Police raid gambling nest
By: Bertus de Bruyn
TZANEEN police swooped down and arrested 37
residents involved illegal gambling at a venue in
the Tzaneen CBD on Friday morning. R20 000 of
gamblers money was also confiscated.
The ‘Casino’ had been operating illegally
without a gambling licence and police investigations which started in November last year lead
to the bust.
The venue, situated next to the Tzaneen Crossings Shopping Mall, is advertised as a internet
entertainment cafe.
Inside, it’s a different story. There were about 38
electronic gambling machines.
The interiors of are lit by dim neon lights and
create a perfect, but dodgy, little down town
casino.
The police confiscated all the gambling machines and more than four police vans were
brought in to transport the arrested suspects. The
suspects were a diverse group comprising white
and black men, black women, and elderly residents, as well as staff members.
According to the senior manager of law enforcement of the police, Philly Masogo, the illegal
gamblers will pay an admission of guilt fine at the
scene, which is normally between R200 and R60.
The employee’s will however stay in custody, and
will appear in court
soon.
According to Masogo,
in cases like these, it is
difficult to trace the owner of the business, but
they will do anything in
their power to find and
arrest him.
They also confiscated

2 killed, 6 injured in pile up accident
TWO people were killed and six injured in an
accident involving four vehicles and a truck on
the Letsitele Nkambako road on Saturday
night.
According to the Letsitele police spokesperson, Constable Reoh Mabunda, the accident occurred at 18:00 on the bridge near
Ngwamezi River when the driver of the first
vehicle reduced speed thinking there was a
speed hump on the road.
A second vehicle tried to overtake the first,
and hit a mirror of a truck in the oncoming lane,
before swerving out to the right and leaving the
road.
An Isuzu behind the second vehicle crashed
into the first car which was slowing down for an
apparent speed bump. The vehicle behind the
Isuzu then crashed into the oncoming truck.
'The two occupants of the Isuzu, aged
between 25 and 30 were certified dead on the
scene,' said Mabunda.
Mabunda urged motorists to be extra careful
on that road as seven people lost lives on the
same road the last two years.
links: Chris Barkhuizen Thabazimbi, Limpopo tesourier; prof Carolina Koornhof, president AHI;
Gerrit van der Veen Mokopane, Limpopo voorsitter; Chris Vermeulen Bela Bela, Limpopo
ondervoorsitter. Agter: Andy Goetsch Mokopane; Martiens van Staden, Naboomspruit; Wiets
Botes Waterberg (Modimolle); Lukas Groenewald, Groter Tzaneen; Pieter Pelser Lephalale.
Afwesig met verskoning: Manie Kriel Phalaborwa; Cecile de Kock Hoedspruit.
Nuwe bestuur gekies
1. Die problematiek van ondoeltreffende
munisipaliteite kan opgelos word deur
opleiding van en kontinuiteit onder munisipale
amptenare en raadslede te verkry. Die AHI
beskik oor 'n plaaslike ekonomiese ontwikkelingslessenaar wat munisipaliteite se volwassenheidsvlak volgens 'n wêreldbekende
model evalueer endan oplossings voorstel.
nou nodiger as ooit.
4. Tolpadkoste styg almaardeur. Dit is 'n
wurgtou vir besighede.
5. Korporatiewe besighede verdring die klein
sakeman deur ekonomie van skaal te gebruik,
sonder dat daar egter sosiale investering plaaslik plaasvind. Geld word uit Limpopo dorpe
onttrek, maar daar word geen sigbare sosiale
teenprestasie gelewer nie.
7. Basiese gesondheidsdienste in die vorm
van klinieke is net in naam daar. Hulle gaan
gebuk onder 'n kroniese tekort aan voorraad,
blykbaar omdat daar onduidelikheid is wie se
verantwoordelikheid dit eintlik is.
Grypdiewe hier
MOTORISTE word gewaarsku dat daar ‘n
moontlike sindikaat betrokke is op die hoek
van Danie Joubert- en Skirvingstraat.
Rowers druk hulle hande deur oop motor
vensters en probeer juwele afruk van vroulike
bestuurders. Daarna vlug hulle.
Letaba Herald is bewus van twee sulke
voorvalle.
Wees versigtig en hou jou motor vensters
toe.

