Sucker Day FestivalSeptember 27, 2014
The annual Sucker Day
Fe s t i v a l i n W e t u m k a
celebrates the city business
owners that were "suckered"
by a flim-flam man selling
tickets to a non-existent
circus. In the early 1950s, a
man named F. Bam Morrison
e n t e r e d We t u m k a a n d
persuaded residents to put
up the money to bring a
circus to town. Morrison
sold advance tickets while
citizens prepared for the
crowds with the purchase of
food, beverages and
souvenirs. The citizens of
Wetumka lined the streets on
the morning the circus
parade was scheduled to
march down Main Street.
Nothing happened.
Morrison had left the night
before with money in his
pocket and the citizens of the
town learned that they had
been swindled.
Instead of taking the swindle
to heart, Wetumka turned
disappointment into
amusement. Armed with the
food and decorations they
had prepared for the circus,
We t u m k a d e c i d e d t o
celebrate anyway. Sucker
Day was first observed in
1953. Come and join the
citizens of Wetumka as they
celebrate the day when local
residents wisely turned a
frown upside down, kicked
up their heels and let
disappointment slide away.
Today, the festival includes
arts and crafts, music and
various activities. Don't miss
the parade featuring antique
autos and tractors, horses
and riding clubs. The annual
Sucker Day poker run is a
popular attraction, so ride
i n t o We t u m ka o n y o u r
motorcycle and plan to
spend the day. Food will
range from burgers and hot
dogs to a variety of ethnic
dishes.

A Look inside Today’s Industry
INDUSTRY NEWS
Audit program offers path to continuous improvement
To achieve an industryleading environmental and
safety record, a company
must be willing to take a long,
hard look in the mirror on a
regular basis. If it likes what it
sees, great. But in many cases,
there can be blemishes.
The self-evaluation of
Environmental Health and
Safety (EHS) performance
throughout Devon is at the
heart of the company’s EHS
program. It is part of our
vision to be the premier
independent oil and natural
gas company in North
America.
Sweeping the Company
Our commitment to safety,
worker protection and the
environment is highlighted
by our companywide EHS
audit program. Under this
initiative, we focus a critical
eye on our own facilities and,
when necessary, we take
corrective action.
Since 2013, Devon has
conducted monthly safety
audits, each focusing on a
different Devon facility or
operating area. For example,
past audits have included
Devon’s exploration and
production operations and
gas processing facilities in
N e w M e x i c o , Te x a s ,
Wyoming and Canada.
The program also includes
special audits for potentially
elevated risk activities or for
the review of other Devon
programs and facilities.
For example, audits have
included contractor drilling
NOW HIRING!
o p e r a t i o n s , Fr a c Fo c u s
chemical disclosures and our
corporate offices in
Oklahoma City.
We also audit our contractors
because they often perform
our highest-risk jobs, and we
do not differentiate between
the safety of our employees
and our contractors. That is
why we include our
contractors in our safety
metrics, just as though they
are Devon employees.
Hand-Picked Teams
EHS audit teams consist of
four to nine Devon
employees. Each member is
hand selected for audits
based on their specific area of
ex p e r t i s e a n d t y p i c a l l y
include EHS professionals
and technical specialists from
our operating divisions.
Teams typically spend two
days on field inspections, one
day in field offices examining
records and another day to
discuss audit findings with
field leaders. Subsequent
follow-ups are made to
ensure corrective action is
taken in a timely way.
These audits are conducted
in addition to visits by state
and federal regulators, who
focus on regulations within
their jurisdictions, either
safety and health, or
environmental.
Critical to our Business
EHS performance is our
highest priority. Without it,
our ability to be a successful
business would be
diminished.
It is a focus because our
employees are our most
important asset, and we must
take extra measures to ensure
they are safe. We also are
committed to being a good
neighbor and a good
environmental steward. Our
EHS audit program helps us
ensure high performance in
all of these areas.

