Returning Rooster: Former Kiwis prop Peter Brown is back at Eden Park for the first time since the 1988 Rugby League World Cup final.

League son returns
By TUREI MACKEY
PLAYING on the hallowed ground
of Eden Park is exceptional for any
sportsman. It’s even rarer for a
rugby league player.
But Peter Brown has the distinction of playing his code at the
famous rugby union stadium.
The former Te Atatu Rooster was
one of the starting front-rowers for
the Kiwis in the 1988 Rugby League
World Cup final against Australia –
the only time league has been
played at Eden Park.
The 48-year-old will return on
November 6 to watch the Kiwis take
on Australia.
The night will act as a Four
Nations double-header with England playing Papua New Guinea
before the transtasman clash.
It’s the first international event
at the revamped venue. Brown
hasn’t been to a match at Eden Park
since the 1988 world cup final.
‘‘I don’t really follow union or
cricket so I basically had no reason
to go there in the past,’’ he says.
‘‘But the stadium certainly
captures your eye so hopefully there
is a big crowd on the night.’’
Brown is honest about the 25-12
loss to the Aussies in 1988.
‘‘They kicked our butts but that
wasn’t unusual back in those days.
‘‘We just weren’t on our game and
I think the occasion got to some of
the boys a bit.’’
The Kiwis were seen as real contenders to Australia’s crown in the
late 80s but a raft of player changes
brought an end to that dream.
‘‘Around 1986 when I made the
side there was an established team
with guys like Mark Graham, the
Sorenson brothers and Olsen Filipaina.
‘‘By 1987 they were starting to
retire so we had a team of young
guys like Gary Freeman, Mark Horo
and the Iro brothers,’’ he says.
Brown hopes the modern-day
Kiwis will level the score against
the Kangaroos but knows it will be
just as tough as it was in his day.
‘‘We will be stronger in the
forwards but Australia will be tough
since they produce elite sides all the
time.’’

talent for writing have
seen a 12-year-old girl
beat adults to first prize
in an essay contest.
Green Bay School
student Helen Wu’s
essay, The Waitakere
Volcano, took first prize
in the student historical
research category as well
as overall best essay in
the recent JT Diamond
writing competition.
It beat about 30
entries from student and
adult writers.
Helen picked the topic
after reading how the

million years ago.
Her essay describes
areas
where
the
volcano’s effects are visible today like Piha’s
Lion Rock. At 2000
words long, Helen says
it’s one of the biggest
pieces she’s ever written.
‘‘The teachers helped
me craft it, and the
librarian helped me with
research. I do find volcanoes quite interesting,’’ she says.
Diamond winner: Helen Wu of Green Bay School is only 12 but she took the top prize in the JT Diamond Essay
competition, beating many adult writers as well as other students.

Making After the Waterfall
involved a shower scene which
turned out to be a chilly
experience.
‘‘We were at this house in
Piha and the owners had gone
away and turned the hot water
off so it was absolutely freezing
the whole time,’’ Mr Starr
says.
Director Simone Horrocks
says she was impressed by Mr
Starr and how far he
immersed himself in the role.
He grew a beard for the part
and relished the anonymity it
gave him.
But Mr Starr says he doesn’t
want to sound ungrateful for
his roles on Outrageous Fortune and the support from
fans.
‘‘It’s great to be part of a
show with an audience like
that.’’
There will be a free

It is a thank you from the
filmmakers to the Piha
residents who supported making the movie. Free tickets are

Antony Starr’s memories of
shooting his first lead in a feature film include being cold
and wet.
He says starring in After the
Waterfall was a fantastic
experience despite this.
The 35-year-old plays John
Drean, a father grieving the
disappearance of his four-yearold daughter Pearl.
The movie will be released
in Rialto and Bridgeway
Cinemas on November 4.
Mr Starr says he didn’t feel
too much pressure going into
the film which was shot in five
weeks in various locations
around west Auckland including Piha and New Lynn.
He squeezed it in between
filming seasons five and six of
the television series Outrageous Fortune in which he plays
twins Van and Jethro West.
‘‘Apparently it takes a

Leah brings her smile Guy Fawkes ban in parks
to Red Nose campaign
By CATHERINE HEALY
Do you remember the
Red Nose Day song?
Leah Hickey is only 13
but she knows all of the
words to You Make the
Whole World Smile,
which was a number one
hit back in 1992.
Leah has spina bifida
and receives support
from Cure Kids – the
organisation that is
bringing back Red Nose
Day on November 19.
The Swanson School
student was recently
invited to be part of
Anika Moa’s recording of
the song for the 2010
campaign.
‘‘I went with Cure Kids
ambassadors to meet
Anika Moa and record a
video for Red Nose Day
with her. It was a long
day but it was cool. We
had to wear a red nose
and dance with Anika, it
was a lot of fun. I loved
being a part of the day
and meeting Anika and
her band.’’
Leah lives in Massey
and was born with a
lump on her spine. Tests
revealed she had spina
bifida, a birth defect
which occurs when the
spinal
cord
doesn’t
develop properly. She
also had a heart defect
and had an operation at
just 11 months old to fix
it.

