The Clare Commission
gave their unanimous approval Monday evening to
set up new “Skate Park”
equipment at Brookwood
Athletic Field.
Plans to develop a skate
park in the City have been
in the works for about two
years.
In his agenda report,
Acting City Manager Steven Kingsbury said, “…a
small group of very motivated youth have been
actively raising funds over
the past couple of years
to purchase equipment
for a skate park. Concurrent with the fund raising
efforts and intentional
and focused effort has
been underway to find a
location for the skate park
equipment to be installed
that is convenient and safe
for those using it (preferably in a City Park) while
simultaneously not being
too closely located to any
residential area.”
Representing the
fundraiser, Jan Winter
was at the meeting to
answer questions and
outline plans the group
has. She said $23,000 has
been raised to pay for the
equipment and they have
found an American Ramp
Company layout at a cost
of $16,500.
She and Clare Parks
and Recreation Director
Joy Simmer outlined the
plans and their efforts
to find a permanent site
for the park. “We have
formed a joint venture
with the new Sports Complex planned on the south
side of the City,” Simmer
said.
Winter said they would
need an 80 by 200 foot
space for the equipment.
The site at Brookwood,

16 by 56 feet and would
only allow installation of a
portion of the new equipment. “But, it would show
everyone that we are working towards a skate park
and show our progress as
well as give the youngsters
a place to use temporarily,”
she said.
The space at Brookwood is currently leased
by the City.
Commissioners held
some discussion about
liability issues and safety.
The City is immune to
lawsuits, unless they show
a deliberate disregard for
safety. Other businesses
with space for skateboarding, do not have that
option and none have been
willing to allow skateboarders on their property,
Winter said. “This would
be a safer option.”
The Commission voted
unanimously 4-0 to approve the equipment purchase and allow a portion
of the skate park equipment to be installed on the
property. Commissioner
Gus Murphy was not present at the meeting.
In another matter, the
City approved the purchase
of new Ford Explorer
police vehicle. Total cost
of the fully equipped police vehicle is $37,910. A
USDA Rural Development
grant will pay $15,750 of
the cost. An old vehicle
will be sold and the net
cost to the city should not
be more than $21,160.55,
which was in the 2015-16
budget.
Other business at the
Clare City meeting included:
*Notification that the
Little Tobacco InterCounty Drain Board will
hold a meeting concerning
necessity on July 13.
*Approval of the slate
of candidates for the Michigan Municipal League
Workers’ Compensation
Fund board of Trustees
election.
*Payment of work completed at the new North
Industrial Park including
$190,298.06 to Dunigan
Brothers and $161,500 to
Maguire Iron.
*Some discussion on
problems with the Postal
Service regarding the
timely delivery of mail to
City residents.

The busy streets of
Downtown Clare and the
Clare City Park came to
life more than usual Friday,
July 3rd and went back in
time with the clickety-clack
sound of cowboy boots
hitting the pavement, the
pops of gun shots ringing
out and the smell of gun
powder drifting through
the air.
For a brief couple hours,
the memory of the Cowboys and Indians and the

and kicking again.
The Wild West Show,
aka, “Cowboy Weekend”
features look-alikes like
“John Wayne”-(Bob Selber), “Rooster Cogburn”(Ken Cagle), “The Lone
Ranger”-(Don Cagle),
“Matt Dillon”-(Gary
Cagle), “Tom Mix”-(Mike
Cagle), “Lash LaRue”(Bob Wallace), “Gabby
Hayes”-(Alan Bye), and
“Annie Oakley”-(Rachel
Schaffer).
Many of the look-alikes
have been in the business
of doing shows for years,
anywhere from 20-35 years
for most. “Gabby Hayes”
Alan Bye, has been doing
shoot-outs for 20 years,
“Lash LaRue” Bob Wallace
for 25 years, and the three
Cagle brothers from 23-35
years. One of the Cagle
brother’s sons “Tom Mix”
Mike Cagle, has also joined
into the group with his father. Ken Cagle’s late wife,
Mary Cagle, aka “Eulah
Goodnight” was also part
of the group, sadly she has
passed away.
“One day, I seen this
woman from across the
street, so, I walked up to
her dressed as Rooster
Cogburn, and introduced
myself, months later, we
were married” said Ken
Cagle.
“We do shows from
Michigan to Florida and
from Pennsylvania to
Texas” said Ken Cagle,
“Rooster Cogburn”.
Everywhere you looked in Clare last weekend, it was “cowboys and Indians.”