Dup arrested for
weapons, hunting
A HOEDSPRUIT police commander who’s
part of the Limpopo stock theft unit appeared
in the Phalaborwa Magistrate's Court on
Thursday in connection with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
The 50-year-old commander, Lieutenant
Chris du Plessis was arrested at house in the
Maake area on Tuesday by the Hawks following information received that he was involved in illegal hunting.
The Hawks spokesperson, Captain Paul
Ramaloko said three additional charges of
theft, illegal possession of wild animal
products, and contravention of the Environmental Management Act were added to the
original charges.
According to the police, further investig-
ations revealed that he allegedly booked nine
rifles out of the Phalaborwa police station in
2007, saying he was taking them to Hoedspruit.
"The rifles have not arrived in Hoedspruit
and for that he is charged further with theft."
Police found wild animal skins and skulls at
his home.
It is alleged Du Plessis worked as a hunting
outfitter after hours, organised hunting trips
and charged hunters a fee.
Ramaloko said Du Plessis would then share
the proceeds with game farm owners, and thus
contravened the Environment Management
Act
Du Plessis is expected to appear again in the
Phalaborwa Magistrate's Court on Friday.

‘N’ nommerplate
verval 1 Julie
vanjaar.
Verander jou nommerplaat

’Ons is meer as dankbaar.
nou baie opgewonde.’
dis wonderlik’.
Die berugte pad was telkens in die nuus
nadat die tenderproses weens ‘n hofsaak weer
van voor af moes plaasvind.
Daar was aangevoer dat die tenderproses
verkeerdelik toegeken is.
daar spreek boekdele.
Volgens ‘n Quality Plant Hire woordvoerder
gesteel.
gewoonlik stop.
Letabarivier, waar ‘n luislang of ‘n krokodil ook

Chiq Classiq success
prompts an encore
THE success of the performance of the first
Chiq Classiq recital concert in March, and the
public demand to have the concert repeated,
prompted the producers to repeat the concert
in June this year.
The combined local talents of Marius Botha
on the flute, Ingrid Linde on the piano and
Righard Linde as tenor proves to be an extraordinary successful combination.
Positive comments and praise from younger,
teenaged and mature audience members support the notion that the three performers are at
the top of their game.
The trio is motivated to present professional
'classical' music productions in Tzaneen and
surrounds, where such concerts have been
scarce in the last few years - after the conclusion of classical performances at The
Coach House.
The Chiq Classiq concert also gives music
students in the area the opportunity to experience the professional side of classical
music performance, and to see their teachers
in the performance situation.
’I think it is every music teacher's responsibility to keep on performing and participating in Eisteddfods, examinations and
competitions so you never lose contact with
the challenges and fears of your students,’
explains Marius Botha, producer of the Chiq
Classiq Concerts.
The first Chiq Classiq concert is presented as
a formal classical recital. The seemingly effortless, though sensitive, accompaniment of
Inrid Linde, provides an excellent backdrop
for the voice and the flute.
The performers have the ability to bring the
music of Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Donizetti,
Bizet, Rutter, Mozart, Poulenc and Faure to
life.
Botha motivates: ’Beautiful music will always be beautiful, no matter which genre it
belongs to, and exceptional skill is always
appreciated. It is always a brilliant experience
to create music with other proficient musicians. There is just an amazing 'magic'
which happen between performers and the
audience when live music is performed
well.’
Original flute compositions from the desk of
Marius Botha, publishing under the pseudonym 'Miro', is also performed during the
concert. Botha recently achieved a number of
awards for his compositions, not only at the
local Tzaneen Eisteddfod, but also at the
National Eisteddfod Academy in Johannesburg.
After having presented a few very successful
productions - including Off The Couch and
Jazz Matazz in The Teatro, at Merensky High
School - Mari Weber, the mastermind behind
the existence of the Teatro, expresses confidence that audiences are bound to enjoy this
Chiq Classiq concert and the other concerts
planned for the future.

Gedugte kunstenaars soos Dewald Gouws,

se mees gewilde liedjie is sekerlik ’His eye is on
the sparrow’.
Sibongile Sibeko was die SAUK