Cure Kids – previously
known as the Child

more than 30 years ago
to address the lack of research into life-threatening childhood illnesses
in New Zealand.
‘‘I have met so many
lovely and caring people
who have helped Cure
Kids raise money for

sick kids to not be sick,’’
Leah says. ‘‘We have
become like a family, the
staff at Cure Kids and all
the other ambassadors
and their families are
very special.’’
Red Nose Day was
launched in New Zealand in 1989 and raised
money for research into

Orchard hosts workshop
If you want to live a sustainable
lifestyle but don’t know where to begin
try visiting the Lucinda Place Community Orchard Workshop this
Sunday.
Glen Eden stream ranger Tony

will be a hands-on way for the community to learn how to be more self

‘‘There’ll be lots of information on
hand about sustainable living and lots
of free food.’’
He says it’s easier than people think
to live sustainably.
‘‘We wanted to do this event to show
people how easy it was and we take
you through the process step-by-step.’’

Young scribes speed date
to learn authors’ methods
By CATHERINE HEALY
Four of Bruce McLaren Intermediate’s most talented scribes
spent last Friday ‘‘speed dating’’
authors.
Estee
Wrightson-Beresford,
Grace Burton-McKeich, Molly
Faussett-O’Connor and Rhiannon
Leader were selected to attend the
event by teacher Geoff Emmitt.
The year 7 and 8 students were
among a group of 50 students
from 10 schools across Auckland
invited to the event.
It was organised by the New
Zealand Book Council and held at
the National Library’s new Auckland Centre in Parnell.
Auckland writers Paula Green,
Lyn Kriegler, Brian Falkner, Jennifer Beck, Selina Tusitala-Marsh
and John Parker each had 20
minutes of coaching time with the
students. They covered everything
from poetry to story topics.
‘‘Hopefully it will reinforce the
excitement they have for writing
and open their eyes to different
styles,’’ Mr Emmitt says. ‘‘It’s an
opportunity to talk to people who
are making a living from writing.
It shows there is a purpose to it.’’
Molly Faussett-O’Connor, 13,
was enthusiastic about the day
out. ‘‘I’ve always wanted to be a
journalist and write stuff in the
paper,’’ she says.
Book Council chief executive
Noel Murphy says previous events
had proven fun and stimulating
for the students involved.
‘‘This kind of contact with
authors is extremely motivating
for children to do more creative
writing, and to explore and enjoy
more in their reading,’’ Mr Murphy says.
COSMETICS WAREHOUSE SALE
LOCATION: 40B MORRIN ROAD, MT WELLINGTON
‘‘We cover preparing the ground,
composting, mulching and companion
planting,’’ Mr Phillips says.
Eight types of trees will be planted
at the orchard workshops including
macadamia and plum trees.
Mr Phillips says the family friendly
event will also feature live music, free
food and a weta hotel.
The weta hotel consists of small
habitats made from recycled materials
which provide ideal conditions for
wetas.
It aims to educate people about the
insects and show them that wetas
aren’t scary.
‘‘Waicare will also talk about water
testing and the creatures that live in
the stream,’’ Mr Phillips says.
The workshop will run from 10am to
1pm this Sunday.
COLLECTORS NEEDED!
We are looking for ‘angels’ to help collect over the three days of our
appeal, Friday 12, Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 November.
From Warkworth to Waiuku, Waitakere to Waiheke Island – there is
bound to be a collection site near you.
You can even dress in costume if you would like!
The donations raised from Angels for Animals 2010 will go towards
our work by developing satellite services throughout the Auckland
region.
If you would like to be involved in this year’s SPCA Auckland street
appeal, just go to the website www.spca.org.nz\angels where you

Coyote-based motor transforms FPV
Australia’s newest V8
is also one of the
finest, writes PAUL
OWEN.
Ford Australia was
dithering about building
a new V8 engine for the
Falcon, so niche performance brand, Ford Per-
formance Vehicles, went
ahead and built one anyway. The result of the
$A40 million project is a
stunning new supercharged 5.0litre V8
engine that is superior in
every way possible to the
motor it replaces – the
5.4 that Ford was forced
to quit making when it
could no longer meet new
emission rules.
‘‘Forty-three per cent
of the components are
made in Australia,’’ says
FPV general manager,
Rod Barrett, as he lifts

