Evolving Hope
For Families
New Program Provides Much-Needed Services
Dear Friend of ChildServe,
As a society, we like to hear about miracles in medicine. It gives us the feeling
of hope that anything is possible. At the same time, there are many things that
still need to be discovered.
For example, when people learn that one in 88 children is affected by autism,
they wonder why the incident rates are so high. They ask, “What causes
autism?” and “How can we treat or even prevent autism?”

It is because of the generous people in our community that we are able to
offer services such as the Autism Program. We see miracles happening inside
our doors every day as a result of new research, passionate philanthropists
and determined staff. Read more about autism, real children who are affected

To Help With Her Diagnoses
When she was 3, Ellie was diagnosed with
moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
(ADHD) and classical autism. Her emotional and
developmental age was about two-thirds of her
chronological age, making it difficult for her to
understand herself and her surroundings. With
constant sensory intrusions of smells, sounds,
movement, urges and sights, she didn’t know how
to respond.
that works based on consistency and routine provided by
teachers, aides, family and others who work with Ellie.
“It means the world to me to have so much outside
support and people who care about my daughter,” Jamie
says. “As a parent of a child with autism, one of the
hardest things to deal with is a lack of understanding and
acceptance from others. But it’s absolutely essential to
reach out and make these connections to allow your
child to have a life. And it’s OK to ask for help.”

because her behaviors were so severe, Ellie’s mom, Jamie,
eventually had to discontinue the therapies because they
turned into traumatic experiences for her daughter. Ellie
was able to continue receiving therapy through services
offered at her school.
Jamie was proactive in identifying a team of people to
aid in Ellie’s growth and care since she was in preschool.

Robbie Van Arkel, a skill
development specialist through
ChildServe’s supported community
living program, has worked with
Sophie, 11, since she was diagnosed
with autism at age 2½.
Barb says many families are willing to wait because
ChildServe specializes in children and offers other
therapies as well. Some children enroll earlier by
bringing a caregiver who can be trained by ChildServe,
or if they need daytime hours.
Robbie, one of the longer-serving employees, had
several years of experience in the field before coming
to ChildServe. The therapy she provides evolves as the
child matures. She worked with Sophie at a young age
to develop basic communication skills and now they
talk about feelings, discuss events from school and
develop problem-solving skills.
A large part of the job is breaking skills down,
repeating and building on each piece so children can
understand, remember and build independence from
them, Robbie says. Every step forward is applauded.
“Sometimes it can be very small. But it’s a great
achievement for that child and the family,” she says.
Staff members help children work on three to four
goals, each with different steps and input from the
family and supervisors. Typically, employees meet
with children two to three times a week for an average
of two hours.
“You have to be flexible and creative and
adapt to what that child needs for that moment,”
Elizabeth says.

Kyle began his work at the Science Center of Iowa