IN THIS article I deal with an example where a
second disciplinary hearing dealing with the
same disciplinary charges will be fair.
It will depend on the circumstances of the
case. The basic rule is that an employee cannot
be subjected to another enquiry if a first
enquiry has acquitted the employee.
The double jeopardy rule therefor implies
that a second enquiry, if it deals with the same
charges and facts, would normally be unfair especially if the second enquiry results in the
employee's dismissal.
The facts of Solidarity obo Pienaar / Harmony
Gold Mine Ltd (2011) 20 CCMA 7.22.2 is an
example of where a CCMA commissioner
concluded that a second disciplinary enquiry
on the same charges was in fact fair under the
circumstances.
The applicant, a security unit leader, was
involved in an incident relating to a search of
Child protection in focus
’ALL adults who live with children who are not their own should be
registered,’ says Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini.
She was speaking at a ceremony to mark the end of Child Protection
Week in Lephepane Village on Sunday.
’We have people who take care of orphaned children in their homes
and in churches, but who are not registered as child-caring institutions.
This makes it difficult to intervene when these children are abused,’ she
says.
The Minister was accompanied by Deputy Minister of Social Development Maria Ntuli, Deputy Minister of Police Maggie Sotyu, Deputy
Minister of Women, Children and People with disabilities Hendrietta
Bogopane-Zulu, and Premier Cassel Mathale.
In her address, the Minister urged parents to help government to make
homes, schools, churches and playgrounds safer places for children.
’You have a responsibility to make your homes, local schools,
churches and playgrounds safer places for your children. You have the
responsibility to cut down bushes where criminals hide,’ she said
She said it was very important for children to know their rights and
what do to when those rights are infringed upon.
’You must report adults who demand sex from you. Tell the police,
social worker or nurse at the clinic, and even if you still don't get help,
call the presidential hotline,’ she said.
Dlamini said women have the right to wear mini-skirts without fear of
being raped and also complained about the high number of taverns in
the area.
Grade 12 learner Magdeline Bvuma said poverty and lack of
education was one of the reasons behind child abuse.
’Most of the adults who abuse children are school-dropouts. We also
have parents who pressurise their daughters to sleep with older men
because the family desperately needs money to buy groceries,’ she
said.
The event ended with the signing of a pledge by the minister and
dignitaries, in which they committed to protect
and uphold the rights of women, children and
people living with disabilities.
Child Protection Week, which started on
May 27, is commemorated in the country
annually to raise awareness around the rights of
children as articulated in the Children's Act of
2005. The campaign that began in 1997 also
aims to mobilise all sectors of society and
communities in the effort of ensuring care and
protection for children.
The event was attended by thousands of
caregivers, parents and school children who
were treated to dance, choral music, poetry
and drama performances.
certain people outside the plant. This incident
led to a strike and the incident was investigated.
The incident arose when the security guard
disobeyed an instruction not to search employees outside the plant.
The employee was charged with abusing his
position by stopping and searching persons that
had already been searched, that he used racist
or abusive language and that he threatened
violence. His dismissal was based on the first
and third of these charges.
The first disciplinary enquiry found the employee not guilty of all three disciplinary
charges levelled against him. But then he again
received a notice to attend a disciplinary
enquiry. This time around the employee was
found guilty on two of the three charges and he
was dismissed.
On the facts of the case, the commissioner
concluded that the employee was indeed guilty
of the first charge (abuse of position).
The employer had also discharged the onus
of proving that the dismissal was fair. There was
also sufficient evidence to prove that the employee was guilty of the offence of threatening
violence - the employee had effectively admitted making threatening remarks.
The presiding commissioner concluded that
the chairperson of the first enquiry did not
consider the facts properly and that he improperly referred to information or evidence
that he obtained outside the enquiry.
This meant that he relied on information that
was not tested by the employer in the enquiry
itself. This information favoured the employee
while prejudicing the employer and the first
enquiry effectively deprived the employer from
responding to this evidence.
The second enquiry was fair on all procedural aspects. No new evidence was introduced in the second enquiry which would
have given the employer the unfair opportunity
to "have a second bite at the cherry" and the
employee was therefore not prejudiced by this
second enquiry. The charges were also immediately brought against the employee again.
In effect it appears that the commissioner found
that the double jeopardy rule did not apply as
the employee was acquitted by the first enquiry
on evidence that neither the employer nor the
employee introduced into the proceedings.
This meant that it was fair for the employer to
hold a second enquiry.

