A
visit to Downtown would not
be complete without a visit to
historic Pearl Street stores,
restaurants and bars. Stamp ‘n Hand on
the corner of Pearl and 4th has a huge
selection of stamps, stencils, gifts and
home decorating ideas.

FALL 2013
Between 3rd and 2nd you’ll find Pearl
Street West, a group of specialty shops.
Stop in and enjoy homemade ice cream,
voted locally as La Crosse’s best, and delicious homemade chocolates at The Pearl,
an authentic 1930s Ice Cream Parlor
and Con
fectionery. On the corner of
Pearl and 2nd is Satori Arts Gallery where
you will find many pieces of art, ancient
Chinese artifacts and on-site handcrafted
jewelry. Up the block you’ll find Buzzard
Billy’s, with plenty of room to relax and
watch your favorite activity. Bring the
whole family to enjoy their nice variety
of Cajun fare.
Pearl Street shopping and dining is
conveniently located just across from the
La Crosse Center and a short walk from
Riverside park. u

elcome to one of the
largest
Commercial
Historic Districts in
Wisconsin—listed on the National and
State Historic Registers. This site is a
nationally-recognized Great American
Main Street Award Recipient. If you enjoy
specialty shops, quality clothing, crafts,
galleries and good places to eat, downtown La Crosse is where you need to be!
Antique lovers should visit the Antique
Center on 3rd Street with three floors to
browse. It’s one of the largest antique
stores in our area!
Main Street is in the heart of downtown
La Crosse. Immerse yourself in history
while shopping for consignment goods of
all kinds at Treasures on Main.
Just north of City Hall, 4th Street turns
into Copeland Avenue where you will
find a variety of shops and services. Take
a break during your day of shopping to
be inspired at Psychic Readings by Gina,
located there on Copeland.
Take the family to visit the Children’s
Museum, the Swarthout Museum in the
public library, and during the summer, the
Riverside Museum in Riverside Park.
Downtown La Crosse has an excellent
selection of eating establishments. At 4th
Street & Pearl is Fayze’s, a local favorite serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Take home some of their fresh bakery
goods. Pickerman’s on Jay offers delicious
sandwiches on freshly baked bread, gourmet soups, and salads. At the Holiday
Inn, Buster’s Bar & Grill is a great gathering place. An impressive beer and wine
selection add to the experience. On Main
Street, Grounded Specialty Coffee has
superb sandwiches, wraps and salads in
addition to great beverages. For a family
restaurant, try the King Street Kitchen,
known for its friendly service and hearty
entrees. Lindy’s Subs and Salads, on Main,
has tasty subs and accompany that with
their fresh salads.
Above the People’s Food Co-op, on
Fifth, try Hackberry’s Bistro for lunch or
dinner and pick up the best fresh produce
on your way out.
Treat yourself to Piggy’s, an award winning restaurant on Front Street that specializes in hickory-smoked entrees. You’ll
have your choice of casual or fine dining.
10
FALL 2013
Just next door from Piggy’s you’ll find
La Crosse’s original wine bar, Wine Guyz
offering 36 wines by the glass. Their Back
Alley Deli is open for lunch at 11a.m. Mon.Sat with paninis, soup, appetizers, pizzas,
and cheese plates. Shop while you sip!
Hundreds of labels and great gifts. They
are located on King Street.
The Freight House is La Crosse’s premier steak and seafood restaurant and is a
national historic site. Enjoy their weekend
entertainment.
Along the north end of Riverside Park
you’ll find great food and spectacular service for lunch and dinner at The Waterfront
Restaurant and Tavern. What a view!
Stroll down to Riverside Park to see
“The Mighty Mississippi” and several interesting sculptures there. It’s the site for
Riverfest, the Sand Sculpting Festival, the
riverboats, summer concerts and during
the winter, the popular Rotary Lights display.
Take advantage of all of the scenery and
excitement that you will find in downtown
La Crosse! u

La Crescent Applefest
The La Crescent Apple Festival was founded in
September 1949 by Ralph Jones and Mel
Hickenbotham, with the purpose of promoting
La Crescent, its apple industry, and “putting La Crescent
on the map”. The initial planning session was held just two weeks prior to the fest. The
first Apple Festival was a huge success, drawing a crowd of nearly 20,000 people and was
just a sample of what was to come, as the festival has grown in size and quality every year.

hile you are in the
area, visit La Crosse’s
Northside,
located south of Onalaska and north of
Downtown La Crosse. There are many
shopping areas including Old Towne
North where family-owned specialty
shops line Caledonia Street with that
“olde worlde” atmosphere.
For antique lovers, Caledonia Street
Antiques, LLP is a must-see shop
with 6000 feet of displays and many
dealers.
La Crosse’s Steam
Locomotive, Caboose &
Grand Crossing Tower
Copeland Park, on La Crosse’s Northside,
is home to the historic steam locomotive,
the #4000, Milwaukee Road Caboose
#0359, and the Grand Crossing Tower rail
switching tower. The locomotive, built in
1930, ran on coal and water and was one
of the largest of its type. The crossing
tower was used to prevent trains from
meeting one another. Volunteers host
“Rail Fair” each July with tours and a flea
market to fund preservation of this historic railroad display. u

he Great River Road follows
Wisconsin State Highway 35 from
Prescott south through Onalaska
and La Crosse to Prairie du Chien and
then follows all weather county roads to
Cassville. From Cassville, Hwy. 133 meets
US 61 at Tenneyson and carries the Great
River Road to the Illinois line. Watch for
the Great River Road signs marking the
route.
Much of Wisconsin’s Great River
Road is etched at the base of bluffs and
adjacent to the river. It passes through
many communities such as Onalaska,
Holmen and Trempealeau. The road
curves winding with the river, a drive to
enjoy. The 30 mile stretch between Alma
and Maiden Rock and 60 miles between
La Crosse and Praire du Chien is considered to be one of the most scenic routes
in America. Many waysides and overlooks provide an opportunity to stop,
rest and photograph the river scenery.