Over 40 kids from ages
1 through 9 that were able
to get registered, had a
chance to make their own
rodeo horse made out of
colorful pool noodles and
race them Friday in the
City Park, Downtown
Clare.
It was a fun filled day
for the Clare area kids to
let loose and enjoy the
beautiful summer day, surrounded by Cowboys and
Indians, a small petting zoo
including, baby rabbits, big
rabbits, baby goats, Guinea
pigs, a cow, horse, and
Donkeys from the Crossroads Donkey Rescue, plus
many games for the kids
throughout the park.
The kids had 2 hours
to make their pool noodle
horses, using decorations and around 1pm the
City Park became a race
way lined with Cowboys,
friends and family looking
and cheering on the tiny
participants racing.
Cowboy look-alikes
were there as well signing
pictured autographs for the
entire event. Gus Limbo
from Barryton, Michigan
also performed an Indian
dance before the kids rodeo
race began.

Vacations - way too short
Friend comes home,
finds cats burned alive
I hate to admit, but
I could easily wear the
label of “cat lover extraordinaire.” For most of my
life I have preferred dogs
over cats, but when we
rescued two cats from the
animal shelter, and made
them our office pets, I’ve
been converted to a cat
lover.
My cats are there to
greet me when I open the
office door at 7 a.m. in the
morning. They lay beside
my computer screen for
most of the day (if not in
my lap) and keep a watchful eye on customers and
employees as they work
throughout the day. They
are neither disruptive or
noisy. They never make
a mess and enjoy being
around people.
That’s why when I was
informed about what happened to a friend’s cats.
My mind swelled with
anger, and my heart with
pain.
It was yesterday. She
called, her voice stuttering, as she tried to
hold back tears. Some
cruel individual threw her
five cats in to a burning bonfire, roasting the
felines alive. You heard
it right. He didn’t bother
to shoot the cats, or feed
them poison. Instead he
held the cats, one by one
over burning embers until
all that was left was burnt
carcasses.
The friend has a pretty
good idea who the culprit
is. She thinks he was upset
with her husband who had
taken more time to repair
the guy’s car than he
thought was appropriate.
So his measure of revenge
was to torture the wife’s
five cats.
I happen to know the
guy, as well, and for sure
he has mental issues.
He is also well known
by area police agencies.
Despite having threatened
me about a few columns
I’ve written, I always
considered the guy harmless. I now have second
thoughts. It’s hard for me
to believe, he, or anyone,
could commit such a heinous act.
According to my friend,
he knew no one would be
home during the day, at
her house. Thus he made
his way over, helped himself to kindling and lighter
fluid, and decided to build
a nice bonfire. Something
snapped in this deranged
individual’s head, as he
then gathered the cats,
and one by one, held them
over the empty flame.