MHS wins six-a-side
MERENSKY High School hosted the CocaCola six-a-side soccer challenge on Saturday.
Teams from King’s Court, Meridian, Rainbow, Blue Mountain, Merensky and Southern
Cross competed in the challenge sponsored
Coca-Cola Fortune.
Six-a-side rules applied, where each team
had to play six games with only six players on
a side for 10 minutes, thus deciding the teams
who went through to the semi-finals.
HOSTEL BOYS: Merensky High School recently announced the hostel prefects for 2013-2014.
Front from left: Dylan Luis, Gilson Nkuna, Armand Voster and Jacques Costen. Back: Jason
Moore, Phillip Nel, Lehan Nel, Tony Botha and Rico Pretorius.
TOP TIEN: Merensky Hoërskool se top tien Graad 11 leerlinge is onlangs aangekondig. Voor van

Merensky High School wishes to thank the
soccer union referees, the teams who travelled
far to compete in the challenge, the Moosa
family for their input and Coca-Cola Fortune
for sponsoring caps, balls and T-shirts.
Augustus in Hartenbos plaasvind.
suksesvol beredeneer.
Hoërskool
Merensky is baie trots op
hierdie twee orators,
en sien met verwagting uit na hulle
aanslag om die nasionale redenaarstitel
in Hartenbos.
HARTENBOS ROEP: Clarissa Esterhuizen en
Michelle Stevens van Hoërskool Merensky
gaan Limpopo verteenwoordig in die finale
ronde van die ATKV redenaars kompetisie.
Hulle was beide wenners in hulle kategorieë
in die semi-finaal by PHS Vrydag.

The way you see yourself
By Dr Peter Mabunda
THE way you view or picture yourself is called
your self-image.
Self-image is a mental picture or image that
you have of yourself.
Self-image has to do with how you view your
body, your abilities, talents and your personality. You either have a favourable image of
yourself which is also called a positive selfimage or you may have a poor image of
yourself which is called a negative self-image.
Many young people, especially teenagers,
struggle with their self-image. They suffer from
poor self-image.
A poor self-image affects young people in
many areas of their lives. Some learners perform below their abilities at school because of
this problem. Others fail to set and achieve
their life goals. Others fail to live happy and
satisfying lives.
Again some cannot maintain healthy relationships or make a contribution to society
because of the same problem.
The way you see yourself will determine to a
large extent how far you will be able to go in
life. It will determine whether you will be
successful or not, whether you will be able to
explore and venture into unknown terrain and
exploit opportunities when you see them or
not.
It will also determine whether you will be
able to release your God-given talents and
abilities to serve humanity or not.
A negative self-image is therefore a wall
which seeks to block you on your way to selfactualisation and self-satisfaction.
A negative self-image stems from daily experiences of young people. Children who are
abused and those who come from families
which do not appreciate them develop poor
images of themselves.
Parents should therefore be very careful
about how they treat children as well as what
they consistently say to them.
For example, parents should avoid telling
their children that they are good for nothing
because children believe what parents say and
will carry this everywhere they go.
When you read the story of creation the
Bible makes it abundantly clear that man was
created in the image of God. God did not make
anyone by mistake. We are all special, unique
and irreplaceable.
God is happy and pleased with who we are.
We do not owe anyone any explanation about
who we are and why we are the way we are.
If you are suffering from a poor self-image it
is time to work on it. How do you improve your
self-image? Look at the following suggestions:
1. Accept yourself-image?
2. Learn to love yourself first before you love
others.
3. Make positive statements about yourself
every day.
4. Avoid unnecessary competition with others, your biggest competitor is yourself.
5. Take care of yourself.
6. Don’t worry, be happy.
7. Put a smile on your face and laugh as often
as possible.
8. Be friendly.
9. Engage in physical exercise regularly.
10. Set and strive to achieve you life goals.
11. Feed on the positives.
12. Do not dwell on you hurtful past.

LETABA HERALD - Friday 7 June 2013
SKOLENUUS
Vossies wen FNB Classic Clashes
druk. Hulle verloor met 20 - 46. Die o/15Bspan verloor met 0 - 36.
Die O/16A- en B-spanne wat verlede jaar
geklop is deur PHS neem albei soete wraak.
Die O/16A-span oorheers voor en val
pragtig aan met teenaanvalle om met 23 - 5 te
wen. Die B-span wen ook hulle wedstryd met
29 - 17.
nie.
Hierna breek die damwal! Eers is dit die
plaasvervanger, vleuel Surprice Mathebula,
Halftyd is
PHS kry egter

Vossie hokkie vaar
beter teen Pieties
VOSSIE hokkie het die afgelope naweek te
staan gekom teen die Hoërskool Pietersburg
wat bekend is as 'n uitstekende hokkieskool.
verlede is aansienlik verklein.
Hiermee het die Vossies duidelik gemaak
dat daar met verwagting uitgesien kan word
na die toekomstige kragmetings.
Beide die meisies en seuns 1ste spanne het
baie goed begin en gedurende die eerstehelfte
uitstekende hokkie gespeel.
2-1.
Meisies: Die o/15B-span speel gelykop teen