up the bonnet of the new
GT sports-sedan to display the new Boss 335,
‘‘and the engine is 100
percent assembled here
in a factory located a
block to the north of here
(FPVs head office in
Campbellfield,
Melbourne).’’
Compare this state-oforigin with that of the
6.2 litre Chevy LS3 V8
used by FPVs arch-rival,
HSV, which is imported
fully built up from North
America.
FPV’s new engine was
developed using the new
5.0 litre Coyote V8 that
Ford developed for the
Mustang as a starting
point, but essentially
only retains the Mustang
mover’s basic all-alloy
architecture and the layout of the doubleoverhead-cam,
fourvalves-per-cylinder
valvetrain. Just about
everything inside has
been
revised
and
changed, then capped by
a new induction system
headlined by the supercharger developed and
made by Harrop Engineering in Melbourne.
The result is an engine
that is nearly 50kg
lighter than the 5.4 it
replaces, yet delivers
more power and torque
over a wider rev range,
and uses less fuel in the
process. Besides meeting
the new Euro 4 emission
targets demanded by
Australian Design Rules
for engines built after
June 1, 2010, the real
achievement of this new
V8 is the more compact
and efficient packaging.
As Barratt says: ‘‘It
sure fits in the car better
now.’’
By that he means it
can be mounted quite a
bit lower than the old
5.4, which used a longstroke cast-iron cylinder
block that suited Ford’s
original intentions to use
it in large SUVs and
pick-up trucks. Heading
north from the FPV head
office into twisting roads
that traverse the Dandenong
Ranges,
its
immediately apparent
what that lighter, lower
engine does to improve
the GT’s handling. Such
is the immediate response of the car to the
tiller, this could be some
compact little hot-hatchback that we’re driving.
One big change FPV
had to make to the Mustang V8 was the addition
of a drive to the crankshaft to power the oil
pump for a Falcon’s
hydraulically-assisted
steering
(Mustang’s
wheel is electricallyassisted).
It ensures the GTs
wheel retains the road
feel that makes Aussie
V8 sports-saloons such
inspiring cars to drive.
Combine this quality
to the more evenly-distributed chassis balance
the
lighter
engine
permits, the supple ride
quality that FPVs are
valued for, and sticky
road-holding that’ll generate more than 1g of lateral force before the wellsorted stability control
chimes in to rescue the
tyres, and you have an
Aussie
sports-saloon
that’s capable of dishing
out servings of driving
pleasure as generous as
any German alternative.
If this is a poorer mans
Audi RS5 or BMW M3, it
certainly doesn’t sound
that way from the
driver’s seat. A flap
opens in the GT’s
exhaust when throttle
pressure
dictates,
allowing the Coyotederived engine to really
growl. The trademark
rumble of the V8 can
then be heard in all its
glory, as until the flap
opens the endearing
whine of the supercharger dominates the
engine noises heard
inside the cabin.
NZ prices have yet to
be announced for the
new V8-powered FPVs,
but Australian marketing positions the GS
models at several thousands less than the F6
models. A supercharged
V8 for less than a turbosix? Now there’s a proposition that many fans of
Aussie muscle cars will
find hard to resist.
Road-user charge
madness for MIni
Easily the most fuel and cost efficient car on the AA
Energywise Rally the other week, was the diesel
Mini entered by BMW New Zealand.
So why didn’t it win overall? It didn’t because of
road user charges (RUCs). The frugal little Mini’s
drivers had pay up more for RUCs to cover the
Auckland-Wellington-Auckland drive than they did
for fuel. Surely proof that we’re actively discouraged
from driving some of the cleanest, most frugal cars
by this arcane system.

Home&garden
November garden guide MITSUBISHI H.I INVERTER
Advertising Feature
The November garden sees the
softness of spring rapidly fading,
and luxuriant summer growth
starting to take over.
Vegies to sow in November
Pumpkin Buttercup: Buttercup
is the compact pumpkin for the
small family. Bred more than 80
years ago, Buttercup has won
awards for its sweet, dry flesh and
its good colour. A thin green outer
shell protects the contrasting
bright orange interior. Unlike
most other pumpkins, Buttercup
grows on a compact plant that
wont attempt to take over the
entire garden. Sow three or four
seeds into sunny mounds and,
after germination, keep only the
two strongest plants.
Sage (pictured): Sage is a mem-
ber of the large salvia family,
many of which are popular ornamentals. But the sage that’s found
in Yates seed range is grown for
its ability to add flavour in the
kitchen, for its healing properties
and for its natural germ-killing
properties. An infusion of sage
helps reduce the symptoms of
colds and the flowers and aromatic leaves are said to attract
good insects like pollinating bees
and repel some of the nasties.
Feed in November
Feed young tomatoes as they
are growing. Thrive Flower &
Fruit is a good choice as its high in
potassium, which helps build disease resistance. But, because
Thrive Flower & Fruits is applied
as a liquid, it needs to be re-
applied every couple of weeks.
Sprinkle Dynamic Lifter pellets
around the plants as well to
supply longer-lasting goodness.
Prune in November
Pinch out new growth tips on
shrubs and perennials. This way,
they’ll produce multiple shoots
that will develop thicker growth
and a better-looking bush. Cut
back climbers - like clematis,
honeysuckle and jasmine - that
flowered earlier in spring.
November pest watch
Aphids are everywhere in
spring, treat with Yates Natures
Way Pyrethrum or long-lasting
Confidor. Use Success for controlling slimy pear and cherry
slug and leafroller caterpillars
on fruit trees.
