Welcome
Since 1921 Alton greenhouses have been famous amongst gardeners
as the leading Cedar greenhouse on the market.Well known for the
best quality Canadian red Cedar which gives the Alton greenhouses a
long life, and a strong and stable frame.
Why Western Red Cedar?
The following text is taken from the Grading Rules for Exported
Canadian Western Red Cedar published by the Pacific Lumber
Inspection Bureau, Bellevue,Washington, USA
Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata)
'The largest and finest of the cedars produced anywhere in
the world, the western red cedar is famed for its
extraordinary durability and resistance to decay.
Western red cedar is a distinct species, possessing all
the desirable qualities of the other cedars, and
additional benefits besides. It can be finished to a
smooth, silky finish; it is free from pitch, it takes and
holds paints and stains excellently, and has superior
gluing properties. Its colour is extremely attractive,
varying from almost pure white of the narrow sapwood to
the light straw shade of dark reddish-brown of the
heartwood.
The wood of Western red cedar has a very low coefficient
of expansion, so that it does not shrink, swell or warp
excessively, even when subjected to changing degrees of
temperature and moisture.
It has prime insulating qualities and its pleasing
aromatic odour is repellent to moths, insects and vermin.
The wood is saturated to every fibre with a natural
preservative oil which renders it virtually immune from
decay and gives it extreme durability without artificial
preservative treatment.'
In the 70s (when aluminium greenhouses first came out) there was a
detailed 12 month investigation as to the different properties of Cedar
v Aluminium and it was found that the Alton greenhouse
produced heavier crops (12lb more tomatoes in the Alton
greenhouse) There was also noticeably less leaf-curl in the
Alton and less frequent watering was required. Not only
that but it was also found that the Alton greenhouse
used 18% less electricity to heat because the Cedar was
less subject to temperature fluctuations.

Do I have to keep painting my
Cedar greenhouse?
Its a common myth that if you choose a Cedar greenhouse then
you will spend the rest of your life painting it! In fact you can see
from the article above that the natural oils contained within
Cedar are far better than any man-made preservative.We do
factory dip the greenhouses, so they come with a coat of oilbased preservative, however it is cedar's natural oils which will
actually keep it going for so long.Therefore there is actually no
technical need to treat your greenhouse again. In time, it will fade
to an attractive silvery-grey colour.You could re-treat it every few
years if you wanted to top-up the original colour and ensure an
even longer life. In fact it is far more important to actually clean it
once a year and remove algae than to treat it.
Your Alton greenhouse is guaranteed for 10 years even if you never re-treat it, and it may well last
20 years without treatment.We've seen some Alton greenhouses which have been well looked
after and possibly re-treated every few years which are as old as 40 or even 50 years old and 30
years old is really quite common.
Strong Frame
Alton greenhouses are made from strong Cedar profiles and
fitted with numerous braces for good wind strength.
The roof braces are made from brown powder coated aluminium
which is finished with an attractive scrolled end - ideal for
hanging baskets.
On longer models with extensions, extra A-frame braces are
provided.
Firm foundation
The concrete base kerbs are one of the most famous features of
an Alton greenhouse.These are factory moulded and provide
very sturdy anchorage for your greenhouse.You'll need a firm
foundation of either a simple concrete footing or, if you prefer,
a fully slabbed base.The kerbs help with wind strength and are
supplied in a natural finish - but you can paint them with a
masonry style paint if you so wish.
Safety glass
All Alton greenhouses come with 3mm toughened safety glass as
standard.Toughened glass is 5-7 times stronger than horticultural
glass and if it does break it disintegrates into small pieces reducing the chance of injury. As a rough guide, it might survive a
football but it probably wouldn't survive a cricket ball.
Most Alton greenhouses are delivered in a series of factory glazed
panels - which means less handling of glass and a speedier
assembly. Glass is held in by either special rebates in the cedar
frame or with cedar full length beading. Again, this is good for wind strength and gives a finish
which is aesthetically pleasing. Almost all the glazing is in large sheets with no overlaps, and neat
pvc strips join panes where required on the gable ends.
Alton unique 'VentAccess'
sliding side vents
Only available on Alton greenhouses, these superb sliding side
vents are a real advantage. It’s well known that ventilation is vital
in a greenhouse and that most greenhouses do not have enough
vents as standard. It's also important that you have a combination
of roof vents (to release hot air) and low-level vents (to draw in
cool fresh air). Each Amateur and Traditional model has a
generous allocation of roughly 1 VentAccess every other panel
(so an 8x10 model for example has four VentAccess and two roof vents) The VentAccess can be
opened from the outside of the greenhouse which is ideal when your beds are full of tomatoes, or
when staging is in the way on the inside.
Louvres
Louvres are an option on most models and are normally situated
at a mid height.You can also fit auto-louvre openers to these for
automatic opening.
Roof vents
Each model comes with a certain number of roof vents and extra
roof vents can sometimes be added.We recommend that you also
add some auto-vent openers which will automatically open the
roof vent as the greenhouse warms up.
High eaves
The height of the eaves is vital on a greenhouse as this gives you
more head-room, more room for tall plants to grow and more
room for a high level shelf. All Alton greenhouse have at least 5'5"
to the eaves.