OU students intern at
MRHC pharmacy
Two pharmacy students who
completed a rotation at McAlester
Regional Health Center recently say
they came away with a better
understanding of their chosen
profession, and appreciated the
opportunity. But they also reached
the same conclusions: Pharmacists
are an integral part of a hospital
patient’s treatment team, and
constantly evolving medications
keep pharmacists on their toes.
Emily Ford, of Verdigris, and Erin
Miller, of Norman, are students of the
University of Oklahoma’s College of
Pharmacy and studied in McAlester
under Adjunct Professor Dr. Larry
Auld, MRHC pharmacy director.
Under his guidance, two or three
students come to the hospital each
year for clinical rotations.
“I have them learn how we receive,
control and distribute drugs,” Auld
said. “They spend the vast majority of
their time with the clinical pharmacist
on the floor.”
Both students reported learning that
pharmacists must be up to date on
their knowledge of medications, and
especially new drugs, to make the
best of their consultations with
doctors and the best decisions for
patients.
Miller noted that “new drugs are
constantly released and it’s the
pharmacist’s responsibility to know
about medications.”
The hospital employs four
pharmacists in addition to Auld, and
eight technicians.
Both students were impressed with
the level of professionalism at
MRHC, as well as the help offered by
staff members.
“Every single pharmacist I worked
with throughout my stay in McAlester
remembers what it was like to be a
student so … never expected more
out of me than I could handle,” Miller
said.
Ford appreciated the relationship she
saw between patients and MRHC
pharmacists.
“I (saw) a good example of this type of
relationship on my rotation” she said.
“The pharmacists would take the time
to review patients’ charts and counsel
them in their hospital rooms to make
sure they are receiving the best care
from all healthcare professionals
involved in their treatment.”
Both Ford and Miller have
connections to the McAlester area.
Ford’s aunt and uncle, Allen and
Nancy Sherman, are area residents.
So are Miller’s grandparents: Mickey

Care Unit.
Auld, an adjunct professor
through the OU
Experiential Teaching Program
for the School of
Pharmacy, graduated from OU
in 1981. He looks forward to the
time he gets to spend
helping students hone their skills.
“Pharmacy students remind us
that we are meant to be
lifelong learners,” Auld said, “and

“These grants promote
creativity and problemsolving efforts that benefit
farmers and ranchers and
protect our natural
resources," Vilsack said.
"They're critical in sparking
new ideas and techniques for
conservation on America's
private lands and improving
the environment."
The grants announced today
are funded through the
Environmental Quality
Incentives Program. Grantees
must work with producers
and forestland owners to
develop and demonstrate the
new technologies and
approaches. At least 50
percent of the total cost of
CIG projects must come from
non-federal matching funds,
including cash and in-kind
contributions provided by
the grant recipient.
Vilsack made the
announcement while visiting
a corn and soybean farm
owned by David and Tamara
Erickson and their sons,
Nicholas and Bradley. The
Ericksons have a five-year
Conservation Stewardship
Program contract with
USDA's Natural Resources
Conservation Service and
have also received technical
assistance from NRCS. The
Secretary saw soil
conservation practices
including "no till" and
grassed waterways to reduce
runoff. He viewed soil cores
which demonstrate the
benefits of efforts to improve
soil health.
The National Corn Growers
Association and the National
Association of Conservation
Districts, both involved with
conservation activities in
Illinois, are receiving grant
awards to demonstrate the
use of best management
practices such as
conservation tillage, cover
crops and advanced nutrient
management to address soil
health concerns. Almost half
of the grants announced
today support the agency's
priority of getting more

Deer Hunting Tip: Use
Baking Soda to Cover
Your Scent
Oklahoma Bargain Journal Online: http://www.weeklybargainjournal.com email:[email protected]
“Baking soda, the same stuff
that deodorizes the fridge, is
the key to my scent-control
system,” says Wisconsin’s
Tom VanDoorn, who’s taken
more than a dozen Pope and
Young bucks. Here’s his
routine:
Take a soda shower.
“The stuff can rub your skin
raw if you use it straight,”
cautions VanDoorn. “So mix
a few tablespoons with some
liquid no-scent soap. When I
used to shower with straight
unscented soap, I could
always smell a little odor
when I was finished. I can’t
smell a thing when I mix in
baking soda.”

