Presidents Corner:
Greetings Bassmasters,
Half of our tournament year has slipped by rather quickly. If it continues
like that we are just a short cast away from the banquet. Hold on, I don’t
want to get to far ahead. The first half has been full of stuff we all signed
up for and some we didn’t. Things like wet bottom stories, (fell off the
boat for the new guys), stories of travel to the out of town tournaments,
sandbar stories, mechanical failure stories, stories of how we got’um and
how we didn’t. The list of stories could go on and on. What I’m getting at
is, with all our stories can you believe most of our neighbors and some
friends stay home doing other stuff with a very limited bucket of things to tell.
I’m fortunate to be a Bassmaster, with six months still to go I get to share all my upcoming stories with my poor
misfortunate friends and neighbors whether they want to hear it or not. I am looking forward to the next half.
Old News ….. From El Cap, Head Ranger, Keith Tackleberry, has said that there will be no water contact sports
allowed from approximately Tree Hole on back and a limit of 25 pleasure boats on the lake, no limit on fishing
boats. This is third hand news; hope it’s all the real deal.
The San Diego Council of Bass Clubs will again host the Crisis House Fish Camp at Chollas Lake Park on
Sunday June 29th 7:30 to 12 noon. As of this date additional sponsors this years are, San Diego Bassmasters,
Road Rangers Bass Club, and Barnacle Bill’s Tackle, Jim Sleight’s El Cajon Ford’s “SD Team Series”. This
event is held for the kids of Crisis House, (to 16 years old), domestic abuse, homeless or any other reason the
children find themselves under the watchful eye of Crisis House. We look forward to having one mentor per
child to assist and instruct. We count on our San Diego Council fishing families to pull this off. We will be
there one week after a catfish plant so don’t forget a rag and pliers. We can guarantee Hot Dogs, Chips, Sodas
and very fulfilling Sunday Morning.
More from the Bass Council, Treasure Gary Bass reports a general fund balance of $11304.26 and savings of
5054.01 earmarked for the Hall of Fame. The adventure continues with securing authorization from the City to
erect the Hall of Fame Kiosk at El Capitan. With assistance from local legend Jim Brown, our own Jim
Putney will bulldog this to the end. It is time we begin to provide Top Six profiles and photos to the Council so
they have plenty of time to put the program together. The Top Six is scheduled for September 27 th. That is
the same day as National Bass West will have their Fish Off at Lake Havasu. They had to reschedule on top of
our event because the Havasu City permit people at a little bump in their planning.
Looking forward to Otay, I enjoy earning my two points there as much as anywhere. See ya at the meeting.
Ron Overman

Vice President
Hello, San DiegoBassmasters! Okay, here’s the deal… our next function is our Annual Club Picnic on June
15th, Father’s Day. You all come to the picnic and I promise we will all have a good time! How’s that sound?
The location will be one of our favorites: Santee Lake #5 “Site Q” – it’s on the island that we like. We will
have good food, Ed Marr will see to that. Also plan on games for the kids, games for the ladies, washer toss,
casting contest, and all your good friends will be there. Plus, at the end of the day Doris Cook and Zoe Gardner
will host a dynamite raffle. So gather up the kids and friends and come share in the fun. One more thing – in
honor of Father’s Day we will have a special drawing for all the fathers in attendance: a collector-value Buck
Knife. Be sure all you fathers get your ticket before the drawing starts. You can also bring your rods and do
some fishing. There is water all around the island and the young ones can show their fathers how to fish.
Parking for the day is $5.00. Fishing permits are $9.00 for adults and $6.00 for those 15 and under. You do not
need a California fishing license for Santee Lakes. Hey, let’s all get together and have a good time!
Our next function after the picnic will be “Bunco Night” on August 9 th. Vicki Becker has agreed to organize
this one. Curtis Arneman has offered to let us do this at his home. We will give address and directions on how
to get there as we get closer to the Big Day. Bunco is a lot of fun. It was introduced to our club by Donalea and
Bud Brant and it has been a very much liked function from the beginning. I have not been one to like playing
games. With me, it’s all about the fishing. But Donalea told me I would have a good time, and I did! Now, I
won’t miss it. Hey – all my friends are there, what’s not to like? Thank you Donalea and Bud for showing us
how to have a good time! More info coming as we get closer.
Last meeting we had a guest speaker. Judy Lohman, Zoe’s friend, gave us a lot of good information on how to
take care of ourselves in the heat, and the latest on C.P.R.. Thank you, Judy. And thank you, Zoe, for getting
her to us. We have talked at the Board meeting about having one or two more programs this year. I will keep
you posted.
In the words of my good friend Ed Marr…”Later.”

TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR – TERRY CHENOWTH
Hello Bassmasters,
Well our May river tournament was interesting. Vicki and I left for the river about 5am Wednesday morning
and we had to fight some really bad winds going over the mountains and a lot of blowing sand going through
the desert. I know some of you that left after we did were stopped and turned around for a while because of the
winds. We got on the water about 9am and it was just as windy there as it was on the drive over. The lakes were
all churned up from the wind. They were all different colors depending on the lake bottoms. The wind did
finally let up on Thursday afternoon and was good for both days of the tournament. Fishing was fair, not a lot of
limits but most managed to get into some fish. Inder lopez only brought three bass to the scales on Friday but
had 14.95 pounds with a 8.22 pounded that was big bass of the tournament. Inder had a limit the second day to
win the tournament with 24.63 pounds. Ron Overman wasn’t even sure he was going to be able to make the
tournament, But he made it and weighed in two limits for 23.33 pounds that was good enough for second place.
Nick Meyer brought in ten bass that weighed 22.47 pounds and took third place. We had 39 Bassmasters make
the drive and all had a good time.
Our next tournament is at Otay on June 7th. Partner drawing an paying for big bass will be at our general
meeting. The water level at Otay has been dropping and the launch ramp has been reduced to two lanes. So be
careful putting in and taking out of the water.
With the water levels dropping, lakes getting narrower and lots of us fishing off shore we are going to be
requiring all boats to have running light in and operating. The City has been allowing us to launch before sun up
and several people after the last Otay tournament let me know that they felt unsafe because numerous boats did
not have lights on. So make sure your lights are working before you get to the lake. If you get on to the lake and
your light don’t work you can’t run your big motor until after sun up. If you are seen running before sun up with
out lights you will be disqualified. Sun up on July 7 th will be at 5:40am. This safety rule will be followed the
rest of the year.
We have also been having an issue with weigh slips. First, To make sure you get credited with all of you points
even if you don’t weigh any fish you must turn in a weigh slip. We have had some problems getting results
done accurately because of this. Second, Tournament rule #24 says “A properly completed tournament slip must
be presented prior to presenting fish for weigh in. It must include the first and last name of the participant, the
lake fished, the date, and, for tournaments where a DFG waiver has been granted, the waiver permit number.
Failure to bring a properly completed weigh slip to the weigh station will result in a one quarter pound penalty
and loss of position in the weigh in line.”
Make sure your weigh slip ids properly and completely filled in before you head to the scales.
See you on the water,
Terry Chenowth
From the Treasurer’s Desk:
Here we are getting ready for the Otay Tournament. Everybody has
been recognized for their tournament accomplishments over the last
two months so nothing to talk about there.
I do want to talk about our financial situation. The good news is we
are still in good financial shape. The bad news is we have had a larger
than normal go inactive or go at large due to a number of reasons. When I set the budget for the club I had to
assume that we would have a full roster and a corresponding full year of dues to be paid. As we all know this is
currently not the case. Still no reason to worry. We have brought in some new members and we have a number
of prospective members waiting in the wings. So we will make up some of the lost revenue.
With that all being said, it will be very important for EVERY member to participate in the revenue generating
functions we always have going on in the club. If you have some of the drinks and snacks that the club
provides, please make sure you contribute to the fund. Please buy raffle tickets. If you have stuff to contribute
to the raffle, please talk to Jeff Manning about contributing your un-used stuff to the raffle. I have a large
number of tackle I am going to pull off the wall to give to Jeff. Some of it is stuff some people would not buy.
For $5.00 you could get a great deal.
We are going to have several events coming up like the Picnic and our annual Bunco night. Both of these are
open to anyone. Bring your friends, family, and people you do not like but will behave at these events. We are
also looking at a fund raiser night tournament. Every Bassmaster needs to have a ride for the tournament. That
is how we do things. But once we assure that all of our guys have a ride, let us make sure that we have a full
field. All boats should have 2 fisherpersons per boat.
Finally, please remember, this is our club. The more we put in the more we get in return. I appreciate your
attention to where we are and what we need to do to have a great year and a great banquet. That is my focus. I
know we have the best bass club in San Diego. There is no other bass club in San Diego that does things like
we do. Ask anyone you know if they have anything like we have at year end. The answer is a resounding NO.
So, again, please participate in all the club functions that you can. This is Our Club, the best bass club in San
Diego. We are the San Diego Bassmasters. We are the best bass club in San Diego. The reason for that is the
character and quality of our membership of our club. It is important to remember what it is about us that makes
us who we are and what sets us apart.
As a short reminder, when we were at the River, I saw Josh Rhodes and Matt Barksdale towing some guys that
were not Our Guys somewhere around Clear Lake. Josh and Matt gave up their pre-fish time to bring these
people to Fisher’s Landing. It is also my understanding that Josh and Matt were thanked with nothing more than
a wave of thanks. While we can never put expectations on the people we help, it is our obligation to maintain
the San Diego Bassmasters standard of doing the right thing. Josh and Matt, thank you for exhibiting the
actions that make me proud to be a member of the best bass club in San Diego.
