Because of You ...
Our Mission
We're seeing our mission accomplished and
our values carried out...
To provide a place of respite for parents and guardians
of children with special needs or life threatening medical
conditions where they will be refreshed, restored and
renewed in their role as caregivers.
Our Values
Respect We believe in the sanctity of human life and
therefore will treat everyone with dignity and respect.
Relationships We believe in the power of community.
We will celebrate and foster connections between parents,
parents and their children, parents with other parents,
with God, and with our community.
Compassion We are committed to serving
with care and empathy.
Empowerment We are committed to the principle of
“Paying it forward! We believe with exposure to the right
resources and the right people we can offer hope to one another.
Excellence We are committed to offering quality
Downstairs in Warren and Brenda’s basement are two blue
chairs from the old New York Yankee stadium. A few days
after David passed some dear friends, knowing his love for
the Yankees, dropped off the chairs. Inscribed on the back
was a plaque that contained a verse that described David’s
incredible faith: “I have fought the good fight, I have
finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
It goes without saying that David finished his race well!
Because of you, David, we are reminded to never give
up! Your life and death have taught us that beauty can
come from the most broken of circumstances. We are
reminded of your words, “I keep doing things I can’t;
that’s how I get to do them.”
Because of you,
innumerable families
are being refreshed and
renewed as they are
reminded that they are
not alone, that what
they do matters, and
that God loves them.
service, in fact at times being accused of extravagance, in
the execution of our mission.
1
David' s Refuge has changed the lives of over 150 families
touchedby disablilty or illness.
Dear Friends,
It is hard to believe it has been over five years since David passed away. Who would have ever
known that from the ashes of his disability and death something as beautiful as David’s Refuge
would be be born? We often pause and ask ourselves what has been the secret of our success and
growth. Without fail, the answer we always come away with is you!
The real power of our success is a result of the synergy that takes place when people and
communities work together for a common goal. Synergy is simply the creation of a whole that is
greater than the simple sum of its parts.
For the past three years friends, supporters, foundations, organizations, businesses, families,
volunteers, children, schools, and artists have linked hands and hearts together to enable us to live
out our mission. Together we have reminded caregivers that they are not alone, that what they do
matters, and that they are loved by God.
Brenda and I have had the privilege and joy of watching your individual contributions join with
others to create the beauty and power of David’s Refuge. Because of you... we are truly making a
difference.
With Tremendous Gratefulness,
Warren & Brenda Pfohl

Because of You ...
An Innkeeper’s Perspective
our partnering B&B' s and our compassionate hosts...
Several years ago I had the privilege of hearing
Warren share the story of how and why he and
Brenda started David’s Refuge. As Warren spoke
I could feel myself getting more and more excited
until it was nearly impossible for me to stay in my
seat and not wave my hands in the air and shout,
“We have a bed & breakfast! We could offer our
rooms!” I knew 10 Fitch wanted to be involved.
We hosted our first David’s Refuge weekend in
November 2013. To date we have hosted sixteen
couples. The atmosphere is ideal for them to share
their experiences, joys and challenges of raising a
special needs child.
We have been
incredibly blessed
to be a part of what
David’s Refuge is
doing. These couples
have touched our
hearts forever.
They are amazing parents and caregivers!
We have been so happy to serve them and love on
them during their brief
stay with us at 10 Fitch!

made to provide a
time of refreshment and
joy. There were smiles
and hugs squeals of
excitement, a spread of
yummy food,and games
galore. The entire
atmosphere reminded
me of a big family
reunion...and in so many
ways it was!
Because of You…
Our hosts carry out the mission of David’s Refuge.
We now have twenty-seven volunteer hosts that
offer support and love. They understand firsthand
the demands of caregiving, the loss of dreams, and
the need for respite and self care. So often parents
have a need to share their story with someone who
has walked down a similar path in life. Our desire
is to have a trained host, who has walked a similar
journey, readily and unobtrusively available to
every guest that stays at David’s Refuge.
We have been where the couples
that come to David’s Refuge are.
We have been exhausted, worn out,
feeling alone and misunderstood.
We have been discouraged,
frustrated, and depressed.
But, we have also been loved,
encouraged, and poured into! We
now had a chance to give back to
others what had been given to us,
a lifeline, connecting us to the
channel of God’s life-giving love.

service projects, Lemonade Stands, Walks, and a
Pasta Dinner they have raised over $2,000!
The 4th of July parade in Manlius, NY
was the surprise location for a David’s
Refuge Flashmob Dance. The goal of
the organizers was to raise awareness.
Beak and Skiff was the location
of our first fundraiser,
A Taste of David’s Refuge.
It was incredible to see
how our community came
together in support of
families with special
needs. Over $60,000 was
raised through this event.

Thank You David and Jacquie
This was our first David’s Refuge picnic
and we loved it! Our son kept saying
it was the best picnic ever and asking
when we could go back again . Thank
you to the many, many volunteers
who did an amazing job!
!
David Edsall and his sister Jacquie not only
regularly assist in our mailings, they shop for,
prepare, and deliver all of our guests’
gift baskets! In addition, they pick
up and deliver our flowers
each weekend. They have
faithfully served as key
volunteers for the past three
years. We could not be more
thankful for this incredible
volunteer team for all they
contribute to making
David’s Refuge work.
P lease share with your volunteers how
much events like these mean
to folks like us! What they do
matters so much!

We have loving nurses in our home 24/7 for our medically
fragile daughter, Giana . My husband and I are so busy
managing her care along with keeping up with her three
busy brothers that we are often like ships passing in
the night. To have a weekend to breathe, sleep in and be
completely spoiled was such a blessing to us! The other
special needs parents we met there were so lovely ; we
left with new friends! THANK YOU from the bottom of
our hearts. . Your mission is truly being met. We returned
home refreshed, renewed, and restored! ~ Rob&Dana

and we have grown our staff to enable us to look beyond
today and dream of our future!
Last year, Rory Lawrence joined the David’s Refuge team as our Guest Relations Manager. She
has continued to use her knowledge and experience to double the number of families served in
the past year. Now, in 2015, we have hired Kate Houck as our Development Director to continue
our mission and expand our resources. Below, Kate writes about her professional and personal
journey that brought her to David’s Refuge.
I am thrilled to join the team at David’s Refuge and work to
carry out the mission of Caring for the Caregiver. Providing
respite to parents and raising awareness about the incredible
work of a Caregiver is needed in our community. My goal is
to ensure this service is available to families who need it in the
greater Syracuse area and beyond.

This new position comes after a ten-year career and various development and
management positions within the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In my tenure,
I met wonderful people and learned the true meaning of strength, compassion
and hard work! I grew up near Rochester, NY but now live in Fayetteville, NY
with my husband Paul and our two children, Nathan and Leah. I am honored to
be a part of this wonderful organization and begin this new chapter of my life as
the Development Director for David’s Refuge.
