Lisa Chesters, recently re-elected as
Federal Member for Bendigo has been
appointed as a Shadow Assistant
Minister in the new Labor Federal
Opposition line up.
Lisa will be Shadow Assistant Minister
for Rural and Regional Australia and
Shadow Assistant Minister for
Workplace Relation.
“I am honoured and excited to be
appointed to the Shadow Assistant
Minster positions” she said
“The Turnbull Government has
ignored our rural and regional
communities. Cuts to health and
education have hit rural communities
hardest and the mess Malcolm
Turnbull has made of the NBN rollout
has seen the digital divide between
our cities and the regions continue to
grow.
“The Liberals still want to cut penalty
rates and they will force young people
into exploitative internships instead of
getting real jobs.
“Labor will always be the party of jobs
and will continue to work for decent
secure jobs for all Australians” Ms
Chesters concluded.
Labor’s two party preferred vote in
the Bendigo electorate increased by
2.5% with Lisa Chesters gaining 53.7%
of the vote and her Liberal opponent
Megan Purcell 46.3%.

Water Damage being addressed
Responding to representations from
Kyneton Connections the Macedon
Ranges Shire Council has committed
to address the water damage to the
walls of the Mechanics Institute.
“There is an ongoing problem of
water leaching into the rooms at
K y ne t on M e ch an i c s In st it ut e,
particularly the meeting room. This is
caused by the box gutter and
problems with water entering from
above.
“Following consultation with the Shire
heritage advisor, new equipment and
covers to address the problem have
been manufactured in circa 1900 style.
“Paint will be scraped back on the
affected wall and ceiling to allow it to
dry. As soon as the internal surface
moisture level drops to an acceptable
level, Council will carry out whatever
repairs are necessary and then repaint.
This may be as late as November due
to the current cool temperatures and
high moisture levels in the air” Dale
Thornton MRSC Director of Assets
and Operations said.

Green waste voucher scheme
Macedon Ranges Shire Council has
introduced a new waste voucher
scheme for the disposal of green waste
at its three transfer stations.
Ratepayers will receive two free waste
vouchers in the post with their annual
rates notices distributed in August.
Each voucher can be used to dispose
of one trailer load of green waste per
year at any transfer station.
The new voucher system replaces the
former ‘Free Green Drop’ service.
Vouchers are valid from 1 September
2016 until 31 August 2017, and entitle
each user to dispose of green waste
loads up to 0.5m³ (this is equivalent to
a standard 6x4 trailer without a cage).
Charges for the disposal of green
waste will apply for larger loads,
commercial customers and people
who live outside of the Shire.

Dancing in the Dark
Want to help in the search for a cure
for brain cancer?
Want to give winter the ol' heave ho?
Want to party like it's 1999?
Then “Dancing in the Dark” is for you!
It is a relatively unknown fact that
brain cancer kills more children per
year than any other disease, and more
people under 40 than any other
cancer.
You can help to change these statistics
by joining a night of heart-racing, hiptwirling dancing at the Red Brick Hall,
in Yaldwyn St West Kyneton.
Starting at 8pm on Sat Aug 27 the
lights at the Red Brick Hall will be
down, and the music will be turned up.
So get your dancing shoes on and help
shed some light on a cure for brain
cancer.
All proceeds from the evening will go
to the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.
Tickets available: https://

