From an ex-miss Universe to the future

make the most of their brush with
Hollywood’s top talent: ‘There’s something

AU NCH ED I N 1963, M ISS G OL DEN GL OBE (A N D
occasionally mr.) is the title traditionally awarded
by the Hollywood Foreign Press association to
the offspring of a Globe winner. For actor parents,
it’s a chance to ease their children into the family business; for
honorees, it means exposure on a major platform. winners
hand out statuettes and escort talent from the stage at the Golden
Globe awards. but just how is miss Golden Globe chosen?
“It is one of the privileges that comes with being president,”
says HFPa president Theo Kingma, who was set to announce
the 2015 pick nov. 20. “The president does not have to go to
the board for final approval. People don’t vote for it.” Kingma
says that though he does get lobbied, in the case of this year’s
miss G.G., he approached the winner, whose father is a threetime Globe recipient. For the lucky invitee, it’s not a guarantee
of career longevity, but it sure doesn’t hurt, as proven by such
past winners as Linda evans and Laura dern.

Evans may not have had
celebrity parents (hers were
professional dancers) to
introduce her to Hollywood,
but she had already signed
a contract with MGM Studios
when she became the
second-ever Miss Golden
Globe in 19. A year
later, Evans landed a role
in the Western series The
Big Valley, which ran for 112
episodes, and in the 1980s
became a household name
with the ABC soap Dynasty,
for which she won a Golden
Globe in 1982. “That’s why it
was so special,” says Evans,
72, of her early experience
at the awards. “I got to win
one of my own after being
the one to hand the award
to all of these celebrities.”
Having left show business
in 1997, Evans travels the
country as a motivational
speaker for women.
corinna tsoPei
1967
Tsopei, 19’s Miss
Universe, left Greece
for Hollywood after
signing a contract
with Fox. “My English
was very poor, and
when they told
me I was going to be
Miss Golden Globe,
I thought they meant
the boxing thing,”
says Tsopei, now 70.
“I told them I didn’t
want to do anything
that violent. Then
they told me it was
Globes, not Gloves.”
Tsopei, who married
superagent Freddie
Fields in 1981 and
acted in a handful of
projects, including
the 1970 Western A
Man Called Horse,
now devotes herself
to the charitable
organization SHARE.

calista carradine 1986
Granddaughter of early Hollywood
film star John and daughter of Kill Bill
actor David, Calista represented the third
generation of Carradines at the 198
Globes. “We were beginning a film that
took decades to make,” says
the singer-actress, 52, of
Mata Hari, a movie directed
by her father, in which she
played the famous spy and
he played her father (it’s now

business so that by the time
our film came out, I would be famous.”
Though Dern, at just 15, was the youngest honoree to be dubbed
Miss Golden Globe, she was far from new to the industry. The
daughter of Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, Dern went from making
cameos in her mother’s films to landing her own breakout roles
in 198’s Blue Velvet and 1990’s Wild at Heart. She co-starred with
her mother in 1991’s Rambling Rose, for which both actresses
received Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Dern, 7, has since
won three Globes of her own and is a 201 contender for The Fault
in Our Stars and Wild.

liza huber 2000
The daughter of All My Children’s Susan Lucci, Huber was having her morning bowl
of oatmeal when she learned she’d be handing out the trophies at the 2000 Globes
ceremony. “Having grown up with a mother who was a celebrity herself, you don’t get
as starstruck because you become used to seeing celebrities,” says Huber, who played
Gwen Hotchkiss on the NBC soap Passions for 981 episodes. “But there was something
to be said about standing shoulder to shoulder with Steven Spielberg! Being in the
same room with that caliber of talent was spectacular.” Huber, 39, now is a mother of
four and CEO and founder of Sage Spoonfuls, a healthy baby food and product line.

jaime nicole dudney 1996
The daughter of country superstar Barbara
Mandrell, Dudney followed up her turn
as Miss Golden Globe (sharing the honor
with Mr. Golden Globe, Freddie Prinze
Jr.) with a role as her own aunt in Get to
the Heart: The Barbara Mandrell Story,
a 1997 TV biopic co-executive produced
by her parents. Today, Dudney, 38,
lives in Tennessee and works as director
of hospitality and entertainment at her
mother’s former estate, Fontanel, now a
hotel, resort and tour site.

joely fisher 1992
For Fisher, the daughter of singer Eddie
Fisher and actress Connie Stevens,
what stands out most about being the
ceremony’s trophy girl in 1992 is all
the racing around. “I didn’t know the
amount of walking across the stage I
was going to be doing, and my dress
was a little bit tight,” she recalls. “I had
one winner shove me out to the stage
from the back and ask me to walk faster
this time!” In 1998, she earned her own
nomination for her role as Paige on the
sitcom Ellen. After a four-year stint on
the Fox series
’Til Death,
the actress
has set her
sights on a
career in TV
directing.
She’ll next
appear in
the film By
the Rivers
of Babylon,
alongside
her mother.

dakota johnson 2006
Johnson, now 25, isn’t just a third-generation
actress, but the first second-generation Miss
Golden Globe. The daughter of Don Johnson and
Melanie Griffith and granddaughter of Tippi
Hedren followed in the footsteps of her mother
(Miss G.G. class of ’75) in 2006, the same year
she signed with IMG Models. Johnson booked a
small role in 2010’s Golden Globe-winning The
Social Network, then starred on Fox’s Ben and Kate
until it was canceled in 2013. But the following
year would see an explosion in her career, when she
was cast as Anastasia Steele in the erotic drama
Fifty Shades of Grey, a controversial choice even
among her own family members. Hedren told THR
in June: “I’ve seen the trailer. That’s all I have to
watch.” Johnson also scored a role in the 2015 FBI
drama Black Mass, opposite Johnny Depp.
Lily and Kevin
Costner at the
2004 Globes.
lily costner 2004
Costner is the rare Miss Golden Globe to use the
position as a springboard to launch a career in music,
not film or television. The daughter of Kevin Costner,
she had made her acting debut at just 9 years old
in 1995’s The Baby-Sitters Club, but after a role in her
father’s 1997 film The Postman, she changed paths. Not
to be outdone, her father formed his own country rock
band, Kevin Costner & Modern West, in 2007. Now a
singer-songwriter, Lily, 28, has performed at the Grand
Ole Opry in Nashville and contributed tracks to her
father’s band’s 2012 album. She most recently appeared
as the opening act and special guest for several stops
on Modern West’s road tour earlier this year.
