Red Star keeps Navs out of first,
Chippewa close in third

A lot has happened in the sports world since the last
edition of the Deerhorn Sun. We had the first Sunday Event, an intense scalp game, and discovered that the race in
the quest to win the summer is very close. In the last Scalp game of “A” session, the Navajo won the first game, the
Chippewa won the second, and the Apache took the last two. Navajo regained momentum by winning both the
“Leader plus two game” and the leader game. The Iroquois have yet to win a regular scalp game. Meanwhile, in the
first Sunday event, the Treasure Hunt, it looked like the Navajo were destined to take first place. Griff Parry was way
ahead in the kayaking part after his campers found all the items they needed to find very quickly. However, the
Apache and Charlie Stelnicki ended up in front of the Navs as Parry lost some time in the biking part of the
competition. On the final day of the session the stars were counted and the standings were released. In a wildly close
race, the Apache came in first by the margin of a single red star. The Navajo finished second, the Chips third (trailing
Apache by only 375 points), and the Iroquois fourth, 3,000 points out of first. Sports beat writer Max Tunnicliffe sat
down with Stelnicki, the leader of the first place Apache.
Tunnicliffe: How does it feel to be leading the first place Apache?
Stelnicki: It feels great, I’m really proud of my team.
Tunnicliffe: How do you think the Apache can stay in first the rest of the summer?
Stelnicki: By hard work, determination, and red stars.
Tunnicliffe: How excited were you when you won the Treasure Hunt?
Stelnicki: I actually didn’t know we won at first but when it hit me it was a super cool feeling.
A Sit-Down with Amy
By Alex Polovin
Alex: How do you think the Broadbridges are doing running Camp?
Amy: We are working very hard to keep Deerhorn running so that the next
generation can enjoy camp. Teamwork is the key.
Alex: What is your favorite thing about camp?
Amy: Being part of people’s lives and the amazing friendships that are made
Alex: How would you keep camp running forever?
Amy: Be wiling to work together to care about others and not being afraid to
ask for help.
By the Numbers…
Alex: If you could add an activity to camp, what would it be?
Amy: An adventure activity. Something like zip lining, a climbing wall, or a
ropes course.
Alex: How do you think the camp dogs have been behaving?
Amy: We have dogs that behave amazingly well, but it would be nice if Katniss would let people pet
her.
Alex: What do you think of our evening activities?
Amy: I think Ryan and Kiana are doing an awesome job.
If you have a question about camp, find Alex Polovin and your question may be featured in next week’s
edition of the Deerhorn Sun!

that in order to win the

summer, he has to keep
communication within the
members of his team
strong. He needs to
encourage his teammates
and lead by example by
getting all members of his team to work together and
participate in all activities. He believes that if this is
accomplished, they have a shot at winning the
summer. “Being a leader is awesome. It’s something
I’ve been looking forward to since last fall, and I’m
happy to be here.” Patrick looks to build off of a strong
A session and having a fun and competitive B session
squad.
Cookies Corner
By Erik Persson
Hello B session campers! I am Erik (Cookies) Persson. I am your food critic and will be
sharing my advice on what to eat and what the best meals are in camp. As always, we
start with breakfast. It always makes me happy when we start the day off with cinnamon
rolls. They are filling and taste pretty good. Another good meal was the 4th of July
pancakes, as they were patriotic and tasted better than they looked. I know that some
people. Including my friend Bear, wanted the biscuits and gravy yto have a little more
kick to them, but I digress. One thing this week that made me sad was having bagels and
fish patties in the same day, as I personally don’t love those meals. This brings me to
lunch. Sloppy Joes and Italian Subs are my favorites. The candies being passed out at
lunch have been pretty solid – Charleston Chew’s are a camper favorite. Dinner is also
very important. Beef and pasta is a great meal that fills you up. My only complaint
about the food this week would be that there were not enough cookies passed out last
Sunday.