Bond issue
August 4th
On August 4, 2015,
Clare Public Schools’
voters will see a bond
proposal on their ballots
that if passed will generate $2.4 million for our
schools. This proposal
seeks to extend the current
millage for 11 years rather
than letting .73 mills drop
off as scheduled. The
money generated from a
successful bond will be
used to make much-needed
improvements and repairs
to our buildings and will
allow for projects that will
increase safety for our
students.
As the state continues
to struggle financially,
school districts must look
at all of the options that
are available for school
funding. We are truly
fortunate in Clare to have
a Board of Education who
is considering all options
to secure the district’s
financial future. Extending
our current millage at this
time will put the district
in a position in 8-10 years
to do another extension at
that time that will generate
approximately $14 million.
Some of the improvements and repairs that
will take place around
the district will include
projects in each of the
district’s buildings. Clare
Primary School projects
will include replacement
of the roof on the west
section of the lower floor
of the building, as well
as replacement of the
floor and lighting in the
gym. Exterior windows
will be replaced in the
Primary School and shades
will be added. Pioneer
The
makes us very cautious
when we let our little five
pound baby Peanut out
before bedtime.
She loves it there too
and gets excited when we
turn into the drive that
leads to our little “cabin
in the woods.” She’s a
bit too old now, but she
used to love walks in the
woods. There’s a trail that
winds around the property,
about a third of a mile, a
beautiful walk anytime,
but especially gorgeous in
the fall.
It is a wonderful place
to get away from it all,
but time always goes by
so fast when we are there.
Before we knew it the time
was winding to a close and
we had to head back home
again.
It’s not all leisure time
for us while we are up
there, or at least not for my
“workaholic” hubby. Jack
always has a list of things
to do while we are there.
This time it was mowing
our camping area (goodbye wildflowers), building
a new floor for our storage
shed, and washing the winter grime off both campers.
He got most of it done,
but we faced another little
“chore” that we seem to
face every time we arrive.
Our “bane” for the week
involved our efforts to
convince the “little squatters” we have been battling
since last year that the
camper is not a haven for
them. This time we trapped
11 field mice, bringing our
total this year to nearly 30!
We have tried just about
everything to discourage
those little critters, all to no
avail. Some of the remedies that haven’t worked
yet include steel wool and
poisoned foam packed into
every opening in and under
the camper that we could
find, peppermint oil, and
even fabric softener sheets
in drawers and cupboards.
Nothing seems to discourage them, but we keep
trying.
Everything they can
possibly get into is now
packed away in sealed
plastic bins each time we
leave. It makes setting up
“camp” take a little longer,
but it sure beats washing
everything before we can
use it again. Now when
we arrive, we just have to
disinfect every surface,
cupboard and drawer
before we settle in. Still,
while we are away, they
always seem to find something to destroy in their
search for nesting material.
This time it was a blanket
we forgot to pack away
and the fabric on Peanut’s
“doggy steps.”
Vacations are great, but
not always perfect.

High School will also
receive a new roof if this
bond is successful. This
proposal would also lead
to an update in educational
technology in all of the
buildings in the district as
we continue to promote
technology use.
Safety and security of
all of our Clare students
will continue to be a
focus for the Board and
Administration. With the
success of this bond, the
district plans to purchase 4
more buses to update our
transportation fleet. Temperature controls will be
installed at the Primary
School and classroom unit
ventilators will be replaced
– this project will serve to
improve temperature control in the classrooms. Another major focus at the
Primary School will be to
update our dated playground equipment. The
major project slated for
Clare Middle School is
installation of ductwork to
improve fresh air intake.
As Benjamin Franklin
said, “An investment in
knowledge pays the best
interest.” If you have any questions regarding projects
listed or the bond process,
please don’t hesitate to call
me at 989-386-9945.