Make a soda-and-clothes

“Use baking soda like any
other powdered detergent to
wash your clothes. Dry them,
lay a few items in a plastic
tote, sprinkle a layer of soda
on that, put in another layer
of clothing, sprinkle more
soda, and so on until the tote
is full. Then place an open
box of baking soda in with the
clothes and seal the tote up.”
Sprinkle your boots.
“Obviously, your feet are one
of the smelliest body parts
because they’re constantly
sweating inside your boots,”
VanDoorn says. “If my boots
are wet with perspiration
after a hunt, I put them on a
boot dryer and then sprinkle
in some baking soda. I’ve had
very few deer cut my tracks
since I started doing this.”
Save money.

Speaking of fists – OU
football player Joe Mixson
could take a cue from this
train of thought as well.
Some male feminists - who
also happen to be OU fans came out of the closet to
lament that Mixon was
taunted and was just
protecting himself. If you
want to be a man, don’t ever
hit a woman. Just don’t. It’s so
sad that some men still need
that lesson.
I haven’t seen the images
related to Adrian Peterson’s

sound of it, it went beyond
the switching that many of us
endured in childhood. And
the child is just four years
old. Even pro-corporal

that this is too young.

player? Some would have us
believe that tackling drills
creates a hostile and volatile
man.
With recent grainy elevator
videos and baby mama
allegations, here we go down
the trail of accusations and
situations all stemming from
over-aggressive behaviors.
But we all know it goes far
beyond NFL players – they
are just the ones on the front
pages right now.
There is just no way to get
around Ray Rice’s behavior.
He’s an animal who doesn’t
deserve a wife to beat on.
First time this ever
happened? Yeah, right. And
I’m a member of the United
States Olympics gymnastics

His actions don’t show a
violent, hostile man so much
as they show a very weak
man. I really don’t care what
his background is. He’s a

nearby bush. In fact, most of
us had to select the switch
ourselves. I can still
remember roaming my
grandmother’s landscaping
looking for a twig that
screamed “least likely to hurt
upon contact.” Funny thing
is, I don’t remember the
actual discipline. It was the
build-up that was
frightening. My grandmother
was all of 5 feet tall and
tipped the scales at triple
digits. But she knew how to
look me down and make me
feel rightly guilty! That was
almost punishment enough.
Through the course of my
own childhood, I received a
few spankings, whoopings,
whatever you want to call
them. They were never
administered out of anger,
but several hours after my
infraction. By then I’d had
time to worry about what was
coming and regret what I’d
done. But I don’t recall any
physical evidence ever left
behind -- just a stinging and a
shame that served to remind
me to make a better choice
next time. And I was old
enough to understand that.
That’s really the purpose any
type of physical
punishments SHOULD
serve.
Some have criticized Rice

apologizing appropriately. I
say “put your sorry’s in a
sack” with a nod to George
Costanza of Seinfeld fame.
Any apology would be
crafted by a public relations
firm and designed to move
their millionaire client
forward to future
endorsements and earnings.
We aren’t who they need to
apologize to anyway. Rice’s

reaction in that elevator was
obviously out of rage. It
appears maybe Peterson’s
was laced with anger too.
Seems to me they should
keep that mentality on the
football field. Then be grown
men off of it.

