ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA STATE SUMMER SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS
The California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) is an immersive, creative, and cutting-
edge pre-college program for talented and motivated high school students in the arts. CSSSA
nurtures future generations of artists, arts leaders and creative thinkers, training students in seven
different artistic disciplines: Animation, Creative Writing, Dance, Film, Music, Theatre and Visual
Arts. Taught by renowned practicing artists and college-level arts faculty, the curriculum gives
students a four-week immersive arts experience, allowing them to broaden their horizons, deepen
their skills and discover a path to college and career. CSSSA supports the creative economy of
California by training future members of the arts and entertainment industries, which comprise
one of the State’s largest business sectors.
Held on the campus of the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CSSSA provides an inspiring
educational experience for 500 young artists each year. Truly a bridge from high school to college,
the program offers graduates three units of California State university course credit, and it is a

OPENING WORDS FROM OUR DIRECTOR
“It is said that creativity is the mastery of skills and information put in the
service of dreams. CSSSA is a singular chance to dream big. CSSSA is a
professional training program taught by professional, working artists. CSSSA
is an experience that is intended to wake and shake you up, provoke you to
wonder, to see new vistas, offer new visions, new questions, new imaginings
for this art and in your lives. Congratulations to each of you and to your
families and your teachers and those who have stood behind you, with
you, challenged you, encouraged you, and been a part of this journey with
you, helped make it possible for you to be here. Thank you to the State of
California who makes this program possible. Thank you to the CSSSA
Foundation and the hundreds of donors who contributed to scholarships
and the guest artists who will perform and teach this summer.
Now you are here. Now you have this incredible opportunity. My hope
is that you take full advantage of it. CSSSA is 4 weeks of life packed with
possibility. Welcome each of you to the 28th summer session of the
California State Summer School for the Arts…CSSSA. Come with an open
mind, heart and imagination. Be prepared to be immersed in this experience.
I encourage you to throw yourself into it….Show up, pay attention, tell the
truth…and enjoy it all.

THE CSSSA FOUNDATION
A Note from the
Executive Director
The California State Summer School Arts Foundation was established in 1986 to raise private sector funds to support

providing opportunity for all deserving students. In 2008, the Herb Alpert Foundation reached out to CSSSA to administer
the Emerging Young Artist Scholarships. Since that time, the CSSSA Foundation has developed the strong mission, of
supporting CSSSA Students as they move on to college and careers.
In carrying out this primary purpose, the Foundation:

THE HERB ALPERT FOUNDATION
EMERGING YOUNG ARTISTS SCHOLARSHIPS
The Herb Alpert
Foundation
The CSSSA Foundation is proud to be the exclusive partner of the Herb Alpert Foundation Scholarships for Emerging
Young Artists, a major funding program for college-level artists. Each year, 21 CSSSA students receive awards ranging from
a one-time scholarship of $2,500 to a four-year scholarship totaling $40,000. The Herb Alpert EYA scholars are able
to use these funds to cover tuition and educational expenses at any college or university they choose to attend. “We
launched this scholarship program in 2008 in collaboration with CSSSA and have been thrilled to see the powerful
impact it has made on so many aspiring, talented and motivated young artists,” said Herb Alpert Foundation President

CSSSA Students represent the most outstanding young artists in our state. The State of California recognizes this with

CSSSA California Arts Scholars. This tradition of celebrating our young California Arts Scholars in their home communities
has been newly imagined. In recent years, the program has been revitalized, and reactivated through the generous
support of the Ovation Foundation, the Herb Alpert Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, supporting
the CSSSA Arts Scholar Network, and our CSSSA outreach and recognition efforts.
In 2014, we expanded our CSSSA Arts Scholar Network from 13 counties to 17 counties across the state. County arts
agencies in these 17 regions were involved in identifying motivated, high-potential young artists in their communities, and
encouraging them to apply to CSSSA. At the beginning of the summer, the partners produced local events to recognize
