Visitors are often surprised at
how clear the water is and how
wide open the spaces are.
FICTION: Alligators are
green.
FACT: Alligators are
frequently depicted as green
in color – but they’re actually
black. And although these
reptiles are often perceived as
violent and dangerous, they’re
actually passive creatures that
tend to keep to themselves
unless provoked.
FICTION: To see the
Everglades you must visit
Everglades National Park.
FACT: Everglades
National Park, at 1,508,538
acres, constitutes the southern
portion of the Everglades as a
whole and makes up just onefifth of its total area. You can
explore more of the Everglades
ecosystem through activities
offered in Big Cypress National
Preserve, Collier-Seminole
and Fakahatchee Strand State
Parks, the Florida Panther and
Ten Thousand Islands National