Moosa, Vermeulen win class
MOHAMMED Moosa and his co-driver of
Team Total, won their class during the
Toyota Gauteng Rally this weekend.
The Tzaneen rally ace and his co-driver
Andre Vermeulen entered the third round of
the 2013 South African National Rally Championship serious contenders for the Class
victory.
On day one of the two-day and ten-stage
event, Moosa put his Toyota Auris S2000 at
the top of the Class S2000 Challenge leader
board, lying 6th overall, less than 1minute 30
seconds off the days' leader, Jan Habig's,
time. This was after two wrong slots that cost
the team just over a minute.
Day two saw Moosa and Vermeulen slowly
increasing their overnight lead, with Moosa
showing the speed he has promised all season
thus far.
The team eventually powered to a commendable sixth position overall, amongst the
newer and more powerful factory-backed
rally teams and won the Class S2000 Challenge Class.
But not without last minute drama.
On the last stage of day two, a misheard
pace note caused the team to have a spectacular accident that led the car to roll over
two and a half time leaving it lying on its
side.
Quick work by marshals to right the car
allowed Moosa and Vermeulen to finish the
stage albeit with a car that looked fit to be in a
scrap yard.
The team were lucky that their margin going
into the final stage was over one and a half
minutes and the time lost still allowed them to
win the class by 10 seconds.
’This event is a challenge, and it caught
many crews out,’ said Moosa.
Moosa's next rally outing on the national
calendar will be the Volkswagen Rally in Port
Elizabeth, Eastern Cape July 19 and 20.

SLC excell in derby
STANFORD Lake College participated in a sporting derby in
Benoni recently against St. Dunstan’s College.
The first rugby team shattered
their opponents from Benoni with
a 64-0 win.
The second rugby team showed
that they are capable of scoring
great tries, with a 38-12 win.
The U/15 rugby team set the
tone with some excellent scrumming and rucking by the forwards
and won 24-12.
Ten SLC Mountain Bikers competed against St Dunstan’s at
Central Park Trails in Johannesburg during the derby.
The learners enjoyed the fast,
flowing single track which constituted about 70% of the 35km
race.
Josh Selfe from SLC was the
overall winner.
The first netball team had to
defend their 2012 victory but
unfortunately the team from St.
Dunstan’ s had outstanding
shooting accuracy and managed
to pull away in the second half.
Amber de Villiers and Lalla
Shipalana played exceptionally
well and put a huge amount of
pressure on their shooters and
made some excellent interceptions.
The second netball team’s
game was tight and St. Dunstan’s
put on a great performance,
however, Stanford held onto their
lead and finished with a 15-14
win.
The U/17 netball team started
off well and the game was pretty
even, but St. Dunstan’s took the
lead in the second half, winning
the game.
The U/15 netball team has been
unstoppable over the last few
weeks and ended their game as
the clear winners. Katherine
Gardiner demonstrated some excellent shooting and Somisa
Shingwenyana was solid in defence.
The U/14A netball team put up
a good fight and played well as a
team, however, in the last few
minutes, St. Dunstan’s managed
to score to take them into the lead
by one goal.
In the U14B’s second match of
the season, the game was very
even, however, the strength of St.
Dunstan’s shooting allowed them
to take control and end victorious.
SLC’s hockey teams also competed again St Dunstan's during
the derby.
The first team boys lost 3-2 to a
good St Dunstan squad.
The first team girls completely
dominated the game through-out

Great SLC hockey results
THE Stanford Lake College
hockey teams competed again St

The first team boys lost 3-2 to a
good St Dunstan squad.
The first team girls completely
dominated the game through-out
and won 3-0.
The second team boys won 20. The second team girls won 60.
The U15 boys team won 4-0.
THE Stanford Lake College debating club
faced their counterparts from St Dunstan's
College for the first time in the history of this
derby.
Khensani de Klerk (captain), Rhanda Mongwe, and Khanya Nkambule debated the topic:
’This house would make the names and addresses of convicted paedophiles publically
available.’
The debate was very interesting and fiercely
contested, and drew crowds to the beautiful St
Dunstan's chapel.
It is notable that the adjudicator took over
half an hour to work out her scores and in the
end the debate was decided by one point
going to the hosts.
This is a noteworthy achievement for the
SLC debaters to go head to head with a team
who are two time champions of the Johannesburg league.
