Chamher Discusses Future Projects
The Abernathy Chamber of Commerce met Thursday morning at 7
a .m . to have breakfast and discuss
sever a l projects presently underway
a nd.future prospe(:ts.
The invocation was given by Lelland
Phillips and the minutes ci the previous meeting were reviewed .
The Communit y Brochure Committee . made up or Bill Elliott, Hoppy
To le r . Betty Neve and Keith Tooley
ga ve a report on the progress of the
Cit y brochure . The committee received
a proof of the brochure. made some
corrections 10 it. and will return it to
the print er to have 750 copies printed.

Two new directors were selected to
the Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors. Dale Thickston and Tony
Gereau were selected to take the two
positions open on the board.
A round of applause was given to
Bobby Cunningham for placing so high
at the Boston Marathon. Chamber
President John Hale stated that Bobby
represented Abernathy in an honorable
fashion and helped to .i put us on the
map .
The fourth of July celebration was
then discussed . Five floats have already been signed up for the parade
and several grQl4>S are working on
class reunions . There was also talk of
the possibility of a dance being sponsored .by the mothe.r s ci the cheerleaders.

sion from the Santa Fe Railroad
Company to see if Abernathy will be
given the railroad depot.
The Chamber discussed the possibility of using the depot as a museum if it
is donated to Abernathy . If it is
donated and moved to a new location,
it will have to be moved at Abernathy 's
cost.
Chamber members are looking for
suggestions from the public on where
the depot could be located and how it
could be utilized. By law, 11 must
remain where it is for a period of one
year , following the date it is abandoned.

Moreland prepared breakfast for the
meeting . The breakfast committee for
the June meeting will be John Hale.

week for each class in high school.

Ruiz is a lso the fi rst Abernathy track
state qua lifier s ince 1968 . He will run
in the 1600 meter run at Memorial
Sta dium in Aus tin Friday night.
Cletus Irlbeck won first place at the
Regiona l te nnis singles tournament
he ld a t the Tennis Center in Lubbock.
In the first match, he easily defeated

week at Abernathy Schools.
Varsity cheerleaders elected for the
82-83 school year were seniors, Mendy

Miniature Mule
It took her 2 I, years to gel a good

goal of breeding a minia ture mule on
their fa rm eI ght mil es northwest of
Abernathy.
The minia ture mule is a cross between a s hetla nd pony ( the mothe r l .
and a registered mini a ture donkey
( the fathe r l.
Severa l years ago. Elfa set out to
find a s hort shetland for the purpose of
breeding a minia ture mule. The
shortest s hetland s hE' found was 4 0
inches tall and she purchased it in
Lubbock .

them bac k then . The miniature mule
was 32 inches tall .
The n the 4 0 inch tall shetland was
put with Ihe 32 inch miniature donkey
for t he purpose of breeding a miniature
mule .
The minia ture mule was recently
born a nd is 24 inches tall. Elfa stated
tha I he would probably grow taller
tha n hi s fa ther. the donkey , but not as
ta ll as his she tland mother .
Miniature mules are unique in that
there are very few in this entire area .

Planning And Zoning
Planning and zoning for the City of
Abernathy was discussed. Bud Rhodes
was on tfand

knowledge of City zoning and planning,
as he has been involved with local
committees in the past set up to design
a plan for Abernathy .
Rhodes stated that he would be
interested in researching a planning
and zoning project for Abernathy . The
Council agreed to assist Rhodes by
having special City Council meetings
in the future on this subject. Rod Ellis
will also work with Rhodes on this
project.
High School Dance
The Council approved a request
made by the Junior Class parents to
use the Community Center May 14 for
a high school dance .
Seal Coat Contract
The seal coat contract to have city
streets seal coated the coming year,
was accepted with W.O . Turner Construction Compmy of Lubbock who
submitted a bid of $24 .857 to seal coat
IS,900 square yards. The bid is 53
cents a square yard and was the lowest
of the five bids sent from different
companies to the City. The City
budgeted 530 thousand for seal
coating this year.
Aerial Spraying Bid
An aerial mosquito spraying bid was
accepted with Southwest Aerial Services , Inc . of Hart. Application will
cost 48 cents and chemicals 36 cents
per acre for a total ci 84 cents per acre
each time the town area of 758 acres is
sprayed for mosquitoes.
Airport Improvemet\ts
The Council reviewed the specifications for airport improvements and
allthorized City Manager Rod Ellis to
advertise for bids on the project,
pending approval by the Texas
Aeronautical Canmission.
The cost of the project is estimated
at $200,000 of which $t52 thousand
will be federally funded and the other
$48 thousand will cOme from the City
of Abernathy .

Texas , until 2 : 00 p.m .. June 8. 1961 . for lurnishing all
necessary materials. machinery , equipment. superintendence , a nd labor for constructing ceriain,improvements a t the Aberna thy Municipa l Airport, Abe~thy ,
Texas.
Immediately following the closing time for receipt of
bids. proposals will be publicl y opened and read aloud.
Any bid received after closing time will be returned
unopened.
The project consists of the reconstruction of approximately 12.500 square yards of runway taxiwa y and
apron pavement ; the application of an asphalt seal coat
to a pproximately 41.500 square yards of runway,
taxiway a nd apron pavement ; marking of runway and
taxiway pavement : repair of damaged runway pave. ment ; a pplication of herbicidal treatment ; and other
related items of work.
Bidders must submit a Cashier 's Check or Certified
Check issued by a bank sat isfacwry to the Owner, or a
Proposal Bond Irom a reliable Surety Company,
payable without recourse W the order of The City of
Abern;>thy. Texas, in an amount not less than five
percent I 5% I of the largest possible bid submitted as a
guaranty that the Bidder will enter into a contract and
execute bonds a nd guaranty in the lorms provided
withi n ten I 10 1 days' after notice of award of contract
to him . Bids without the required Cbeck or Proposal
Bond will not be considered.
The successful Bidder will be required W lurnish a
Performance Bond and a Pay ment Bond, each in the
amount of the contract, written by a responsible Surety
Company. authorized w do business in the State of
Texas, and sa tisfactory to the Owner, as required by
Article 5160 , V.A.T .C.S., as amended by H.B. 344 ,
passed by the 56th Legislature. Regular Session, 1959.
The City of Abernathy , Texas reserves the right w
hold all proposaJs for a period not W exceed 30 days
after the date of receiving bids, w reject any or all bids
and to waive formalities. No bids may be withdrawn,
after having been opened, within the 30 day period set
out herein.
All lump s um and unit prices must be stated in both
script and figures . In case of ambiguity or lack of
clearness in stating the prices in the bids, the Owner
reserves the right to consider the most advantageous
construction thereof, or to reject the bid. The Owner
. reserves the r ight to reject any or all bids, W waive
formalities , and w accept the bid which seeme m06t
advantageous to the City's interest.
Bidders are expected to inspect the site of the work
and to ioform themselves regarding aU local conditions
lIlder which the work is to be done .
Attention is called to the fact that there must be paid
on the project not less than the general prevailing rates
of wages. as set out in the Special Provisions. However,
the inclusion of such minimum schedule of waaea does
not release the Contractor from compliance with any
State Wage Law that may be applicable. The Contractor must abide by tbe Wage and Hour Laws of the State
