A Rural Heaven Inspiring - Wrea Head Holiday Cottages
A rural heaven inspiring
charm, character and
tranquillity
Wrea Head Country Cottages are perfectly located just outside the village of Scalby, surrounded by
beautiful countryside on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, yet only three miles inland from
Scarborough and its golden sandy beaches. Ideally situated at the end of a private drive, the location
ensures a peaceful holiday as well as a safe environment for children to play.
The nine award winning cottages have been sympathetically and expertly converted from red brick farm
buildings and retain many of the original features, including oak beamed ceilings and pantile roofs.
Clustered around attractively landscaped courtyards, the cottages enjoy magnificent views across rolling
meadows towards the sea and Scarborough Castle. Six of our cottages are single storey, making access
for all ages much easier. Each is furnished and cleaned to the highest standard and all cottages are
accredited as 4 star accommodation by the Tourism Council.
In the recent past, Wrea Head Country Cottages have been named as the National Winner of
the English Tourist Council's “England for Excellence Awards” for the best self-catering
holiday. This tourism OSCAR recognises the highest standards of excellence in the
English tourism industry and gives you confidence that at Wrea Head we
continually strive to achieve the superior standards of quality, cleanliness and
customer care that you can depend upon when you book a holiday with us. We
are also proud to have been 3-times winners of the Yorkshire Tourist Board's
"White Rose Award".

The Cottages
The attractively converted farm buildings have been combined with modern appliances, aiming to make
your stay comfortable and easy to enjoy. Each cottage is fully-furnished and well-equipped and we
personally ensure that housekeeping and cleaning are of the highest standard.
In your cottage, a freshly laid tea tray will be found to
welcome you together with fresh flowers in the
window. We can arrange for champagne, flowers,
birthday or anniversary cards and cakes to be
delivered to your cottage. Or we can
have groceries purchased and stored
in your cottage for your arrival.
Each property has unique appeal. All
have well-equipped kitchens with a
full-size fridge (some with freezer),
4-ring gas cooker, microwave, toaster,
electric kettle, cafetiere, etc. and most
cottages have a dishwasher. There is a
full range of matching kitchen utensils,
crockery, cutlery, etc. to make cooking
an easy and enjoyable part of your
holiday. Cleaning materials, washing-up
liquid and tea towels are also supplied.
Each lounge has a colour TV, DVD/CD
player, radio and plenty of local
information for you to peruse.
The comfortable bedrooms are
beautifully co-ordinated with quality
furnishings, fully lined curtains, bedside lights and cosy wall to wall carpeting. All double
beds are either 4'6" or 6' wide; single beds are all 3' wide and full bed linen is provided.
Cots, high chairs and safety stair gates (where necessary) are also available.
Wrea Head as described by the YTB Yorkshire Forward's
"Alternative Guide to Yorkshire" June 2003:
"With awards all the way down to the beach, Wrea Head
Holiday Cottages sit in the middle of rural heaven, on the edge
of the North York Moors National Park and just three miles from
Scarborough. As well as the unspoilt views and the easy reach
to the beach, you can also use the indoor heated swimming
pool, Jacuzzi and sauna. What more could you wish for?"
The bathrooms all have a bath with a thermostatic controlled
overbath shower, washbasin and WC. Every cottage has full
central heating, 365 days a year with individually controlled time
clock and thermostat, to suit your own requirements.
A separate laundry room with automatic washing machines and
tumble drier is provided for our guests. This room also hosts
the Library, which contains DVDs, CDs, games and books for
our guests to use throughout their stay, together with extensive
information on the local area, attractions and events.