cruelty towards animals.
In my newspaper career,
I have reported on all
sorts of sordid deeds by
deranged individuals who
get angry with their pets
or simply no longer want
to have them around. I’ve
covered people who shoot
their dogs, starve their
horses and apply various methods of torture to
animals.
It’s no fun to observe
a pit bull brutally beaten
in a dog fight. Nor is it
a joy to see a half dozen
horses so malnourished
they can’t even stand. I’ve
witnessed both, and have
a hard time understanding how people could be
so cruel to these living
creatures.
But quite honestly, this
takes the cake. I’ve never
covered a situation where
a sadistic individual has
burned someone’s pet
cat alive. In this case, it
wasn’t one, but five. It
now is before law enforcement authorities,
and hopefully if he is
found guilty, they toss this
guy in prison and throw
away the key. It may be
someone’s pets this time,
but next time it could be
someone’s husband or
wife, son or daughter.
They really are just too
short, aren’t they?
We just returned last
Sunday from our annual
summer getaway – a week
at our camper up near
Roscommon.
Although it added up
to ten lovely summer
days up there, it seems
like we were only away
a couple of days. Like
most vacations for us “old
folks,” we filled the days
with reading, leisurely
activities like visiting family, shopping trips, a few
visits to the Dairy Queen
and one to the “Custard
Cup” at Houghton Lake
and of course a cook out to
celebrate the Fourth with
family and friends.
Our camper and brother
Jim’s are both parked on
secluded family property
on the north side of a hill
and at the edge of fields
that give us a spectacular view of the “north
country.” If we are there
over the Fourth, like this
year, we can even see the
fireworks on the horizon in
Grayling (17 miles away
by road) and of course hear
them quite well too.
Sometimes we see deer
in the field in the early
morning hours when the
mist is rising. There are
always turkeys wandering around and at night
sometimes we can hear
the coyotes singing. One
evening, just after dusk we
both swore they were right
next to the camper! That

Dear Dr. Vanderbrook,
I first met you on September 30, 2006 and little did
I know I would be putting
myself and my husband in
the care of the most amazing
doctor I have ever known
in over 70 years. Our first
appointment, I was very
keenly alert to everything
you said and did because I
had just left the most horrific
physician that caused me to
panic every time I walked
into ANY medical facility,
even to visit a sick friend.
My heart rate and normally
below average blood pressure would skyrocket to
unbelievable numbers.
I chose to interview you
because you were Dutch
and being raised by a Dutch
father and within a huge
Dutch family, I learned and
believed that whenever a
Dutchman spoke, it was
truth and factual. As my dad
used to say, “Do you want
the truth – or do you want
me to make you feel good?”
You looked me in the eye,
asked me a multitude of
questions, listened to me and
HEARD me. You never got
that glazed look that people
get when they are mentally
distracted or bored. I soon
learned that our appointments were not only informative but fun! (Remember
when my appointment was
your last of the day and after
the yearly look-see comparisons, you stood up and asked
me to follow you down the
hall to your office? You sat
down to play a song on your
computer from the ‘40s
because you wanted to know
the words. Your nurse came
looking when she heard me
singing and you laughing
because she thought I had
“skipped”.)
When I was forced to
abandon using Lipitor due
to serious side effects and
then 6 months later was so
excited to show me that I
didn’t need Lipitor anymore because, along with
low blood pressure and the
fact my body automatically
raised my HDL to counteract
the rising LDL, informed
me my chances of stroke or
heart attack was about 9%?
You told me then how you
encourage and praise patients
who choose to maintain good
health with diet, healthy
fresh foods, exercise rather
than take drugs. How just
everyday activities became
a topic of conversation,
such as you told me you and
your wife learned that, as
the old saying goes, “Stolen
fruit is never sweet” as you
discovered on a weekend trip
north. You saw an apple tree
growing along the roadside
that had such gorgeous
fruit but when you stopped
and picked one, you soon
learned that as beautiful as
again. I remember vividly,
that as we walked opposite
ways down the hall, you
called out to me to have a
good Thanksgiving and then
said, “…don’t forget to send
me one of your Christmas
cards”. It is as if I have lost
a beloved family member, or
dear friend.
You have a God-given
talent for loving people. Taking care of them. Striving to
give each one of us the most
precious gift one human
can give to another. LIFE!!
Please, I beg you, do not
abandon that wonderful way
you have of making us, your
patients, cherish ourselves
the way that you cherish us.
I jokingly told you once,
many years ago, that if you
ever left Clare, you would
have the burden of dragging
me everywhere you go because I would have a death
grip on your ankles.
Just so you know, if you
do decide to open your own
private practice, my husband
Jean and I are in the Clare
phone directory. (Can I let
go of your ankle now?)

