The Chamber is preparing our 2012 / 2013 budget and will be approving it in the near
future. This past year our budget was reduced. This required us to be open only 20 hours
per week. With everyone still on a tight budget it is very likely that our hours will remain at
20 per week Tuesday through Friday. Our goal at the Chamber this year is to look at planning
several fundraising events to enhance our revenues to the extent that our hours might again
be extended.
The Belhaven Celebration Committee has been very supportive of the Chamber and has
again this year allowed our participation in the planning for the Belhaven 4th of July
Celebration and Parade. This joint venture has been a benefit to the Chamber as all vendor
and parade forms are now available on our website. This means that we are getting greater
numbers of users to the site. This new website only came online in June of 2011 and is the
result of a grant provided through the Community Developers of Beaufort-Hyde. That grant
has helped put the Chamber in the forefront of technology and we are very thankful. It has
allowed us to give the Belhaven community a lot more exposure.
The US 264 Association is progressing after delays caused by Hurricane Irene.
A brochure and map is being worked on and more technological advances are being
considered such as geocaching ideas and QR code applications. Belhaven is fortunate in that
any additional traffic created will have to travel through Belhaven. We now must create
methods and ideas to make travelers want to stop here and spend money at our
establishments.
Along this line, the Belhaven Chamber Board of Directors, at our May board meeting,
authorized the beginning of a process that will result in the live hands-on construction of a
native canoe and sailing skiff over the next two to three years. It was determined that having
an on-going construction project for historical preservation and educational purposes would
be something that we can advertise. And since Belhaven is a working town then the project
should represent and demonstrate our maritime working history. We are in the process of
finding the best location for the boats to be built.
The Beaufort County 300th Celebration Committee is in the final stages of contract
negotiations for this years premier event. That event will hopefully be a performance by the
NC Symphony on September 22nd at the Washington waterfront. The day is planned to be
full of music, re-enactments of historical eras, farming related heritage demonstrations to
name a few. The overall effort is to identify and display the many diverse aspects of the
history of Beaufort county.
After July the US 264 billboard lease, that has been on going for two years, will expire. We
have asked citizens and businesses to pay for that signage and the community has responded
far beyond our expectations and we thank all of you who donated to this project.
Finally, the Chamber, like many other chambers have done in an effort to cut costs, will be
ending the mailing of our monthly newsletters. The newsletter will now be placed on our
website, belhavenchamber.com, in a manner that can be printed if anyone wanted to have a
printed copy. And if you have a color printer they will be in color. This effort will save the
Chamber by reducing our postage costs, paper waste and printer expenses. One of our
largest expenses has been printer/copier service fees and monthly payments. The Board has
opted to forgo buying a new large commercial printer. It was decided that the few major
printing needs could more cheaply be contracted out. Lloyd Ballance, Executive Director.

NC Estuarium Calendar - June 2012
River Roving Educational River Tours- NC Estuarium, Washington, NC -Learn about the history and
habitats of the Washington waterfront. These boat tours cruise the Pamlico River Wednesday through
Friday at 10:30 and 1:30, and Saturdays at 10:30. No admission fee or other cost is involved for the tour,
but advance reservations are required. Riders should check in 15 minutes in advance. Children must be at
least 6 years old to ride; a responsible adult must accompany children under 16. River Roving 2012 is
sponsored by Lee Chevrolet-Buick of Washington. Call 252-948-0000 for reservations.
Art Exhibit-“Wild North Carolina Through The Artist’s Eyes” NC Estuarium, Washington, NCThe North Carolina Wildlife Artist Society was founded by a few wildlife artists within our state in order to
bring the wildlife artists, advocates, huntsmen and art collectors together. Made up of North Carolina
residents, the juried society shows the highest quality wildlife art available. North Carolina flora and fauna
and marine life are depicted in paintings and photography.
Thursday, June 7- “Refuge- Pocosin Lakes” – NC Estuarium, Washington, NC- 1:00-2:00- $2.00
program fee. This film is the second in the award-winning series REFUGE created by Washington-based
filmmakers Blake and Emily Scott. “Refuge-Pocosin Lakes” explores the fascinating habitats and wildlife that
abound at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, a 110,000-acre natural area on the Albemarle-Pamlico
Peninsula. (Children and Adults)
June 11-15 – Beaufort County Art Camp – NC Estuarium, Washington, NC- Please contact the
Beaufort County Arts Council at 252-946-2504 for registration. Classes attend a program at the Estuarium.
Wednesday, June 20- Storytelling with the Inner Banks Storytellers Group – NC Estuarium,
Washington, NC- 10:30-11:30- $2.00 program fee. Stories, music and puppets from people who love having
fun. Suitable for families and school age children. Call for reservations at 252-948-0000.
Tuesday, June 26- Don’t Get Blown Away by Hurricanes- NC Estuarium, Washington, NC- 1:002:00- $2.00 program fee. Join Michelle Covi, Outreach Coordinator from the Renaissance Computing
Institute at East Carolina University (RENCI@ECU) for a hands-on learning experience about hurricanes.
Participants will create and track hurricanes using computer technology and make crafts to take home. See
the ROVER, RENCI’s outreach vehicle, which is equipped with technology for emergency response. Learn
about these storms so you don’t get blown away. Call for reservations at 252-948-0000. (Adults and

