Dear Readers
Wanzek has seen tremendous growth in the past three years and we
plan to continue on this path moving forward. Our goal to diversify and
grow has been driven by our expansion into Solar, Oil/Gas, Power, Rail
Bridges and working to expand our Heavy Civil capabilities. As I take
a moment to look at our continued success, I know it is fueled by our
commitment to safety, people and quality work.
Safety is the cornerstone of our business. A safe environment is a
function of good operations which includes everyone in our organization—
it starts at the top and ends with every Wanzek team member. Our goal
is zero injuries and Wanzek will continue to educate, train and give our
teams the strategies to reach this goal. In addition we will work to learn
and share safety information with others ensuring safe work environments
throughout our industry.
The growth that is happening
is due to our outstanding staff
and dedicated leaders. When working in new areas our teams become
an extension of those communities, which sets us apart from others.
Leading the expansion for Wanzek is Senior Vice President Rush Waite
in Wind, Heavy Civil, Industrial Agricultural and Bridges; Senior Vice
President Frank Rusich in Industrial, Oil/Gas and Power; and Vice
President David Masterson in Solar. This group of leaders will help take
the Wanzek team to the next level.
...the reasons for our
continued success, I
know it is fueled by our
commitment to safety,
our people and our
quality work.
Building Strong means insisting on doing quality work and Wanzek is focused on improving processes so work is done
efficiently the first time. This is why we use CII’s Best Practices. This initiative is lead by Managing Director Arnold
Jelinek. The goal is to look at current practices and create corrective action teams throughout the organization to
improve current process and set guidelines moving forward. The reward is repeat business.
I am pleased with our growth and am excited as we look at our future. The programs we have put in place
will fuel our success and I know Wanzek will continue to perform safely and grow with good people, improved
processes and thankful clients. Thank you to all Wanzek team members and customers.
Sincerely,
James G. Henry, President

Building Strong in the Bakken
Wanzek Construction is all over the Williston Basin in
western North Dakota, moving equipment and materials
and completing industrial and civil projects for regional
and global customers.
With the opening of the two new offices and additions
to its workforce, Wanzek, a MasTec company, continues
to be one of North Dakota’s largest heavy industrial
contractor in the state.
Wanzek’s commitment to work in the Bakken goes well
beyond the norm for a construction firm, says Frank
Rusich, senior vice president of the Industrial, Power,
Oil & Gas Group. Rusich notes that Wanzek recently
opened offices in Minot, N.D. and Houston, to better
serve customers in western North Dakota. Wanzek
was one of the first companies to build, equip and
furnish an employee housing complex for its own and
subcontractors’ workers.
“We’re an energy construction company that is building
stronger capabilities and capacities for all energydevelopment sectors,” Rusich said. “With the crossindustry experience of our people, an exemplary record
for on-time delivery and an intense focus on safety, we’ve
really been able to set Wanzek apart as a premier energy
construction company and a preferred contractor.”

Peaking Units |
Basin Electric Power Cooperative
Wanzek is the EPC contractor for two Basin Electric
projects scheduled to start in 2012. Both projects are
located in North Dakota – the Pioneer Generation
Station near Williston and the Lonesome Creek Station
near Watford City. As the EPC contractor for both
GE LM6000 45 megawatt peaking units, Wanzek is
responsible for complete engineering (civil, electrical and
mechanical) and the BOP work for all equipment and
controls to support the plant. The projects are scheduled
for completion in the spring of 2013.
Gas Plant Expansion | Hess Corporation
People are Wanzek’s real assets. All told, Wanzek has
more than 700 direct-hire craft and staff people working
on projects. To help retain those employees and attract
the additional qualified workers, we constructed the 179
lot housing complex, near Tioga, N.D., each with a threebedroom mobile home, yard and parking space. In addition,
there is a movie room, exercise and weight facilities and an
on-site store for use by all the complex residents.
Wanzek is completing early civil and outside boundary
limits work for the expansion of Hess’s natural
gas plant near Tioga, N.D. The work includes civil
earthwork and construction/erection of pilings and
foundations, structural steel erection and piping. The
expansion will increase the plant’s daily capacity to
250 million cubic feet of natural gas. Plans call for the
project to be completed in mid-2013.
“Activity in the Bakken provides an excellent opportunity
for Wanzek to put more than four decades of heavy
industrial and civil construction experience to work in
developing much-needed oil and gas supplies for the
nation,” he said. “We have all the expertise that regional
and global companies need to put themselves in a
position to extract the resources, and with our local
connections and dedication to safety, we can put our
customers in a stronger position to succeed.”
Transloading Facility | Plains LPG Services
Wanzek did the civil/concrete, structural steel, equipment
setting, process piping, electrical/instrumentation and
commissioning for a truck-to-rail loadout facility near
Ross, N.D. We also subcontracted and supervised
work on the facility’s control system. The facility, which
we began construction in July 2011 and finished in
November 2011, includes six truck unloading skids with
the capability to load 12 rail cars at one time.

