Dear Sensei, Coach, Athlete and Parent:
You are cordially invited to attend the 30th Anniversary Yoshida Cup
- Northwest Classic Karate Championship and Seminars on SaturdaySunday, March 19-20, 2016 being held at the Yoshida Event Center at Mt.
Hood Community College. This event is marked by its focus on traditional
karate, friendship, learning and great competition.
In addition to great seminars and demonstrations, the competition will
be raised to a new level with the addition of over 100 competitors and
coaches from Japan! The Gensei-ryu Karate-Do International Federation
led by Kiyohiko Tosa Sensei (former Japan National Team) and Shin Tsukii
Shihan of IKGA” will be bringing competitors and coaches to participate.
Tosa Sensei and Tsukii Shihan will also be teaching a kumite seminar on
March 19, 2016 along with our list of seminars of the highest level.
Having taught Karate-do in the US for 45 years, helping lead USA Karate’s USOC National
Governing Body, and officiating at the World Championships, I greatly appreciate the dedication
and pride that athletes, coaches, and officials have in preparing and participating in competition
and camaraderie that it brings. This will be a weekend that will leave positive memories of great
competition and the ability to train and compete with the highest caliber of karate-ka. Please join
us as a participant, official, volunteer, spectator and/or supporter.
We welcome and appreciate all officials with any level of USA Karate certification and those
who are seeking familiarity with USA Karate / WKF rules. Attire for referees and judges will be as
provided in USA Karate regulations. Modified USA Karate rules will be used. Seminars will begin
at 9:00 am on Saturday, March 19th, 2016. There will be a meeting for officials at 8:15 AM on
Sunday, March 20th and competition will begin promptly at 9:00 am.
Coaches who plan to be on the competition floor MUST ATTEND the Coaches Briefing at 8:15
covering basic ring etiquette and receive their credentials unless you have an annual pass issued
by Coach Casey Mills - [email protected]. Coaches will be expected to abide by all rules
specified by the NW Classic and to sign a code of conduct. Anyone without proper credentials
and attire will not be allowed to coach from the competition floor.

KOU MATSUHISA SENSEI - THE SCORPION (KICK) KING
Four times All-Japan Champion, individual and team fighter for Japan at World Karate Championships with 3
bronze medals, Asian Games medalist, and Premier League gold medalist amongst many accomplishments.
Matsuhisa Sensei has established himself not just as a successful fighter but as an analytical and expert coach
and trainer that are reflected in his series of training videos produced by the JKF and Champ video. His first
time to Oregon and the Yoshida Cup should prove to be a valuable opportunity for all students from beginner
to sensei to take advantage of this great opportunity!
SHIN TSUKII SHIHAN
Vice-Chairman of Japan Karate-do Gojukai Association. Former National Team Coach for the Philippine National
Karate Team. Tsukii Sensei now is the consultant of Adidas Budo Mart Japan (BMJ) as well as the commentator and
consultant of Champ, the authorized video of the World Karate Federation (WKF) and Japan Karatedo Federation
(JKF) and President of World Karate Academy. He is known as “Expert of the Match” with several training DVDs
with Champ video and teaches seminars around Japan and the world. His seminar at last year’s Yoshida Cup
was a great success, providing specific drills, insight and strategies for competition, not just a “work-out”!
KIYOHIKO TOSA SENSEI
Kiyohiko Tosa Sensei is the first son of Kunihiko Tosa, founder and Presient of Genseiryu Butokukai, Gensei Ryu
Karate-do International Federdation (GKIF) in 1962. Tosa Sensei was a several time fighter on the Japan National Team
(JKF), earning an Individual Bronze at the 4th Asian Championships and Team Gold at 5th Asian Championships,
and on the Japan’s Team Kumite squad for 15th World Championships in Munich. He travels around the world
representing the GKIF organization and is current Permanent Director and Vice-Secretary General and designated
as successor for GKIF. He spends much time and energy with “Say Oss, Save Japan Through Karate” movement
that raises funds to assist the victims of the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami, that still is in a state of recovery.
TOMOHIRO ARASHIRO SHIHAN
Tomohiro Arashiro Shihan, Hachidan, Kyoshi, and Pan American Chief Instructor for Okinawa Ryuei ryu Karate-Do
Association has been training and teaching for almost 50 years. From Nago City, Okinawa, Japan, he began his
journey with Nakaima Kenko, grandson of Ryuei Ryu founder Nakaima Norisato. In 1979, after a degree in Physical
Education at Chukyo University in Nagoya City, Aichi, Japan, Arashiro Shihan and his friend Kuniyoshi Tsutomu
agreed to immigrate to the United States to teach Ryuei Ryu karate and kobudo. Their fledgling group expanded
from informal gatherings in a park in San Diego, to sessions at local recreation centers and VFW halls, to a formal
dojo in 1984.

