In a one room shop under the oak trees of East Texas, Marvin Priefert,
a former Nebraska wheat farmer and inventor, built a headgate for
his neighbor. Little did he know that first piece of ranch equipment
would later become the foundation of one of the largest and most
respected ranch equipment manufacturing companies in the
world. Always a man who looked for a simple solution to a complex
problem, Marvin Priefert’s innovativeness and his vision of a better way is still carried through the family as
it enters its third generation of ownership.
From the inventiveness of that Nebraska farmer’s creative thinking has grown a company that not only
leads the way in the livestock handling business today but has, in many ways, revolutionized the industry.
Son Bill, and now grandsons Eddie, Nate, and Travis carry on the tradition of finding a better way into the
everyday operations of Priefert Manufacturing. Motivated by the pride of ownership and the challenge of
“building a better mousetrap”, the Priefert Family has built a business and reputation based on the needs of
the American farmer and rancher. Building ranch equipment is not just our job; it’s our
lifestyle. It’s not what we do – it’s who we are. Hard work, good people,
a willingness to step “outside the box” and abundant blessings from
God have allowed our company to grow and prosper from its humble

No other product invented by the Priefert family has had more of an impact on
the cattle industry than our full front-opening headgate. In 1964 there were very
few headgates on the market, the most popular being the guillotine style. Our
founder, Marvin Priefert, had a neighbor buy one of these styles of headgates
and saw him struggle each time he used it. Marvin, a young inventor with

This rugged, completely reversible crowding
system can be used as a portable or
permanent working corral. Either way, it

Priefert’s Solid Sweep System has several
unique, practical features not found in most
other solid sweeps. Pivoting our sweeping
bow gate at the alley, we improved the flow
of cattle by eliminating the corner found with
the standard design of 180 degree sweeps.
By eliminating catwalks, we improved safety
and provided another cost saving benefit for
operators. An optional second bow gate offers
the opportunity for loading directly from the
sweep and eliminates the need for a separate
loading alley. All alley and sweep panels are
designed to provide easy access for “pouron” application of insecticides. More for your

For permanent operations and ultimate durability, this
135º Solid Sweep and 30’ of alley has loads of options
for helpful versatility. With an Alley-Stop and an
Adjustable Alley Gate, cattle flow is easily controlled.
Alley widths can be adjusted for calves (18”), yearlings
(21”), cows (25”), or bigger cows and bulls (28”). Two
Alley Panels (SPPSGGY) with lockable access doors
can offer entry to the rear of a squeeze chute from
either side. No catwalks are needed as alley and
sweep design allows for easy access to livestock.
The most basic of Solid Sweeps and Alleys we have to
offer. This system has the full 135º Solid Sweep and
20’of adjustable alley. The single adjustable Alley
Stop keeps cows from backing out of the alley.
A 45º turn can be added to any Priefert Solid Alley. For
this set-up, we took the SS-8 and added 3 components to
allow a turn for those who require or prefer something
other than a straight alley.
Simply the SS-10 with two 45’s to make a complete 90º
turn. Although the placement depicted is immediately
after the first straight 10’ alley section, any 45º or 90º can
be located between any section of alley panels.
Starting with the components of the
SS-8, we simply moved one of the two
alley panels with gate (SPPSGGY) from
directly behind the chute to trade places
with a standard alley panel (SAPGY)
from the middle section. We reversed
the SSPSGGY panel and put the gate
portion to the rear so when opened to
the inside, it becomes a sorting gate.

used for a lead-up to a Calf Table.

our sweeping bow gate at the alley we
improved the flow of cattle. Eliminating the

that provides benefits that reduce stress on
livestock and operators alike. The cost savings
and reduction of labor in assembly further
increases the attractiveness of this design. A

This Sweep and alley includes a 135º Rough Stock
Open Sweep and a 30’ alley. With the help of a single
Alley Gate and an Alley Stop (ASU), flow of cattle can
readily be controlled as they make their way down
the alley. Two 12’ Panels with gates (RSOPPSG) are
shown at end of alley. These gates allow access to
the alley and lock to block the next animal in line.
For additional versatility, one of these panels may be
reversed and exchanged with a middle alley panel to
serve as a sorting gate.
Add an 8’ section of alley and another Alley Gate to
the RSOS-8 and create a space for a single animal
Tru-Test scale right in the alley. With the extended
length of 38’, the alley of the RSOS-9 allows
operators room for an additional animal.
A 45º turn can be added to any Priefert Rough Stock Open
Alley. For this set-up, we took the RSOS-8 and added 3

The Bud Box Corral design from Bud Williams of Bowie, Texas is no accident. It is the result of many years of
experience and the acceptance of two basic instinctive cattle behaviors: (a) when blocked, cattle want to return to
where they came from and (b) animals prefer to go around something they feel pressure from. Mr. Williams’ accepted
methods for Effective Stockmanship in moving cattle have gained notable recognition and widespread acceptance
over the last several years. By learning these techniques and learning to read cattle to utilize their natural tendencies,
livestock producers can save time, labor, and money. Moving cattle through this type of simplistic, economical set of
pens can be accomplished with moderate experience and little practice. Measurable results have been realized by
stock owners who keep their animals’ temperature as close to normal as possible. Greater effectiveness of vaccines
and other pharmaceuticals used at the cattle pens can be realized using techniques producing less stress in the

“Bud box” model 1
Design for the Bud Box concept requires that the cattle enter
the small box and are moved past the opening to the single
file chute. When the cattle move to the dead end, they will
naturally want to return to their entry point. It is imperative that
the handler position themselves very near the chute entrance so
that when the cattle go around you they will find the single file
alley to the chute.