The Crab Pot Gift Shop is full of unique gifts with a natural flair. North Carolina products and books are
featured. It is a great place for summer shopping.
The Estuarium is located at 223 E. Water Street, Washington, NC, and
is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00-4:00. Admission is $4.00 adults and
$2.00 students. Please call ahead for program information as
space may be limited. The Estuarium is a Partnership for the Sounds
facility, an organization promoting eco-tourism and sustainable economic development in the Albemarle-Pamlico region. Educational

Goose Creek State Park Calendar of Events

Palmetto Boardwalk Hike: The palmetto boardwalk gives you a close-up view of a hardwood swamp
transitioning into a marsh. It also contains tons of wildlife, fauna and flora. This hike will begin at the
park’s Visitor Center.
Sunday June 10, 2:00 p.m.
“Stayin’ Alive” A Beginner’s Guide to Surviving in the Wilderness: All ages are welcome to
come and find out some of the best ways to survive in the wilderness here in Eastern NC. We will all work
together to demonstrate some of the ways to collect and use the resources around us to survive. Please meet
at the park’s Visitor Center.

Owls: Goose Creek State Park is home to a variety of species of owls. Join us as we search for and discuss these amazing birds. We will begin this program in parking lot just outside the Family Campground.

Chiggers: Chiggers, Tics and Mosquitoes debunked and debugged. Find out about summer’s annoying
little pests, how they work, how to avoid them and their questionable ecological value. Meet in the bug-free

Birds of Prey: These shy creatures soar in the sky above the park. Join us as we take a look at what
makes them so spectacular. Please meet at the park’s Visitor Center.

Water Loving Mammals: Have you ever heard of Nutria? How about Muskrat, Beaver or Otter? All
of these mammals can be found hanging in or around our Goose Creek waters. We will give you great

June’s “Coffee with the Expert” will be on Tuesday, June
12th, 2012, at 9:30 a.m. We will be talking about “What’s
Next” for caregivers. Our friend Susan Cox will be here
to facilitate this discussion.
Light breakfast treats will be served.
This Senior Center has no membership dues and is open and available to all seniors for participation in any of
the many scheduled activities or simply for rest and relaxation.
The Center is a 501-3(c) a non-profit organization, all donations are welcome and are tax deductible.
Our Walking Program continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please be at the Seniors’ Center by 9:20 if you
plan to walk with the “Center Strides.” Everyone walks at their own pace for approximately thirty minutes.
This is a growing group, come and join the fun! If weather is not friendly toward walking outside, we will walk
inside!!!
The Yoga Class will take a summer schedule break. Watch for some articles regarding Yoga and what it is
all about in July and August newsletters. This class is free and is sponsored by the
Marion L. Shepherd Cancer Center.
“Step Up and Stomp Out Elder Abuse,” scheduled for June 13, 2012
is a very special fun day planned for Seniors.
This event will be held in Williamston.
The Seniors Center – Belhaven will have a bus to take us to this event.
We have space for 12 riders.
There is a $20.00 fee for the event. That includes lunch, a tee shirt and covers the bus fare also. This will be
a fund raiser for the six senior centers in our region. Please support your center, Seniors’ Center – Belhaven,
and sign up to attend this event.
