The Ceremony
Book the Church
At this point, it must be assumed that you have been able to choose a wedding day that is convenient
for the church/synagogue of your choice and for the reception facilities that you prefer.
Check on the following:
1. Does the church/synagogue have any special
rules or traditions that you should know
about? Can you write your vows, personalize
your ceremony? What are the parameters?
6. If your ceremony is to be held somewhere
other than a church/synagogue (a hotel for
instance), what are your obligations to the
officiant?
2. What will be the time limitations on your
wedding day? Is there a ceremony preceding
or following yours? This should be checked
again, two weeks prior to your wedding
date.
7. Is it acceptable to tape record, video or to
take flash pictures of the ceremony? Are
there facilities for this?
3. Is there a lounge or other setting suitable
for photographs? Is there a rest area where
other members of your party can relax,
should there be some unforeseen delay?
4. Who will be your musician? Are you allowed
to provide your own musician? Soloist?
Music selections?
8. Aisle runners and length of aisle – what is
available and do you wish to use them?
9. Where are the flowers to be positioned?
What is the best time for them to be
delivered? Are there candelabras, candles,
unity stand available?
10. Are there to be any special seating
arrangements for close family members and
friends? How is this to be handled?
5. What kind of monetary obligations are there?
Are you expected to pay for wedding ceremony
services, or is a donation more traditional?
Once you have the answers to these questions, make a note of them. WRITE THEM DOWN. They
will be used and discussed later with your ceremony co-ordinator.

Reception
Ideas
•
Alternatives to rice throwing might include
doily cones filled with confetti, little bags of
bird seed or potpourri, or even bottles of blowbubbles for a festive touch that everyone can
have fun with and is gentle to the environment.
•
Help break the ice among guests by having
the best man announce at the beginning of
the meal that the bride and groom will only
kiss when a table or group stands up, singing a
verse of a song with the word “LOVE” in it.
•
An earth-friendly favor that also serves as a
balloon weight, decoration, and centerpiece all
in one is a tree seedling. The seedlings are 6-8
inches tall and can be decorated with mylar tissue, curling ribbon or tulle for the perfect party
favor that will live for years.
•
A lighter and more economical option for your
bar is a “White Bar,” with vodka, rum, champagne and wine for the base stock.
•
Treat your guests with little take-away bags
of sweets, cornucopia filled with flowers, or a
memento of the occasion.
•
FYI: With a domestic-brand beer, a half-barrel
keg contains 15.5 gallons, while the quarterbarrel contains 7.75 gallons. If you are using a
10-ounce cup, this totals to about 200 cups of
beer for a half-barrel, while the quarter-barrel
contains about 100 cups. (Imported beer kegs
are sized differently, with a half-barrel containing 10.7 gallons. You’ll also find that domestic
taps may not fit an imported keg.)
•
An alternative to seating name cards is to
number the tables, and provide each guest with
a personally addressed envelope that contains
their table number. Calligraphy adds an impressive touch, and guests will appreciate being
spared the search for their seats.
•
Make a card of all the married couples at the
reception and put in a basket. When people
are calling out for a kiss, pull a name out, that
couple has to show the new couple how they
have to kiss.
•
Having a hard time finding a reception hall?
More and more couples are choosing locations
that match their personalities. Boats, mansions, wineries and museums are among the
most popular.
•
An elegant option for cake cutting music is violins and flutes played in a semi-circle around
the newlyweds for a more romantic presentation than “The Bride Cuts the Cake.”
•
With the rising awareness of drinking and driving, more families and wedding parties are riding home safely and in style with limousines.
Elegant sedan cars instead of limousines may
help trim costs to enable more family members
the consideration of being provided a safe ride
home.
•
Carriages, vintage cars and Rolls-Royces are
popular for couples who want to make a statement on their wedding day.
•
For receptions, breakaway centerpieces are a
thoughtful touch. Individual bud vases, ornaments, or small plants all gathered in one basket can be taken home by guests as a memento.

