WHY PLAN FOR QUEER
SPACES?
•  Societal Attitudes:
•  Americans Opposed to Gay Marriage:
•  2001: 57% oppose, 35% support
•  2016: 55% support, 37% oppose
•  42% of LBGT youth say community in which they live is not accepting
of LGBT people.
•  1.6 to 2.8 million homeless youth in America, and 20-40% are estimated
to be LGBT.
•  People shunned from their families of origin begin to build families of
choice.
WHY PLAN FOR QUEER
SPACES?
•  Euclidian zoning is heteronormative, emphasizing singlefamily dwellings and the prevailing concept of traditional
family.
•  Zoning (land development regulations) affects not just the
type and size of uses, but hours of operation, proximity to
other activities, adult entertainment.
HOW DO WE PLAN FOR
QUEER SPACES?
•  Ensure land development regulations are not exclusionary,
prohibitive.
•  Key considerations:
•  Creating safe places.
•  Addressing how something is used versus how the traditional
definition of a use.
•  Not adopting cohabitation ordinances based on traditional definitions
of family.
•  Pursuing restroom standards in Florida Building Code and local
regulations that are not solely based on binary definitions of gender.
