Two
grants
totalling
$980,000
announced by State Minister for
Community
Development
Lily
D’Ambrosio will enable the Kyneton
Mechanics Institute building to be
brought back to life as a multi-use
community facility by as early as
August next year.
The funding is made up of $850,000
towards works to redevelop the
building and a further $130,000 for
landscape works to the adjacent
Mechanics Reserve, which together
with $1M from the Council, holds out
the prospect of significantly increased
community activity in Kyneton’s
centre.
The Council’s $1M alone would not
have been sufficient to restore the
Mechanics, which had been beset by
structural and damp problems, to a
fully functional state nor to enable the
quality community spaces that are now
proposed.
The areas within the building are
proposed to be flexible multiuse
spaces.
The State Government Grant has
been crucial in increasing the flexibility
toilets in the southern wing of the
building may see the Kyneton
Historical Society temporarily locate in
the front of that wing, although other
location options are being explored.
Two community group meeting rooms
are proposed for the north wing (old
Library) of the building - one in the
front half closest to Mollison St and
another which can double as a green
room for performances at the rear.
The Supper room on the South side of
the building will also be available for
hire.
The Kyneton Senior Citizens, who
formerly used the Mechanics for its
activities, has decided to remain in the
St Mary’s Hall in Hutton St.
The Mechanics Hall will be available
not only for events, performances and
concerts but also for functions such as
weddings and exhibitions and a
multitude of other uses.
The Council is yet to confirm its
pricing for hiring the rooms, but they
are likely to be similar to fees charged
at Woodend and Gisborne. For
booking enquiries contact Justin
Charleson on 54211431. For project
updates visit www.mrsc.vic.gov.au or
contact Emma Pryse 54220216.
Hats Again!
Kyneton’s Annie Smithers Bistrot and
Royal George Hotel have again been
recognised with One Chef’s Hat in the
2010 Age Good Food Guide. This is
the 5th consecutive year that Annie’s
has received a Hat and the 4th
consecutive year for the George.
and a wet August, the downpours of
the first weekend in Spring Sept 4 & 5
saw massive quantities of water
delivered into our local reservoirs.
Lauriston Reservoir drew a crowd on
the weekend of the rain, with many
locals not having seen the dam full in
over a decade.
For many children, this was the first
time they had seen water flowing over
the spillway.
The Upper Coliban (above) the
district’s biggest reservoir, empty in
2007, also started overflowing.
A year ago, Malmsbury Res was well
under 10 per cent capacity. Now it
stands at over half full. And Lake
Eppalock almost empty for years was
at 87% of capacity last week.
Look for many more boats passing
through Kyneton heading for Eppalock
in the next few months.
Leonard Cohen at the Rock
Great excitement has been generated
by the concert of legendary
international star Leonard Cohen
scheduled for Hanging Rock Reserve
for Sat Nov 20. Special guests Paul
Kelly, Clare Bowditch and Dan Sultan
will also perform at the Concert. The
concert starts at 4pm but the car park
opens at 1pm and the concert gates at
3pm. Reserved seating, general
admission and bus & car park tickets

Kyneton Baptist Church 150th
Anniversary 23-24 Oct
Baptism in the Campaspe 1860
In October 1860 the rite of Believers
Baptism was administered for the first
time in Kyneton in the flood swollen
Campaspe River, just below the
Gardens. A week later the Kyneton
Baptist Church was constituted and
the following week plans were set in
motion to build a chapel.
A simple wooden church was erected
in Piper St. The builder was Mr Joseph
Hamblin, a church member who later
manufactured pianos at his shop in
High St. The original church was later
enlarged and in 1953 replaced with the
building now owned by TJ Scott & Son.
In 1981, the Baptist Church purchased
the disu sed former Methodist
property in Ebden St. The bluestone
structure was extensively repaired and
extended before being reopened for
worship in Oct 1982. This is the
current Baptist Church centre.
The 150th Anniversary celebration
worship service will be held this
Sunday Oct 24 when the speaker will
be Rev. Alan Marr, BUV Director of
Ministries.
Other celebrations during the
weekend will include a Family Picnic in
the Botanical Gardens at 12.30pm Sat
23rd, a concert at the church at 7.30
that night, and a display of memorabilia
and a historic multi media presentation
“The Church in the Community Over
15 Decades” at 2.30pm Sun 24th. All
welcome. Details can be obtained from
the church office, 54221782 or

River Flood Damage
The flooding on Sept 4th wrought
havoc along the River. The platypus
viewing platform ended up in a willow
tree some 400 metres downstream
and the wooden walkway had its
middle section lifted up in about three
pieces and
moved 10 metres
sideways. The Council has been
working overtime to repair the
damage and has asked that people do
not offer to help at this stage as debris
is often unstable and can contain
dangerous material.
Later hand collection of plastic bags,
cans etc may be appropritate when
dangerous areas have been cleared.
The River Walk Committee is working
closely with Council and will organise
working bees and notify volunteers
through the local press at the
appropriate time.

