A MESSAGE FROM PEF PRESIDENT

Happy Summer!
First and foremost, I thank and congratulate you
for supporting PEF in making our $2,000,000
pledge to the school
district for the 20092010 school year. What
an incredible community
this is – we raised our
goal by $500,000 and
you jumped on board and
made us successful. We
all worked hard across the
Peninsula to help protect
our outstanding schools
from being adversely impacted by the continuing
budget cuts from Sacramento. It took a huge effort
from all corners– from our amazing campus pledge
weeks to children manning lemonade stands, our
business partners, PTA’s, Boosters and our donors
bidding (and dancing) at Main Event, it worked!
And what a great school year it was for our school
district. 98% of our graduating seniors are on their
way to college. Our API scores remain some of the
highest in the state, and our students excel at all
levels. As you read through this newsletter, you will
see how the donations you made to PEF continue to
create opportunities at all our schools.
Unfortunately, we cannot dwell too long on our
successes. PVPUSD continues to face major budget cuts that threaten the quality of our schools, the
sizes of our classrooms, and the programs we believe
are an integral part of our children’s education. We
are once again asking the community to step up, to
invest in your children’s future. We have raised our
pledge to a new goal of $2.5 million for the 20102011 school year. We challenge ourselves, we challenge all of you to give, and give generously, to PEF.
Lastly, in early July, we said good-bye, good
luck and thank you to our Executive Director of
nine years, Andrea Sala, and said welcome to our
new Executive Director, Kathy Pape. Please stop
by our office and say hello to Kathy and the rest
of our talented staff.

PEF GOES PIER TO PIER
PEF is proud to participate in the Skechers Pier to Pier
Friendship Walk on Sunday, October 24th from Manhattan Beach pier to Hermosa Beach pier.
The second annual event will benefit local Education Foundations, including PV, Manhattan Beach,
Torrance, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and
El Segundo, as well as the Friendship Circle. The
Friendship Circle is a local nonprofit organization
formed to address the challenges facing families of
children with special needs by pairing them with local teenagers and creating a unique environment of
friendship and support.
Last year over 1,700 walkers enjoyed a beautiful
Sunday morning walk, and this year the goal is to
gather 3,000 walkers. PEF encourages every school
to create walking teams of teachers, administrators,
parents and students to come out and join the fun!
PEF receives a donation based on the number of
walkers from our community. Last year a check in the
amount of $7,500 was donated from the walk
to PEF, so let’s all
walk together for
our children.

BRIGHT SPOTS & NEWS FLASHES
SAM GOLDBERG AWARD WINNER
Kate Cocke and Andrea Sala present Malcolm Sharp with this
year’s Sam Goldberg Award. Named for PEF’s first president,
the Goldberg Award is an annual tribute to the community
member who best exemplifies extraordinary volunteer effort
benefiting the youth of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Sharp, a
PVPUSD School Board member and past PEF president, has
volunteered in nearly every capacity since his first son entered
the district as a kindergartener in 1990, in the classroom,
with computer systems, as well as tirelessly working for the
parcel tax and bond measures of the past 10 years that bring
in tens of millions in needed funds to the district. We greatly
appreciate Malcolm Sharp’s efforts for our kids and congratulate him on this well deserved award. PV schools receive over
225,000 hours of volunteer work every year.

DA VINCI & THE GIANT PEACH
This summer, hundreds of students across the peninsula
participated in a variety of Summer School programs,
including the Da Vinci Institute. Based upon the Seven
Principles of Learning by Leonardo da Vinci, the four
week institute held at Dapplegray Elementary School integrates math, science, art, writing, drama, music and dance
to enhance K-5 students’ problem solving, creative thinking, and self expression. Designed to inspire each child to
realize his or her full potential da Vinci is a unique opportunity for students to experience a different approach
to learning. The 2010 Institute culminated with a lively
performance of James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.

ADVENTURES IN ENGINEERING
The Palos Verdes Institute of Technology (PVIT) and Science-MathEngineering-Robotics-Technology (SMERT) are award-winning
programs, funded in part by PEF.
Walking into instructor Graham Robertson’s
“Principles of Engineering” summer school lab at PV
High is like being
swept up into a
tornado of activity.
On one side of the
workroom, teens
in the structural
engineering class
are putting the
final touches on
bridges they’ve
designed and built
out of balsa wood.
Each hopes their
bridge will win
the competition, scheduled for later that morning, by
bearing the heaviest load of water bottles.
In another section of the lab, students are working on computers that design 3-Dimensional shapes.
These shapes are then downloaded to a 3D printer
(purchased with funds from PEF) that produces a
plastic, working replica of the model, complete with
moving parts.
Robo-cars. Robo-students.
In another corner, several teams are testing their
prototype of a small robotic car. One group has programmed this car, through a series of maneuvers, to
write one of the student’s names onto a sheet of paper
with a strategically placed pen embedded in the frame
Elizabeth Tsai, a PVIT student in the regular school
year, is overflowing with enthusiasm. She enthusiastically talks about the 3D design she is working on, the
Digital Electronics trainer she programmed to display
her birthdate, the PVIT trip to Arizona State University last May, and her involvement in the Women in
Engineering Club.
That’s only just a few of their projects. “The sum-
mer school
program is
a wonderful
lead-in for new
freshmen interested in participating in the
PVIT or SMERT
programs in the
Fall. It’s a great
introduction to
the world of engineering,” said
Robertson. “The
robotic cars they
are designing and manufacturing have the navigation
capabilities of the original car we designed in 2004
for the DARPA race (a competition sponsored by The
Department of Defense’s agency to encourage development of new technology).”
ENGINEERED BY PEF
The PVIT program at Palos Verdes High School, and
the SMERT program at Peninsula High School, teach
a growing number of students how to be successful in
engineering and technology through a hands-on, innovative curriculum. Parent mentoring plays a big role
in the process, as well as support from PEF’s corporate
and individual donors.
One thing is clear as you survey the room: these
kids are not only learning at an extremely high level.
They’re having a blast. This is just another example of
PEF donated dollars at work in the classroom.

DIRECTOR KATHY PAPE.
As a long-time Palos Verdes
resident and parent, I could not
be more thrilled to be chosen as
PEF’s new Executive Director.
I am very much looking forward
to continuing the legacy of
this wonderful organization,
supporting our schools through
your generous donations, and
growing our pledge annually.
These are serious times. The school district continues
to face deep budget cuts that will affect our teachers,
our schools and our children’s education. We need your
help, more than ever, to keep our schools great.
Once again, PEF has raised its 2010/2011 pledge
to support the schools– this year, to $2.5 million,
including funding from our endowment– and we are
asking each family to donate as generously as possible.
While $500 per child is the suggested donation, all
gifts of any denomination will be gratefully accepted.
I am confident that with your support, we can reach
this goal and continue funding these wonderful programs in our schools:
• Small class sizes that promote student success
(Only PEF can raise money for teachers’ salaries)
• Choral and classroom music (elementary schools)
• World language instruction (elementary schools)
• Library/media aides (elementary schools)
• Safe school counselors (intermediate schools)
• College and academic counselors (high schools)
• Computer science/engineering and robotics
programs (PVIT and SMERT) (high schools)
