Chairman’s report 1/10th IC Track 2007
The racing year 2006 is over. Time to look back, and nearly all we see is water, water and
more water. More about this later on.
First GP of the year took place in Tolmin, Slovania.
This club will be organising next years EC B 1/8.
18 drivers showed up in 1/10th 200mm class, from Austria, Slovenia, Rumania, Switzerland,
and even Denmark.
The race was well organised, but the weather gods released their demons on sunday, so
the finals had to be shortened.

Second GP on the calendar took place at Lostallo, Switzerland.
Only 8 drivers showed up for this event.
Fortunately this Gp and the Sovenia GP was combined with 1/8th class.
Otherwise the organisers would have had a very bad financial loss.

Third GP took place in Heemstede, Netherlands.
63 drivers where listed.
For the organising club, it was the final test before the EC in august.
Ideal circumstances for qualifications, sunny and warm.
It certainly showed Heemstede is the test track for a nearby modelcar manufacturer..
Finals started with Micheal Salven in the lead for the first 10 minutes, followed close by local
electro hero Jilles Grosskamp, who took that lead for the next 3 minutes, when he got
involved in a race accident, and had to leave the race.
Salven took the lead again, but suffered from glitches (broken cristal)
So it was Julius Kolff who lead the race. Julius made a few errors in the early stage of the
race, but from then on he took the lead till the finish line.
The Mach organisation was certainly ready for the EC.

We also had the 1/8 40+ EC combined with 235mm EC at Bourg en Bresse, France.
36 drivers for 1/8,
9 drivers with classic 2wd 1/8,
and 10 drivers 235mm.
This week also suffered heavy rainfall, but the finals we could run dry.
As usual this is a laid back event, well attended with different nationalities.
We could see the return of race legend Rody Roem, and some other well known drivers, like
Jacky Mouton, and Christophe Aygon.
An exciting race, with Roem who made a few mistakes in the beginning, finishing second,
only 3 seconds after Eric Nogier.

In 235mm there where very few competitors, mainly from UK and Belgium, where the class
still is run.
With some hot shots like Glynn Beal and Robin D'Hondt, the finals looked promising.
With favourite Alain Levy who lost a sidebelt, Glynn's servofailure, and Robin's lost
frontdrive at the start of the race, a lot of commotion in the pits.
Alain Levy claimed his fourth consecutive European title.
Although this class has it's die-hards, it could use some new injections

EC Heemstede Holland
Water was a point of discussion all week during Euro's 200mm, with 142 drivers from 16
countrys ready to race.
The opening day was a wash out, so the controlled practice started on Tuesday.
Friday/Saturday's qualifying was a bit messed up with track being wet then dryed out.
So grip was changing all the time, not an easy task for the drivers to keep up with these
conditions.
All of the sub-finals have been run in very difficult and rainy conditions.
More floods and thunderstorms almost stopped the race.
Race directors, officials and teammanagers agreed to race on, but the first lightning struck
nearby would end the race.
However just before the final the weather cleared up and we could have a dry final, with
some very tricky wet spots.
Also the final was shortened to 30 minutes, due to the still changing weather conditions.
The opening ten minutes of the final saw Salven lead from Green. A small mistake in the
tricky damp condition by Salven then gave Green the lead.
Who in turn made a small mistake. Salven fought back chasing down leader
Vrielinck, before 1st gear failure forced him into retirement.
Also making a mistake Vrielinck handed the lead to Balestri in the dying minutes of the race
with Green in close pursuit.
Closing in on the Italian, the reduced race lenght of 30 minutes, meant Green was unable to
catch the leader before the flag.

Thanks Mike Myers that I can use your article from the 200mm IFMAR world
championship, more reports and a lot of photo’s you find on www.sgrid.com and in RC Car

The 200mm IFMAR On-Road Fuel World Championships are being hosted by the
Queensland Radio Circuit Car Racing Association. The track is 285 meters on the racing
line, and 4 to 4.5 meters wide. The current track lap record is 17.2 seconds, set by Chris
Tosolini. There are 134 registered racers for this year's event, and 128 have showed up as
of today.
Sander DeGraaf from IFMAR is the race director. Alastair Walker is the Event Secretary.
Doug Barber is the Event Chairman, Trevor Kerr looks after the controlled fuel, and is in
charge of the upgrades and development. John Hamon is the Chief Technical Inspector.
