Congratulations to Sinead Russell and her new 200 IM record in the 200 IM.
On the coaching side, congratulations to John Grootveld, TSC head coach for taking a position as a
High Performance Sport Director for the CSC-Ontario. John has built one of the strongest clubs from
“bottom to top” in the country. I had the pleasure of coaching John way back in 1993 at the Canada
Games and then coaching along side with him at the 2007 Pan Am Games. John has consistently put
swimmers on every level of the national program. As we congratulate him on his new position, swimming
will miss his direct contribution through is coaching but we look forward to him continue to help Ontario
swimming in his new role.
The journey continues…The last weekend of March I attended the NEOR LTT camp held at the Forces
Base in North Bay—home of CT 33. The camp had 4 water sessions, several Dry sessions including a
busy day utilizing the Ontario Dry land program designed by Steve Topham (CSC-O), a deadly spin bike
class and a fun & challenging station of wall climbing. Great job by the coaches Tracy McCartney,
Rodney Thomas, Dean Henze, Pierre Simard, Dan Stratton, Nancy Day, and Rick Jutti.
Christy Yaremczuk attended the Western Region LTT and Fundamentals at the University of Guelph the
same weekend. Many thanks to Don and Kendra Burton, Hans Wittola, Joni Marten-Sanders and
Kristy Lyon for their direction and organization for this camp.
The second Train to Compete Camp took place with 17 swimmers at McMaster University. This was
also the launch of the first camp integrated with the NCCP Competitive Development coach series. The
weekend focused on the following:
o Understanding and Applying Personal Responsibility
o Balance (Invisible Training and Well Being)
o Train with Purpose (Swim with Purpose) “it’s not necessarily what the practice is…it’s what you do with
the practice” “Continually improve your practice times”
o Value kicking as one of the key foundations to High Performance Swimming
o Skill Development and Refinement (Stroke Efficiency—Pace Control—Start & Turn skills
o Key Performance Indicators (KPI) in Training
o Dry land; Conditioning and Flexibility components leads to your High Performance Capacity (Winning
Routines)
o Technical Focus (Stroke Length x Stroke Rate = Velocity Stroke Counting and Pace & Rhythm Control
– 3 R’s Range—Rhythm—Relaxation
o Have Fun!
Thanks to Mark Fellner and Christy Yaremczuk who facilitated the coaching portion, Kelly Steeves,
Anne Bell for the organization of the camp and with the help of the CSC-Ontario leaders Tim Sauve,
Trionne Moore, Rob Rupf and Steve Topham, the course proved to be a great learning experience.
Thanks to the coaches who attended with their swimmers and offered great assistance, Don Burton
GMAC, Hans Wittola GMAC, John McLeod NYAC and Victor Delac TSC. The second Com Dev series
takes place in October.

A week spent in the Ottawa area hopefully has opened up the doors and more opportunities. Pierre
Lafontaine and I were able to hold some practices at University of Ottawa and Carleton University. The
swimmers responded well and we look forward to do another week in the 2010-11 season. While I was in
Ottawa I visited Head coach Gord Emmerson of the Ernestown Barracudas (EBSC). EBSC has
always churned out swimmers reaching national team status. A steady stream of swimmers from novice
to national came through the doors. A visit to the Perth Stingrays and new head coach Rod Agar saw a
handful of senior swimmers training at various energy levels. A visit with Rob Eynon, John Hawes and
Claudia Cronin of the ROC at Carleton University along with Head coach Marie Anzai of GFSC and
her swimmers proved to be a good session focused on dolphin kicking off walls, value of kicking in the
stroke and doing all strokes well.
My mid month review ended with attending the Division 1’s in Nepean and Division 2’s in Brantford. I
talked with a few coaches from Division 3’s over the weekend, and all 3 Divisions although in different
parts of the province all shared the excitement, the thrill of performance and the satisfaction of
achievement. Glad you had fun!