Facilities and Gardens
The superb indoor heated swimming pool
(11m x 5.5m) is open all year around, and is
kept at a comfortable 30˚C by it’s
sophisticated de-humidification and
purification systems. For further pampering
and relaxation we have the Jacuzzi whirlpool
spa with its invigorating pump action to
ensure you relax and feel totally exhilarated.
Or why not try our Swedish sauna - a marvellous way to unwind
and feel fully refreshed. Also in the building are changing rooms,
shower & WC, a poolside playpen and tropical flower and plant
displays.
The leisure facilities are for the exclusive use of residents only,
i.e. no clubs or private sessions.
Our spacious award winning gardens
include ivy clad walls, climbing roses,
landscaped courtyards and pretty flower
filled rainbutts that inspire the charm,
character and tranquillity of Wrea Head.
The extensive lawns, summerhouse and
gardens are an ideal setting to relax with a
good book or prepare an evening
barbecue and drinks, whilst enjoying the
stunning panoramic views of the sea,
Scarborough Castle and the surrounding
open countryside.
Children love to stay at Wrea Head. The
younger ones have their own Teddy Bears
Cottage - a two-storey fully-furnished
playhouse set in its own fenced
garden and picnic area, complete with Daddy
Bear, Mummy Bear and Baby Bear.
Older children will enjoy the unusually
well-equipped adventure playground, together
with the space for various ball games. Most
importantly we have a very safe and secure
environment for all the children to enjoy.

Local Area, Attractions
and Activities
There is so much to do within a short drive (or walk) from Wrea Head.
There are attractions and activities that appeal to all tastes and ages,
including the beautiful countryside, outdoor pursuits, historic buildings,
seaside resorts, market towns and small moorland villages.
The traditional seaside resort of Scarborough has many attractions for the
children - including the SeaLife Centre, Atlantis Watersplash World,
Kinderland Adventure Playground or donkey rides on the large, sandy
beaches at North and South Bay. There are also excellent beaches at Filey,
Hunmanby Gap and Bridlington.
Along the Yorkshire Heritage Coastline are many picturesque fishing ports,
including Whitby (former whaling port and home of
Captain Cook) and Robin Hood’s Bay (once famous for it’s smugglers – now for its
steep cobbled lanes and picturesque harbour).
Within a five minute drive is the North York Moors National Park, possessing stunning
views and a peaceful splendour where lazy summer days can be spent exploring the
beautiful moorland villages and market towns. Also nearby is Dalby
Forest with over 8,000 acres of woodland to explore and enjoy.
For our more energetic visitors, there are plentiful opportunities for walking or hiking in the
National Park or along the coastline. Many visitors also take advantage of the extensive
cycle tracks in the locality, especially in Dalby Forest. In addition, there are local riding
stables; sea, trout and coarse fishing; a large choice of quality golf courses or even quadbiking and 4x4 off-road driving.
Then there is the popular North Yorkshire Steam Railway which runs from Pickering
through Goathland (or Aidensfield in the TV series Heartbeat) and on to Grosmont. The
historic walled city of York (famous for the Minster and its Roman and Viking connections)
is easily accessible, as is Castle Howard – one of the great stately homes of England and location for the
TV series Brideshead Revisited.
Back home again and just behind Wrea Head are quiet lanes that take you to the lovely Forge Valley,
Harwood Dale and Troutsdale – peaceful and undisturbed areas perfect for a relaxing walk or drive.

Open throughout the year,
whatever the season
The cottages are open all year, which enables you to experience the first green
leaves of Spring to the spectacular Autumn tints, from the vivid purple of the
moorland heather to the dazzling golden daffodils.
We specialise in Short Breaks between October and April
and these can start on any day of the week. This provides
a great opportunity to relax and experience the beautiful
countryside in all its splendour. The moors, coast and
forests offer wonderful walking, cycling and horse-riding
experiences at this time of year. Alternatively, visit some
historic buildings, such as Whitby and Rievaulx Abbeys,
Scarborough, Helmsley and Pickering Castles or historic
houses at Nunnington Hall and Duncombe Park. Or why
not just try some retail therapy in Scarborough or York?
Whatever the weather, our indoor pool, jacuzzi and sauna are open all year round,
providing an enjoyable and relaxing way to start or end your day. In the evening there
are a variety of restaurants and cosy village pubs nearby. Why not combine dinner
out with a trip to the Stephen Joseph Theatre where you may even catch a first
showing of a new Alan Ayckbourn play.
Having nine cottages, we are able to accommodate up to 45 guests and this makes
us ideal for Group Bookings of families and friends. All the cottages are
conveniently located within close proximity of each other
and the leisure facilities.
Life is busy and very hectic, so why not treat yourself (and family or
friends) to all that Wrea Head Country Cottages has to offer. Steve
and Sue, the resident owners, are looking forward to welcoming
you and will be available to ensure that your stay at Wrea Head
Country Cottages will be happy and truly memorable.
