Month to celebrate C.R.
BULLETIN NO. 8
FALL SEMESTER
SEPTEMBER 16, 2015
A CIVIC WEEK TO REMEMBER!
MONDAY
A picture is worth a thousand words! Below, find daily photos and on our Facebook page an album of the
week. Thank you to the teachers responsible for the celebrations: Elementary: Eliane Brenes, Pepita
Callís, Isabel Chavarría, Lidia Coto, Verónica Gross and Daniela Vargas-Love. In Secondary, the social
studies department led by Luis Mora, especially in charge of the referendum proposed by Dina Salazar.
In the Judiciary Branch: Ileana Jiménez, Patricia Prats, Pamela Ramírez, Eduardo Ramírez and Álvaro
Soto. Valeria Soto (11A) and Marianne De Bedout (11B) were in charge of the Executive and Legislative
branches, respectively. Dana Lewis directed the dances and Roberto Chaves is always in charge of the
excellent performance of flag wavers. What a week full of patriotic fervor! The integration of students,
parents, and staff was amazing! See pictures of Monday’s elementary assembly including the delightful
Caribbean band; Tuesday’s oxcart rides, Wednesday’s Talent Show full of color, variety, and creativity,
and to close with the debate on the referendum in Sala Magna digitally connected with the library. On
Thursday all of us in Blue Valley received a delicious typical breakfast. Next, on Friday, the closing
assembly in elementary was as good as the opening one, which seemed impossible to surpass. Next,
on Friday the adults voted on the referendum question "Do you agree with installing air conditioning in
the Sala Magna?" to conclude on Monday with the vote of the students and the feast at sunset: lantern
parade, drums presiding, 11 B typical dances and “bombas,” and the flag bearers with magnificent
routines. THE YES VOTE WON with a total of 74.05% of the votes; 24.96% of the community did not
find air conditioning indispensable. An abstentionism of 50.07% will serve as an example for civic
instruction. This civic week shall be recorded in the history of Blue Valley and in memory of all those who
participated as the best ever!

MINIONS 2015
“Minions and Minions” of talents were discovered in our spectacular
Talent Show to celebrate Children’s Day last Wednesday. A sincere
thank-you to the committee for having created an unforgettable
display of talent in our school. What a show! Thank you Ms. AnaCa,
Ms. Kelso, Ms. Piza, Ms. Artiñano, and Nani, and hats off to the
entertainers Ms. Bolton, Ms. Kwiatkoski, and Mr. Homan and all our
minions! A great Habit of Mind in action: Innovating, creating, and
imagining.
READING FOR COMPREHENSION OLYMPIAD
Three of our students were called to the podium in the Progrentis category (avanced).
Out of 12 awards for 250 contestants from 25 schools, Javier Sánchez, 5B-2, took a third
place, Gabriela Moreno, 6A, second place, and Emmanuel González, 8A, a third place.
¡Congratulations for the awards for such an excellent skill!
END OF THE BIMESTER, REPORT CARD DAY AND BREAK
First quarter ends Tuesday, September 22nd; report cards distributed Friday 25th, 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Fall
break will be from September 28th to October 2nd.
ACADEMIC NEWS
At Blue Valley we make students’ learning visible. Fifth B students discovered the
difference between plant and animal cells observing them in a microscope that allowed
them to use their personal mobile devices to take pictures. This permitted a
more detailed observation and encouraged collaboration among students.
Documenting their discoveries in writing, comparing and contrasting plant and
animal cells, enabled critical thinking and Ms. María Lourdes Artiñano could
address misconceptions and highlight relevant conclusions. Classroom tasks
and technology coexist to support student centered learning.
CRI-MUN 2015
What a show of enthusiasm, work, and knowledge by
our youngsters this weekend at the Radisson Hotel!
With the participation of 24 schools and several
universities, we saw students become delegates from
many countries of the world, commenting and looking
for solutions to real events, simulating a United
Nations in our world. Thanks to five young dreamers
who began this idea in October of last year: Ricardo
Padilla, Ricardo Solano, Romina Rodas, Antonio
Maklouf and Verónica Mesalles, the last two
continuing as General Secretaries. It is the first time
that an alliance with other schools was achieved at a
high-level conference with the participation of young
students from rural areas of Costa Rica. We thank the
families who hosted the students who came from afar
to share their knowledge and ideas for a better life in
this world. Thanks, Arick Dickerman, for mentoring our
youth, side by side with them!
IBERO-AMERICAN
MATHEMATICS
OLYMPICS
Students Marco Cabrera (11A) and Ignacio
Blanco (11B) participated in the qualifying
rounds for the Ibero-American Mathematics
Olympics, to be held in November in Puerto
Rico. Marco classified as number one in
the delegation that will represent Costa
Rica. Congratulations to both!

LAST WEEK’S WOWS
• Valentina Durán, 5A, demonstrated a very important Habit of Mind:
Thinking and communicating with clarity and precision. When Ms.
Zelaya noticed fifth graders playing on the field at a time when they
were supposed to be in the “canchita”, she approached them to
remind them. At that moment, Valentina stood next to her and
reminded them in a positive and friendly way that they had the other
soccer field to play. She definitely set an example for all!
• Santiago Van der Putten, 5B-1, and Manrique Mora, 5B1, in a very
empathetic way, were trying to help a boy who was crying, upset
because they had made a penalty on him. Ms. Coto was walking by and was very pleased to see
them solve the problem in a peaceful and fair play manner. Great job!
IB ART EXHIBIT
Six of our students, Phillip Harrington, Alexa Kopper, Tatiana López, Melania Moreno.
Florencia Quirce and Daniela Sancho, will exhibit their artwork on Wednesday,
September 23rd at 6:00 pm in the Arts and Science Building. See you there! Invitation in
Attachments.
ALZHEIMER MONTH
Students can pay ¢400 to wear their favorite sports t-shirt tomorrow to raise funds for the Alzheimer
foundation. They have dedicated this month to support people affected by this disease.
THE LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd
On Tuesday, September 22nd, the library will be closed so our librarians can participate in a workshop
with U.S. librarian Jennifer Stacy at the Anglo American School. On Friday the 25th, Ms. Stacy will visit
BVS to observe some classes and provide feedback.