Nature Strip Parking Blitz
Residents in the area of Jessie Evelyn
Crescent in the Bluestone Rise estate
have recently received a letter from
the Council advising them that any
vehicles detected on the nature strips
in the area would be issued with an
infringement notice.
In response to enquiries Anne-Louise
Lindner Council’s Manager
Community Safety said:
“ C ou n ci l r e ce i v ed n um e ro u s
complaints from residents in JessieEvelyn Crescent in Kyneton re
vehicles parking on nature strips.
Local Laws officers investigated the
complaints and spoke to many
residents. Their concerns ranged
from damage to nature strips to
safety for motorists and pedestrians,
as parked cars on nature strips may
obscure the view of drivers on the
street and pulling out of driveways.
Following the investigation, Local
Laws officers sent letters reminding
residents it was an offence to park on
nature strips under state legislation.
The letter stated Local Laws officers
would inspect the street at a later
date and issue fines to any illegally
parked vehicles.
Kyneton Connections President Eric
Dearricott said “There are many
streets in the newly developed areas
of Kyneton where residents and their
visitors park on nature strips because
the roads are too narrow to allow
safe parking on the road.
It is not fair for the Council to target
residents because of a problem that
had its origins when the plans for the
narrow roads in virtually every new
area were approved by the Council”
“Better late than never – the Council
needs to change tack and ensure that
made road surfaces in future
developments are wide enough for
cars to park on either side of the
street and another car to pass
between them” Mr Dearricott said.

Our Local Council Elections
Victorias Local Council elections are
held every leap year.
The postal vote to elect the nine
councillors of the Macedon Ranges
Shire will occur during October.
Kyneton is in West Ward which elects
three councillors.
Five candidat es have already
announced they will be contesting
West Ward but with nominations
closing in September more could yet
enter the field.
Current councillors Jennifer Anderson
and Roger Jukes Kyneton are seeking
re-election.
Councillor John Connor has advised
Kyneton Connect that he will not be
standing.
Other announced candidates are
Woodend resident Janet Pearce a
nurse and midwife at Kyneton Hospital
and partner in a general practice in
New Gisborne Luke Spielvogel a
Woodend resident farmer and small
business owner and Rosie Torr a
Kyneton resident and small business
owner.
Statements from these known
candidates follow:
Jennifer Anderson
For those of you who don’t know me,
I work part time as a General
Practitioner and at The Royal
Children’s Hospital, and have been on
Council for the last 4 years, including
one year as Mayor.
I have been appointed to both local
and state external committees, and
have a good understanding of the
planning scheme. I have continued to
promote initiatives that reduce our
carbon footprint.
I love where I live and wish to ensure
the Macedon Ranges remains a place
as beautiful as it is today, to be
enjoyed and cherished by current and
future generations.
Each decision council makes impacts
on subsequent decisions and it is
important to get the balance of
population, community health and
Page 4
wellbeing, jobs, agriculture, natural
landscapes and protecting the
environment right.
It is also important that each point of
view is listened to and respected.
If I am re-elected, I hope to continue
to improve collaboration and
communication with the community,
councillors and council staff to achieve
this balance together.
I am invested in the community of the
Macedon Ranges in every wayresident of 16 years, nurse and
midwife, parent of three now teenage
children who have grown up here,
business owner and long time
Roger Jukes
My 8 years on council, including 2
years as Mayor has given me a wealth
of knowledge about the needs and
aspirations of my community.
T hrough sound pl a nning and
management I have been a key driver
in ensuring Council is in a strong
position to be able to provide the
infrastructure and services our
growing population will need.
I have been part of this community for
26 years, I am the 'bloke' you
approach on the street who takes
your issues forward, and although I am
only one vote I always fight for you. I
have volunteered, been involved in
sporting clubs and community groups
and have a business employing 8 staff.
I will continue to lead major projects
eg. Kyneton Aquatic Centre, Recycled
water, KMI refurbishment, Equine
Strategy, Roads, Footpaths, Saleyards,
and the Kyneton Structure plan, local
and regional tourism groups, the
Agribusiness forum and the oval
lighting project.
My aim now is to see out
advancement in our Waste
Management program, securing the
future for the old Kyneton Primary
school site, planning challenges, for
commercial development and ensuring
services are in place for meeting the
needs of our children, grandchildren
and all those new residents who are
attracted to our beautiful part of the
world.
Janet Pearce
Our place. Our people. Our plans.
We live in a wonderful community and
unique environment. l think it can be
even better.
volunteer. I hope to drive our Shire in
a positive and sustainable direction
with a vision of inclusion, by listening
and working with the community it
serves.
The experience of setting up our
business reinforced that we need to
ensure all the decision making
processes of our Council are timely,
fair and understandable.
Volunteering is important. I met my
husband working in a refugee camp,
joined the MR Natural Gas Alliance in
2001, playgroup, netball committees,
and was the chairperson of the
Woodend Neighbourhood House. I
first participated in a Community
Consultation process back in 2004
(four people attended), and then
witnessed the power of community
with positive changes at Kyneton
hospital.
Completing a year long regional
leadership program, their visionregional communities “ we are the key
to their own success” inspired me. I
listen, ask questions, am independent
and committed.
Luke Spielvogel
I have lived in the Macedon Ranges for
more than a decade, on a small farm
with my wife Megan and our three
spirited little girls.
I am a commuter, farmer, small
business owner and community
advocate.
I have fought to preserve the values of
Hanging Rock and have engaged
effectively with community and
government in advocating for its
interests.
We need to better tell the Macedon
Ranges story.
Of unique townships that have resisted
the sprawl and of our environmental
values.
Of rural landscapes and rich
agricultural history that defies our
proximity to a major city.
To become smarter at seizing the
advantages that city provides.
To celebrate our diversity and heritage
while innovating and embracing new
technologies.
I’m an active Board member and
graduate of Community Leadership
Loddon Murray, and serve on local
committees and a member of a variety
of others.
My priorities once elected will be to;
encourage a collaborative & inclusive
Council culture; develop sensible
economic development solutions; and
ensure fair, transparent & consistent
planning processes.
I am passionate about empowering
community and its role in continuing to
build a vibrant Macedon Ranges.
The area is a wonderful place for
young and old, though more could be
done for both these groups. And those
in the middle, like me, are the ones
that can bring about a positive change.
I am standing for one main reason.
Accessibility.
Access to an open planning process
Access for small and creative
businesses and artists to practice, trade
and thrive.
Access to a sustainable, healthy and
varied local eco-system.
Access to services by those who are
most vulnerable.
And of course in the most practical
sense of the word, accessibility to
these services through better public
transport, roads, bike paths and
pavements that are safe and well lit.
Rosie Torr
The final installation in the Riverwalk
Sculpture Park at Quarry Reserve in
Piper Street, ‘Angel’ accompanies 11
other art pieces placed along the
Campaspe River.
Mosaic artist Kathryn Portelli has
chosen cleaved pink and grey granite,
tumbled bluestone, Blue Pearl, marble
and Corten steel to adorn the 2m high
sculpture.
“Its human scale gesture of welcome
or farewell, was motivated by the
plinth’s close proximity to the busy
road in and out of town” Kathryn says.
I live and work in Kyneton, and I am
raising my family here. I feel that
people like me are often overlooked
when it comes to local government;
the parent, the small business owner,
the volunteer, the maker and the lowincome earner.
This is why I am standing as a Greens
candidate for West Ward in the
Macedon Ranges Shire Council
elections.
Having lived in Kyneton with my young
family for the past five years I have
both seen and been a part of the
changes that have taken place in the
town.