Senator attends No Labels National
Ideas Meeting in D.C.
Thursday at 2pm
OKLAHOMA CITY – Senator
Connie Johnson traveled to
t h e n a t i o n’ s C a p i t a l
Wednesday to meet with
dozens of members of the
U.S. Senate and House of
Representatives, state and
local officials, and business
and community leaders for a
one day No Labels National
Strategic Agenda Meeting.
The meeting served as the
kick-off to a yearlong process
that that will set a vision for
where America needs to go
and how we will get there.
“I’m pleased to be a part of
this nonpartisan effort to
bring those issues most
important to Oklahomans
and other citizens to this
nationwide conversation.
Our country is dealing with
some serious issues that can
no longer be ignored or tied
up in partisan gridlock in
Congress,” said Johnson, DOklahoma County. “The
people’s voices and concerns
about education, jobs and
governance deserve to be
heard in Washington, D.C.
This session offered the
perfect opportunity to begin
that process.”
The goal of the movement is
to develop a comprehensive
policy document – with
input from people across
America – by October 2015,
just as the presidential
election is getting started.
“Washington has become too
complacent and too
accepting of gridlock as the
natural order of things. It’s
n o t , ” s a i d G o v. J o n
Huntsman, Co-Chair of No
Labels. “The National
Strategic Agenda is a big
idea, and it’s simply the right
idea at the right time. It
directly involves citizens in
the process and will help our
nation’s leaders rediscover
the lost art of policymaking.”
No Labels – a national
movement of Democrats,
Republicans and
Independents dedicated to
problem solving – is calling
for America’s leaders to
support a new governing
process to build a National
Strategic Agenda. The
Agenda includes four goals –
chosen with input from a
nationwide survey that No
Labels conducted last fall:
• Create 25 million new jobs
over the next 10 years
• Balance the federal budget
by 2030
• Secure Medicare and
Social Security for the next
75 years
• Make America energy
secure by 2024
"We began the process of
creating The National
Strategic Agenda with input
from people across America
in attendance at the National
Ideas Meeting. Subsequent
events in New Hampshire,
Iowa, Philadelphia and
elsewhere will enable No
Labels to take the pulse of
people across America and,
ultimately, forge agreement
on a full policy plan to
achieve the goals of the
National Strategic Agenda,"
said Johnson.
More than 80 members of
Congress have endorsed the
process to create the
National Strategic Agenda.
“No one has ever tried this
approach before, which is
one of the reasons why
people are so energized by
it,” said No Labels Executive
Director Margaret Kimbrell.
“I spent a week in August
talking to people about the
National Strategic Agenda at
the Iowa State Fair and the
response was unbelievable.
People just want to be a part
of an inclusive process
where everyone can have a
stake in the outcome.”
The National Strategic
Agenda is not just another
policy plan, because the
specifics of how its four
signature goals are achieved
will be filled in over the next
year through a rigorous and
deliberate process.
“Many of our leaders say
they want to unite – not
divide – our country, but no
one ever says exactly how
this can be accomplished,”
continued Kimbrell. “The
creation of the National
Strategic Agenda is precisely
how we unite our leaders
and move the country
forward in support of
common goals.”
The completed National
Strategic Agenda will be
unveiled in New Hampshire
and Iowa on October 5, 2015.
Although Washington, D.C.
has been consumed by
gridlock in recent years,
various state leaders and
legislatures have made
notable progress in their
respective states.
“These challenges we’re
discussing on the 17th aren’t
just Washington’s problem.
This is a problem for my
home state of Iowa as well as
the other 49 states,” said
state Sen. Jeff Danielson, DIowa. “Most state leaders are
used to working across the
aisle so they need to play a
big role in pointing the way
forward. Good jobs, a
balanced budget, a strong
social safety net and energy
security … these are
challenges we all need to
pull together to solve. And
there isn’t a moment to
waste.”