See you on the water,
Frank

San Diego Bassmasters General Meeting
May 1, 2014
The May 6 Meeting
President Ron Overman-Welcomed everyone to the May club meeting and started it at 705pm
Membership-Regina SeabergGuests were Andy and Jackson Paluchek. Bart Heggler Jr and Judy Lowman the nurse from sharps. 2 new prospect
members Tanner Forman and Patti Ryder.
Treasurer-Frank Neugebauer-Budget is looking ok.
Tournament Director-Terry Chenowth- Thanks to all for helping with Terry’s tire. Otay- 12.26lbs Joe Desalvo 3rd place
caught lots of Alabama rig with white and red grubs. 2nd place 13.875lbs Josh Bueller on Alabama rig. Jim Putney had
18.68lbs with an 11.31lber on first cast of the day. Jim thanked Terry for the photo. Jim had an interesting day. He was
a little late to the launch and Scott helped him launch. Found a spot in Otay and caught the big one. The fish fought
really hard. There was no one with Jim to net the fish. Caught on a green pumpkin trick worm on drop shot. Sonny
gave Putney the Big Fish pot money for 180.00 Paid with a check this time instead of pennies.
May tourney was at River. 3rd place was Nick Meyer 22.47lbs. First time ever at the river. Fished Face and Fergusson
and caught fish on a fluke. 2nd place was Ron Overman with 23.3 lbs. Ronnie was very surprised. He prefished with
Regina and went to lake one and found lots of bed fish. They were skiddish but he caught them. First place and big fish
was Inder Lopez 8.22lb and total weight 27.63lbs.
In preparation for Diamond Valley next month we have 21 legal boats and 17 not legal. Not enough boats to assure
spots for Diamond Valley. Short by about 4 boats. Options include Otay but there is a night tourney there, Hodges
might not have enough water for launching, and El cap is also available but lots of pleasure boaters there to deal with.
A vote was held and Otay was selected by a narrow vote.
Terry had extra weigh slips for everyone.
Greg G Vice President Thanked Ed Marr for the family tourney and congrats to Regina and Dave for the win.
Picnic will be father’s day June 15th at Santee lakes with food handled by Ed Marr and Raffle by Doris and Dave Mack
casting contest and the washer toss. Thanks to all who are helping out.
Bunco is being handled by Vicky Becker at Curtis’ house.
The planning for the banquet is on track.
Thanks to Scott for supplying the drinks.
Guest Speaker-Andy and Jackson Palachek came to raffle off stuff to support Action Jackson’s fishing. You don’t see
many kids fishing, we need more kids to fish. They have raised money for the crisis house and since they lost the fishing
store they took some tourney winnings and bought some rods and reels for the crisis house. They suggest more people
should try to get kids involved in fishing. They were raffling a swim bait rod from Kevin Norling and a reel from Wayne at
Fisherman’s whole sale, and a Deps slide swimmer and some Blackwater fluorocarbon line. You can enter online and in
person. They raised 900 dollars so far. Doing the drawing on father’s day June 15 th. 5 bucks a piece or 6 tix for $20.
Wants to use the money raised for a fishing derby for the kids of the crisis house.
Guest speaker-Judy Lowman a Nurse from Sharps came to talk about first aid.
Some recommendations included
To clean a wound soap and water are better than h2o2. Then apply a triple antibiotic.
Heat rash are bumps but heat stroke is an emergency characterized by dizziness and lots of sweating and
confusion loss of consciousness. Call 911 Be careful when forcing people to drink-they may suffer a seizure. If
someone has a seizure put on side and keep airway open. If someone passes out don’t leave them.
Drink water 6-8oz per hour No alcohol. Electrolyte drinks are ok. Caffeine drinks can lead to dehydration. Don’t
drink too much or too little. Monitor your urine color. Drink pedialyte the day before.
For people who suffer cramps consider quinine meds. Seizure. Rattle snake elevate and get to emergency
room.
If you suffer from angina you need to remember your NO for your pains.
Aspirin is good to take.
Good ideas to get CPR trained. Chest compressions hard and fast. Don’t give breaths, just hard and fast
compressions at nipple line about 2inches in depth by locking elbows and putting weight over your arms.
Remember your preventive stuff- it was a bad flu season this year. Get blood pressure, glucose BMI index,
cholesterol, and tobacco use all need to be in check. Cancer screening skin cancers.
A signup sheet for the Otay tournament was circulated and a picnic signup sheet.
Break was taken at 8:15

FISH TALES - By: Doris Cook
A FUN “GET AWAY”!
