WHY CHOOSE TO BUILD WITH COROBRIK CLAY FACE BRICKS
Aesthetic Value
First Cost is Last Cost
The aesthetic attributes of fired clay, so pleasing to the eye, harmonise
with the built environment and natural surrounds, in a timeless way.
By building with genuine clay face bricks from Corobrik you will be saving
on the lifetime costs associated with the ongoing maintenance of other
finishes such as plaster and paint.
PROTECTION OF INVESTMENT
Durability The vitrification of clay under fired temperatures in the order
of 1000˚c -1200˚c affords a level of material durability able to withstand
the most testing environments. A well constructed wall using face bricks
from Corobrik will not be adversely affected by weather conditions and
the bricks will not deteriorate when subjected to the category of
exposure for which the bricks have been produced.
Strength of Clay Bricks
The strength of clay face bricks has long been the benchmark against
which other walling materials are compared. Properly constructed clay
face brick walls have an enviable reputation for providing strong, stable
and durable buildings.
Vermin Infestation
Brickwork correctly laid is devoid of cavities and crevices and therefore
impervious to vermin infestation.
Moisture penetration
Clay face bricks are well known for their ability to absorb water slowly and
to readily release moisture through evaporation, providing an excellent
barrier against the ingress of moisture into buildings thereby supporting
healthy living and working environments.

CLEANING OF CLAY BRICKWORK
The main area of unsightly staining arises from the operation of laying the
bricks in mortar and the related quality of workmanship and management
of the operation.
Preparation
General Precautions
Mortar and Mortar Smear:
Red Face Brickwork Only
Staining can mar the appearance of brickwork, but incorrect cleaning
techniques can cause permanent damage. Consequently, any proposed
method of cleaning should be tested in a small unobtrusive area and left
for at least a week to judge the results before the whole job is tackled. The
techniques given here are intended for do-it-yourself work in removing
relatively small areas of staining. A specialist contractor should be engaged
for cleaning large areas of brickwork.
It is preferable to use wooden scrapers and stiff fibre brushes to avoid
damaging the bricks; but where chemicals are to be used, the brickwork
should be thoroughly wetted with clean water to prevent it absorbing the
chemicals, and rinsed thoroughly with clean water afterwards. Adjacent
features such as metal windows and the area at the foot of the wall,
should be protected from splashing of the chemicals.
Remember to thoroughly wet the brickwork with clean water before
applying any chemical, and wash down with clean water afterwards.
1. Where possible, remove larger pieces of mortar with a wooden or nylon
scraper (not metal) which could damage the brickwork.
2. Wet the brickwork thoroughly with water, starting at the top and
working down.
3. Wash the wall down with a dilute solution of a proprietary mortar
cleaner, used as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Scrub brickwork using
a stiff fibre brush (not metal).
4. Never allow the mortar cleaner to dry on the brickwork. After scrubbing
for a few minutes the wall must be thoroughly washed with clean water to
remove the acid.
Many of the chemicals recommended are caustic, acidic or poisonous, so
care should be taken and protective clothing and goggles should be worn.
Volatile solvents should only be used indoors under conditions of good
ventilation. It is essential to identify the type of stain or deposit before any
cleaning operations are undertaken.
5. Cleaning should be done in relatively small areas at a time working from
the top to bottom.
Prevention is better than cure
Note: Light coloured face bricks (yellow, buff and cream colours) are often
susceptible to vanadium staining (see vanadium) and the above acid
cleaning process must not be used.
Cover face brickwork during building or renovating operations to prevent
mortar and paint stains.
6. Should the mortar stain still be visible once the brickwork has dried out,
steps 2 to 5 should be repeated.
CLAY BRICK PAVERS
For both beauty and durability underfoot, Corobrik hard burnt clay brick pavers offer aesthetic appeal as well as great
practicality. Every paver is originated with clay drawn from age old deposits, exuding its own earthy personality. Corobrik’s
distinctive range spans an extensive palette of colours and textures, offering an excellent spectrum for all tastes and lifestyles.
Champagne, Cederberg and Burgundy Paver
CLAY BRICK PAVING
BURGUNDY
THERE ARE 3 BASIC LAYING METHODS
• Laying pavers with an 8 - 10 mm cement mortar joint, which is called
cement grouted or rigid paving.
• Laying pavers with a 3 - 5 mm joint and brushing jointing sand
between them, which is known as sand grouted or flexible paving.
• Hybrid paving: rigid, mortar grouted pavers are laid on flexible support
layers.
– Joints filled with either wet slurry mortar mix or a dry mortar mix,
subsequently sprinkled with water.
– Care needs to be taken to ensure no mortar staining of the paving
surface occurs.
– Provision for expansion movement joints must be provided.
NOTE: Butt jointed paving invariably has less than the necessary joint
width which may cause the surface to act in a semi-rigid manner and
undesirable movements will occur under load, leading to spalling.
EDGE RESTRAINT
All brick paving must be restrained at the edges.
There are 3 basic methods:
• By using existing structures such as walls and kerbs.
• By the use of a precast concrete kerbstone or brick on edge.
• By fixing edging bricks in position with cement mortar.
Random Bond
BOND PATTERNS
• Herringbone bond is recommended for areas with vehicular traffic.
• Other bonds may be used for pedestrian traffic.