Dr. Vanderbrook - I will miss him
To the Editor:
From the beginning of his
nine year tenure as a physician at Mid Michigan Physicians, Clare, I was a patient
of Dr. Robert Vanderbrook
and I must say he was one of
the best General Physicians
I have had the pleasure of
being a patient of during my
adult life of 67 years. I shall
surely miss him. He was
always kind and courteous to
me. He took time with me, always answered my questions

my medical issues. When I
was asked by Mid Michigan

Ashamed of our roads
Dear Editor,
It seems that if you
want people to “Travel

or our vehicles won’t last
long enough for us to go
anywhere.
We’ve had to work all
our lives & received no
retirement pensions and
free vehicles use that most
Government workers
receive, yet you expect us
to pass a law that the WE
will pay to have the roads
fixed. Shouldn’t that have
been foreseen by Government workers long before
their benefits?
Just returning from
a road trip to/from California, I was never so
ashamed of Michigan and
the condition of our roads!
People all across the
Country asked & couldn’t
understand why anyone
would want to live here.

completing the survey both

you may be able to fill one

Planning old fashioned Camp Meeting
Dear Editor:
Please allow us to
introduce ourselves. Our
names are Lance and
Jeanie Sprague and we live
at 310 W. Larch Road, in
the beautiful countryside
of Harrison, Michigan.
Since giving our hearts to
the Lord in 2002, we have
been asking God to use us
in ways that would allow
us to be of service to Him
and benefit His Kingdom.
For the past couple of
years we have extended
ourselves in discipleship
by hosting an old fashioned
Revival Camp Meeting
on our beautiful property.
Please make not that this
event is not intended to
represent any one denomination, but instead, an
opportunity for all Christians to come together and
refresh each other for the
glory of God, as well as
share His love with those
who may not know him.
Our great Country was
founded on God and has
been so greatly blessed by
Him, however over the past
years a few have decided
that we can do without
Him. Because of this,
God’s hand of protection
is moving away from the
United States. God states
in His Word, “If you repent
and turn back to me, I will
bless you again”. God is
merciful and slow to anger,
but He will not sit back
forever!
We are asking for your
support through prayer as
well as announcing this
fantastic event to your congregation and community.
Listed below is this
year’s itinerary for the
2015 Revival Camp Meeting. Please be sure to save
the dates on your calendar.
It will be a great time in the
Lord!

New barn adds to area landscape
Morning of July 5, 2015
By Steve Landon
The Fourth of July is a
chance to get out and celebrate America’s birthday
with parades, picnics, barbeques and more, however
for many members of the
local Amish community
July 4, 2015 was a work
day.
Bright and early Saturday morning an army
of buggies and Amish
craftsmen descended upon
a farm on Grass Lake Road
southeast of Clare to raise
a barn.
Hitting the long task at
hand like a finely turned
team, young and old
worked from dawn to dusk
to get the job done converting a former swine farm
into a dairy operation. At
8:00 a.m. a concrete lower
level with its massive floor
was all that stood. By the
end of the work day a full
size barn complete with
finished roof stood proudly
in the setting sun awaiting finishing touches. A
structure just a bit to the
east of the main barn was
also built.
Thanks to another group
of dedicated hard working Amish the area has a
beautiful old style barn on
the rural landscape to view
for generations to come.

