2012 Yearbook
Credit unions nationwide unite to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in your community.
A LETTER FROM THE
CHAIRMAN
Dear Supporters,
We are extremely grateful for the unprecedented
national support of our collaborative fundraising
program! This year we proudly introduced the Credit
Union Miracle Day, Inc. Family of Races benefiting
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals through Credit
Unions for Kids®. These spectacular races are gaining
national and international recognition.
• Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run®
— Washington‚ DC
• Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run
— Sacramento‚ California
• Credit Union Freedom Ten Mile Run
— Sister runs in Wiesbaden‚ Germany and Camp Arifjan‚ Kuwait
Credit Union Miracle Day wholeheartedly embraces the Freedom Runs that enhance the morale of our country’s
military service members and public servants serving in harm’s way. Please visit www.miracleday.org to see details
about the individual events.
Starting with the 2002 credit union sponsorship of our flagship event, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run®
in Washington, DC, credit unions and their partners nationwide have united to benefit Children’s Miracle Network
Hospitals. Now, the California run presents a successful model for other states to create their own running events,
elevating the fundraising efforts of the Family of Races.
To date, Credit Union Miracle Day has donated over $5.5 million to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in local
communities all across the nation. Thanks to the contribution of our lead partner, PSCU, and other major business
partners, every dollar donated by credit unions goes back their local children’s hospital where kids benefit from state-ofthe-art research‚ treatment and care, and is totaled through the Credit Unions for Kids recognition program. Credit
Unions for Kids is among the top three corporate contributors to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals nationwide‚ with
over $8.7 million donated in 2011 alone!
Through the Family of Races‚ credit unions and our business partners have an unparalleled opportunity to make a
difference in our communities, and to showcase the credit union people helping people philosophy nationally, in state
legislatures, and on Capitol Hill. It is exciting to report that a record breaking 188 Members of Congress signed up to
serve as Honorary Race Chairs of, and 950 Capitol Hill staffers participated in, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten
Mile Run, alongside over 7,000 credit union members.
I invite you to sign up today to be a sponsor of the 2013 races by going to www.miracleday.org. Please let me know
if your state would like to add a race to our family.
Your credit union or organization will benefit from the national exposure, and together, our
Family of Races can make a difference…in the lives of sick children in our communities.
In Cooperation,
Juri Valdov
Chairman, Credit Union Miracle Day, Inc.

Credit Union Cherry
Blossom Ten Mile Run®
Race day was memorable even without the Cherry Blossoms in bloom
(there were tulips though). Over 15,000 runners (half of them are credit
union members) enjoyed the scenic, fast run around the monuments and
across Memorial Bridge. Twelve-year old Carsten Connolly, the 2012
Ambassador for Children’s National Medical Center, ran his first 5K
with 26-year old Greg Wagner, a former Ambassador.
As the winners crossed the finish line, credit union officials held the
tape: Juri Valdov, CUMD Chairman; Fredda McDonald, PSCU EVP;
Fred Becker, NAFCU President; Bill Cheney, CUNA President; and
Mike Mercer, CUNA Chairman.
Congratulations to the CU Top Team, Top