Peter Cooper is the official timekeeper. Jeff Nnibb is the IT administrator. The race referees
are Franky Noens from Belgium, and Trevor Reid (President of FEMCA) and Peter Ellis,
(President of AARCMCC and also the AARCMCC Referee).
All racers run controlled fuel - it's proven to be very easy to look after, once you have the
procedures in place. Fuel storage is no issue here, and the drivers all seem to be very
happy with the Runner Time Fuel."
People can view the results on the track website: http://200mmifmarworlds.com - results are
currently being posted, but the rest of the website is recovering from a server crash, and will
be restored by tomorrow.
The weather in Brisbane has been very unusual - after a long drought, it suddenly turned
wet, with rain and hail, just in time for this event. The rain seems to have left us for now, and
www.efra.se
z Page 12
although it is much colder than normal for this time of the year, the weather is bright and
sunny, with a nice breeze.
The six rounds of qualifying ended Thursday. The top four racers who were placed directly
in the main Final were Chris Tosolini (Kyosho), Dario Balestri (Team Magic), Adrien Bertin
(Kyosho) and Takaaki Shimo (Kyosho). There was a lot of scrambling towards the end, and
while some racers were able to improve their positions, several others seemed to be stuck
in a run of bad luck, with problem after problem. The rest of the racers were each placed in a
lower final, and will need to advance up into the main Final. In all but the very lowest finals,
seven racers are placed in each Final, with three bump-ups completing the field of ten cars.
The top three finishers advance into the next higher Final. Qualifying ran smoothly all week,
other than for the rain interruptions, and finished up "under the lights" late Thursday
afternoon. Chris, Sirio, and the Kyosho team were ecstatic, having taken TQ and placed
three cars into the top ten. Team Magic was equally ecstatic, with Dario Balestri finishing
second!
The lower finals started off early in the day, under cloudy skies. As the races went on, the
skies darkened, and by mid-morning it was raining. The rain continued through the lunch
break. Once again, just as in Brazil, these high-powered cars were limited by traction and
driver ability, with no need for high speed performance. Those drivers who knew how to
prepare their cars for wet conditions, and who could drive the most smoothly, had a huge
advantage. The lower Finals will continue for the rest of the day; weather permitting, the
upper Finals will be run tomorrow (Saturday). Should that not be possible, we have a rain
date of Sunday "just in case".
Weather should not even be an issue at this race! This part of Australia is in the middle of a
drought, with water restrictions. One day of showers would have been highly unusual - but a
whole week with on/off rain, and even hail? It's just not logical. Logical or not though, the
racers just have to do their best. It's also supposed to be rather hot this time of the year, but
most of us think it's quite cold! Especially in the evenings, warm clothes are a necessity.
Josh Cyrul has switched from running Sirio engines to Orion. There was a protest made
early in the event about the liner in Josh's engines: "Protest received from Italian Team
Manager"... "The engines may have a maximum of four (4) ports, including the exhaust port.
No form of forced induction is allowed or any form of variable port timing. Only glowplug
ignition is allowed. No holes in the piston and no additional holes in the liner".
After the IFMAR Jury reviewed the Orion engine, the following statement was issued: "The
Jury does not consider the manufacturing apertures existing at the bottom part of the liner of
this motor to be "holes" in the sense of "ports" as they do not create a communication
between the combustion chamber and the crank shaft housing at any time of the motor
cycle. Therefore the original spirit of the rule is respected and the protest defeated."
Reade, Scotty Gray, Jiles Groskamp, Peter Jovanovic, Ken Furukawa, Jessie Davis, Davide
Gallesi, and Simon Camilleri.
The cars took off, and Scotty quickly pulled out in front. While the cars behind him were
fighting it out, Scotty continued to increase his lead. The order a few minutes in was Scotty,
Masao, Chris, and Ken. Chris passed Masao two minutes in. Then Ken flipped, dropping
way back in the pack by the time the marshal got to him. Shortly after, Chris and Jiles
tangled, dropping both of them way back. Jessie then hit the berm at the right side of the
track – you could hear it from the opposite end of the track. He was able to continue though.
www.efra.se
z Page 13
About then Ken started having troubles. The order was now Scotty, Masao, Peter, Davide,
Simon, with the race approaching the 15 minute mark. The pit crew kept Scotty out a bit
longer than usual, and Scotty ran out of fuel coming into the pits. The rest of the field went
by, and gained a lot of ground by the time Scotty was running again. The order was now
Peter, Masao, Davide, Simon, and Jiles. Right after, the clouds that had set in started
dropping some precipitation on us, which led to all the cars being called in. It was rather
confusing – some mechanics started changing tires, while others wanted to change plugs.