Photography
Tips
A good time to start looking for a photographer and/or videographer is about nine to twelve
months in advance. Begin with recommendations from family and friends, looking through
albums for quality, style and formats that you like. Some criteria to keep in mind when interviewing photographers include:
____ Do the photos have a sharp, crisp quality?
____ Can they do retouching? What about special effects?
____ Will there be an extra charge for the proofs?
____ How long do they keep the negatives?
____ Does the quoted price include the finished album?
____ Do you feel confident with the person and feel that they will perform professionally,
inconspicuously and deliver great pictures?
____ Check for a mix of shots that are technically good.
____ Look for the emotion the photo projects.
____ Is the person showing you the photos the person who will be shooting your wedding?
____ Discuss costs. Work out a clear payment schedule, and obtain an itemized agreement
that lists everything included in the package and the total cost.
____ Can he arrive early to capture last-minute preparations, moments with family members, and the little events that make the day complete?
____ Will he design your album for you?

Wedding Dress
Shopping
Tips to Know Before You Go
DO take the page from the magazine with the picture of the dress you want into a
bridal shop. Note the magazine name and issue date on the page.
DON’T order a dress that you have not actually seen.
DO inquire about the alteration policy. Most stores charge for this because employing
an expert seamstress/tailor is an additional cost for them. Custom fitting is as important as the style of the gown.
DON’T rush to accept an all-inclusive price (free headpiece, petticoat), because the level of
service is often reduced by the amount of “extras” promised. Beware of incredible deals.
DO use a credit card when paying your deposit. If the dress is not delivered or there
are problems, the bank that issued the card can be contacted to issue a refund.
DON’T buy at a hotel sale unless the sponsor has a bridal shop in town. Traveling
shows are cash and carry. You have no way to reach the seller and no recourse if
you’re not happy with the dress.
DO set a budget. The cost of a wedding dress averages between $700-$800, but can
range from $300-$2,500. Know how much you are willing to spend, and be prepared to
buy if you find your dream dress. Most salons require a 50% non-refundable deposit.
DON’T bring children along. Take this time for yourself.
DO start looking early! Most stores recommend that you order your dress no less than
16 weeks before your wedding to allow time for custom ordering and fitting.
DON’T bring more than two bridesmaids or friends shopping with you. Too many
opinions will only cause confusion and controversy. Pick one trusted advisor.
DO check the manufacturer’s size charts for each dress with your measurements in
hand. Select the size closest to your largest measurement – it’s easier to take in a dress
than to enlarge it.

Tips for
The Toast
•
Think about what makes your relationship with the bride and
groom so special: the way you met, your shared interests. Is
there an anecdote or sentiment that sums it all up?
•
If you could make one wish of happiness for the newlywed
couple, what would it be?
•
Pick one message for the toast: love, commitment, relationships, friendship, etc.
•
Keep your message brief… 1-5 minutes should be sufficient.
•
Speak loudly and clearly, and remember that everyone in the
room shares your sentiments and feelings.
•
This is a chance to say some things that mean a lot to you
about people you care about.
•
Write a speech to practice, speak it out loud so you can hear
how it sounds. Practice it often to become familiar with it.
•
It’s the waiting that’s most likely to make you nervous, remind yourself of that and that this is the warmest audience
you will ever have.
•
While you’re sitting, repeat your first line to yourself so when
you get to your feet and the room goes silent you will be
ready with the line you’ve been repeating. You’ll find the rest
just follows.
Thank you
And Here
Choosing the perfect gift for your bridal party and
your betrothed can be a joyous experience if you keep
the recipients’ likes and personalities in mind as you
make your selections. Give a gift that you would like
to receive. Choose something that is meaningful and
unique. After all, these gifts are an expression of your
gratitude to the people who will gather together to
celebrate your special day. Make sure they’re packaged
beautifully, then present them with love. Your gifts
and memories of your wedding will be cherished for a
lifetime.
If you have a creative theme for your wedding, be creative with your gifts as well. Make the gift a keepsake
by monogramming it with your names and wedding
date.
Traditional gift suggestions include:
For Groom’s Attendants – Silver key chain, crystal
paper weight, engraved silver accessory box, sterling
engraved pocket knife, sterling money clip.
For Bride’s Attendants – Pearl earrings, crystal box
or vase, silver compact, crystal picture frame, jewelry
box, crystal ring holder, or a small crystal, china, or
silver clock.
Whatever the gift, be it traditional or an original piece
of art from your favorite artist, give it from the heart as
a token of love and appreciation.