Shihan Toshihiro Oshiro, Chief Instructor, has actively studied Okinawan martial arts for over forty years. He has
been teaching in the United States since arriving here in 1979. He had the opportunity to learn karate and kobujutsu
from many masters of Okinawan martial arts, including Sensei Shoshin Nagamine, Sensei Chogi Kishaba, Sensei
Masao Shima, and Sensei Seigi Nakamura. Shihan Oshiro is considered a top authority on Ryukyu martial arts, and
frequently travels nationally and internationally to teach Okinawan karate and kobudo. He has published numerous
articles and interviews in martial arts publications in Japan, Europe and the U.S.

This course will provide an excellent opportunity for all participants to raise their level of knowledge and skill in
WKF style Kumite and Kata Competition. Instruction will be provided in the areas of Refereeing, Judging, and
Scorekeeping. The course will consist of lecture, written examination, practical training, and practical examination.

In consideration of being allowed to participate in any way in the USA National Karate-do Federation athletics/sports program, and related
events and activities, the undersigned:
1. Agrees that prior to participating, they (if under 18 Parent or Guardian) will inspect the facilities and equipment to be used, and if the participant
and or Parent or Guardian, believes anything is unsafe, they will immediately advise their coach or supervisor or USA National Karate-do
Federation or Japan Karate Federation Northwest personnel of such condition(s) and refuse to participate.
2. Acknowledge and fully understand that each participant will be engaging in activities that involve risk of serious injury, including permanent
disability and death, and severe social and economic losses which might result not only from their own actions, inactions or negligence but the
actions, inactions or negligence of others, the rules of play, or the condition of the premises or of any equipment used. Further, that there may
be other risks not known to us or not reasonably foreseeable at this time. Assume all the foregoing risks and accept personal responsibility
for the damages following such injury, permanent disability or death.
3. Release, waive, discharge and covenant not to sue the USA National Karate-do Federation (USANKF), Mount Hood Community College
(MHCC), JKF of Oregon Karate, Inc. (JKFOK), Japan Karate Federation Northwest (JKFNW), its officers, its affiliated clubs, regional sports
organizations, their respective administrators, directors, agents, coaches and other employees of the organization, other participants, sponsoring
agencies, sponsors, advertisers, and if applicable, owners and lessees of premises used to conduct the event, all of which are hereinafter referred
to as “releasees” from any and all liability to each of the undersigned, his or her heirs and next of kin for any and all claims, demands, losses or
damages on account of injury including death or damage to property, caused or alleged to be caused in whole or in part by the negligence of
the releasee or otherwise.
4. All entries are final, no refunds will he given. I fully understand that any medical treatment given will be of a first aid treatment type only. I
consent that any pictures furnished by me or any pictures taken of me in connection with the Tournament can be used for publicity, promotion
or television showing now or in the future, and I waive compensation in regard thereto. All participants in any event or class in this Tournament
is by permission only. The Director or his authorized agent(s) reserve the right to refuse entry to any person, school, team or club.
5. PLEASE NOTE: All athletes must be covered by health or medical insurance in order to compete. Participant Secondary Medical Insurance
is included as a benefit of USA-NKF annual membership. Non member registration fee includes a one-day membership to the USA-NKF,
which includes Secondary Medical Insurance coverage for the day of the tournament.
6. Statement of Health. By my and/or Parent/Guardian’s signature below I confirm that I am in sound health and there is no reason why I