Building Strong and
Reaching New Heights
Wanzek’s dedicated wind teams have installed more
than 5000 MW of wind generation capacity for some
of the biggest names in the industry. Currently Wanzek
is working on 14 wind farms across the country. Senior
Vice President Rush Waite credits Wanzek’s dedicated
staff to the success the company has claimed in the
wind industry. “Our staff has made the difference in
this industry. Wanzek’s wind reputation was built on
their backs and they are the reason for our growth.”
As Wanzek looks forward to the upcoming year the
focus is on expanding the wind group into other areas,
diversifying into different business lines and continuing
to internally develop systems for more accurate and
up to date reporting. Through 2012 Wanzek will
continue to expand our geographic footprint in order

to best serve our customers. Of course these goals
include continued employee development, safety
and profitability and are dependent on focusing and
utilizing Wanzek’s most valuable resources—its people.
“We are well on our way, to becoming the number one
Wind company in the United States,” states Waite. “I
can credit our team and the personal involvement of
Director of Operations, Rob Lee.”
All Wind Projects are closely watched and are run by
a team of experts. Leadership is visible at all the sites
and takes an active role in knowing the employees.
Communication between key leadership and on-site
project managers and staff keeps projects on target
for successful completion. All projects have a Senior
Project Manager that oversees two to four projects

Wind Farms are unique in many different ways.
Clients, climate, location, turbine type all have a role
in how a project is approached. On Wanzek’s current
14 projects there is one constant: success is always
measured by the safety of the workers. Wanzek
considers the best projects the safest projects. Safety
is followed closely by the quality of work and customer
satisfaction.

and the project itself has a dedicated management
team comprised of both office and field management
that keep the projects running smooth. “Our personnel
have individual talents that when combined make up
the best Wind Energy Team in the business, hands
down,” Lee said. Lee stresses that communication
is critically important when managing this number of
projects and staff.
...success is always
measured by the safety
of the workers.
— Rush Waite
Wanzek’s experience in the
wind industry has been essential to the overall
growth of the company and we look to carry our
successes into new and emerging markets. To continue
in this direction Wanzek will continue to recruit and
retain the best individuals in the construction industry.
Waite added, “The Wanzek team takes extreme pride in
what they do and that is what sets us apart.”

Building
Strong
Douglas County School District | Colorado
with
Solar Power
Wanzek continues to develop a solar portfolio. The
Building Strong vision lays the groundwork for a shared
goal between exceptional leadership to work hard and
work smart. This vision is leading Wanzek into the Solar
business. Of course, these ideas are tied to the long
term dedication to effective project management, work
quality and team safety. To ensure success Wanzek
prides itself on excellent customer service, pride of
workmanship and maintaining a safe work environment.
Wanzek has expanded to manage five large solar jobs
for sister company, Power Partners. Wanzek’s experience
and expertise will assure the projects are done safely
resulting in a quality product and a repeat customer.
The Building Strong vision lays
the groundwork for a shared goal
between exceptional leadership to
work hard and work smart.
David Masterson, Vice President of Solar Operations
knows that several team members are necessary for
the success of any project, but would like to highlight
6
Building Strong...since 1971
the importance of the Safety and Quality Director.
“Safety is the cornerstone of our business, and
following our safety processes ensures Wanzek’s high
quality standards are adhered to.”
Masterson also acknowledges the importance of the
talents the Wanzek team members have that assist in
the success of projects. “Working with preferred
engineering firms or through our own network of
engineers, allows us the capacity to design turnkey
solutions and optimized-collection systems that meet
financing and power-supply requirements,” Masterson
says. Wanzek capitalizes on their relationships
with photovoltaic-equipment providers to costeffectively procure materials. They also work closely
with our clients to properly size the facility, plan the
infrastructure, correctly construct and connect to the
electric grid.
Wanzek is set apart from its competition in the solar
industry by drawing on a deep well of experience.
These resources allow them to compete in the solar
market with the ability to complete large-scale projects
that meet all project goals.
Building Safety through Education and Training
Providing a safe place to work makes up the
cornerstone of the Wanzek culture. Our vision is Zero
Injuries. Director of Safety, Environment and Training,
T.D. (Tim) Palmer, CSP believes safety is in the hands
of every manager, supervisor and employee at Wanzek.
Regardless if you are a craft worker on a jobsite to a
member of the executive staff in the corporate office,
everyone is accountable. To ensure that happens,
Palmer’s safety team is taking a proactive approach
in providing education and training to our employees.
Wanzek has created a Corporate Education and
Training Team within the
Safety Department that will
help implement strategies
to educate, train and
prepare our employees
to stay safe and provide
the best service to our
customers.
Administrative Training Coordinator.
“As we move forward we want to
focus on training and education.”
Palmer says, “It is a great addition to
our current measures. By adding a
training team to our organization we
educate our employees on the ‘why’ of what we do.”
Wanzek’s current safety processes play a role in day
to day operations. “To maintain a Zero Injury culture it
takes 100% participation from the entire organization,”
Palmer states. Wanzek’s R4 Behavior Based Safety
Program and Supervisor Safety
Checks have laid the ground
work for success. The goal of R4
is to recognize behaviors
and eliminate unsafe acts
before they become
incidents. By having all
employees focusing on
Reviewing the process,
Recognizing the hazard,
Recommending a
course of action and Reinforcing
safe behaviors employees become more active in
identifying possible hazardous behaviors. This along
with Wanzek’s supervisor involvement and strong
safety policies and procedures has made a huge
impact for Wanzek.

The education and
training team mission is
to provide the employees
of Wanzek the training
needed to perform their duties. This will equip them
with the knowledge and skills necessary, to ensure
success in safety, quality, productivity and leadership.
The result of this effort will be projects that are
completed and in a safe manner.
This investment in safety, environmental compliance
and education shows the dedication Wanzek has
toward these critical processes. Currently the Safety
department is made up of the director, division
managers and on-site safety coordinators. The
Corporate Education and Training Team will include
a Team Manager, Craft Training Coordinator and
Wanzek is committed to achieving a zero injury