I was so upset today as I stood in line behind a young
teen and her dad as they were paying for her clothes.
The girl at the counter kept pushing "the newest
cologne" while the dad was politely telling his teen it
would be another time, the clerk just kept on until the
teen told her dad she just had to have the fragrance, so
he dug out the last few dollars he had to make his
daughter happy.
I realize mobile phones are a part of our lives, but
please turn off or leave your phone in your car while
attending a funeral. I was appalled by two people
using their phone while in line at a visitation in a
church. You are not being respectful to the deceased
and their family.
The media is once again paying more attention to NFL
stars and their problems. I can remember back a few
years when a TV person was charged with abuse, did
not lose his job. You protect your own but do your best
to ruin others lives. Why?
I tuned in late to President Obama's ISIS strategy
speech. His wrap-up was all about how America is a
world leader and has many wonderful resources to
help the world. As I was listening, I thought: "He
finally considers America to be exceptional."
Who is responsible for vehicle damage when the road
has been dug up and temporarily repaired? I watch
cars swerve out of their lane to avoid the potholes left
from the work that was done. Why is it so difficult to
put asphalt down and be done with it? Shouldn't that
have been planned before they started the project.
Now it's become a hazard to everyone transmitting
through the area and it's either going to damage
someone's vehicle and/or cause an accident. I hope it's
fixed (correctly/permanently) real soon.
As a grandparent that has raised my grandchildren for
many years, the current case brought out a lot of
emotions for me. I would like to say I understand but I
don’t. Praying for peace for all.

microchipped, fixed, and up-to-date on all shots. He is
looking for his perfect FURever home.
He was part of a very sad neglect case that recently concluded
in the court system. He has now been released for adoption.
Flop was one of the animals volunteers spent time with and
walked on a rotated schedule. I personally found him to be
inquisitive and loving, he just ate up the attention. He is very
eager to love and is extremely loyal and is displaying perfect
potty training skills, he loves other dogs, all people and with
the right environment will bring a life time of memories and
joy.
PAWS McAlester along with the love and support of the

He would make a great indoor dog

Winter beef cattle tips
Clean manure out of pens. Make sure feed is analyzed and
rations are in place. Now is a good time to strategically de
worm cows after we have had a good freeze.
Make sure you pregnancy test all cows and cull open females in
order to save feed resources.
Sort cows by body condition adn feed groups accordingly in
order to get thin cows back into better shape before spring
calving.
Evaluate bulls and begin to make bull buying decisions for next
year.

As the seasons change, so do

simple tips and tricks, you
can get your children what
they need—and maybe even
what they want—without
breaking the bank.
Before you hit the stores this
fall, take stock of what you
have. You might be surprised
how many No. 2 pencils and

your children's closets.
Consider hosting a Back-toSchool Swap. It’s safe to say

outgrown clothing, you can
make a dent in your list and
spend time with good

This would be a great time to

skipping the crowded mall

in late September. You’ll get
the same clothes at a fraction
of the price.
Don’t forget to price match.
Many large stores offer pricematch guarantees. Bring an

community will help YOU
feel safer and help make
your neighborhood a better
place to live. Crime
prevention is everyone's
responsibility, not just a
job for the police.
Although surveys
consistently show that
persons over 65 are victims
of crime far less frequently
than young people, senior
citizens suffer more as a
result of crime. Many
senior citizens are so
worried about crime they
shut themselves up in their
homes and rarely go out.
Isolating yourself behind
locked doors, not getting
together with your
neighbors, actually makes
a criminal's work easier.
Senior citizens are more
vulnerable to certain
crimes like purse
snatching, mugging and
fraud. You can reduce
opportunities for criminals
to strike by being careful,
alert, and a good neighbor.
When You Are Out
•If you must carry a purse,
hold it close to your body.
Do not dangle it.
•Never carry a wallet in
your back pocket. Put it in
an inside jacket pocket or
front pants pocket.
•Make sure someone
knows where you are going
and when you expect to
return.
•Avoid dark, deserted
routes even if they are the
shortest.
•Whenever possible,
travel with friends.
•Do not overburden
yourself with packages and
groceries that obstruct
your view and make it hard
to react.
•Have your car or house
key in hand as you
approach your vehicle or
home.
•Carry a whistle or freon
horn.
WE NEED YOUR TRADE-INS!
•When you drive, keep
doors locked and windows
up. Park in well-lit, busy
areas.
•If you have car trouble, be
wary of strangers who offer
help. Stay in your car and
ask them to call the police
or sheriff or a tow service.
•If a friend or taxi takes
you home, ask the driver to
wait until you are safely
inside.
•When walking, act calm,
confident, and know
where you are going. Trust
your instincts. If you feel
uncomfortable in a place or
situation, leave.