Easy slide doors
Guttering & downpipes
Many Alton greenhouses come with an
easy-slide door with no threshold or step
at the door.The kerbless doorways provide
good access for wheelbarrows and you can
even lock the door by fitting a padlock (not
supplied).
Standard now on all models - even octagonals. Alton guttering is
slightly smaller than 'house' guttering and is therefore nicely in
proportion with the greenhouse. Guttering is vital for keeping rain
off the sides and collecting the vital resource in a waterbutt.
Alton 'instant-fit'
cladding
On the Amateur and Traditional models,
you can add the clip-on cedar panels. Once
you have initially fitted all the brackets,
these clip on panels can be added quickly
and easily to one or more side or end of
the greenhouse.They are ideal for creating
a more traditional boarded bottom
appearance, they create a little extra
insulation in winter and they can hide
potentially messy storage areas under the
staging.
Why two different
shapes?
The Amateur models with sloping sides
create more light transmission through the
sides, particularly in the winter months
when the sun is low. Amateurs are also
slightly sturdier due to the sloping side
design.The straight sided Traditional
model allows you more room at the top for
shelving as you don't 'lose' any space.The
choice is yours!
Practical staging
& shelving
Alton staging & shelving is made
from a special finger jointed
hardwood on redwood bearers.
The high level shelves are an ideal
feature which add highly practical
extra capacity. Staging is available
in a choice of widths to suit your
greenhouse.The unique powder
coated steel brackets give strong
support and are brown colour
coded to give a more attractive
finish.
Internal
partitions
The 8ft and 10ft wide Amateur
models can be fitted with internal
partitions with hinged doors.This
will create a separate environment
at the back of the greenhouse ideal for propagating or overwintering to reduce heating bills.

Purpose built to fit your Alton
greenhouse, this strong staging is made
from finger jointed hardwood slats on
redwood bearers.
The staging is available in a choice of 20"
wide (for 6ft wide greenhouses), 27" wide
(for 8 & 10ft wide greenhouses) and 37"
wide (for 10ft wide greenhouses only)
The high level shelf is 12" wide.
Our unique powder coated metal
brackets are both strong and unobtrusive

Top quality Bayliss MK7 auto-vents can be easily added onto your roof
vents. A special wax-filled cylinder expands in the heat and opens the
window automatically - a must for any greenhouse.

Traditional models at a mid level.

What sort of base should
I prepare?
There are lots of choices for your base, the main principles being
that the base should be firm, level and square.
The most popular option is level paving slabs as these are easy to
lay, and water can drain away between the slabs. Remember that
water must be able to get away, so sealed solid bases such as
painted or tiled concrete can result in lying water unless
drainage is built in.
Water will also be free to move in or out of the greenhouse in
between the kerbs and the slabs
Your base will affect the long term strength and stability of your
greenhouse, so it is worth investing at this stage.
Your local Agent may be able to help you with your base.
Please note that greenhouses are rarely an exact size in feet - they are
often bigger than the nominal size - so what is called an 8x10
greenhouse would actually be nearer to 8'0" x 10'6".

Can you assemble the
greenhouse for me?
Most Alton greenhouses are sold on a 'self-assembly' basis, and
will be delivered in kit form, however, we do recommend that
you engage an experienced greenhouse fitter to assemble the
greenhouse for you.Your local Agent will be able to arrange this
for you.
The Dwarf wall and Victorian models are exceptions to this as
assembly is included with these models only. Please ensure that
your base is level, square and the right size.

Your Alton greenhouse comes with a free 10 year frame
guarantee.This covers the cedar framework against faulty
manufacture. Moving parts are guaranteed for
12 months. Exclusions include : glazing, wind damage,
Labour, and accidental damage.