Unsung Hero – Norma Proctor
Norma Nellie Proctor, nee Sly, was
born on the Oct 2, 1927 at
Collingwood. Her parents had an
orchard at Wattle Glen.
When Norma was 5 years old the
family moved to the Grampians. Times
were bad with the depression, but her
father found work and used to walk 3
miles to work and back each day.
Norma recalled living in the bush in a
bark hut as the happiest time and
having such fun with her two younger
brothers.
The family moved back to Melbourne
when Norma was to start secondary
school, she went on to do Secretarial
work and then did a course in Herd
Testing so it was later when she was
on a herd testing trip to South
Gippsland driving the horse and jinker,
that she met Alan Proctor who was
widowed with 4 young children. They
married and had two more children.
Norma became involved with the
community and joined the CWA and
has recently received her 60 years
badge at Trentham. She joined Red
Cross at age 17 so has over 60 years
with them as well.
In 1956, Alan purchased a garage in
Trentham so another challenge for
Norma, being involved with CWA,
School Mothers Club, Royal Institute
for the Blind Auxiliary, starting a Scout
Group so her boys could become
involved, she was also on the Auxiliary
of the Bush Nursing Hospital. She also
drove the school bus, worked for her
Church, St George Anglican, and was
on the Parish Council for many years
and remembers taking the children
singing Christmas Carols around the
houses and the Hospital.
Page 8
In the late 1970’s, they moved to the
farm in Tylden and remained there
until Alan died. Norma moved into
Kyneton in 2011.
Norma was named Citizen of the Year