IFMAR stepped in, and said basically that nobody could do any work on the cars, but since
one team had already changed tires, the others could as well – but no other work. IFMAR
announced that since the race had completed 14.5 minutes, we’d run a second 15.5 minute
round, and add the two together. If the second segment got to run eight minutes or more
(completing 22.5 minutes) the results would be official.
The starting order for the second segment was Peter, Masao, Simon, Davide, Jiles, Ken,
Simon, Chris, Scotty, and Jessie. There was a pretty clean start for the second segment.
Scotty had a LOT of ground to make up if he was to get into the top three, and he drove
accordingly. Unfortunately, he drove too hard at the sweeper all the way at the front right
corner of the track, and flipped the car into the grass. By the time he was marshaled, he was
way, way back. The order now was Peter, Ken, Jiles, Simon, Masao. Simon then passed
Jiles, and soon Simon and Masao were running neck and neck. 0 died and was brought
back into the pits. Simon was having lots of problems. The order now was Peter, Ken,
Masao, Jessie, Jiles. Whatever went wrong in Simon’s car resulted in him dropping back in
the pack. Ken took over the lead, with the running order Ken Peter, Masao, Jiles, Davide.
This brought up the first pit stop. Jiles went off the track at the right end. He kept going, but
something had changed either in a one-way or the clutch, as the engine went by me
screaming higher than any engine I can remember. Somehow he lasted the whole race that
way, but whatever was slipping caused him to lose ground. The order before the next pit
stop remained the same. Scotty slammed the boards as he came out of the pits, but the car
was OK. There weren’t many changes in position as the race continued – the final order
was Ken, Peter, Masao, Scotty, Davide. As a side-note, when the A-Semi was about to
start, the rain returned, wetting the track and putting an end to today’s activities. There’s a
chance we’ll get to continue as this is being written, but with the time being 4:45, and the
track still quite wet, that’s rather doubtful.
The A-Semi-Final had been delayed from Saturday because of the weather. It was
scheduled to start at 9:30am on Sunday. The starting order was Hideo Kitazawa, Francesco
Tironi, Keisuke Fukuda, Toshiyuki Iwamoto, Michael Salven, Ric Bartolozzi, Mike Swauger,
Josh Cyrul, Rick Vrielijnck, and Ron Atomic.
Warm-up got underway smoothly, under gray skies with occasional spots of sunlight.
Francesco Tironi called for a ten-minute delay, which meant he would need to start from the
pits.
The race started out just fine, with Hideo pulling ahead steadily. Some other cars started
having problems, which got worse as the race went on – it was soon apparent that it was
drizzling, and the track changed back from a race track to a skating rink! So, everyone was
called in, to try again.
The second attempt went much better. The cars got away cleanly, but for Toshiyuki who
had problems. The initial running order was Kitazawa, Salven, Swauger, Vrielijnck, Fukuda.
The track looked good, the sun was out, and the cars were getting around just fine. Iwamoto
was having problems though, constantly going back to the pits. Swauger passed Salven to
www.efra.se
z Page 14
take over the second spot. The cars behind were fighting side by side. Kitazawa built up
over a straightaway lead by the time the cars needed to come to the pits for refueling.
The order after the first set of pit stops was Kitazawa, Swauger, Cyrul, Fukuda, and Salven.
Josh Cyrul was on a roll, working his way up from the back of the pack. He had the fastest
car on the track, and closed in on, and passed, Mike Swauger to take over second.
Kitazawa’s lead was down to six seconds, which Josh was working at cutting down.
Josh caught and passed Kitazawa, as did Swauger soon after. Salven died on the track,
and was brought back to the pits. Kitazawa then flamed out on a fuel stop. The running
order was Cyrul, Swauger, Fukuda, Tironi, and Kitazawa. Atomic was constantly in and out
of the pits with problems.