Reflections
The brief note I received
from a friend thanking me
for calling revealed the
depth of his depression.
Knowing he was going
through a difficult experience, I had called to ask
how he was holding up and
to encourage him. “Sometimes you feel so alone and
wonder if anyone cares,”
his note read.
Perhaps you feel alone
and depressed.
If so, remember many
feel as you do today.
And for a variety of
reasons.
Negative influences impact us daily. We experience physical and emotional pain, face conflicts
with disagreeable people,
receive unwanted bills
in the mail and, even on
drives to relax, pass hospitals and cemeteries, those
silent reminders that all is
not well with the world.
As I approached the
check-out counter, the
clerk’s name tag caught
my eye. “Faith,” it read,
introducing its bearer to
each customer who came
through the line.
“What a nice name!” I
exclaimed. “Faith makes
heaven sure.”
“My parents gave me a
hard name to live by,” she
replied.
“Are you going through
True Faith
By Roger Campbell Ministries
a tough time?” I asked.
“Oh, yes!” she said.
Handing her some faith
building reading, I left this
troubled woman with the
most encouraging words
I know: “Remember God
loves you.” I wanted her
to know that our loving
Lord has assured those who
trust Him they will never
be alone.
Faith needed faith.
But the faith that lifts
from depression and drives
away loneliness does not
rest in itself. Instead it is
anchored securely in God.
Even strong faith would be
worthless if the object of
our faith were not strong.
Standing on the bank
of the storied Mississippi,
I looked up at the break
in the bridge that spanned
the river not far away. A
heavy truck had been too
much for the structure and
a section of it had given
way just after the fortunate
truck driver had crossed
safely to the other side.
There had been nothing
wrong with the driver’s
faith, for he had risked
all in making that crossing. But the bridge was
not worthy of his faith.
Though he had escaped
with his life, the bridge was
broken by the load placed
on it.
Our Lord is unlike that

bridge. He will not fail.
Great faith is built on the
conviction that God loves
us, hears our prayers and is
able to do anything. Too
many of us say we believe
this but do not act on it.
A.W. Tozer, the late prolific
author of Christian classics
called this “pseudo faith,”
writing: “Pseudo faith
always arranges a way out
to serve in case God fails
it. Real faith knows only
one way and gladly allows
itself to be stripped of
makeshift substitutes. For
true faith, it is either God
or total collapse. And not
since Adam first stood up
on earth has God failed a
single man or woman who
trusted Him.”
True faith must be more
than a name or a profes-
sion. It must exist in the
heart!

of a fluid heated in the device, typically water or a mixture of water and antifreeze.
3.
4.

a.
The wood stove or furnace unit shall be located a minimum of 10 feet
from all property lines in all districts.
b.

c.
The unit shall not be located where smoke will create a nuisance to neighboring properties. If smoke becomes a nuisance, the chimney will have to extend

MAKE EVERY
SHOT A LAYUP
In the past I have
volunteered as a basketball coach for some kids
recreational teams. If you
asked those players what
I taught them my guess
would be most would say
that I told them to use the
backboard on layups. It
was so strongly stressed
that during practice they
had to run laps if they
did not use the backboard
even if they made the shot.
I knew using the backboard put the odds in their
favor for making it in the
basket. Could they make it
without using the backboard? Absolutely. Would
they make every shot? No,
but over the course of the
season I knew they had a
better chance of scoring
more points by using the
backboard approach.
The same scenario is
true when we are talking
about proper body alignment for your golf swing.
You can hit good shots
when the body is aligned
incorrectly but you will
hit a higher percentage
of good shots when you
are aligned the right way.
When your body is lined
up right or left you are
forced to make compensations in your swing to hit
the ball on target. Eliminate the compensations by
working on your alignment. Improve alignment
by placing clubs on the
ground while on the range.
Place one club between
your feet and the ball and
the other outside the ball.
The inside club should be
pointing slightly left of
your target and the outside
club slightly right. The
clubs should be parallel to
one another. Set up with
your clubhead pointed
directly at the target and
your feet, hip, and shoulders parallel to the clubs
on the ground. This is
proper alignment. Often
times it looks to the player
that they are aimed far to
the right or left. The players alignment will improve
as they get used to what
lined up correctly looks
like.
Proper alignment is vital
if you want to be a consistent golfer. Professional
golfers work diligently
on this part of the game.
They know the hard work
they have put into their
swings is in vain without
being lined up right. Make
it a goal for yourself to
improve this part of your
game. Use the backboard
and may the odds be in
your favor.