Plays Celebrate 60 Years
Kyneton’s Festival of One Act Plays
will celebrate its Diamond Jubilee
during the annual Daffodil and Arts
Festival celebrating 60 years with a BeDazzled theme.
There has been massive support for
the Festival’s special birthday with a
full program of plays and monologues,
so much so that the start times for
afternoon sessions has been brought
forward to 1pm.
The Festival begins with a Gala evening
on Fri Sept 2 and continues with
afternoon and evening sessions on Sat
Sept 3 and concludes on Sun
afternoon Sept 4.
The Kyneton Festival of One Act Plays
commenced in 1957 when the Lions
Club of Kyneton combined one act
plays with music performances and a
short while after made it exclusively a
One Act Play Festival.
Kyneton Lions have continued their
involvement and the Kyneton Festival
of One Act Plays is now conducted
jointly with the Kyneton Daffodil and
Arts Festival and the Kyneton Theatre
Company.
The Bluestone Theatre in Hutton
Street, Kyneton, the traditional home
of Kyneton’s Festival of One Act Plays
since 1973, has undergone a major
refurbishment with the Festival
returning last year after a short three
year absence whilst works were
undertaken.
Bookings can be made through
www.trybooking.com/215380 or
tickets available at the door.
Kyneton Primary Fete Oct 15
This year’s Kyneton Primary School
Fete is celebrating community,
togetherness and change.
As the school looks forward to its
move in late 2017, its community
values remain strong and will be on
show for everyone to join in at the
School Fete on Sat Oct 15.
“We want to celebrate every aspect of
our community”, said Julia Boyle, 2016
fete coordinator. “We want the fete
to be inclusive and have some special
experiences for everyone to enjoy.”
There will be fun activities and
entertainment for all ages.
Try out your footy skills with local
AFL heroes, test your skill and speed
at ball throwing, whizz around in an
electric car, create a unique piece of
art in the craft tent, or enjoy a unique
experience with some farm animals.
Old favourites will also be there –
mystery jars, showbags, rides and
sausage sizzles.
“Absolutely everything at the fete is
representative of Kyneton.
We are continuing the connection
between the school and the
community,” said Julia.
“Each item and activity has been
specially selected to be fun and great
value.”
More activities and one-off
experiences will be announced in the
lead up to the Kyneton Primary School
Fete. Follow the Facebook page
Kyneton Primary School Fete 2016 to
be the first in the know.
Open Gardens during Festival
The Kyneton Daffodil & Arts Festival
will supply a feast of colour in this
year’s 21 gardens open during the
Festival, and there is the promise of
growing good food when 11 small eco
friendly edible gardens open on one
day only, Sat Sept 3.
Some gardens are within walking
distance of other town gardens but
many are drives in the countryside to
some great locations.
One is ‘Sherara’ at Lauriston where
visitors can see alpacas, daffodils in
abundance and an art photography
exhibition as well.
Among others are Rosebery Hill,
Bringalbit, New Park, Tonia Todman’s
Highbank and the new garden of
Landing Fields.
The ‘blokes’ backyard’ Teldorado in
Drummond North will open for the
last time providing a different
experience and visitors can enjoy
pizzas, nachos and a barbeque after
viewing this imaginative and eclectic
collection of backyard sculptures and
decorations.
Springhill Nursery, the Kyneton
Museum and public gardens at
Kyneton and Malmsbury Botanical
Gardens are open for inspection and
the Golden Mile in Burton Ave
promises to provide a grand display.