Jim and I just returned last night from our Memorial Day weekend trip to visit our
friends, Gary & Mikki Wheeler in Apache Junction, AZ. Gary was president of the
San Diego Bassmasters in 1979. I returned to find out I missed the newsletter
deadline and discovered I had no “Fish Tales” to write about, so decided to talk
about Jim’s fun trip with Gary up to his cabin in Christopher Creek, AZ. on
Saturday. Christopher Creek is located in the Tonto National Forest, 120 miles northeast of Phoenix and
approximately 20 miles east of Payson, AZ. at an elevation of 5900 feet. Gary took Jim on a tour of the local
trout hatchery, which was very enjoyable and most informative. Normally Gary would be trout fishing in the
nearby Christopher Creek, but due to the holiday weekend, he decided it would be too crowed. After touring
the scenic surrounding area in Gary’s Polaris, he grilled rib eye steaks with all the trimmings for their dinner.
They spent the night and came back to Apache Junction Sunday morning. Mikki and I went to play bingo with
the Indians at Fort McDowell, but unfortunately didn’t win. Jim made his famous tacos, for all of us on
Memorial Day. As usual, they were delicious. It was a very enjoyable “get-away” weekend.

Member Profiles
By Cheryl Byrd
I apologize for not putting a profile in last month's newsletter, but I forgot to do it before we all went to the
River. As I said two months ago, I needed to finish Cesar's profile with the stats regarding his club
involvement.
Cesar Diosdado
Cesar joined the club in July of 1994. Due to his work schedule as a Sheriff
and his annual fishing and hunting trips, Cesar has never fished a complete
club season. In his first full year, 1995, he participated in 8 tournaments,
ending the year with his personal best 24th place. Cesar placed 4th at Otay in
1997 and caught a 6.56 pounder at an El Capitan night tournament in 2001.
Doing well is always an added bonus, but Cesar will tell you it is all about the
camaraderie for him.
Over the years, Cesar has helped with the club clothes and served on the
Scholarship Committee. We thank him for his long service as a Sheriff and
now that he is retired we hope to see him more often.
Brent Benish
Brent was born and raised in Wauwatosa (a suburb of Milwaukee),
Wisconsin, at the fork of the Kinicinic and Menomenee Rivers. He
started bass fishing at age 12 with his dad. They would fish on
Sundays at Lake Nagawicka, Peawaukee, or Gitche Gumee after
they finished delivering the morning newspaper. Attending college
at UCSD brought Brent to San Diego and he has been here for 20
years
Brent owns a Skeeter boat and not only participates in our club
tournaments but many team events around town. The largest fish
Brent has caught is a sailfish while in Zihuatanejo, MX. Although
it wasn't weighed, he says his largest bass was around 10 pounds Brent loves to fish reaction baits and
especially spinner baits. His favorite local lake is Hodges. Brent doesn't have any other hobbies than fishing.
When asked if he was married, he said, "No, I'm single", but when asked if he had any kids, he said, "Not
sure...ya never know who’s going to come knocking at the door."
Currently, Brent works for Celgene as a scientist who works on the development of drugs for Cancer and
Inflammatory disorders.
Brent joined the club in February 2007. In 2008 he was in charge of the club merchandise and this year he is on
the Board for the first time, serving as Secretary. Brent has taken our Big Fish money 3 times plus 3 third and 4
second place tournament finishes. He is still waiting for that allusive 1st place finish. Brent has had 2 Top 12
finishes and is currently in 12th place after four events. We hope Brent is able to stay in the top twelve for 2014
and wish him many more years of participation with the Bassmasters.
Vicki Becker
Vicki was born in Waukegan, Ill to a Navy family. She calls herself a "Navy
Brat" and as such, moved around a lot as a kid. The Navy brought her family to
San Diego in 1973 and she has been here since. Vicki graduated from Santana
High School in 1977 and attended some college. Vicki has two grown sons,
Patrick and Kris, and a couple of grandkids.
Vicki started bass fishing at San Vicente a couple of years before joining the
club. Her favorite lake is San Vicente and is anxious for it to reopen. Vicki's
favorite way of catching bass is all things topwater. She caught her largest bass
and took home our Big Fish money at an Otay night tournament with a 7.94
pounder.
Vicki currently works at Sunwest Management, as a Property Supervisor
managing rental property. She says her only hobbies besides fishing is relaxing
and hanging with Terry Chenowth (her main squeeze), but we know that she is a
great shot with her shotgun, a natural at golf, good at pool and loves to ride her
bike.
Vicki joined the club in May 2001. She has 1 second and 2 third place tournament
finishes to go along with her Big Fish in tournament. Vicki has served on the
Board three times, twice as Secretary and once as V.P. She has helped with the club merchandise, fish fry,
beach bonfire/BBQ, Bunco, the Bass Council's Tournament of Champions and just about everything else the
club does. We wish Vicki success in the club for many years to come.
