonder my. Ek hoop sommerso tussendeur dat Toontjie se toontjies vries. Nou, Satan se hok is groot. Old Brown sherry, my boek en koekies vir Satan is volgende. Toe strike dit my waar ek is. Ek is dors, my kop is seer en my mond proe soos honde koekies. Na die vyfhonderdste gelui antwoord Old Man River sy foon. “Kom help my,” is al wat ek sê. “Nou toe,” vra hy, waarmee help ek?” “Help my uit die verdomde hok uit. Asseblief.” Old Man River steur hom nie aan my protes nie en gooi groot. Hy beveel net ek moet dit drink. “Nou hoekom?” vra ek. “Ek het gisteraand gehoor hoe vrolik die OBS jou maak. So... ek het gereken ons sal nou maar saam jolig word. Dit is winter, jy weet.” Ag, nou ja. Hoe kan ek met daardie logika stry? Maar eerder, wil ek stry? Hierdie kan net die winternagte korter maak... 12 GPS News Left to right: Ronna Vermaak, Bianca Vermaak, Muke van Maanen and Michelle Harrison. All funds raised from the Chicken Challenge will go to the Greater Rape Intervention Project (GRIP). “The exhibition drew an enthusiastic crowd which was very receptive to the creative artworks and the thinking behind them,” said Karin Daymond, wellknown South African artist. “The work is strong and there are a high number of conceptually-evolved chickens. They have also improved technically, are more durable and have a good design sense.” Sappi Southern Africa commissioned eight well-known artists to complete chickens for this year’s challenge. The artists are Ayanda Nkosi, Jo Roets, Rogerio de Andrade, Niki Daly, Anton Bosch, Margy Malan, Karin Daymond and Ardmore Ceramics. Nkosi’s ‘Amazing Chick’ was inspired by not letting a situation at hand define who you are. “I would like to give back to and empower women and GRIP through my art contribution,” said Nkosi. “Tomorrow is a new day. Don’t let a situation define you, be the hero of your own story.” Daymond’s ‘I Believe I Can Fly’, is about transcending trauma and difficulty, the energy needed and the perspective required and gained. “This project allows joy and light into the difficult world in which GRIP operates,” said Diamond. “I wanted to portray something that transcends the tragedy.” Bosch’s ‘Chicken of Peace’, intends to show that if there is a feeling of collective brotherhood striving to live in a moral and righteous way, terrible deeds like rape won’t take place. An amount of R36 000 was raised on the first day of the online bidding and after the long weekend the amount stood at R45 220. “The bidding process has proven to be user-friendly and it’s exciting to watch live bidding and to see the proceeds increasing steadily,” said Caren Venter, committee member, Chicken Challenge. As a player you have to decide when to hang up your boots, but have a plan B, and mine was to get involved with coaching and development.” “My vision in this new challenge is to assist in the development of more coloured rugby players in this predominantly soccer playing province,” continued Boucher. “Not just the development of these players, but to create opportunities within the structures to widen their enthusiasm for the sport. I think my biggest challenge will be the demographics of the province. I believe the recent success of the professional team will play a huge role in the success of the province, and I would love to be a part of this new era,” he concluded. Boucher lived most of his school and working career in East London. He played club rugby for East London Police between 2000 and 2006. The committee regularly conducts home visits and compiles reports, keeping track of the wellbeing of our children.” The Penryn Helping Hand project was initiated by four parents; Iris Felix, Samantha Brander, Olivia Spies and Anthea Ngubane. “We decided that the Penreach Preand Primary target schools will be tangible beneficiaries,” explained the four. “At the same time we wanted the initiative to have an impact on the Penryn scholars as well by experiencing the gift of giving,” “This particular project not only creates social awareness amongst Penryn scholars to the needs of others less fortunate, but also aims to encourage them to take action and make a difference wherever they go. 2016 is only the start.