ith the extensive marshland, wooded bottom lands, open water, sand prairie and

Local areas to go birding:
Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge:
Drive 3.25 miles west on Hwy 35/54 from Centerville.
Turn south at the sign for the refuge & follow 1 mile to
the entrance. The diverse habitat attracts more than
29 warbler species & 100 bird species at the height of
migration. Don’t miss the 4-mile Wildlife Drive, Keip’s
Island, Nature Trail to Pine Creek Dike, Interpretation
Center and Observation Deck. Maps are available.
Eagles can be seen along
the Mississippi River
Perrot State Park:
Access from the south through Trempealeau, WI via
Hwy 93. Follow signs for the park. Excellent birding
during spring & fall migrations. Watch for Bald Eagles
and Tundra Swans.
Van Loon Wildlife Area:
On Hwy 35/54 heading north from Holmen, WI or by
driving east from the village of Trempealeau on Hwy
35 for about 3-4 miles. This area borders the Black
River and has mixed hardwood forest & marshland.
Great Blue Heron

& Hixon Forest
Myrick Park is the home of the Myrick Hixon EcoPark, which is a hub to Hixon Forest

T
cashton, wi
ake a day trip to the Cashton
area. From its beautiful scenery
to its attractions your day will
be filled with treasures for your senses.
The Cashton area, just 15 minutes south
of interstate 90 at Sparta, is home to the
state of Wisconsin’s largest Amish community.
Approximately 300 Old Order Amish families
make their home in the Cashton settlement.
Known for their quality hand crafted furniture,
quilts, rugs, baskets and other products there is
sure to be something for everyone.
Some of the things that will make a fun
day trip to the Cashton area are a stop at The
Village shops at Down A Country Road, where
you will find 6 unique gift shops, which were
built by the Amish and feature products made
by them as well as other local Artisans and
some very unique general giftware. The gift
shops are set in a village like setting, connected with a brick pathway amongst gorgeous
gardens. You will find The Amish Shop, Emma’s
Kitchen, Memories from Amish Country, The
Little Red Shed, Not So Plain & Simple and the
Country Corner Ice Cream Shop located on the
farm of Chuck and Kathy Kuderer just 2 miles
east of Cashton. Kathy also provides tours of
the Amish community so if you have curiosity
about the Amish way of life, you may want to
make a reservation for a tour.
You will want to visit the Old Country
Cheese Factory on Co. D which is owned by
the Amish, although they do not operate it.
You will find many varieties of fresh made
cheeses, aged cheeses and of course cheese
curds! Watch thru the viewing window as the
cheese is made.
Another stop just south of Cashton along
Hwy 27 is the Pasture Pride Cheese Store. Filled
with delightful cheese made from the milk
provided by the Amish, as well as giftware it is
a stop you don’t want to miss.
If it’s flowers or produce you are looking
for… the Cashton area is abundant with green
houses at the Amish farms, or a visit to the
Growers Produce Auction is a fun event to take
in and held two or three times a week from
April thru October.
From what you have just heard… I think it
will have to be more than a day trip. Come on
back to Cashton as many times as you would
like. We welcome you to come explore with us.

Although common in
Minnesota, this frog is often hard to locate because
it changes color to blend in with tree bark and
leaves. One color that doesn’t change is the bright
yellow inner-thigh of the gray frog’s hind legs.

inona is nestled between the covered limestone river bluffs that rise 500 feet
and the stunning mighty Mississippi River.
The historic architecture and cultural opportunities give Winona a soul
that is living, breathing and growing. Still, Winona and its wealth of culture, arts, history,
recreation and festivals, is relatively undiscovered.
Winona was founded in 1851 by a steamboat captain. Positioned on a large island
in the Mississippi, the lumber industry helped it grow quickly and by 1900 Winona had
more millionaires per capita than any place in the United States. Winona’s history lives on
in architecturally significant historic buildings and vintage homes that thrill history buffs.
Today, Winona is driven by a strong entrepreneurial spirit that has given birth to a
city that has built its future by embracing its past. There is a strong arts movement,
abundant shopping, comfortable lodging and a variety of restaurants.
In many ways Winona is still an island in the wilderness waiting to be discovered
again. All of this is waiting for you. Make your plans today to discover Winona, the historic island city on the Mississippi. u

Onalaska A Brief History
G
reat glaciers of the Ice Age bypassed Onalaska, forming the “driftless region”
which left the majestic scenery and topography of Onalaska. The steep rocky
bluffs, winding valleys, fertile river bottom and great Mississippi River Basin
made the Onalaska area appealing for habitation. As early as 8,000 BC, Native Americans
lived in small mobile family groups in the Onalaska area. Later, the Oneota culture was
noted for their farming methods, as well as using the area for fishing, and hunting.
Onalaska was originally founded by Thomas G. Rowe from New York, who came here in
1851. It soon became a flourishing lumber town. The name “Onalaska” came from the
poem, “The Pleasures of Hope,” by Thomas Campbell, published in 1799. Rowe liked the
line, “The wolf’s long howl from Oonalaska’s shore,” and decided to use the name, only
with one “o”. Onalaska is built on a ridge overlooking Lake Onalaska and the Black River,
the Mississippi River and the Minnesota bluffs three miles away. u