200 hear Ross Garnaut
Doug & Jan McIver with Ross Garnaut
Economist and China expert Professor
Ross Garnaut drew an audience of 200
people when he addressed a luncheon
hosted by Kyneton U3A at the
Kyneton Bowling Club last Friday.
His address covered China’s progress
over the past 30 years and how it will
affect Australia’s future drawing on
examples from commodity prices and
climate change.
The interest generated by Ross
Garnaut’s talk was exemplified by the
variety of questions asked in the
lengthy question period and the
number of people unable to ask their
questions due to lack of time.
Big Crowds at Festival
Rotary Float Prize winning entry on
theme ‘Kyneton—Blooming with Pride’
Thousands of locals and visitors
flocked to this year’s 11 day Kyneton
Daffodil and Arts Festival. The
downpour and flooding reduced
visitors to events and open gardens in
the opening days of the Festival with
even some officials unable to get
through because of flooding but there
was solid attendance from local
residents.
The Kyneton Variety Spectacular
headlined by Keith Potger and Marcie
Jones on the night of Wed Sep 9
proved very popular, with that day also
seeing a record number of passengers
taking the new town bus service from
the station.
On Sunday Sept 12 the Festival parade
and fair drew one of the biggest
crowds ever to watch, participate in
and enjoy the parade and fair. New
attractions to parade day - stilt walkers
Ned and Nelly Narcissus, the Newham
Drummers and the giant super slide
were big hits.
“From a good sample of around 1000
Festival goers surveyed, two thirds
were visitors to the Shire making the
Festival not only a great event for local
people but a significant visitor event”
Festival Secretary Marg Dearricott
said.

Flight Experience for Scouts
White Ribbon Dinner
The Cubs and Joeys from the Kyneton
1st Scout Group were given hands on
experience with a variety of light
aircraft at Kyneton Airfield on Sat Aug
28. Kyneton Aero Club members, led
by local pilot Joanne Buckley, organised
a number of aviation activities to
introduce the next generation to the
exciting world of Aviation.
Chief Flying Instructor Mike Bourke
talked about how aircraft fly,
demonstrated the controls of the
aircraft and explained the purpose of
the instruments. A number of aircraft
owners made their aircraft available for
the Scouts to try the controls for
themselves and see how it feels to sit
in the pilot’s seat.
The Rotary Club of Kyneton will host
a combined Kyneton services club
dinner to be held on Mon Nov 22 at
the Kyneton Golf Club. Catering is by
Quintessence and bookings to Shirley
Porter on 54223016 by Nov 11. The
evening is open to all.
The theme for this year will be a
continuation of a Kyneton Zonta
initiative being a “White Ribbon”
dinner. White Ribbon Day was created
by a handful of Canadian men in 1991
on the second anniversary of one
man's massacre of fourteen women in
Montreal. They began the White
Ribbon Campaign to urge men to
speak out against violence against
women.
Radio Presenters Sought
Aero Club volunteer Ian Miller showed
the Scouts how to make their own
flying model aircraft, culminating in a
spectacular formation take off for the
test flight of the completed models.
Captain Peter Baker was kept busy all
morning as he took the Cubs flying,
three at a time, in the Kyneton Aero
Club Cessna 172 “Alpha Bravo
Whisky”. For most it was the first time
they had seen Kyneton from the air,
an d an y early nerves quickly
disappeared as they gained height and
enjoyed the new perspective.
Aero Club member Kim Yoannidis
made his hangar available for tours
where the 1940’s Tigermoth, 1950’s
Auster and 1960’s Cherokee could be
compared and admired up close.
Engines undergoing maintenance gave
some insight into the inner workings of
the flying machines.
The excitement continued when
Warren Canning took off and flew
some aerobatics in a Russian YAK-52.

Name Change for R M Begg
Competition Swimming
R M Begg Homes has changed its name
to R M Begg Kyneton Aged Care. It
was felt that it was time not only to
modernise the building, but the name
and logo. The name still retains its all
important connection to its history and
the new logo is a daffodil.
Building works are progressing well
with minor interruptions due to wet

Lady Brooks Kinder News
Georgia, Amelia and Jayla in Daffodil & Arts
Festival costumes
The Children of Lady Brooks
Kindergarten have had a wonderful
and enriching program this year. The
children have all settled in well for
Term 4 and for 90 children this will be
their last term of Kinder before they
move on to local Primary Schools.
The highlight from last Term for many
of the children (and parents) was
participating in the Daffodil & Arts
Festival parade. The children spent
many hours making and decorating
their costumes to wear on the day and
they had a great time walking down
Mollison St waving to the crowd.
Kinder representative Josie McLeish
said that the Kindergarten would not
be able to offer such a wonderful and
unique experiences at Kindergarten
without the support of many local
businesses in fundraising efforts.
“The funds that are raised go directly
back into the Kindergarten and also
give every child the opportunity of
attending extra curriculum programs
with no extra cost to families” Josie
said.