As the race neared the end, Cyrul was on a roll, and Fukuda got by Swauger. Kitazawa’s
car flamed out coming out of the pits, dropping him out of fifth place. With 23 minutes into
the race, everything was running smoothly, the order being Cyrul Fukuda, Swauger, Tironi,
and Bartolozzi. Bartolozzi flamed out, allowing Salven to go by. The last few minutes were
rather uneventful, and the race finished up with Josh Cyrul, Keisuke Fukuda, and Mike
Swauger finishing on top, and advancing into the Final. They were followed by Tironi,
Kitazawa, Salven, Bartolozzi, Iwamoto, Atomic, and Vrielijnck.
The Final
The drivers were announced, photographs were taken, and all the cars went out for their
warm-up laps. The starting order was Chris Tosolini, Dario Balestri, Adrien Bertin, Takaaki
Shimo, Josh Cyrul, Ken Furukawa, Keisuke Fukuda, Peter Jovanovic, Mike Swauger, and
Masao Tanaka
Within a few minutes, Mike Swauger called for a ten minute delay. Apparently he was
having radio problems. Everyone else used this time to do some last minute adjustments to
their cars, as Mikey worked furiously to try to fix whatever was causing his problems. As
time ran out, Mikey was still not ready - but in IFMAR you only get the single ten minute
delay. Mikey would have to start from the pits, if he got his car ready in time.
The race started, but Mikey still had work to do. Fukuda had problems when Peter bumped
the back of Josh's car, causing Josh spun out, along with Peter, and the two of them went
sliding across the track directly in front of him. Fukuda had no place to go, hit the cars, and
got flipped on his lid as all three cars went rolling down the track, taking Keisuke back to last
place by the time he was marshaled.
The early running order was Tosolini, Shimo, Balestri, Tanaka, and Jovanovic. Chris started
pulling away from the pack as the race went on. Josh Cyrul was having problems with
flame-outs. Mike Swauger finally did get going briefly, but never solved his radio problems.
The running order was soon Tosolini, Shimo, Balestri, Tanaka, and Fukuda, but Balestri
soon had problems. Josh flamed out again, and then everyone came in for their first pit stop.
Fukuda had been moving up, but in an incident on the track his body got pushed out of
shape, requiring a trip to the pits to get it fixed. He was refueled, changing his refueling
timing, and costing him a few seconds. Eight minutes into the race the running order was
Tosolini (pulling away), Shimo Jovanovic, Balestri, and Tanaka. With many of the wellknown fast guys having trouble, sixteen year old local Australian racer Jovanovic was doing
exceptionally well! Swauger and Cyrul meanwhile were struggling with problems. Balestri
flamed out in the pits, costing him still more time. Shimo flamed out on lap #99, and the 50second lap time was to hurt him later on as the race neared the end. Jovanovic got by
Shimo to take over second place briefly.
www.efra.se
z Page 15
As the race continued, Tosolini was still pulling away, Shimo was back ahead of Jovanovic.
Bertin, who had been struggling, flamed out, and it was another trip back to the pits. With 43
minutes still to go, Fukuda had worked his way all the way up to second place, behind
Tosolini. Jovanovic held onto third, followed by Shimo and Furukawa. Bertin flamed out yet
again, and right after so did Cyrul. Josh got going, only to flame out immediately after he got
back out on the track. Chris had a huge lead, and seemed to be dominating the race. He
was running what the announcer called "a very controlled race".
Half way into the race Chris was coming up on Fukuda to lap him. The running order was
Tosolini, Fukuda, Shimo, Jovanovic, Tanaka. Josh dropped out for good, as had Swauger.
There were now only six of the original ten cars still running, with only two cars, Tosolini and
Fukuda on the lead lap.
The cars continued like this for quite a while, with few changes in position. During a pit stop
Chris' mechanic dropped his car in the pits, which damaged the antenna tube. Chris
seemed to slow down a bit, allowing Fukuda to close in. Fukuda cut Chris' lead little by little.
Chris seemed to be having problems at the end of the straight, with his car trying to spin out
on him. Chris later on said that his radio antenna tube had been pulled out of place, and his
car was glitching at this, the furthest point on the track from the driver's stand. Fukuda was
slowly but surely gaining on Tosolini. Then, on one of his pit stops, Fukuda flamed out and
had to be re-started. Chris had problems too - Chris' mechanic tried to fix the antenna
problem while the car was still in pit lane during a fuel stop. Chris was given a stop-and-go
penalty, allowing Fukuda to make up the lost ground, and the cars were once again
separated by only a few feet, less than a second apart. With everyone else struggling,
Jovanovic was now in third place, looking like a pro. Chris pulled a little away from Fukuda,
then they both pitted, and came out of the pits neck-and-neck again. Chris had problems
once again at the end of the straight, and Fukuda closed in even closer.