2012 Freedom Runs
Sister runs supporting our troops and federal employees
overseas are an important element of the Credit Union Miracle
Day Family of Races. Service members as well as other U.S.
citizens stationed faraway appreciate the opportunity to
participate in these races and feel connected to their homeland.
For the past four years‚ sister runs have taken place in:
2009 – Baghdad, Iraq
2010 – Kabul‚ Afghanistan
2011 – Camp Arifjan‚ Kuwait
2012 – Camp Arifjan, Kuwait and Wiesbaden Army
Garrison, Germany
“We are extremely proud to be a part of events
that support our troops and serve as a morale
booster for those stationed in harm’s way‚”
said Chris McDonald‚ President/CEO of Andrews FCU.
The Defense Credit Union Council is a Credit Union Miracle
Day sponsor and strong advocate for the sister runs. In 2011‚
16 defense-related credit unions donated approximately
$113‚000 to Credit Union Miracle Day through their
sponsorships‚ benefiting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK HOSPITALS
CHAMPION STORIES
Meet Parmina Valentine, Cancer
Patient at California, UC Davis
Children’s Hospital. Parmina’s
grandmother, Pauline, is actually
grateful for the H1N1 flu virus.
Without it she would not have taken
her granddaughter to the hospital,
where a chest X-ray revealed
something shocking — Parmina
had cancer.
She was diagnosed with a
mediastinal embryonal germ cell
tumor attached to her thymus, a
small organ that sits just above the
heart and is part of the body’s
immune system. Rarely found in
children, this type of cancer occurs
most often in older men.
Doctors began chemotherapy
immediately, followed by surgery to
remove the tumor. The treatments
were successful, but Parmina’s
challenges didn’t end there. Side
effects of her life-saving treatment
include some permanent hearing
loss, lung damage, cognitive
difficulties and potential kidney
problems.
Despite life’s challenges, Parmina is
an irrepressible optimist. Now 11,
she takes good care of her two
younger sisters with special needs,
and she loves to perform magic,
especially for kids in the hospital.
On April 1, 2012, two special runners attended the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 5K
Run to help raise money for Children’s National Medical Center. Carsten Connolly, the
Children’s National Medical Center 2012 Children’s Miracle Network Champion, and
Greg Wagner, a former Children’s National Champion, not only attended the race but
also encouraged others to get involved.
When Carsten was six years old, he started having colds that never seemed to clear up.
When his pediatrician examined him during a routine office visit, she found something
far more alarming — swollen lymph nodes — and immediately referred him to Children’s
National Medical Center.
“They did blood work, and right then told us he was diagnosed with leukemia,” his
mother recalls. “He didn’t go home from the hospital. He started chemotherapy that
day.” For the next three and half years, Carsten went through difficult cancer treatments
and developed an iron imbalance that required extra hospital stays and surgery. Carsten
faced each challenge with courage, and has been cancer-free for more than two years.
Today, as the 2012 ambassador for Children’s National Medical Center, 12-year-old
Carsten inspires others with his story and helps to bring awareness to the needs of
children and families. But he also spends lots of time being a regular kid, playing
basketball and water polo, reading avidly, and earning his black belt in Tae Kwan Do.
This year’s race was especially meaningful as former Children’s National Champion,
Greg Wagner, ran the 5K race with Carsten. When Greg was only three years old, he
survived a ruptured brain aneurysm that caused a stroke and neurological damage to
the right side of his body. The great doctors and nurses at Children’s National Medical
Center saved his life. Now, 23 years later, Greg passes the torch to a new Children’s
National Champion.
“We ran on behalf of all of the children who are not able
to run themselves,” said Greg. “Together we can show them
that nothing is impossible.”

NATIONAL EXPOSURE
CAPITOL HILL
COMPETITION
The Capitol Hill Competition, a time-honored tradition instituted in 2002, is for
Members of Congress and their staff who compete against each other in the
Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run.
Bill Cheney
CUNA President
“The Cherry Blossom Run
has become a rite of spring
for credit unions and their
supporters, and is becoming
one for the Capitol Hill
community as well,” said
CUNA President Bill Cheney.
“Nearly 1,000 runners from
Capitol Hill participated in
this year’s race, indicating
their growing interest in
running and taking part in
this worthy event. The
outpouring of support by
credit unions for the race and
children’s hospitals across
the nation — combined
with the highest-ever
participation from the
Hill ensures that the impact
of event will resound
throughout credit unions
and Washington.”
6
In 2012 a record breaking 950 Capitol Hill runners participated in the run. The
competition is sponsored by Congressional Federal Credit Union and United
States Senate Federal Credit Union with support from the Credit Union National
Association and National Association of Federal Credit Unions.
“The additional involvement of the congressional
community through what we call ‘the race within
the Cherry Blossom race’ is terrific and a great
example of our community coming together to help
children in need,”
Charlie Mallon, President/CEO of Congressional FCU said.
This year, an unprecedented 188 Members of Congress from 44 states, D.C.
and Guam volunteered to serve as Honorary Race Chairs, including 32 U.S.
Senators.
“The response from the Members is outstanding and
very helpful to the collaborative efforts of credit unions
to raise funds for hospitalized children,” Mallon added.
Out of the 67 teams that competed, Sen. Michael Bennett’s “Too Extreme for
Colorado” team produced the winning team time of 3:21:14. Sen. Bennett
(Colorado) is also an Honorary Race Chair.
Rep. Earl Blumenauer’s “Red White and Blumenauer” team produced the
winning time on the House side of 3:31:38. His office also won the title last
year. Congressman Blumenauer (Oregon) is also an Honorary Race Chair.
Congressional and U.S. Senate FCUs hosted the annual Packet Pick Up event for
the Capitol Hill Competition on March 29. Credit unions staff distributed the
runners’ numbers and t-shirts to the steady stream of over 900 participants. In
addition, 20 Members of Congress stopped by the room to meet credit union
staff, PSCU EVP Fredda McDonald, running legend Bill Rodgers, Patty JasperZellner of Children’s National Medical Center, and the heads of the two trade
associations, Bill Cheney of CUNA and Fred Becker of NAFCU.
Thank you to the 188 Members of Congress and D.C.
Mayor Vincent Gray who support this vital cause as
distinguished Honorary Race Chairs.
Fred Becker
NAFCU President
“Credit unions’ service to
their communities is an
important part of our
mission, so we’re proud to
unite on a national level
once again to support
Children’s Miracle Network
Hospitals and the Children’s
National Medical Center,”
said NAFCU President
Fred Becker.
“After 11 years of credit
union participation and over
$5.5 million raised, there’s
no telling how many children
have been helped by credit
unions’ efforts.”
