Reality Check of TobaccoFree Staten Island Where
Youth Take Action.
Big Tobacco dishes out $1 million an hour to
market their deadly and addictive products that
appeal to youth. The tobacco industry knows
that their customers are dropping like flies, and
who better to replace them than you and your
peers?
• Each day in the United States, 3,800+ youth 18
years or younger smoke their first cigarettes and
2,100 others become daily cigarette smokers.
• Nearly 9 out of 10 cigarette smokers first tried
smoking by age 18, and 99% first tried smoking
by age 26.
Reality Check works towards decreasing the social acceptability of tobacco use.
• Are you interested in making a difference
in your community & city?
• Do you want to meet new friends, travel,
and have a great time all while helping to save
lives?
• Are you between the ages of 12 and 18?
Then Reality Check is for you.
“It is important to know as MUCH as possible
about teenage smoking patterns and attitudes.
Today’s teenager is tomorrow’s potential regular customer…”

Driver Education program for new drivers 16 years
and older. The class meets at the Bernikow JCC for
classroom work and is provided with in-car classes.
Students receive a professionally taught Driver Education course that will provide a comprehensive
introduction to the driving experience. This will
include: rules of the road, traffic safety concerns,
defensive driving, proper handling of a vehicle,
driving in traffic and problems of substance abuse
as related to driving. Students must successful
complete both the road and theory portions of the
course in order to receive a MV 285, formerly
known as the Blue Card. For more information call

The JCC Cornerstone programs are youth and community programs offered in community centers in
NYCHA housing areas on Staten Island. Programs are offered specifically for elementary school age children (after school program and summer camp), middle school and high school students, young adults and
adults in the community. This DYCD program was added five years ago with the goal of developing community pride, community building and community spirit through organized programs based on the needs
of the community. Other community programs are encouraged to offer their programs at each site. In
addition, the community is welcome to provide input and feedback into the program planning through
an active advisory board which meets monthly. Participants in each program are considered first from
the NYCHA buildings as well as from the surrounding community. The summer camp program serves
the elementary age group only with additional funding provided to open the community centers in the
evenings and weekends for middle and high school students. The staff of the JCC Cornerstone programs
are hired primarily from the community. For more information about the JCC Cornerstone programs
please contact the community center at the number provided above.
