Belhaven Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet
On Thursday, March 26th, the Belhaven Chamber
of Commerce hosted its 2015 Awards banquet. Following a nice reception, the 75-80 attendees were
treated to a great dinner catered by Kyzer Catering of
Pantego. A very informative presentation was made
about the Boy Scouts of Beaufort County and their
facilities at Blounts Creek by Mr. Ray Franks, Council
Executive for East Carolina Council of B.S.A.
The evening was capped off by our 2015 awards presentations. Mr. Jim Carpenter was recognized as Belhaven’s Distinguished Citizen of the Year. Jim is
recognized for his love of Belhaven and his involvement in the community. It was
his love of blue grass music that gave him the idea to start the Main Street Landing
Bluegrass Jams. Often riding his 3-wheeled bicycle around Belhaven and frequenting O’Neal’s Snack Bar at lunchtime, Jim always has a smile on his face and
a willingness to help any who ask.
The 2015 Small Business of the Year Award was presented to Mr. Frankie
Waters. Growing up in Bath , he went on to earn a degree in Agricultural Economics from NC State. After working in the banking business for 30 years primarily
with Wells Fargo in Belhaven he retired and started his own business. He has
served as President of TriCounty Telecom and on numerous other boards. Most
recently he was elected to the Beaufort County Commission.
Sixteen year old Brady Hudnell was honored as Belhaven’s Junior Citizen of
the Year. He attends Pungo Christian Academy where he enjoys playing baseball
and basketball. Away from school he likes lifting weights with his cousin and riding his wakeboard often being pulled behind his Dad’s boat. Brady and his parents, Olivia and Joseph Hudnell, attend the First Christian Church in Washington.
Having gone on numerous mission trips to the Georgia mountains, he has helped in
rebuilding barns and homes for local residents. Back home, Brady can be seen
helping local senior citizens with yard work and recently with snow and ice removal.
A Special Recognition Award was presented to Mary Lou Nixon. Mary Lou is
an outstanding example of a positive work ethic to anyone entering the business
world. She always has a smile to share and something good to say about everyone.
Her office has received numerous awards from Coldwell Banker National for
providing outstanding service to the community she serves. She has owned and
operated Coldwell Banker Towne Pointe Realty on the corner of Main and Pamlico
Streets for over 10 years. Her doors have always welcomed anyone with real estate concerns or questions about the community. She has been an active member
of the business community for over 30 years.
Getting to Know Your Chamber Directors
Jerry Stubberfield
I grew up in North Carolina earning my engineering
degree from NC State. The vast majority of my professional
career was spent with the Environmental Protection Agency.
Starting in Atlanta then on to Dallas my main responsibilities
included reviewing large industrial facilities for compliance
with clean air standards. In 1987, we relocated to Research
Triangle Park, serving on a workgroup developing revisions to
the Clean Air Act. Following enactment of the 1990 Clean Air
Act, my role shifted to working with the EPA’s ten Regional
offices on implementing the new law. I also served as the lead
on developing the air quality portion of EPA’s Strategic Plan
and integrating the strategic planning requirements into EPA’s
annual budget request to Congress.
My wife, Debbie, and I built our home in Bailey
Pointe in June, 2011. We have 3 sons, 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren. I’am currently serving as chair of the ICW Celebration committee and serve on the Belhaven Buccaneer Festival /
Pirates of the Pungo committee. I joined the Chamber in 2014,
initially working on revisions to the by-laws. Debbie and I are
also putting together the Chamber’s monthly newsletter. Soon I
will be heading up a committee to draft the Chamber’s Vision
Statement and 5-year Strategic Plan and engaging our members
and gaining the communities input.

& Pirates on the Pungo
May 15-17
For over 17 years the Pirates on the Pungo Racing Regatta has taken place in Belhaven. From Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, keel boats
and dinghies race pre-set courses in hopes of winning
their class.
This year, all day Saturday, May 16th, Pirates
will be taking over Belhaven, setting up an encampment on the hospital grounds. Scalawag Schools for
the kids and black powder demonstrations will surely
thrill and delight the kids. The Motley Tones, a roving band of musicians and entertainers, will be playing throughout the day and at the Buccaneer Bash in
the Wilkinson Center on Saturday night.
Join the Pirates as they parade through town
looking for captives to induct into new pirate crews.
You won’t want to miss the pirate ships, Ada
Mae and Meka II, as they sail into Belhaven and prepare to battle against the shore batteries.

Community Shred Day
The Belhaven-Pantego Rotary Club is sponsoring a community shredding event on Saturday, April 25 th. .
Recently it has come to the Board’s attention that some in the Belhaven community have expressed displeasure at the Chamber’s lack
of support for saving the hospital.
This event will give individuals and small businesses the opportunity to have their confidential documents destroyed on
site. Whether it’s documents that are no longer needed or
personal papers that need to be safely disposed of, the shredding service provides cutting-edge proprietary paper shredding technology certified to shred legal and medical documents.
The subject of saving the hospital and whether the Chamber should
take a position regarding it came up last fall during one of our
monthly meetings. We discussed the issue at length and concluded
that the Chamber should take no position with respect to the hospital.
The shredding event will take place in the Southern Bank
parking lot, from 9 am to noon on April 25th. There is no
charge for shredding but tips to the driver to help for gas
would be appreciated.
Our by-laws charge us with the following responsibility.
“….advancing the commercial, industrial, and civic interests of Belhaven and its trade center.” Further our by-laws state, “…..shall be
nonpartisan, non-sectional, nonsectarian, and shall take no part in, or
lend support to, the election or appointment of any candidate for
public office.”
The Chamber is here to serve its members whether they are pro or
con regarding this issue or any other issues.
Thank You,
Dianne Bowen
