IN THIS ISSUE
In the late 1970’s, the unique building of the old Majestic Hotel was once under threat of being demolished by its
own proprietors to make way for a 23-storey office and shopping complex! This was met with strong opposition
from the Malaysian Institute of Architects, which had listed the hotel in its 1976 publication, Guide to Kuala
Lumpur’s Notable Buildings. Local architect Hajeedar Hj Abdul Majid waxed lyrical the following year: “An old
man without memories is not an old man, is he? A city like ours needs buildings like the Majestic. They are a measure, a
physical form by which we measure time and the progress we have made”.
In 1976, Hotel Majestic was classified under the Antiquities Act 1976 which provides for the preservation of places
and structures of historical and architectural significance. It was then acquired by the government and earmarked
to house the National Art Gallery. The last 19 guests checked out of the Hotel Majestic on 1st January 1984, closing
a chapter in history. It spelled an end of an era for its workers, some of whom had served faithfully for nearly 30
years

National Museum/ Muzium Negara
Power Woman Encore Concert Celebrating
Genting 50th Anniversary
Muzium Negara was established on the site of the former Selangor Museum. It was built by the British and
Selangor governments in 1898 following the formation of the Federated Malay States in 1896. On 10 March 1945,
during the end of World War II, the right wing of the museum was bombed and destroyed by the US B-29 bomber,
from the Allied Forces. The museum's collection was then moved to the Perak Museum in Taiping.
Muzium Negara is a palatial structure built in the style of Rumah Gadang, an aspect of Minangkabau architecture.
Its facade comprises elements of traditional Malay and modern features. Muzium Negara was opened on 31
August 1963, and it serves as a repository of Malaysia’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

Based on the wildly popular 1970s film that defined the disco
phenomenon and starring Oscar-nominee John Travolta, Saturday
Night Fever depicts the uncompromisingly sordid 1970’s New York
that not only made a dance revolution at that time, but also spoke straight to a generation of lost, struggling young
adults. Premiered in the West End at the London Palladium in 1998 and Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre in
1999, the spectacular Bee Gees’ musical Saturday Night Fever has been seen by over 10 million people with over
2,800 shows in more than 20 countries across the globe, thrilling theatre and music buffs alike throughout the
years.
The Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2015 is an ATP World Tour 250 Series event, and one of only five ATP
