AN UNBELIEVABLE VARIETY OF PROGRAMS
Boy, does our club have an interesting variety of programs. From WMD last week to the world of race
car drivers this week. Plus giant flexible erasers named Gumby to two Teutontic models whose faces
look familiar, the scope of subjects is mind-blowing. President Gary hurried in to the podium, after Joe
Cina had already begun the meeting, to report on the District Conference, at which they apparently
had plenty of entertainment. With Gordie Norman as Sergeant at Arms, appearing before the
audience more times than the district governor, Miles Petroff, our club was well represented. The club
also came away with a big bundle of awards, which Gary enumerated for the group, holding each one
up to be viewed by the audience. Your editor dearly wishes he could have been there to join in the fun.
The race car driver is a hometown lanky lad by the name of Kenton Koch, who began racing karts at
the tender age of 8, so now at 19 he is a practiced driver who is unbelievably fast, according to Dean
Case, the Manager of Mazda Motorsportes. Dean reported that 50% of all drivers on tracks today
came up through Mazda Motorsports, which makes the brand a name well recognized. And by joining
in the hometown cause of Gumby Fest, they put the event in front of tens of thousand’s of racing fans.
So, on June 14, if they aren’t in town for the festival, they at least know about us.

ROTARY IN ACTION
Pictured are Rotarians from District 6440, Illinois, USA,
busy traveling to remote river communities in and around
Tatin, Guatamala. Instead of digging water wells, which
takes time and maintenance, the Rotarians now bring
water filtering devices that allow the natives to purify the
water they are used to using.

EXPLANATIONS
Our youthful race car driver speaker explains the difficulty of
balancing study time with the racetrack schedule. New
member Jenette Lopez is our contact person for the Friends
of Rotary Group. She tells of all the event plans this energetic
group is now juggling.
When your editor first became a Rotarian
in 1960, all wives of members were
called Rotary Annes. They were
welcome at most every event and helped
plan the social events, When the club
sponsored the All Star Football Game of
S.G. Valley the Rotary Annes worked the
snack bar, adding considerably to the
earnings of the event. Throughout the
history of Rotary there have been groups
of women who organized an unofficial
“Rotary Club” of women, sometimes
based in the same city as Rotary Club #1,
but it was always without the permission
of RI, and it was not until the U. S.
Supreme Court ruled, in 1987, that
Rotary had to admit women members to
the Duarte club, right here in the S. G
Valley, that clubs were able to officially
admit women members.

CONFERENCE NOSTALGIA
In past years your editor would
have been at the District
Conference this weekend, but
alas, he had to conclude that it
was beyond him this year. My
favorite has to be the one in
1992, on board the Queen Mary
in Long Beach harbor with all
the international history that
the ship carries with it. Chris
Lyman, Glendora Rotarian was
District Governor that year, and
even before his year began he
asked me to be his conference
chairman, which required
looking at different potential
sites, etc. I believe we
considered beach cities all the
way from San Diego to Santa
Barbara. He finally settled on
the Queen Mary in Long Beach,
which then included the
Spruce Goose. The Citrus
Singers performed one
evening under the massive
wings of the craft. Rotarians
slept in the ship’s cabins.
With Gordie being the Sargeant at Arms for the
Conference, our members got pressed into service
which included wearing the (Hawaiian?) uniforms.

THE RELAY FOR LIFE CARNIVAL
With all the events occurring this weekend, President elect Joe Cina was hard pressed to do all that
needed doing for the Cancer Society Relay for Life Event. The grass was lush and green where the
booths ringed the track at Louis Pompey Park. Many organizations had erected a booth with ten foot
by twenty foot covering, including service clubs and various businesses. The one next to the Rotary
booth was the Curves business, a woman’s exercise outfit, with many of the curves uncovered due to
the heat. The walkers around the track were varied, some joggers, some women pushing twin
strollers, one portly gentleman in a blue tee shirt grimly plodding along lap after lap. Many families
had set up camp with children playing ball. It was a festive event for such a grim cause. Members
who participated were Pat Janes and Reverend Karen Davis, plus your editor. Others?