Jovanovic flamed out on the back straight, costing him time, but he held onto his position.
Chris' car looked very loose on the track. Another round of pit stops came up, and when the
cars finished with the pitting, Fukuda was right on Chris' bumper. It was now 46 minutes into
the hour-long race. Shimo got by Jovanovic, dropping Jovanovic to fourth.
For reasons I didn't understand, Fukuda seemed to back off a bit. First he let Jovanovic go
by, and then Shimo. In terms of laps, Fukuda was way ahead of both of them, but didn't
seem to want to push his car as hard as he had been. Chris pitted, and a few laps later so
did Fukuda. Fukuda's car flamed out, and had to be restarted. The marshal next to me said
"it's all over now". However, Chris' car was really, really loose at the end of the straight, and
hit a board, but was still running. Fukuda meanwhile seemed to turn on the afterburners,
and go after Chris.
With six minutes left, Chris spun out and Fukuda went by to take the lead. Chris re-took the
lead. Then Chris came in for refueling. Fukuda did the same a few laps later. Fukuda took
over the lead on lap 179. Chris had refueled, Fukuda had refueled, and Fukuda was in the
lead with Chris playing catch up. Then, Chris hit the barrier separating the back straight from
the path returning after the turn at the end of the straight, breaking his right front wheel. That
was it - Chris had to retire with a broken car, and watch the remaining cars eat into his oncecommanding lead. First Shimo took over second place, and then Jovanovic took over third.
The race came to a finish with Chris bumped back to fourth place, and Keisuke Fukuda
earning the title of Champion of the World!
What a race! What a show! Chris dominated, but Fukuda played it smart, not really pushing
it until he had to. Chris had radio problems, but he was able to deal with them until Fukuda
www.efra.se
z Page 16
put on the pressure as the race neared the end. It was a great race to watch - I feel really
happy for Fukuda, sorry for Chris, and also sorry for all the experts who had so many
problems. However, their problems led to a wonderful finish for Peter Jovanovic - it was a
great race for the sixteen year old. He later told me that he was wondering "is all this for
real?" His strategy: "Be careful and consistent - being very proud to be in such a race with
such great drivers." He added "it was amazing to be up there - I am not well known, but felt I
had the talent to be there. I was nervous in the semi-final. I'll try to make it to some future
major races, with help from my sponsors". (He's now sponsored only by his dad's pocket!).
Everything was done and over with. The cars were teched, a photo session was held in front
of the pits, the Champaign bottles were handed out, and a few minutes later all three top
finishers were soaked! What a day!!!
As a side note, now that the race was over, the sun was shining, the clouds were gone, and
Brisbane returned to the perfect weather the race promoters had expected for the entire
event! What can you say…

Everyone who has organised an EC 1/10th, knows I put a lot of pressure on the
organisation to get everything prepared to perfection.
It is only normal: an EC is the top event of the year, and manufacturers and participants
expect nothing less than a flawless event.
If a drivers car is not conform regulations, he will be disqualified.
But in the past, when the organisation did not meet certain standards, it got covered under
the wings of love.
There will be no more tolerance for bending the rules, it will hurt financially!
For example, this year I was at an EC, with only one detection loop...
At an other race it apparently was to much to get two microphones for the referees...
We only think EFRA is the best organiser for races, nobody in the world is better than us.
Australia was just perfect, from infrastructure to punctual teamwork.
I saw a lot of badly organised races in Europe, compared to Australia.
In 2007, there will be an WC 1/10th in Europe, and this MUST take place on the best
possible accommodation, and with the best team.
Let's not walk the same path as the European songfestival where everyone votes on it's
neighbouring country, but choose for the best location in all honesty.
I have asked all EFRA participants during the last WC, where they found that this race
should be run in Europe. 90% of the persons questioned, voted on the same country.
1/10th and GP's apparently do not match, only the tracks with a EC after the GP are well
attended.
Dear drivers, sorry for all the rain this season, but that is certainly one thing I can not
controle...
The weather can only get better next year.
Dear friends, thanks for all the good times I had amongst you this year, and I will stop typing
for now.
See you next year,
Franky Noens
