Bullhead Carp Oneida Lake is the largest inland lake located entirely within New York State and has more fish per acre than any other lake in the Northeast! Catfish Chinook Salmon Coho Salmon About 70,000 fishing licenses are Lake Trout sold each year in the county — with 39,000 to non-New York State residents! Largemouth Bass We’re home to nine world fishing Northern Pike records for trout, salmon, and other species, plus world records in freshwater line class and fly rod line class categories. These include the world records for coho salmon, pumpkinseed and greater redhorse, and the state records for brown trout, chinook salmon, and sheepshead. And the list keeps growing! Pan Fish Rainbow Trout Smallmouth Bass Smelt Long before sportfishing became Steelhead popular, weirs were built across the Oswego River at the base of the falls in Fulton. The weirs trapped eel, which were then smoked and shipped downstate for sale. At the peak of this industry in the late 19th century, about 1,000 barrels of smoked eel were shipped to New York City each year. Walleye 4 5 BOATING T here’s no end to our waterways — and no end to the ways you can enjoy them! Launch your own craft, take a fishing charter, or watch the magnificent commercial or naval ships and pleasure boats which arrive in port each summer! Canal Boating Regattas Canoeing Sailing DID YOU KNOW? The Oswego River was a major boat and shipbuilding center from the late 1700’s to the early 1900’s. The industry thrived in the 1800’s when sloops, schooners, tugboats, steamboats, and canalboats were built here. And today in the oldest drydock on Lake Ontario, the Oswego Maritime Foundation is building a new schooner, the OMS Ontario! Charter Boat Fishing Scuba Diving Commercial Ships Tall Ships Ice Sailing Water Skiing Jet Skiing White Water Rafting Kayaking There were over 160 shipwrecks along Oswego County’s Lake Ontario shoreline, making this an exciting place for scuba divers to explore. Motorboating Naval Ships Oswego County is host to New York State’s first diving preserve in the Great Lakes. The New York State David W. Mills Submerged Cultural Preserve and Dive Site features the shipwreck of the freighter David W. Mills and provides a mooring buoy to allow visiting scuba divers to easily find and access the site. The Port of Oswego each season welcomes ships from around the world as the first port of call on the Great Lakes. It handles nearly one million tons of cargo and is the oldest freshwater port in North America. From June 21-25, 2001, the port of Oswego will serve as the first port of call for the Tall Ships Challenge™ Great Lakes race series, organized by the American Sail Training Association. Tour majestic tall ships from around the world as they gather in Oswego Harbor before they race to Toronto in the first leg of the Great Lakes Challenge. Oswego’s rich maritime history, protected harbor and deep wharf make it a natural to host this event. A raised shoreline of parks and historic Fort Ontario’s ramparts will provide a panoramic view of the ships. The preserve is located four and one-half miles west of Oswego Harbor in an area called Ford Shoal. In August 1919, the 202-foot steamer ran aground on the shoal in dense smog created by Canadian forest fires. Efforts to free the ship failed, and it broke apart in a violent storm. Today, divers can explore the wreck’s many attractions, including the intact keel and 11-foot propeller, engine, port and starboard hulls, boiler, winch and anchor. The site is free of penetration areas and appropriate for beginner divers. Resting in 12 to 25 feet of water, the bright natural light, remarkable visibility, and abundant wildlife provide excellent opportunities for photographers. The Oswego River is part of the NYS Canal System, successor to the historic Erie Canal, once the principal route of access to the interior of the North American continent. The Oswego Canal section was completed in 1828. The Oswego River is one of the few rivers in the United States that flows north. Oswego County has 47.2 miles of shoreline along Lake Ontario and Oneida Lake. The New York State Canal travels through the middle of Oneida Lake, connecting Sylvan Beach and Brewerton. 6 7 Great Lake Ontario is the 14th largest freshwater lake in the world. GREAT OUTDOORS I t doesn’t matter if you’re on a sunny beach or a snowy trail, visiting the Salmon River Greenway or sleeping in a real yurt! Year-round, there’s always more to do, more to see, and more to experience in our Great Outdoors! Beaches Bicycling Bird Watching Camping Cross-Country Skiing Dog Sledding Fall Foliage Farm Tours and Markets Golf Courses Hiking Hunting Nature Centers Snowmobiling Swimming Wildlife DID YOU KNOW? Oswego County’s sunsets are regarded by many as the most beautiful in the world. Derby Hilll attracts tens of thousands of migratory birds each spring and is one of the most important viewing spots for broad-winged hawks in the East. They rest as they migrate northward by gliding on air currents above the hills along Lake Ontario near Mexico Point. Northern Oswego County’s Tug Hill region is the ultimate winter playground, and receives more snowfall than anywhere else east of the Rocky Mountains—as much as 20 feet each year! Many thousands of acres of our great outdoors were once owned by Alexander Hamilton. The land was sold to pay off his debts following his fatal encounter with Aaron Burr. The Onondaga Indians used Oswego County as their hunting and fishing ground before the area was settled by Europeans. The Salmon River is so named, local legend says, because when early settlers first arrived here, you could walk across the river on the backs of the Atlantic Salmon when they made their annual fall migration. 8 9 ATTRACTIONS F rom the thrill of auto racing to the pleasure of dinner theater, you’ll find attractions galore to suit the tastes and budget of any family! The “Oswego Movement” influenced many other teaching colleges throughout the country. The Oneida Lake Fish Cultural Station is the first facility in North America to intensively rear large numbers of fingerling walleyes. The Ferris wheel at Thunder 10 11 Island was used in the popular movie “Big” which starred Tom Hanks. FESTIVALS & EVENTS W hether it’s the thunderous roar of the Oswego Speedway Fall Classic, the excitement of seeing spring migrating birds at the Bird Festival, the Tug Hill Tourathon’s frosty challenge, or the medley of tastes, sights, and sounds at Oswego’s Harborfest—you’ll find an exciting event happening somewhere in Oswego County any time of the year! The Oswego County Fair was first held in 1856. For many years it was held at Recreation Park in Fulton, then moved to Sandy Creek in 1920. Oswego’s Harborfest features fabulous fireworks by the worldfamous Grucci family, which has lit up the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Mall. Each year over 100,000 people enjoy the spectacular show over Oswego Harbor! And the next day, off historic Fort Ontario, thousands view the re-enactment by tall ships of a Lake Ontario naval engagement. The Sail Oswego Regatta is the largest such race in the area. About 60 boats, including boats and crews from Canada, compete in this race. The Annual Fly-In Breakfast at the Richland airport has been held for over 20 years.
